@@gohammtv The short version is the teams are picked based on which state the players are from. The eligibility rules have changed few times over the years, but the current one is mainly requires the player to have lived in the state before they turned 13. It used to be 16, but they lowered it a while ago.
The Origin concept has been around since 1980, with one game played in 80 and 81, and a 3 match series since 82. Prior to that, QLD and NSW teams were based on where the players currently lived. Which meant NSW won most of the time.

Great to see your interest in the Origin series. If you are not already aware the Origin concept began due to Queensland v New South Wales teams were selected on where they played rather than where they came from. At the time a lot of the good players from Queensland played in the NSW competition and that resulted in Queensland born players playing against Queensland. This caused a lot of bitterness between the States and especially during the early years of Origin there was genuine hatred between players who were teammates in the NSW competition.

Queensland won the first game and are playing at their home ground for the next game tonight, as well as New South Wales has 3-star players out injured,..... so Queensland is firm-betting favorites.
However, what makes State Of Origin really special is that something totally unexpected often happens so nobody would be surprised if New South Wales wins, therefore making game 3 (in 3 weeks' time) a decider.

really pleased that you are enjoying your rugby - you don't have to dive to score a try, (as at 5:05) you just have to touch the ball down whilst being in full control of it; diving in gives a better chance of keeping control of the ball. The games are not always high scoring - the best State of Origin game I saw was in 1995 Queensland 2 New South Wales 0 (the only score was one kicked penalty goal) It was solid defence all game and I think it one of the best games I have ever seen.

So how it works in Rugby league is you get 6 tackles. On the 5th tackle teams tend to kick to either get ground and make the opposition start their 6 tackle set from further away, or they kick to be able to contest and possibly force and error or come down with it themselves. Also State or origin is the best players from each state competing in a 3 game series. In NBA terms its like East vs West except more competitive than the classic all star game.

All these players are from the NRL. Made up of 16 teams all over the east coast of Australia and a new Zealand team called the warriors. Queensland and NSW are 2 states and you get selected from the national league and represent the state you were born in. It's the toughest hardest most physical example of our Sport. Playing 3 games every year in June July. They rotate the games usually one outside Queensland and NSW then a home game for each team. You need to watch NRL biggest hits
No helmets no padding these boys are as hard as nails and as fit as you can be. 40 min a half non stop 13 players a side 4 reserves on the bench that can rotate. Also watch Australia v England back in the 80s 90s in international games Australia New Zealand and England and now days Tonga are the leading teams playing a world cup every 4 years with about 16 countries represented. State of Origin means the best players from each geographic state that you played your first club game for, the best players who started at Queensland vs. the best players who started in New South Wales. So it would be like California vs. New York State, or probably a better way to describe it, the best players who started their career in the AFC vs the best players who started their career in the NFC in NFL.
As a result you see players who normally play their club level together, playing against each other. They play 3 times per year to see which state is best. That's why there is so much hype for these 3 games.

Queenslander here. Yes you must apply downward pressure on the ball onto the ground for it to be a try...4 points. Both teams get 6 tackles/plays. Most times a team with the ball will kick on the last tackle because if they are tackled with the ball on the 6th tackle/play they must hand it to the other team. It is like NFL where you get I think 4 plays or downs to make 10 yards and if you are not going to make it you punt it downfield.

  • @paulblackburn5356
    @paulblackburn5356 Год назад

In rugby league, you have to try catch a kick. Any player who was behind the kicker or is behind him when the ball comes down, any player can catch the ball. In NFL, players on the kicking team can only play the ball if the catcher fumbles. That is why players put their body on the line under a kick.

  • @Wokabaut
    @Wokabaut 6 месяцев назад

    Some rules:
the ball has to be grounded ingoal without fumbling to be considered a try.
passes are always backwards, if the pass is done foreward, it is penalty.
tackles cannot be made above the head area, if its intentional, it can result in a player penalised.
kicks are done mainly at the 5th tackle count, and ball is usually kicked by the half back(7).
a try is 4 points, a kick for goal is 2 points, a field goal is 1point, and a penalty kick goal is 2points.
...these are many more rules, but these are the main.

