    Brad, Thanks for the graeat Video. What is your experience in playing 1:1 4k RIP with (Dolby Vison and Atmos) ? I saw some forums talking about device heat .. Can you please share your experience after 1 year of use of this device

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  3 года назад +2

      I have not noticed any overheating issues in our regular use but I don't know if I have anything that specifically has Dolby vision and Atmos so I will have to take a look at my library or see if there are some samples online I can test with and let you know. I know with running the latest version of firmware everything has been stable and no issues with my configuration.

    No it did not but I bought a new remote nvidia pro remote .It will arrive Saturday I’m not sure how to program the remote because I have all my apps on there perfectly so if you could possibly send me a link, but mind you all my apps are perfect I just want to get the remote to work the way used to. Because across From the back button the round button Always bring me to the home screen of the Nvidia shield pro and that’s with the work but what I did I went into button manager and programmed it for the main screen to come up after a long click but I like things perfect so like I said if you could send me a link on how to just basically program the remote to the Nvidia shield pro I’ll be happy. You’ve been so helpful thank you for everything and your concern greatly greatly appreciate

      Here's a link on how to pair the new remote. www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/connect/#shield-remote
      IF you can email me through the contact page and send me a link to a video of how it currently behaves I can try to better understand what it's doing. Did you setup your phone as a backup remote yet? With the new remote it has a find remote feature which is great since my kids lose it all the time.

      @Scott Tait I prefer watching paint dry over watching windows updates, but what would you recommend how I could improve my content moving forward to be better than watching paint dry? Now this is one of my earlier videos, so I definitely made improvement since then but I'm definitely open to any constructive criticism to help improve my channel and help out my viewers with any technical problems or issues. If you have a moment I invite you to check out some of my newer videos, the ones I release on Tuesdays are typically pretty short and to the point if you're looking for a shorter video and the ones on Fridays are typically longer and more technical.

This Nvidia shield is still our daily driver on our main TV and have changed different subscription services a couple of times now but in this video I did rant about DirecTV's unethical billing practices. Shiny tech things, did you use shield tv on a 4k tv? what brand? because 4k tvs themselves do the natural work of uppscalling, if it was on a 4k tv then does shield still work better than 4k tv itself?
    i'm in doubt between apple tv and shied tv

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  4 года назад +1

      Yes it was on a 4K UHD TV the part of the video that I made with my phone in the first video I did on the shield you can actually see the printed words in the background get sharper on RUclips. I'm blown away by how well this works. If you are still unsure if recommend buying from a local retailer and test it out and if you're unsatisfied then return it and try out another device. It is by far the most powerful box you can buy hands down, but if you only want to stream stuff and aren't impressed with the upscaling then I'd recommend a Amazon Fire Stick 4K which I have on another TV in the house at a fraction of the cost. But if you game on it then the Nvidia shield pro for sure.

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  3 года назад +1

      It depends on what all was damaged. First I would take a good up close look with magnification to see if the button somehow got unaligned underneath the plastic and above the rubber gasket piece that pushes the button up towards the case. I'm assuming that you already removed the batteries and put them back in and it still has the same issue correct? Depending on the response from you as to what you see you may end up needing to attempt repairing it and being okay with possibly completely breaking it or replacing it but more on that in just a sec. what you can do for the time being is installed The shield app on your phone and as long as you are connected via Wi-Fi to the same network you can control the shield with your phone as the remote. Now if you end up having to replace it then I would check to see if it is still under any warranty as well as if you might have purchased it using a credit card like the Costco Citi card or American Express as they can sometimes double or triple your warranty. Let me know and I'll do the best I can to help out.

    Is it worth to buy it ? With that problems and that storage problems ? I thought I could install all games and apps on usb stick or external hard drive ! But if that's impossible then the nvidia shield tv 2019 is a bad design! Thank you for your honesty and
    Effort.
    Best regards,

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  3 года назад +1

      It really just depends on how much stuff you want to install on it there's not really any better hardware from a competitor that I am aware of even now in 2021. If you are looking to just install lots of games then you might be better off building a home theater PC (HTPC) instead of using an Android or TV box type solution. Just recently my SSD might have failed (I need to disconnect it and connect it to a Linux computer to take a look and see what exactly happened but either the drive is dead or something got messed up with one of the partitions) so once I finish that then with all of the software improvements since the original release I will probably do another video update on this because lots of things have been fixed so it could be a good fit for you. What exactly are you looking to be running?

      I'm not sure what the failure rate is on the remote. Did you try removing the batteries for q bit and then out them back in? Could also be a bad accelerometer from the factory that you may need to contact Nvidia for a replacement under warranty.

  • @clarencejonesiii7970
    @clarencejonesiii7970 4 года назад +1

    Just curious. My new Nvidia shield remote is killing battery life. I can put two brand new Duracells in the remote and within a week I'm replacing them, and that's with minimal use.

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  4 года назад +2

      Fist double check that you have all firmware up to date because the controller does have its own firmware. Next, the next time it stops working take the batteries out out and put them back in again first before changing them out. I've had the batteries get loose from my kid dropping. Also interactive shows on Netflix because holding the remote with any motion triggers the lights which drains the batteries. We just buy the mega pack from Costco Kirkland brand batteries. They last over a month if the kids don't use it because they hold the remote all the time. Be sure to install the shield app on your phone as a backup remote.

