What a full match to pick to watch. For those of us who are rugby league fans, this one was epic. Just watching it made me out of breath.
... Someone may have informed you already regarding the rugby league terms:
      1. The drop kick from your goal line is a goal line drop out, or just drop out.
      2. Yes you're right, head gear is individual preference. It's something that's more common at the junior level or in American football you call it peewee football.
Otherwise overall great video analysis and honesty. I think you're aware that the more games you watch the more you'll get use to it. The Australian commentary in the NRL is pretty good because they're former players and coaches who explain the game and the players, so you'll learn very quickly as a sports fan.
      From PNG.
      Good Health and Blessings.

I don't normally comment on videos, but felt compelled to after watching this. Admittedly, this is the first of your videos I've seen and I absolutely loved it. Your knowledge of our game as a foreigner (no offence intended) is very impressive. It's not that common that an American takes such an interest in our game and enjoys it as much as you both did. It's exciting for myself as a life long NRL fan to watch the genuine excitement and appreciation you both expressed as you watched the SOO highlights. You found yourself a new subscriber today, mate.
As for the game, it was the best game of rugby league I've seen in a very long time (since my South Sydney Rabbitohs won the grand final in 2014). So great choice to react to it.

There are players from other national teams who'd give their right arm to play. Origin began in 1980, with the current format, 3-game series from 1982. Of the 42 series and 120+ games played, only 6 points separate the two teams. QLD 2064 - NSW 2058.

My brother played club, SOO and represented in the Australian team. He was involved in two amazing moments in this sport. He came on in the last 5 minutes of his first ever SOO , just being given a taste of Origin football. He scored a try in the last seconds to win the game for NSW. In one of his club games, the level from which the SOO players are selected, it was a rainy day, the score was 20-20 and it was seconds to full time. In League, the game doesn’t finish until the ball is not in play, from a tackle, being kicked out, etc. My brother (playing in the forwards because of his size, but had been a centre in his early years) had been running with the ball, but was tackled just inside the opposition's half. The other team were quite ready for the game to finish, so they did not have a marker in front of him. As the siren sounded, he made a small tap of the ball with his hands to his foot, a legal play, then dropkicked a 42m field goal to secure the game 21-20. The other team just stood dumbfounded.

@@RealFansSports The club match was 1987 Parramatta vs St George. It was so long ago (lol) that I forgot the other game was actually an international test match. In 1982 he played in two State of Origin matches, then made his Test debut as a reserve forward against New Zealand in Brisbane, scoring the winning try in Australia's last-minute 11-8 win against the Kiwis. He was selected in Australia’s starting line-up in the Second Test in Sydney. He was then selected in the national team (the Kangaroos) for the tour of Great Britain and France. The Aussie team became known as “The Invincibles” as it steamrolled through England and France to win all 22 games. He played in 14 matches and scored 9 tries, the most by any forward. A goal-kicker at club level, he had a run of 23 in a row at one stage.

The (attacking) players have to be behind the kicker (when kicked in general play) only at the time of the kick, or hold back 10m from the player with the ball (as you noted) and not get involved in the tackle.
The kick is typically (but not always) on the 5th tackle. It's just the same as kicking on the 4th down in the NFL.
A knock on is from any part of the hand or arm (including shoulder), if the ball bounces off someone's hip, or somewhere else, it is not a knock on. Let me explain that better - if you have the ball, then it cannot bounce forward and hit the ground at all - from any part of your body, because you are in control of the ball. But if you NOT in possession of the ball (defending, attacking or going up for a kick) it is not a knock on if it hits another part of your body and rolls forward (other than your hand, arm or shoulder). So you can accidently bump the ball forward, if it bounces of another part of your body
There are several benefits to kicking the ball back to the defenders early in the tackle count. To maintain good field position (but MUST be confident in your own defense). To keep the fullback (No.1) and often wingers (No. 2 and 5) honest by not knowing which tackle the ball will be kicked. And to tire out the forwards, since they will need to turn and make their way back to the their own team member with the ball, assuming that the kicking/attacking team are diligent in defending against the person carrying the football back (keeping a line, not being too staggered etc). Normally around the 4th and 5th tackle, the full back (free safety) will drop back in anticipation for the kick, the wingers (wide receivers/cornerbacks) will also assist, they defend/attack on the sidelines - they are the outer most position. This means instead of all 13 players up in the line defending (think man to man, in their face style defense) one, two or even three defenders are now holding back anticipating the kick. This may open up the defense (now with less players up front) and encourage the attacking team to 'run the ball' instead of kick - it's not as common but the defenders must always consider it. But if the team is kicking earlier in the tackle count, instead of the obvious kick on the 5th, the defenders may be in two minds when to cover for the kick and yet still keep and eye on attacks out wide (or even in the middle, since the forwards may be more spread out, to cater for less players in the front line of defense). Of course, if a team is deep in their own half and it's the 5th tackle, there is almost no way that attacking team will not kick it - just like 4th down plays, which are more likely to be employed at the end of the game if still behind the scoreboard.
The chip and chase kick is aimed for directly behind the players up front but more important before the full back, its actually not easy. Chip and chase is typically used when the full back is standing deeper anticipating a deep/high kick. It is kicked in the air but not too high.
The grubber kick, you are correct. Kicked along the ground, low and to roll awkwardly to make it difficult for the defenders but also to skid and hold up in the try area.
When kicking out from behind your own try line (i.e. when tackled in your own try area, a safety in the NFL) it is called a drop kick, a drop out kick or just drop out (Rugby Union, not the same game, has the same kicks for different parts of the game). The ball has to bounce on the ground before striking it with your foot (the only time the ball can hit the ground in front of a player without being a knock-on), it is a special type of kick. It is also the same kick required for a drop goal, which is valued at only 1 point (so normally only used towards the end of a tight/close game), this kick is done during normal play and must go over/between the goal posts.
The fullback (No.1) much like free safety has a higher degree of discrepancy on where they place themselves and when, in defending they must always be the deepest man... Always. When attacking, they can stay in the middle, wait for an 'offload' from the bigger men (like a smaller running back finding gaps in the offensive line) or move out wide and link up with the centres and wingers. The centres (No. 3 and 4) feed the wingers, they are typically the next fastest players next to the wingers/fullbacks, but typically a little bigger.
Head gear is just preference. The head contact, no helmets basically.
If you look at the early state of origin games from the 80's, there were fights all the time - this game is nothing like the pro bowl, this is the most serious game played in our competition and the Australian team is selected from the best of these two teams. It is a highly passionate game, even for fans...
These two teams are made up from the best players taken from the NRL league teams (14 teams), with some requirements to where they played in their youth (I won't get into it now), it used to be where they were born (hence the name 'State of Origin'), but that has changed over time. There are often team mates playing against each other in this game. Commitment to the QLD/NSW team is more intense than their own weekly (still professional) team.

