93696 not only stands as one of the best avant-garde metal albums you’ll hear this year, but also serves as a conceptual retrospective celebrating 10+ years of music from Haela Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix’s Liturgy.

Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
I like the image of Anthony neatly folding his yellow flannel in his baggage as he goes on vacation
I put my hamster in a sock and slammed it against the furniture
He scrunkles the red one in his pocket
@@TippyHippy What a beautiful statement

Love how all these 9/10 records like this album, Scaring The Hoes and Lana's Ocean Blvd all dropped on the same day
I don’t think I’ve ever seen him hand out this many 9s in such little time. It’s still only the first half of the year too… pretty exciting!
Honestly same. I thought giving STH and Ocean Blvd a 9/10 back to back was insane, but here we are with a third one
The holy day.
That was a crazy day. The Swans single dropped that day too
@@jerrys1 Everyone wanted to realise good stuff that day.
40 years later still phenomenal lp and review, rest in peace Anthony
Yeah but haven’t you heard about that tell all with all the accusations???
It's a shame he had to go that way... who knew a potted plant could be so dangerous.

Brilliant.
Can't believe I audibly laughed at this bruh I gotta stop abusing drugs fr
It's a reference to bits/kHz. 96 leave you at some -75 dB while bitness doesn't matter nearly as much with some -96 dB maybe. 96 kHz is enough to enjoy the music. The rest doesn't matter, but DSD of 128 and above really delivers. Edit analogally.
One of the best album of the year, I still prefer 90210 but Travis truly killed it with this one.
Lol facts
👏👏🗣🗣WE FORGIVE U TRAVIS!!!
So true
"IT'S LIT(URGY)!" -Travis on this album probably
W 😂
SCARING THE BROS
t's a raging strong 9 to a lit 10 for me. I love the orchestrals this time and think they're integrated better than on HAQQ or origin of the alimonies. As are the wild experimentations and electronic elements. The production reeeally elevates it too. Album absolutely fucks.

I'll assume that one black metal YT channel is now gonna have field day with a new grift material🤭
It's cause people get mad when you call them black metal, even tho other projects just a weird are still considered black metal
@@GuyWhoLikesTheSnarkies1435 You mean Hipster Black Metal? that guy is absolutely awful, basically a far-right asshole that hates on any music that wasn't recorded in a shed in a forest and isn't TRVE KVLT
@@andrei11dr Thats because to many black metal is an ideology/bubble that doesnt accept outsiders. Deafheaven 10 years ago got insane amounts of hate just for trying something new.
@Devilbhro the Savage Deafheaven's sound wasn't even that new or weird, groups like Agalloch, Alcest, Borknagar, Altar of Plagues and Blut Aus Nord where doing similar experiments way before Deafheaven came out. The only reason Deafheaven got shit was because they were somewhat popular, which is pretty ridiculous considering that even people who don't listen to metal know the cover of Transylvanian Hunger
THIS IS ALL I WANTED! THANK YOU
Mid taste in music HAHAHA just kidding love you BRAD.
Haven't listened to the album but yes I agree it is a 9/10.
7/10 for me, it was a bit longer than it needed to be and the pacing was a bit rough but some parts of it were really great. If it was around 40 minutes of the better parts then it would be AOTY contender for me.
Really? Can you please explain how the song “daily bread” is anything but annoying, out of key, and absolutely unbearable to listen to? Sounds like a meth head trying to sing. Not to mention the vocals are clipping hard as hell.
Found Lil B’s account
Three albums released on the same day all getting 9s is wild
This greenscreen setup reminds me of the old reviews with a tighter angle where the album cover would bleed behind his glasses lmao
So glad that the band have been steadily getting more recognition over the last few albums. Been a massive fan since Aesthetica but felt like everyone just wrote them off after the infamous manifesto
That yellow flannel gonna need a wash soon with the amount of 9's dropping this month
@7:50 regarding infinity, EXACTLY my thoughts. can't stop listening to the album and going "how much intense can this song get???" it just keeps building!
In terms of musical composition, Haela has to be approaching creative genius. Absolutely brilliant.
Approaching??????
my guy it's literally just kinda shitty melodic black metal with glitch elements, of which are SUPER easy to do (you literally just adjust the speed of a sample in Ableton without changing the pitch, anyone can do it). if this sounds good to you you REALLY gotta listen to some stuff with better, "composition."

