As someone who used to go on there from like 2003-2012 when I was a kid the nostalgia is insane. I really like that New Grounds is getting some attention not 4chan level but at least some. For a website that goes back to 1996 Who would have thought it could survive after flash died?
I remember looking at the site's history a few years back and saw that they were closely associated with adobe. I expected the Newgrounds Player, but didn't expect Windows to fuck it over.
This is why you always take threats to school seriously, especially online, you never know if they're actually gonna do it and don't feel scared contacting somebody, because the faster we contact authorities the less likely anyone will get hurt.
Reminds me of a time where there was a bomb threat at my school and the principal called all our parents telling us to still go to school because they are prepared to take action. All they did was hire ONE security guard

I recently tried to explain to my 13 yo nephew newgrounds being a young kid before RUclips and before easily playable games on online devices. I still look for flash games sometimes. So fun story, before he did this, my friend and I chatted with him quite a bit. We were also meant to have a meetup with a bunch of other local Newgrounds users, but for whatever reason it never materialised. We never actually ended up meeting him in person, but we did chat on MSN a fair bit, and I remember he had NOTHING but negative things to say about his high school. This was around 2008 I think. Also, quite by happenstance, I'm wearing my old Newgrounds t-shirt right now!
What were some of the negative things he mentioned about his school? Was it teachers, bullying, pressure? What was he like aside from hating school? Did he seem pretty cool or did he weird you out?
Cool recap! Glad we were able to stop him in time. Who knows if he actually would have done anything, but he did have all that stuff on him. I wish I kept logs of all my convos with everyone who helped. Deckheadtottie was instrumental in stopping this potential attack. He woke me up that morning so we could figure out his location. I believe I traced his IP and was able to see the general area where he lived. From there I found the closest school and relayed that info to Deckheadtottie who was in contact with the local authorities. I believe he called the school directly as well. Then someone messages me with Sirtom93’s real name so I relayed that to Deckheadtottie and he passed that along to the authorizes as well. It was a relief to learn they intercepted him in time.
I still have my Newgrounds account from October 2000. I remember when that site was brand new because the neighbor kids discovered it and we all got the internet around the same time in 1995-96. Back before the Portal was a thing. That truly was the Wild West days of the Internet. Club A Seal, Teletubbies, eventually Pico. That shit was wild.
I remember a certain memory of when my mother was upstairs sleeping and my father was at work. I remember playing newgrounds games like geometry dash and riddle school. I also remember watching a madness combat animation. Later, my mother told me to get off because she needed to do some business stuff. Even though the fun ended, I had the time of my life. I still rewatch madness combat animations to this day.

It's good this guy got the help he needed. Usually I am a firm believer of the fact that mental instability does not justify criminal acts, but no one really got hurt here, and now he seems to be doing all right so, I wish him the best.
There used to be this tragic incident evolving around this NG user back in the day. His name was Livecorpse, and he sadly killed himself to stay away from police in summer 2004. Man rest in peace
For those who suffered from depression and bullying caused by their teacher and classmates, you know how easy it is to develop an unconditional hatred agaisnt society, humanity and espacially your school. Fortunately most ppl in that condition have a mental health good enough to stop them to do that kind of actions, but you really understand why so many kids finish like him. going into madness is easier than most ppl think, especially when you're 15 like him. I really doubt he did that just for attention. (edit now that this comment got some likes, I would like to apologize for my english xd, it's not my main language at all)
It doesn't help that most kids come hone to an empty house after a hellish day at school AND the bullying doesn't end at the last bell. With the internet it's 24/7/365. I was bullied in the early 80s. I was lucky to have a stay at home mom and there was no internet or cell phones. When school ended for the day so did the bullying. I don't know how kids do it today

While I agree it was bullying, it wasn't just bullying. You can tell school and homework is making him depressed, eventually the downward spiral happened.