  • @aldigangster123
    @aldigangster123 4 года назад +1

    Good insight.
    Note, that there is apparently an option to move the internal storage over to an external HD/SSD plugged in via USB. So you're not limited to 16 GB.
    Also one important feature I've found the Shield Pro to have, is being able to run Plex Media Server.
    Amazon's Fire TV 4K does not support this.
    Nvidia Shield Pro can run the CPU intensive transcoding processes, which are required by Plex.
    Thus, you do not need an expensive WD NAS system, or separate PC running Plex Media Server. Big plus for Shield Pro.

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  4 года назад +2

      Yes, you can run a Plex server on it, however it could impact your performance as it's transcoding streams for friends or family while you are playing a game on it. Nvidia says under certain conditions and formats using
      h.264 you could do up to 2-3 streams as a Plex server.
      support.plex.tv/articles/221099648-limitations-when-running-plex-media-server-on-nvidia-shield/
      So if you want more streams and no performance impact while playing games then a dedicated Intel Celeron CPU with quicksync and Plex pass to use hardware acceleration will outperform this and being separate so performance of the shield won't take a hit while gaming.

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  4 года назад +1

      That's weird if it makes a difference. Unless your WiFi is faster than your ethernet. Do you have full gigabit? Check the cable, some only have 4 wires instead of 8 which makes it run at 10/100.

    • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  4 года назад +1

      I agree, but if all you have is a shield it could work but there's a ton of variables. I would not recommend to transcode more than 1-2 streams reliably so direct play by pre-encoding content for direct playing on your client devices. You can even do this with a raspberry pi but again direct play is the key for it to work. Stay tuned as I'm working on a Ultimate Budget Plex server video video series.

      The base model costs $149.99, while the Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) is priced at $199.99 which is the one I'm reviewing. The base model is in the shape of a tube and has less RAM. • @ShinyTechThings
      @ShinyTechThings  4 года назад +1

      If you are saying that you are buffering videos I'll break it down a little more for you. If legitimate video sources like Netflix and Hulu are buffering you either have too slow of internet or poor wifi so try to hardwire it. If hardwired and those services still buffer then it's a ISP or route issue from your location to the destination. Now if it's the pirated video torrenting stuff that's buffering it's because your ISP is deprioritizes torrent traffic to discourage the behavior. You may or may not have luck with a VPN to get around this. Now if it's a Plex server at a friend's who lives 20 miles away and they don't have an upstream issue then it's the ISP tampering with traffic again. Do a point to point VPN to your friends and then stream it. Hope that clears it up but let me know. I know some people who got the tube one of the shield that's cheaper and they like it but their Wi-Fi goes to sleep sometimes and doesn't come back up without a reboot

This is one of my earlier videos so I definitely have improved to some have told me so on my performance in front of the camera as well as better video equipment and on my last video released yesterday just upgraded my sound a bit as well. Today I forgot to turn on the sound amplifier during an unboxing using my new sound gear 🤦‍♂️🤣

    The shield has major problems with CEC and ARC. Nvidia needs to sort it out but still has not from 3 updates ago at minimum, they say switch of CEC. What the heck did we spend load of money for. my panasonic tv and denon amp switch back on after being switched off, it can be couple of minutes to 10 minutes or lot more. about time we got what we paid for. Nvidia.

      From what I've read most manufacturers don't follow the specs of the protocols. I have mine setup like this (Shield TV Pro --> LG TV --> Onkyo Receiver) the connection between the TV and my Receiver is over an optical audio cable. When I use the shield remote it turns on and off the TV and wakes up or sleeps the shield. Audio controls pass through just fine in my configuration to the receiver. What does your configuration look like?

      I have a panasonic tv with shield connected via hdmi from denon amp, via ARC, setting are switched to HDMI control on, ARC on. Had to sw off CRC switch on shield on all three settings in display , turn on tv, set tv input to shield and wake shield. When either or all of these are on shield wakes randomly when everything is switched of. Hope that makes sense.?.

      So it looks like this on your end?
      Shield --> Receiver --> TV? Have you tried like my configuration to see if the TV can go the other direction to the receiver via optical audio?

      @@ShinyTechThings no. Not yet. Thing is. All was well and has been fot about 18 months. But since i think last two updates they have really messed the system up. I use it for Dolby x, and Dolby atoms . Will that still work fine. ?

    can you plug a 2tb external ntfs drive with mkv and mp4 movies n tv shows and play with the default shield video player (if there is one) without having to install stuff. I'd like to be able to unplug the hard drive, move it to my PC and delete and load new movies to it from time to time, then plug it back into the sheild and watch. Like the micca player I used to have. nice vid.

      From what I remember when I plugged it in it reformatted it for EXT3 or 4. I'll have to unplug it and check from my Linux box and let you know. Might be a few days though with the holidays here, schedule is crazy right now.

      @@ShinyTechThings ok. I'm on windows so it would be NFTS formatted to allow for the large mkv files. The micca player I just plug in the drive and go to the folder with the movies. I'm hoping its that easy with the Shield without having to jump through hoops.

      @@busywl69 I haven't tried it yet but I will and I'll post a video on it. I've been sick so I've not been on any of my devices for days. Just starting to get back online. Not sure what's worse, being sick or having Wi-Fi withdrawals from being sick 🤓🤣
