This video almost made me to go for 2070S but then I remembered why I wanted the new GPU- for HIGHER FPS@1440p than my previous one, not vice versa:P So maybe next gen(and who knows who puts best GPU out by that time, maybe even Intel).

The ray tracing adds so much life to the brutalised architecture of the oldest house. It's hard to explain until you play it with Ray tracing on yourself. The lighting is amazing.
@@Koutsn_ Ray-Tracing alone won't get us past the uncanny valley, it's another step, but you still have sub-par facial animation in most games, poor muscle/movement animation, many games show poor contact with the world with characters clipping through the world or appearing to "skate" on top of the terrain etc. only select objects in a game world can be interacted with, no terrain deformation - poor AI behavior etc etc. - we still have a LONG way to go.
Probably the most well constructed & easy to understand video on modern graphical features. Thanks Alex. Also thanks for the graphical comparison with the console. That was the main reason I initially subbed to DF.
When ray tracing is enabled in this game the environments actually look pre-rendered or even close to photo realism, it's insane that we can achieve that level or realism and fidelity in real time now.
@PardonMySanity The environments look more photo realistic than either of those two games. If you prefer the art style of the other games that fine, but Control's environments look more realistic running on a PC with ray tracing enabled.
@PardonMySanity Maybe you're conflating what looks more appealing to you as being more realistic. I can take a picture of a boring plain piece of drywall in my house and it will look more photo realistic than anything in God of War or Horizon. I prefer how God of War looks over Control, but if I take a screenshot of the forest it's not fooling anyone that it's a real picture of a forest. With Control there are certain parts of the environment with ray tracing enabled that looks near photo realistic, enough that it could fool some people that it's a real photo. Control's artstyle and setting isn't very appealing to me but that doesn't mean on a technical level it's not impressive.
I keep coming back to this video as an education on the history of light rendering techniques. Taking a single scene and adding in technologies one by one with explanations is brilliant.
why should they? they have owned the IP since the first one. i think they may i gotten it before the first one was released, cant recall, but def before the second, and Remedy had rly nothing to do with the 3rd, which was my Favorite, very much liked old make Payne.
FINALY A WEEK AGO I GOT A SSD. AND WHAT SSD? A MONSTER HIGH END SSD MP 600 2TB!. REST OF SYSTEM IS RYZEN 7 1700 16 GB DDR4 3200MHZCL15 GTX 970 G1 GAMING DELLP2416D 24'' 2560X1440 60 HZ IPS! IT runs evrything at max settings 1440p 30+ fps so iam sure it will be ok for Control max settings 1440p 30 fps too. So how many fps will it run at max settings 1440p without Ray tracing? I will play it next week when it releases on steam!
I'd like to add that I'm really disappointed that, for all the other innovative techniques the game supports, Control does not support HDR whatsoever, not even on consoles as far as I know. And HDR adds so most to the image quality in my opinion, it's a real shame they ignored it with this one.
Agreed. When a developer decides to place their game in a world that resembles the real one, especially this eerily mundane one, HDR is an important tool in heightening that reality.
@Source Dasher Dude, pretty much all major games on console support HDR. It's no comparison to Hairworks lol. and the support on PC grows bigger and bigger. Windows itself supports HDR. HDR is here to stay. In fact, Control seems to be the odd exception to this.
@Source Dasher Yeah I run hairworks in The Witcher 3 @ 1440p 120HRz. I own an Oculus Rift for all of my race and flying sims. You sound like a technology hater and an AMD fanboy. Don't you get it? This tech will be cheaper and better implemented in the future. The PC is the place for cutting edge tech, if you don't like it stick with your weak sauce console box.
@Source Dasher It's a bit of a truism that many of the features you're talking about won't be mainstream because they've largely been considered enthusiast features for pc gamers. I had full hairworks enabled on wild hunt or TR. I had the cool physx stuff enabled in arkham city/arkham knight. Nonetheless, NVIDIA's brazen pricing with this generation is disgusting. the price points largely remained static, taking inflation into account.
Starting the video with Crysis was a great idea. When it released in 2007 people were angry at how demanding it was but five years later all those techniques became standard in AAA games. Similarly raytracing may not be in the best shape now and the hardware required for it may be insane but someone had to give it a start. And look, even next gen consoles are going to adopt raytracing. Hopefully in next 5 years it will become a standard too.
I think this is potentially Alex's best video to date! This was incredible; you can really see the time and effort he put into making this deep dive. This video truly is the *FULL FAT* experience.
4 years later i'm playing this on a Radeon card with everything RT up to max with a couple of (recommended) nip and tucks at 1440p upscaled to 4k and getting 60+ FPS in the Corridor of Doom.