@@RealFansSports Well, State of Origin has a very important history and this is important to the intensity and seriousness of the game. I won't go into all of it now, but a lot of it is to do with New South Wales initially being the power base of the game and where the money was, with Queensland being a poorer cousin.
A closer comparison would be a North versus South game, but initially played 20 years after the civil war. Can you imagine the intensity and the feelings, forget who you team mates are in the NFL, this would be about identity, whom you represent, regardless of which team you play for, (where you lived or were born)... with the South constantly carrying the under dog status.
The NFC versus the AFC does not have that same history or intensity of feelings, it's just two conferences (albeit initially two separate competitions).

That was fun to watch guys. You did a good job explaining it considering it's not a sport you grew up with. Someone might have mentioned it already but those kicks from the ingoal are called dropouts. They have to go at least 10m and if they find the sideline after the ball has bounced the team that kicked it gets it back. I'm a Qld fan and it was a massive play from Valentine Holmes to flick it back. Oh, and it wasn't Kalyn Ponga's first Origin but was his first Origin try. I love seeing people get interested in our game. You've got a pretty good grasp of it. Some of the finer points for you.
    - The NSW disallowed try that happened near the posts wasn't because of a knock on. It was because one of the NSW players was fractionally in front of the kicker (offside) and then was within 10 metres of the QLD player when the QLD player touched the ball, then got involved in the play. If you are in front of the kicker, you need to stay minimum 10 metres away from the opposition until they touch the ball before you can get involved.
    - Normally you don't want to kick too early in the tackle count, too often. It takes less energy to attack than defend. Especially when you are 2 players down. Especially when you are playing Origin, which is the highest intensity and fastest version of the game between the games elite.
However, kicking early in the tackle count constantly turns around the opposition forwards, who have to go 50m back towards their own line before they can start advancing again. They probably won't get back to their own line until tackle 3, allowing you to defend against smaller players for the first half of their tackles. It also tires out their forwards making their attack less potent, and gets them tired in defense (opening up space around the middle of the field for your small, quick men to make easier yardage).
    Keep watching!

Great work Zach & your understanding of the game is pretty damn good. So why was this game so special, apart from the intensity? 1. This was game 3 in the series &, after one win each in the previous games, NSW we’re the favourites to win this decider (just a side note: NSW media always have their team as the favourites which we Queenslanders absolutely love 🤣); 2. It was the 1st series as coach for Billy Slater (Billy is regarded as the best fullback in the history of rugby league & was a member of the dominant Qld team that won 12 times over a period of 13 years); 3. Although both teams had a number of key players missing due to injury, Qld lost Cameron Munster (regarded as the best player in Australia at the moment) less than a week before due to Covid. His replacement, Tom Dearden, was dumped last year at club level by his club, the Brisbane Broncos. He moved to the Nth Qld Cowboys under a different coach & his form this year has been so good that Billy Slater included him in the Qld State of Origin squad. Munster’s Covid diagnosis opened up the opportunity for Dearden to play in game 3 & he was incredible; 4. With Munster being unavailable, it meant that other players needed to ‘step up’, & you saw what Kalyn Ponga (3rd try scorer) & Ben Hunt (40/20 kicker & 4th try scorer) did. In fact, given that Qld also lost 2 players for the entire match after the 1st 3 minutes, every player stepped up to do their job.
So was it the greatest state of origin match in history? That’s too hard to call, but after watching every game over the last 42 years it would certainly rate in the top 5. I say that because it was certainly one of the bravest wins by a Qld team, but I know that NSW players & fans are disappointed with how their team played. The greatest game ever would be one where both teams played to their very best ability, both teams & sets of fans were amazed with the performance, but I have no idea which game over the last 42 years that actually was.
Keep up the great work. I know that the boys from both teams will always give 100% for the fans. 👍