I live in Norfolk and this reminds me of an incident that happened around this time. My entire school (not AHS, but not too far from it) was taken out of class and walked down to the playing field, and told to eat our packed lunches and not worry about things. We sat on the playing field all day until home time, and the next day we were told that someone had called a bomb threat into the school. We just kinda messed around eating snacks all day, and none of us quite grasped why the adults were so distressed.
If public school is so bad that every day it drives kids into becoming extremely depressed, killing themselves or committing acts of violence, you know that there's something SERIOUSLY wrong with it.
It's not school, it's the drugs. Parents fill their kids with speed or downers in order to get away from their responsibilities and it's driving kids insane.
This isnt entirely untrue; tho its worth considering that it does that to people who are alrdy predisposed to mental health problems. Mental health needs to be addressed and ideally far sooner than it was here. SirTom made many posts that were crys for help of a person contemplating ending life; no doubt these signs were noticed by people in his life who ignored or dismissed such. His parents and teachers shud have intervened to get him seeing a psychiatrist or therapist far sooner; but mental health is stigmatized to such a hvy extent that people dont do such even when all the signs are there.
I don't think it's so much to do with public school (though it has plenty of issues) than it is the internet itself. Science has shown an increase in depression, anxiety, etc. among teens due to social media. A lot of these school shooters are raised by the internet rather than parents. There's no restrictions. Like sir tom said, he was living in a fantasy world- lost touch with reality.

Poor kid. When you’re having trouble in high school it’s so easy to feel like that’s your entire world and that there’s no future to look forward to, like it just doesn’t exist. After high school the world opens up, and high school just turns into this thing that happened before your real life. You meet new people in new circumstances and you can be yourself, and in doing that make your life whatever you want it to be. Keep your chin up young people.

@@illeagle9560 yep they are at about 110,000 games and they also have archived every flash animation on newgrounds (I think its called "newgrounds auditorium")I have a backup of every version of flashpoint since developers like nitrom requested they don't be in it (which means in the next version they remove it) doing this I just re import them into the new versions.
Newgrounds has been preparing for the end of Flash for about a decade prior. Unlike the casual user, they knew it was becoming an obsolete format and would be dropped eventually.
Newgrounds is such an awesome memory from my teen years and the only time I attempted to make a flash movie with a buddy , we finished it but lord was it terrible. We were still proud of it though and just thinking of everything we saw and played on that site is amazing.
It sounds like he did have some hatred for ppl associated with his school. Fortunately, he was stopped before anything could've been escalated. I went to university with some of the students of Columbine HS who were at the school during the infamous shooting that took place there. Some of those ppl have some real traumatizing memories from that day. It was surreal to listen to them recount the events from their point of view.
I was expecting a story with an ethical example of doxxing someone, not Tom being terrible about internet privacy (especially given when all this happened)

All of that happened because srpelo made a cartoon making fun of storytime animators and egoraptor got mad because he is now working with some of those storytime animators.

It's pretty rare for a story like this to seemingly have a wholesome ending in which the culprit regains his dignity and sanity, and nobody gets hurt. Nice to see, if the testimony shared near the end is indeed true.
Wow this is kind of sad. He seems to have been so creative and intelligent. The video games and him talking to others about it gave me a feeling of inspiration. He seemed to be unstoppable in his motivation to create. Breaks my heart that he could have gotten therapy and never had anyone try to help him with mental health. Some people take their own lives, some take others out of anguish, misery and self hatred. Its just so sad to think how many people walked by him, or talked to him and knew he was not well and didn’t help. 😔
I still go to Newgrounds to this day. A piece of my childhood I’ve never let go. I remember all of this happening and people talking about it in the forums. I didn’t engage to much because I thought it was just an elaborate troll that people were falling for.

One thing that has me salty about RUclips creators is how much talent and straight up know-how it took to be an old-school creator. Back in the day there were no short cuts and people did it for the love and/or the betterment of the community. Skip to today and you have these pleb "influencers” with 0 talent that just copy/paste the latest trend and actually make a damn livable income in the process. Hopefully the internet will go through cycles like music where what was once the thing to do eventually becomes lame and then 10 years later it is cool again. A renaissance of true creativity may be around the corner. Keep doing what you do and shedding light on the internet that we remember actually meaning something deeper than an endless pile of clickbait mr. wavy *salute*

I used to love playing/watching/rating new submissions because even the bad ones were hilarious, and the good ones left a better impression on me because I had such low expectations. It was just pure unfiltered early internet shit kids my age or a few years older were making and it was the best.
Oh yeah I remember that, feels lika lifetime ago. Lots of B Spears content on NG back then. I'm pretty sure there was a Britney dress up game (You could take her clothes off & put them back on.) But I'm positive there was a Misty from Pokemon dress up game- & lets say that, "the carpets matched the drapes." I played that 1 a lot for a drag & drop flash game- & it probably turned many a preteen boy into a sicko.
There's also the Newgrounds animator who started a cult where he says that humans are the descendents of Atlantians, Martians and Time Traveling Space Jews. Along with saying that Emma Watson is the second coming of Christ.