I'd like to point out, that I average mid 80's FPS, dips to mid 60's, with a 5820k @ 4.7 and a RTX 2060 Super at 2.1. I didn't buy RTX for ray tracing, I bought it because I needed an upgrade and I wanted the built in encoder and other specific driver features (I nearly bought a 5700XT, but it was out of stock). I got a key for CONTROL for free and finally installed it yesterday. First of all I was pretty much shocked at how good the game was, not to mention how it looked. Options mostly maxed out, and all the ray tracing options on but the last one, and it runs great and looks incredible. I guess I hadn't really thought much about RT before, I genuinely didn't care. As of this moment, I care, deeply. This game looks f'in incredible, and not just reflections and shadows; the lighting is so damn good, I didn't know a game could look so good. I cannot unsee it, I'm hooked.
HypnoticSuggestion I get about 30 frames per second with everything maxed out with my 2060. Then when I activate DLSS I get about 60 FPS more or less locked. @ 2560x1080
@@SydneyButler if it supports gamefilters trough geforce experience, try using the sharpening filter @900p. What i hear it has better visual quality compared to DLSS and even comes at a lower performane cost.
This is possibly one of the best covers of Digital Foundry ever. Just the first minutes blew me away. I can't imagine the amount of work behind this kind of videos. I can only say you did an incredible job, as always!!
@@chigga25 All RT features on at 1080p + DLSS. Not 100% 60 fps, but damn close. Stutter is a thing as mentioned in the video, but you can get used to that after a while.

If you have a compatible gsync, freesync monitor you dont even notice the drops to 55. Best experience in graphics, performance imo for vanilla 2060 owners. But you can max out the raytracing and the game if you turn dlss on, but it looks blurry and have jagged lines even at 720p upscaled, to diminishing that you want to use nvidia sharpening tool at 25 to 50%. It looks way better, but the jaggy remain and is still noticeable when moving fast the camera with dlss.
As someone who's played a lot of Control, I giggle at your use of white text with the little booming sound effect every time you introduce a new graphical effect like when Control introduces a new area. Please keep these cute little details coming.
Played through the game on i9 9900k (4,7 GHz stock) with RTX2060Super and 3000 Mhz memory. With everything maxed out and DLSS ON (720p rendering resolution for 1080p display) it ran silky smooth with no stutters 60 fps locked. Maybe a few dips to mid 50-th during huge battles, but it was great experience. Without DLSS, game ran at 35-50 fps in 1080p.
Got a similar experience on my lightly overclocked mobile 2060. I can live with the resolution downgrade thanks to DLSS. The lighting in this game is just too big a part of its atmosphere to not take advantage of RTX in some form if you have the option. I had to get picky about which RTX settings to turn on in order to stay above 60fps 99% of the time, but it was worth it.
Max S Why in the world would you invest so much money on one of the best CPU’s around but go for a lower end GPU? Just...why??? The reverse would’ve been more beneficial for games honestly.
@@Mr.Honest247 Um, because It's my wife's workbench. She works with graphics, editing and design. She doesn't play games often. We've upgraded the GPU from GTX770 to RTX2060S just to have a modern multi monitor(UHD) solution. So yeah, it's not actually a gaming PC.
I got this for Xbox One X and while it does look nice, it's definitely nothing compared to the PC version. I kind of want to get the PC version as well but idk how well RTX 2060 (not super) will run this game with all ray tracing effects on. Coming from the console version though, I don't mind 30 fps if that's the cost of running at ultra settings with RT on

I know it's been said a few times already, but I think it has to be said again: this is a tremendously well done video. Not that it is something surprising on this channel, but still.
Absolutely stellar work on this video! I can't wait until Ray Tracing hardware makes it into more affordable GPUs which can also always deliver 60 fps with all RT options turned on. Thank you Alex for this glimpse into the future!
It's sad that it took this long for a well executed DXR game to show up. I'm really tempted to pick an RTX 2080 Ti now for this (and Minecraft of all things) but at the same time know that NVIDIA would be revising the hardware sometime next year, which would most definitely be able to push higher frame rates at a slightly higher resolution.
Hey, what about Metro Exodus? That had a pretty solid RT implementation. But for future RT support, we might have that in AMD's RDNA2 or Intel's Xe GPUs coming up.
Awesome video as always! Just want to point out that at the 14 minute mark, the captions of Ray Traced Debris are flip flopped. The left image is the one that actually has Ray Traced Debris. Keep up the good work!