@@RealFansSports personally, the most satisfying moment in game 3 was the try by Ben Hunt to win the series (& the story behind all that). In 2015 Ben was the half-back for the Brisbane Broncos, a multi-premiership winning club supported by a fan base with exceptionally high expectations. This team was playing the Nth Qld Cowboys in the grand final & they had lead throughout the match for 79 minutes & 55 seconds. However, the Cowboys scored in the corner right on the 80th minute to tie the score. This meant that the Cowboys halfback, Qld & Australian legend Jonathan Thurston, could win the game & the premiership for the Cowboys if he successfully kicked the conversion from the sideline. The intensity of the moment was insane! Thurston, who historically always nails these long range kicks, made his trademark kick - one that arcs tremendously from right to left as it sails towards the goal posts - however this time it missed agonisingly by millimetres as it ricocheted off the upright. Thurston screamed in frustration as the game went into extra time.
The players regrouped for 2 x 10 minute halves or until one side scored (either through a try, a penalty goal or a field goal). The Cowboys would kick off & the Broncos would receive & have the first possession. Thurston kicked the ball long & high. Ben Hunt positioned himself under the ball (something he had done hundreds of times before) to catch it & pass to one of his monster forwards who was waiting to take that 1st hit up, however, call it bad luck, misfortune or the trials & tribulations of sport, Ben dropped the ball. He knocked it on. He was shattered. A scrum was set, the Cowboys had possession, & within a minute Jonathan Thurston nailed a field goal to steal the grand final from the Broncos (& the very 1st for the Cowboys).
Most of the Broncos fans never forgave Ben for that & the way that he was lambasted was disgusting. The press was ruthless & he & his young family eventually moved away from Qld to escape the pressure.
His winning try in game 3 meant that he had come full circle. He was the hero & he had regained the trust & respect from his harsh critics. For many Ben never had anything to prove, but very few of us ever get to compete at that level, & almost none of us have ever had to experience what that young man did post 2015. His journey in rugby league is such a tremendous life lesson for us all. Well done Ben Hunt.

I’m an Aussie mate (Brisbane, QLD) and I must say that out of all of the ‘American reactions to Rugby League’ that I’ve seen, yours are the most comprehensive and impressive. You’re doing a great job to help promote the game! **another side note for you…those kicks from the in goal area are called ‘drop-outs’, and they must reach the 10 metre line at minimum before they can be regathered by the kicking team (they can go past the line and then bounce back/be tapped back into 10 metre area and play continues no matter who ends up with possession). They can also go long and be kicked 50+ metres downfield. If the ball has travelled more than 10 metres, and bounces over the sideline without being touched by opposition, the kicking team gets possession with a new set of 6 tackles starting at point where ball went out. If ball is touched before going out (past 10 metres), team who didn’t touch the ball last gets a scrum feed in line with that point of ball crossing the sideline. If the ‘drop-out’ doesn’t travel the minimum 10 metres, or goes out of bounds on the full, the opposition is awarded a penalty on the 10 metre line directly in front of the posts, where they have the option to take a penalty shot at goal for 2 points (if kick is successful and goes between the posts and above the crossbar), or they can opt for a ‘tap’ on the same mark and start a new set of 6 tackles in an attempt to score a try** once again, I hope this helps clarify things. I’m always happy to answer any questions u may have, to the best of my ability. Keep up the awesome work 💪👍

    Great commentary mate.
    You pretty much nailed everything.
The Rugby League (NRL) changed the game a lot around the 80's, mostly for the good.
Removing shoulder charges, and tripping, and introducing the 40/20, and the 10 metre, rule, and much more, in an effort to speed up the game.
    Anyway,
    I'm at 16 minutes.
What you're talking about, is a 'goal-line drop out', that is: a drop kick from off your goal line.
You have to take a goal-line drop out if you are tackled, or otherwise ground the ball, inside your own goal.
Mostly, when you take the drop out, you try and kick the casing off it.
But, at the pointy end of the game, you might try a short kick, and try and get the ball back.
    It must go 10 metres.
Whether the kick is long or short it CAN NOT go out on the full.
This is the same for any kick in the game, with the ONE exception of kicking for 'touch' after being awarded a penalty. Alternatively, if within range, you can take a place kick for 2 points when awarded a penalty.
The 40/20 is just that, kick it inside your 40, have it bounce IN THE FIELD OF PLAY, and go out past the 20.
You can also do a 20/40.
Great to see other countries enjoying the NRL.
