Gotta love the continuity in the video where you still have foam stuck around your fingernails. Odin was the first tutorial prop video I ever watched and the reason I completed so many of my own props. Thank you for doing new things!
Highlander is one of my favorite movies of all time, so much so I have reproductions of both of Connor's swords. His Macleod family sword and a cheaper, non-film accurate katana that has the dragon head handle finished in more of a bronze color, not even the right handguard on it, but still pretty cool. Also came with two smaller blades that also had the same handle as the full length katana, but they just cut the handles shorter for each, but kept the dragon's head on the pommel.
There are a lot of different ways to build the Kurgan's sword from Highlander, but for Odin....... there can only be one! Highlander 7 - The Foamsmithing - staring Odin Abbott Again a really nice sword shaped prop! Thank you for putting out yet another awesome tutorial/ build along.
I always considered this sword to be a great example of simple and realistic fantasy weaponry. Really like the attention to detail in this Odin. It may be relatively simple, but still looks great
@@reaper_exd7498 yea that’s true. If it wasn’t split into multiple pieces it would be better, but the overall shape and design is a good example of a functional fantasy sword. Many fantasy weapons either have too many spikes and serrations, or they’re huge and heavy, or they’re just too oddly shaped in general
So awesome Odin! This is the only destination where you’ll see something like the Kurgan’s sword! Now I’ve got beat my drum, Robotech/Macross Veritech pilot helmet!
The shoulder on the blade is called a ricasso, which is just an unsharpened portion of the blade below the guard. Some large swords turned this into a "sub hilt" with a leather wrapped ricasso and even a secondary guard sometimes.
This might be a pain to do, but I think it'd make things more accurate. For the grips on swords like this, you could use a smaller diameter pvc pipe but squash it some so that it was an oval or pill shape of the right width and align that with the blade when you attach it. The grips on real bladed weapons aren't round and I doubt the movie prop had a round grip either. Just a suggestion for future builds. :)
Oddly enough, the sword grip in the movie is round. That is if I'm remembering right. It's suuuuper 80s so accuracy wasn't that important. Look up the backflipping scene, you'll see what I mean lol
Nice....I have the same dremel tool, over 25 years ago my wife bought this for me on our first Christmas together. It is one of my most prized possessions. It still works great....
Great build!! Great movie!!! Yes, you should make Kurgan’s skull helmet, but now that you have Kurgan’s sword, you should make McLeod’s katana as well! Awesome vid as always!!
Fantastic video! I think the chrome sword was to run electricity through to make the swords spark when they hit. It's an old school special effect that they even used in Pirates of the Caribbean.
I've seen the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Highlander movies, and the Series, more times than I can count. I love seeing people make props from the franchise. If you're looking for suggestions from other franchises, the Stargate franchise is full of cool stuff you can make. Everything from Goa'uld, Jaffa, Ori, Ancient, and Asgard armor to staff weapons, they've got it all. It's my 2nd favorite franchise, and I've seen so few people make props from it.
I made the helmet a long time ago, when I was in my very early 20s (a build up of liquid latex and cotton wool, over a cardboard skeleton); lasted a long time, and even scared the hell out of my sister when she walked into my garage almost 15 years later. Now, it'd be a very easy build with the materials available! EVA sheets and some foam clay. Worth a try!
"The movie was great, the series was good, we'll stop there." Meanwhile, lovely sword. When I was a LARPer I made a couple of McLeod Claymores, but back then we had to pause the VHS to see close ups, it was long before the Internet and the lovely people at Propstore .
a great build, one of my all time favorite movie swords and films, but general katanna's (michale ironside) spring loaded broadsword is still my favorite also '''i wanted to be able to 'lean it up on it's point','' and then attempt the 'hi im candy part' i believe you :)
I could be wrong but I believe that the reason for the two swords was that one of them was a special effects version that was created to produce electrical sparks when the Highlander’s Katana made contact and was dragged along the Kurgan’s swords length.
Propstore recently sold a Sword of the Daywalker, and I was able to finally get measurements and close up pics of it, so I could draw one in Fusion 360. When my Elegoo Jupiter finally shows up I’ll be able to print it out.
A very very good full build kurgan sword in my opinion. As always when are you going to do the three guyver units in there carrying case idea? Loving the build as all ways. Stay safe all.

I freaking loved the first movie! Okay, you can say what you like about the series, but it kept that love alive and expanded on the mythology. The movie that came afterwards kinda helped add at least one fairly good sequel to the movie collection. Awesome build Oden! I know the answer to why there were multiple swords thought. The chrome one is called the "hero" sword. They would've made that one for closeup shots. Those shots where you focused on the sword or it was a really powerful shot or what have you. The broken down sword was just for the purpose of being broken down and that whole "gag". From having stage combat as part of my degree, the 3rd sword was the actual combat sword. Its lighter and duller because of the choreography. The choreography takes soooooooo long, not only to memorize the scene, but to make sure you can do it without hurting someone thus for being a dull blade too (even though the blade still hurts and can cut you, trust me I know it first hand, or left hand lol) but its lighter as well due to all the training with it. As the rule goes for film making, for one minute of screen time or one minute of choreography, you must have trained for over 20hrs. Now if you've ever held a sword, one of mine specifically is a claymore (a very long sword that causes tons of damage, which is where we get the name for a claymore mine) which is a reproduction (not the actual weight) weights about 15-20lbs. Now then, try runnining the choreography for over 20hrs (which ends up being most likely 40-50hrs) for your one minute of screen time scene, youre going to totally sore and worn out. Granted the smaller blades are a lil lighter but not that much for an actual real blade 10-15lbs + if it were real, so they make they lighter to about 8lbs or so but at the end of training for say 8hrs you are still tired and wore out. So for anyone who might say "oh those action stars don't do much" lol they do tons! Except for the case of Jordie Molla in "Columbiana" I have first hand knowledge he didnt train for that fight scene and Zoe did all the training she could which is why he looks horrible and she looks incredible which she is always! lol