Amazing video. Fantastic in detail explanation of the evolution of graphics and raytracing technology. Also, love the ominous sound effects for tech presentation xD
This is legitimately one of the best videos you guys have made. Even if you don't factor in the RTX stuff, it still describes and shows off how graphics settings from current and past make a difference. Seriously, major props to you guys. The video is structured so incredibly well.
This game have beautiful architecture environment & lighting implementation, but it kinda get stale after awhile (especially being a metroidvania-ish) with most of it a concrete & industrial environments, while "trippy" environments are mostly black onyx-ish concretes with platform level Aassassin's Creed animus levels LOL
I love the amount of knowledge shoved into this video in a slow-paced, easy to understand manner. This is definitely going to be a video I use to help explain things to my non tech-savvy friends. Aside from that, the crazy thing is, this game looks brilliant on my PS4 Pro, I cannot even believe how insane it looks on PC.
I’m glad you said something about being able to continue using SSAO even when indirect diffuse is active! I noticed that the GI seemed to basically be a more accurate version of AO based on world space instead of screen space plus some light color diffusion from other surfaces. I wondered if there was any reason to leave SSAO enabled when using it, so thanks for clearing that up.
I’ve been a PC/game tech enthusiast since the original Quake and this feels like the first truly transformative leap I’ve seen in an actual shipped game since Crysis. It’s all fine detail work at this point but this video perfectly illustrates what a bunch of those missing details that make a scene look “game-y” are and why raytracing is the next step to filling them in. I didn’t believe we’d get a good in game representation of its potential this generation but I was wrong! Bravo 👏
Nice use of the Control-style text appearing with accompanying sound fx. Loved that. Great description of Ray Tracing fx, too. Thing is, I wish you'd discuss the 4k image quality of this game because it looks like Remedy's 4k image isn't 4k at all, but similar to Xbox One X's 1440p upscaled tech. When I set 4k, I want 4k. I also wish that Ray Tracing's introduction into the Geforce line had waited until a die shrink so that they could have gotten 4k baseline done and THEN moved the needle.
Really good deep dive into graphic settings and in their meaning. Liked the most the honesty of the video. Was sold(finally) on the RT effects, all it was needed was a honest look and detailed explanation on RT effects based on a good example- Control the game. Control really could be the best showcase of RT ON till now. Thanks a lot for the hard work.
Yeah, unlike Alex I think native resolution is a loooooooot bigger deal than ray tracing. The RT effects look nice but nowhere near nice enough to play at a processed and soft looking half resolution. Will be cool to experience in a replay someday.
Control is now also available with Nvidia Game Filters. Selecting the "Sharpen" filter the game looks astonishing with all RTX effects enable. Would be nice if Digital Foundry could make a video explaining the different filters available and the performance impact on games. Love you guys, the best game/tech channel in the world.

@jvalex18 correct but it "upscales" to you're native panel. If you have a 4k panel it will try and emulate that. I'm not lying to you. 3440x1440 is less work for the GPU than 3840x2160 hence why I get more frames. At 4k with dlss yes he will get dips below 60. At 3440x1440 which is LESS than his resolution I dont.
That's a great video! I have an idea. Whenever you compare image with and without some effect, you could draw the subtitle in red when the effect is off and in green when it's on. Then it would be easier to grasp quickly without having to look for the word "NO" in the text.
Amazing video, as usual. Anyone that still doesn't completely understand how RT effects and techniques work, should watch these videos, it's quite...enlightening :P It's also amazing how much developers have learned about Nvidia's RTX, and now games do have a lot more granularity when it comes to fine tuning settings for RT effects, giving the users the choice to have greater FPS if needed. This paves the way to a great future not just for PC, but also for future consoles, which we know will have the capabilities to do some form of RT as well. The more the developers learn today about all of this, the better for future games and systems. In the end is not about which system is better or not, it's all about progress, and giving developers better tools to do their jobs and project their creative vision on the work they do for these games.