Hahah w comment underrated comment and pretty unique and probably the only comment that made me giggle in this comment’s section video. Even do I would prefer a comment that has few emojis to the mood but this is was good as well. I would give this comment 8/10.
God damn, this album is incredible. Easily a contender for album of the year, for sure.
This was such a freaking fun listen.
Fantano got inspired by 93696 so much that he transcended his room
I preordered this and listened to it on the first day. Haven't gone back to it because, while I really liked it the first time around it takes SO FUCKING MUCH mental energy and attention to truly digest, but you also kinda have to listen to it front to back for the full effect. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who felt this way.
The fact that he can carry 2 different flannel shirts in his luggage is insane. No one has ever done that before. Can't believe I'm witnessing history unfold before my very eyes. What's next? 3??
It's true. I tried to do that one time and the TSA confiscated my luggage and violated me behind close doors as punishment.
Hope you have her on to discuss the new project! Your last interview was great!
instantly as i was listening to Djennaration i was absolutely hooked. this album, and band as a whole are outstanding.
One of your best reviews imo, loved it thank you!
Liturgy being their own genre speaks volumes…
Sometimes you know you'll like an album based on the art alone.
the cover is pretty ugly ngl lol
@@now-semen-up thank you
Love how he listed the genre in the description as "Liturgy"
OMG HE REVIEWED IT WTF !!! THANK YOU FANTANO!
No way bro just greenscreened his usual setup 💀
is this the 9/10 year
but honestly a lot of very solid yet varied music this yeae, cant wait to see the first 10's of this year (if we get any)
This year has been so great for music already
I'm soooo excited to see them live in Chicago this summer. Been a fan since HAQQ came out in 2019.
Haven't listened to it but the cover looks cool so I agree with your score
i find it fascinating how similar this feels to alice coltrane. maybe branca even. beautiful transcendent striving overtones.
you only gave this album a 9 because if you reviewed it four more times you’d have to give it a 3, 6, 9, and 6 respectively
This album sounds like a demon being tortured, but the demon kinda likes it.
Let me guess... Yellow Flannel he likes it.
Let me guess... It's one of those glitchy noise albums.
Too late I already gave it a 9. This time you're the one copying me Anthony.
Fantano greenscreening himself into his own room is a pretty funny touch
This album is a 10 and possibly the best album of all time
60 years later and the only thing of him o remember is his deleted hospice review
8:18 When you have your phone on silent but it starts ringing on the desk
I can definitely appreciate 93696 as a work of art. It's definitely that. There's definitely intention and meaning and poetry to be found here. But I guess for me, it feels deliberately unapproachable. The lyrics are literally incomprehensible without looking them up, songs sometimes go on for ages without any clear sense of direction or progression, and the quality musicianship is just drowning in an avant-garde ocean of glitches, weird mixing choices, and deliberately blunt and grating musical passages. And it just keeps GOING. Maybe if you've watched Hunt-Hendrix's online lectures you'll have an easier time understanding what she's going for, but for me, this was the first time I actually listened to a full Liturgy album all the way through, and I just felt like I was tied to the back of a truck and dragged along a ride to a destination I couldn't recognize. In contrast, Ashenspire's "Hostile Architecture" from last year (which you gave the same score) managed to be experimental and dark while still actually being an engaging listening experience for me, and not just because I could actually comprehend the lyrics and themes, but also because it had the good sense to not overstay its welcome. THAT album deserved its 9/10. As depressing as it often gets, I still sometimes just put it on to listen to when I'm in a particular mood.
But I can't imagine I'll ever give 93696 another listen. I didn't HATE it, or even really DISLIKE it, but it was very alienating and it didn't really seem to have a point to the alienation. After five songs, I just had Genius open the entire time so I could actually understand what Hunt-Hendrix was screaming, because otherwise it all sounded basically the same, and in my opinion, if I need secondary resources in order to even have a tentative grasp on what an artist is trying to communicate, the art isn't really doing a good job of communicating itself. I kept wanting the album to draw me in, but it just wasn't happening. Every interesting point on the album is sandwiched between monotonous guitar riffs and a painfully overused skipping glitch effect. And that's to say nothing of the whole Ark Work tie-in, which honestly just feels like homework. If Hunt-Hendrix wants to artistically explore the nature of divinity and other metaphysical concepts, more power to her, but it feels like it ought to come from a place that's trying to help other people understand and feel these largely intangible concepts through the power of music. Instead, it just kind of comes off as massively self-indulgent philosophical wankery buried under 90 minutes of well-composed and expertly-performed (but mostly indistinguishable) metal interspersed with occasional flares of classical instrumentation.
And I mean, sometimes there's a place for self-indulgence in art, but 93696 seems to exist in this space where it presents itself like it has something really important to communicate, but it also paradoxically doesn't want to communicate it IN THE MUSIC without several layers of seemingly unnecessary obfuscation. Almost as though Hunt-Hendrix expects the listener to already know what they're getting into. And at that point, who is the music actually reaching and affecting? A bunch of metalhead philosophy majors and fans of Hunt-Hendrix who already read through the Ark Works and watched all the RUclips videos and read all the lyrics?
The album is impressive and clearly full of passion and deep thought, but I can't imagine a situation where I'd recommend it to someone who hasn't already listened to it. The only people I can imagine enjoying this album have probably already listened to it five times.
6/10. Above average and ambitious, and if you're one of the thousand or so people who've actually done all the homework leading into it, I imagine it can be transcendent at times, but it's unnecessarily long and too thematically vague to actually stand on its own as an album in my opinion.
Yeah, this should not have been your first Liturgy album. Totally get that it’s a very challenging album and it’s definitely not for everyone. But maybe you could try some of their earlier, more digestible works and come back to this one.
@@c4gam1ng12 What would you recommend starting with?
@@c4gam1ng12Follow-up a week later: I ended up just listening to the entire discography back to front. I'd say my favorite is "Origin of the Alimonies", and it also happens to be the shortest, so that probably would have been the ideal jumping-on point. I'd say that if a person listens to "Alimonies" and is curious to listen to more, "H.A.Q.Q." and "The Ark Work" are probably tied for second-best in my mind. "H.A.Q.Q." if they liked "Alimonies", "Ark Work" if they say they don't like the screaming vocals.
I'll also say that after marinating in Liturgy's acquired taste for a week or so, most of my original criticism of "93696" still holds true, but I've learned to respect and even appreciate that Hunt-Hendrix actively wants Liturgy to be at least a little bit inscrutable. I still just think "93696" is far too long and lacks the strong thematic resonance I felt with "Alimonies", which I consider to be a genuine 9/10. That said, I could maybe be talked into a light 7 if this truly ends up being the final Liturgy project, which would lend it a lot more meaning as a sort of book end to all the projects that came before, which is definitely a dimension I could not grok before on my first listen.
Thanks for encouraging me to keep with it.
my thoughts exactly. though, I've never been into Liturgy even in my peak black metal phase. I respect the artistry, but it's not for me.
@@GordonSlamsay Over the last couple months, I've found it makes for surprisingly good background music while working (if you have decent headphones), so I actually find myself coming back to Liturgy more often than I initially expected.
