    Personally, I wouldn't leave the old (used) needle on after administration. Bacteria could get in the line. After use, I always attach a new needle, ready for the next fluid dose.

      Same here - if I have one at home. If not, a good swipe with an alcohol pad is better than nothing. Also the needle cap needs some alcohol drops down inside it.

    • @beingblack
      @beingblack Год назад +1

      Another thing, I swipe the injection site with alcohol prior to inserting the needle. You can't be too careful!

    I have a cairn in renal failure and we have to begin subcutaneous fluids. Thanks for posting this. I never did this before but did administer insulin for another dog. This video makes it a little easier and less frightening.

    I suppose this can be done with an ampule of normal saline and a syringe.
    I have the Bat Lady in mind.
    Bat 🦇 Lady usually gives glucose and normal saline though.
    The Bats are usually dehydrated and in shock. Sugar apparently helps calm a shocked brain.

    Can you suggest a way to more rapidly introduce the fluid. I am doing home I.V. treatment to my dog. Currently, I do this by pinching the bag as tightly as possible and then squeezing but, my hand cramps rather quickly and I am not always able to administer the complete 200 mls. required.

    Last time we gave fluids, my dog bled quite a bit at injection site after we gave her fluid. Why would this happen?

  • @vear6
    @vear6 5 лет назад +5

    I feel like i'm hurting my dog when I put the needle in, is there some method to inserting the needle so it doesn't hurt him?? I thought the needle would go in easier than it does. I'm having to give him fluids every night (he's in kidney failure) and it's breaking my heart every time I do it.

    • @UnionLakeVeterinary
      @UnionLakeVeterinary  5 лет назад +3

      vear6 you can scratch the area before inserting the needle. You can also offer his favorite treat before and during giving the fluids. We would also be happy to review it with you in person if you need assistance!

      Me too. The 1st time wasn't bad at all. The 2nd time she flinched and screamed. This 3rd time, I had to end up sticking her like 3 times. It was just so painful for her. Which hurt me soo much. I hate seeing her in pain. Especially when I'm the one causing it😭💔 I have 2 more days of this. I can only hope and pray it doesn't hurt her like the past 2 times.

      Out dog HATES this (8 pounds PomChi). Is there any way do draw the fluid into an insulin type needle so it will go much faster? I can't seem to find any needle/syringes that would hold even 50ml, let alone 100. I know this would make it a lot easier on our dog since the 100ml drip seems to take forever.

    How often do I give fluids? My dog just got d/c from an ER and they didn’t tell me how often. He was under IV for 24 hours.

    • @valentinahernandez7291

      Wow, seriously? I know this was 2 years ago, but one would think that you would have enough sense to CALL THE ER AND ASK ASAP instead of coming on RUclips and asking random strangers. Unbelievable! Your poor dog. I hope he survives your stupidity.

    Hi! I give one of my dogs subcutaneous injections every few days and I've noticed the skin around her scruff get thick. Sometimes, she gets a little lump that lasts over a week (they eventually go away). Is there a way to soften up the tough skin and get rid of or prevent lumps? Would massaging her scruff help?

    after a sub cut injection in a dog....it develops a lump in some dogs.....wut can be the cause and is heparin gel.works on it topically..??

    • @cynthiadianecarey9902
      @cynthiadianecarey9902 3 года назад

      Sub q fluids usually leaves a bump after administration, which is where the special fluid your vet gave you, stays just beneath the skin, while it is being absorbed by your pet's body. The bump will be there, until the fluid is absorbed, which often takes hours. That is normal. Don' t rub it or put anything on it.
      If there is a small bump there, a few days later, call your vet because the injection site may be infected.
      Don't use heparin on any animal, unless carefully instructed by your pet's veterinarian.

    How much does that cost

    • @chrisb7013
      @chrisb7013 4 года назад

      If anyone is still curious - I am getting IV bags for $20 each from the vet, or a 14 pack bulk option for roughly $10 each, so bulk is the most cost effective.

    • @davidwall8145
      @davidwall8145 4 года назад

      Chris B where do you get the bulk at?

    • @sherrynickels5560
      @sherrynickels5560 4 года назад

      I've seen the IV bags online at places like Petco and Chewy for about $11 ea. You give your dog and Vet info and they call them to get the prescription.

      What do you feed your poodle? Because my dog was eating fine yesterday with the homemade dog food i made with lower phosphorus. But then today again, he doesn’t want to eat :-( also, do you give supplements as well? I would want to be with dog longer so I’m trying my best so he will live comfortably