17:40 19 months later and the DX12 stutter still isn't fixed. Great job, Remedy! And this video failed to mention the other glaring bug that remains unpatched to this day: the messed up texture streaming. 5 minutes into the game and you can clearly see it in the paintings hanging on the walls. Did Remedy borrow Bethesda's QA team or something?
People keep mentioning the stutter with DX12 but I haven’t seen any yet, I’m about 5 hours in now playing on a strix 2080ti ,i7 8700k at 5ghz, Maybe it’s because I’m using g-sync. Also the Game is very playable even at 4K dlss from 1440p, averages around 50fps max settings with the worst drops into the high 30s, but with the g-sync on it still stays nice & smooth.
Same here, beginning to think it's either storage related or a ryzen issue (everyone I've heard complain about stutter has been using ryzen, but could just be a coincidence).
Great video. As someone who is playing this game on PC with a RTX 2080Ti, I must say it looks friggin awesome in 4k (1440p dlss) with Ray tracing on. Ray tracing is a real game changer when implemented well.

It would really depend on how long it's been sitting there, and environmental factors like temperature in the room. It's def an artistic choice to emphasis it's reflectivity for more than a small period of time... however, I really wanna say that I appreciate the AMOUNT of blood on the ground in some places... People are constantly underestimating how much blood will be on the floor when someone exsanguinates.
blood also wouldn't move out that far from the body naturally if he was say just stabbed or shot. this is one of those dramatic effects added to movies and Games. its there for artistic entertainment and emphasis. there lots of that, like how characters walk like 20 mph, or how ur hands would not naturally be in you FOV unless u held them out or up to the height of your shoulders, and thats just not how people move about when untasked. i did a little bit of game development as a hobby,( would not recommend, theses things standout afterwards. also how crazy tall allot of living spaces are in games (or how short people are) most people don't have 30/40foot ceilings in their bathrooms.
I think this was your best video yet. Ray tracing is so useful in rendering realistic lighting. The next step in 3d software is advanced ambient particle effects, so that ray tracing can be better demonstrated and to add warmth and well, atmosphere to scenes. The air is a soup of particles and there are even subatomic particles that effect how light moves. Otherwise look to the work of Monet and Manet and Seurat for how colours combine with each other to create new wavelengths.
The problem is pre baked lighting in linear games can produce image quality very comparable to ray tracing without the performance penalty. An artist can do a lot of very old effects in combination that do not require the level of real time computation ray tracing requires.
But that only works in static environment (which Control obviously doesn't have) thus limiting the game design by forcing the level to become more "static". So less freedom in level and game design, also more work put into faking things to look correct. Those are what real-time ray tracing is trying to solve.
Adding all these effects step by step made me realize how far we have come in terms of realism in video games. Fascinating video, and very well explained.
Seeing the old government 50s style buildings, paneling, and objects all remind me of Fallout 4. Sad part being: at certain points, the effects and level of 3d geometry is on par with Fallout 4 - but when you turn on all effects, it just brings so much realism and life into the environment. Seriously, its crazy. It oes to show that using a proper game engine with the latest effect can really breath life into your worldspace and its assets.
If I had a 2060 this is a game I would gladly play at like 720p just to get those RT effects Such a huge step up in rendering quality going from fake-ish to quite realistic looking light

The game looks like those target concept art drawings that you know are unattainable until now.

HDR can make dark settings look bland it's better used with super colorful vibrant games.
@Source Dasher
It's a bit of a truism that many of the features you're talking about won't be mainstream because they've largely been considered enthusiast features for pc gamers.
This. 100% this. RT has to start somewhere

With DLSS on, so low textures but why. XD

Bravo 👏
Amazing video. DF are simply the best!! Oh and Control looks superb.
One of the best videos on RTX i've seen. Almost got me a little mad that I don't have an RTX card.
I appreciate the effects, but not at the resolution hit. In a couple more years, this’ll be amazing.

Agree.
Love the creepy/dramatic vibe of the video. Almost "scary" how realistic the game starts to look the more RT effects are added!
Yes I totally agree.

It would really depend on how long it's been sitting there, and environmental factors like temperature in the room.
26:04 Exactly! And this is something these newschool PC plebs don't understand!

The game runs at 70+ fps with my 3080 at 1440P (DLSS) with everything including RT maxed out. Pretty nice
Just think in 5 yrs or less we could actually play RT games without turning off half the settings.
Alex, the production quality of your videos are leagues ahead of anything I've seen on youtube!
If I had a 2060 this is a game I would gladly play at like 720p just to get those RT effects
Such a huge step up in rendering quality going from fake-ish to quite realistic looking light
I don't think I'll be playing this game, but I really enjoyed this 27 minute long video haha, awesome how amazingly has videogame tech evolved