Direct threats against schools should definitely always be reported and acted upon. Even if its just a kid who isn't very smart trying to be 'edgy', them getting a talking to by authorities should be enough to clue them in. For the others, it would hopefully enable them to get the help they need. But jokes and talking about school attacks in the news... eh... that is much, much more difficult to read anything into. When I was in school in the 90s, just before Columbine (I think I graduated 1 or 2 years before Columbine happened) there were shootings, and my friend group was "the weird kids" and we definitely joked about such things and did things that would definitely land us in prison or something today despite most of us being pacifists. One of my friends and I tried designing a board game based on the idea of school shootings (we didnt know much about game mechanics though and the one time we tried to play it, it was slow and boring), it was mostly a comment on the fact that it was usually a kid that had been rejected and bullied by the students striking back at the bullies and groups of students that always got special treatment from the school authorities, and how much of a media spectacle the news stations turned everything into, so you'd get more 'points' based on the social clique of the victim and more bonus if you took them out near a window. If you take away the freedom of speech and tolerance of 'troubling ideas' like these... you WILL get more actual actions instead. It's an outlet. Lots of kids are angry, and in many cases their anger is completely justified. You can't just knuckle them under and force them to be happy. People don't work like that. It's like trying to hold onto sand. The tighter you grasp it, the more you're going to lose. In response to Columbine, which happened at a brand new school with tons of surveillance and 'security' tech... they put that tech in other schools. And attacks went up. Now, attacks only happen at schools with cameras and all the things that are claimed to 'prevent' such things. Absurd that 'treat them worse' is always the reflex action.

Your comment about playing flash games on the library computer reminded me of the ONE computer the students had access to in our school library. We had to book time to be able to use it. I was lucky in a way that I was born with 2 different genetic conditions that stopped me being able to run properly (femoral anteversion with compensatory external tibia torsion mixed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome) so spent every PE lesson in the library so had more access time. This was when the Doomsday disc and special reader was being sent to schools in the UK.

For those who suffered from depression and bullying caused by their teacher and classmates, you know how easy it is to develop an unconditional hatred agaisnt society, humanity and espacially your school. Fortunately most ppl in that condition have a mental health good enough to stop them to do that kind of actions, but you really understand why so many kids finish like him.

It doesn't help that most kids come hone to an empty house after a hellish day at school AND the bullying doesn't end at the last bell. With the internet it's 24/7/365. I was bullied in the early 80s. I was lucky to have a stay at home mom and there was no internet or cell phones. When school ended for the day so did the bullying. I don't know how kids do it today

I live in Norfolk and this reminds me of an incident that happened around this time. My entire school (not AHS, but not too far from it) was taken out of class and walked down to the playing field, and told to eat our packed lunches and not worry about things. We sat on the playing field all day until home time, and the next day we were told that someone had called a bomb threat into the school. We just kinda messed around eating snacks all day, and none of us quite grasped why the adults were so distressed.
If public school is so bad that every day it drives kids into becoming extremely depressed, killing themselves or committing acts of violence, you know that there's something SERIOUSLY wrong with it.
In my opinion it's not even really public schools. It's the shitty people that come from every ass crack of the earth who all get put there.

Parents fill their kids with speed or downers in order to get away from their responsibilities and it's driving kids insane.
This isnt entirely untrue; tho its worth considering that it does that to people who are alrdy predisposed to mental health problems. Mental health needs to be addressed and ideally far sooner than it was here. SirTom made many posts that were crys for help of a person contemplating ending life; no doubt these signs were noticed by people in his life who ignored or dismissed such. His parents and teachers shud have intervened to get him seeing a psychiatrist or therapist far sooner; but mental health is stigmatized to such a hvy extent that people dont do such even when all the signs are there.

I don't think it's so much to do with public school (though it has plenty of issues) than it is the internet itself. Science has shown an increase in depression, anxiety, etc. among teens due to social media. A lot of these school shooters are raised by the internet rather than parents. There's no restrictions. Like sir tom said, he was living in a fantasy world- lost touch with reality.