It has history, passion, dedication that goes beyond money, physical intensity and a consistently close score line that goes to the wire so many many times. Also these are prime athletes at their physical peak who can rightly be compared against elite athletes anywhere else in the world. Just a little fun info for you that I thought you might like, in American football a game that came from rugby you score a "touch down" which is a throw back to the games roots in Rugby even though you don't touch the ball down.
In Rugby you score a "Try" because in the past touching the ball down gave your team no points, it gave you an attempt to "try" and kick the ball over the post, which is known as a convertion.
"You converted the try in to points".
    History lesson over lol
There are 2 major Rugby compitions outside the world cup and one of them called "The Rugby Championship" is due to start in a few weeks, its a 4 way between some of the top sides in the world, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Argentina, I'd highly recommend trying to find them games yo watch or at least the highlights.
First game is South Africa (current world champions) Vs Australia. 16.00 GMT
Second is Argentina Vs New Zealand 20.00 GMT

Kick off of the second game is about 30 minutes away. You mention the kicking a few times. Teams have possession for 6 tackles. If they get tackled on the sixth, then they just hand the ball over. So it's pretty common to kick after the fifth tackle (like punting on the fourth down in NFL). Depending on field position, you might kick long for territory or some form of attacking kick if you are close to the tryline. A lot of attacking kicks are 'bombs' - high kicks that allow the attacking players (who have to be behind the kicker when they kick it) to get there and contest it. An interesting thing about the last Queensland try was that a frontrow forward (typically the biggest, most powerful players, but not the fastest or most athletic, on the team) out-jumped arguably the best fullback (typically a very fast, skillful player who makes a lot of kick returns) in the league. The fullback is also the captain of the frontrower's club team, the Roosters.

You get 6 tackles before your team has to hand ball over so on 5th tackle they often kick

even if the ball doesn’t touch the ground if you lose it and it fumbles into the player tackling you before you regather the ball it will still be called a knock on because you have lost possession which we call a lose carry

How to watch State of Origin in the USA. Fox Sports have the broadcast rights for the entire 2023 NRL season, which includes three regular season games per week, the entire finals series including the grand final, and of course all three games of State of Origin.

State of origin is a 3 game series played annually between Queensland (QLD) and New South Wales (NSW). These are representative sides. It is quite common to see two NRL team mates face off against each other in State of Origin. Based on where you played the majority of your junior Rugby League is which team you will play for. So if you grew up playing footy in QLD and were good enough for selection then you would play for QLD. NSW has the larger pool of talent to pull from and generally have the best side on paper. QLD have a knack though of finding a way to win games that NSW have already started celebrating a win.

When you are over the try line... That is the end zone in nfl... You still have ground the ball or put the ball down on the turf. Not drop it but place the ball down... That can be awarded a try.....i hope I explained clearly..

That must have been on can hill, now the eastern stand.... I can still remember the call of "bumblebee" and the cans would fly. I was only talking to a friend the other day about seeing a NSW supporter running across the front of that area with a big flag that had "Benny (Elias) is King" on it. He got absolutely pelted with cans. Brave man.

Ball has to atleast touch the white line for it to be a try, but the deepest line on the field is considered out. Anywhere in the “try line area” is a try

Mate opening game for the NRL next year is coming to Vegas in March, I believe Brisbane Boncos and another team will be a season opening game there. There was also talk of having a state of origin game over there in the States again, National Rugby League or NRL played an exhibition State of Origin game at Longbeach California in 1987 but I think it was a flop although footage I saw showed the Americians like it and the stadium was full enough for an exhibition game where one player suffered a broken jaw.

Generally you kick on the fifth tackle. Fifth and last, if you dont kick it on the fifth and you get tackled its a turn over and you lose potential field position.

That game one win by the queensland maroons is one of the best wins and will go down in history.... Just so you know.. There are 13 players(on each side).. Now one of the queensland maroons got sin binned.. Meaning, he was penalised and given a 10minute off the field. So now the blues have a player advantage. Also the maroons have had 2 injuries on the flanks/wing.. And had no interchange or substitute. So queensland were trailing by 2 points while having a player down and 2 injured players with 7minutes remaining on the clock yet pulled up a miricle to score 2 tries and win the game at full time..
