What a perfect video! I'm an armchair falconer out in California, and am studying to take my leap into working with a real bird. I'm stunned at the breadth of terminology and I'm stoked that you address it. In aviation we have poster size photos of the instrument panel of whatever airplane we're flying. From that, I took the idea to find a really good pic of a Red Tail, my intended first bird, and just start labeling it and memorizing. For all the terms for the gear I just started acquiring. I've cut jesssed made a perch, drawn plans for a little mews and even tried my hand at making a hood. My next game is going to be to get a vest and start loading it up with all the things those old English gents load 'em with when they're out in the hedge rows with the dogs! Just FYI, my major influences as I embark on this are you, Shawn, Hayes and Ben Woodruff. I could not pick a favorite. I appreciate greatly you sharing your art and sport.

Great to hear you are doing many preparations before diving in, too many people here in the uk just rush out and buy a bird without any idea. Buckle up because Falconry is a crazy ride to be on!

Love your videos! Your channel has definitely helped me learn about falconry. There seems to be a lot of birds of prey used in falconry. I’m curious, are kites included?

I really like to learn new words in English, especially falconry terms. It's very different from what I know already. Sending love and support from the Czech Republic. By the way I've thought about which kinds of birds of prey have 14 tail feathers and I'd really love to know it because this is one of the things that I don't know.

From my understanding the list is:
      Egyptian vulture
      Bearded vulture
      Wedge tailed sea eagle
      Steller sea eagle.
But I have since learnt from the comments that all gyps vultures have 14!
      We never stop learning!!!

This is very helpful. I'm from the US but learned falconry in Germany and am more familiar with the terms in German! 😅 The terms are so specialized and it's difficult to find the English terms since regular dictionaries don't recognize them. Looking forward to part 2 and beyond!

An example: I learned the term "furniture" from you, for the equipment the bird wears. If I look that up, I won't find the falconry definition. In German that word is "Geschirr," which normally means "crockery"! 😂

Google for glossaries from old books on falconry. Or if you want to go the route I did, start buying all the old books! It's addictive. All the master falconers have different 'must have' editions and swear by them, and it's a clue to each's personality and philosophy on falconry. Plus, with each one you get a new and improved pattern for cutting jesses!

Apparenlty all gyps vultures besides the white-rumped vulture have 14 tail feathers, don't know if there are any others