Poor kid. When you’re having trouble in high school it’s so easy to feel like that’s your entire world and that there’s no future to look forward to, like it just doesn’t exist. After high school the world opens up, and high school just turns into this thing that happened before your real life. You meet new people in new circumstances and you can be yourself, and in doing that make your life whatever you want it to be. Keep your chin up young people.

@@illeagle9560 yep they are at about 110,000 games and they also have archived every flash animation on newgrounds (I think its called "newgrounds auditorium")I have a backup of every version of flashpoint since developers like nitrom requested they don't be in it (which means in the next version they remove it) doing this I just re import them into the new versions.
Newgrounds has been preparing for the end of Flash for about a decade prior. Unlike the casual user, they knew it was becoming an obsolete format and would be dropped eventually.

It sounds like he did have some hatred for ppl associated with his school. Fortunately, he was stopped before anything could've been escalated.
I went to university with some of the students of Columbine HS who were at the school during the infamous shooting that took place there. Some of those ppl have some real traumatizing memories from that day. It was surreal to listen to them recount the events from their point of view.
I was expecting a story with an ethical example of doxxing someone, not Tom being terrible about internet privacy (especially given when all this happened)

Wow this is kind of sad. He seems to have been so creative and intelligent. The video games and him talking to others about it gave me a feeling of inspiration. He seemed to be unstoppable in his motivation to create. Breaks my heart that he could have gotten therapy and never had anyone try to help him with mental health. Some people take their own lives, some take others out of anguish, misery and self hatred. Its just so sad to think how many people walked by him, or talked to him and knew he was not well and didn’t help. 😔
I still go to Newgrounds to this day. A piece of my childhood I’ve never let go. I remember all of this happening and people talking about it in the forums. I didn’t engage to much because I thought it was just an elaborate troll that people were falling for.

One thing that has me salty about RUclips creators is how much talent and straight up know-how it took to be an old-school creator. Back in the day there were no short cuts and people did it for the love and/or the betterment of the community. Skip to today and you have these pleb "influencers” with 0 talent that just copy/paste the latest trend and actually make a damn livable income in the process. Hopefully the internet will go through cycles like music where what was once the thing to do eventually becomes lame and then 10 years later it is cool again. Direct threats against schools should definitely always be reported and acted upon. Even if its just a kid who isn't very smart trying to be 'edgy', them getting a talking to by authorities should be enough to clue them in. For the others, it would hopefully enable them to get the help they need. But jokes and talking about school attacks in the news... eh... that is much, much more difficult to read anything into.
When I was in school in the 90s, just before Columbine (I think I graduated 1 or 2 years before Columbine happened) there were shootings, and my friend group was "the weird kids" and we definitely joked about such things and did things that would definitely land us in prison or something today despite most of us being pacifists. One of my friends and I tried designing a board game based on the idea of school shootings (we didnt know much about game mechanics though and the one time we tried to play it, it was slow and boring), it was mostly a comment on the fact that it was usually a kid that had been rejected and bullied by the students striking back at the bullies and groups of students that always got special treatment from the school authorities, and how much of a media spectacle the news stations turned everything into, so you'd get more 'points' based on the social clique of the victim and more bonus if you took them out near a window. If you take away the freedom of speech and tolerance of 'troubling ideas' like these... you WILL get more actual actions instead. It's an outlet. Lots of kids are angry, and in many cases their anger is completely justified. You can't just knuckle them under and force them to be happy. People don't work like that. It's like trying to hold onto sand. The tighter you grasp it, the more you're going to lose. In response to Columbine, which happened at a brand new school with tons of surveillance and 'security' tech... they put that tech in other schools. And attacks went up. Now, attacks only happen at schools with cameras and all the things that are claimed to 'prevent' such things. Absurd that 'treat them worse' is always the reflex action.

Your comment about playing flash games on the library computer reminded me of the ONE computer the students had access to in our school library. We had to book time to be able to use it. I was lucky in a way that I was born with 2 different genetic conditions that stopped me being able to run properly (femoral anteversion with compensatory external tibia torsion mixed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome) so spent every PE lesson in the library so had more access time. This was when the Doomsday disc and special reader was being sent to schools in the UK.
