  • NOTE: This video was made pre-Alola League.
Ash Ketchum is notorious for losing every #Pokemon League he's ever participated in and is generally considered to be a bad trainer, but to me, that's just some bandwagon normie opinion that nobody bothers to challenge, so today, I'll be coming to the defense of Ash Ketchum and rationalizing his L's.

One thing you missed? In Japanese the gym leaders and Elite 4 are called "Pokemon masters." So Ash becoming a master is likely that, him growing up, settling down, and becoming a gym leader, or a member of the elite 4.

Ash has the potential to win every league without any resistance tbh.
Pikachu, Sceptile, Charizard, Greninja, Krookodile and Infernape/Snorlax.
He can literally sweep the leagues.
The writers just don't want him to do it.
Anyway you made a lot of good points, and I agree with most.

    • @MattCMG
      @MattCMG  5 лет назад +94

That's the thing. Ash KNOWS he can just use his reserves at any time, but he chooses not to because 1) he likes challenging himself and 2) he wants to win with his new Pokemon. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall during one of the Leagues someone asked why Ash is sticking with his current team and not using his old Pokemon and he said something along the lines of "I want to win HERE with the friends I've made HERE".
You're partially right in saying that the writers don't want him to sweep or win. Obviously he's gotta continue on his journey. I'm sure the writers (and the fans) would LOVE to bring back Charizard or any of his other Pokemon for Pokemon Leagues, but in doing so they diminish a lot of the development of his current team. What would be the point of Ash training up a whole new team for a League but then sweeping the whole thing with Charizard, Snorlax, and Sceptile? It'd be great fan-service but horrible writing. The writers are kinda damned if they do damned if they don't in this situation, because fans would totally love to see Ash bring his old Pokemon back, but in doing so they would write themselves into a corner with his new Pokemon and they wouldn't get their time to truly shine.

ASH WON THE ALOLA LEAGUE, GUYS. Y'ALL CAN CALM DOWN NOW.
However, that does not make anything I said in either this video or *part* *2* (which you should totally watch if you haven't already) invalid. It's too little too late. This video explains why ash's losses make sense in the context of the show. I believe the context and structure of the show are the problem. It needed a complete overhaul and Johto was the saga it should've happened in. If Ash losing Johto made sense based on how the show went then the show needed to change. Him, Misty, Brock...Johto should've been the culmination of Ash's journey and not take decades to get us there with Alola. Ain't nobody got time for 20 years of Pokemon anime just for one league victory.

You forgot the argument of Ash releasing all his best Pokémon. They willingly forget that Ash does this because he recognizes that this makes them happy.
The Pokémon in the anime are established to have their own dreams, desires and preferences. They're living breathing beings. It is the very reason why Ash and Dawn traded Aipom and Buizel in the first place, because they preferred the other trainer's career.
On several occasions, the characters outright ask the Pokémon if they want to stay or leave.

For as much as Ash gets mocked for them, his constant league losses are way *more* *realistic* than the fanbase's *expectations* of him scoring wins. Qualifying into a regional league is already very difficult, making a deep run such as Ash consistently does even more so. Actually winning is beyond extraordinary, and even for the winners, there is always someone better in the form of the Elite Four and the Champion.
When Ash's league results are actually brought up by other characters in the series, it's usually to draw attention to how *good* a trainer Ash is. Consistently placing as high as Ash does at national tournaments is exceptional, even if he's not as well known as the winners.
Relatedly, when at the end of the Alola arc Ash actually *wins* the league, does he immediately start screaming, celebrating and making a ruckus? Nope, he stands there in *complete* shock, a completely bewildered look on his face while he processes the fact he actually did it.

I have to disagree with you in the Snivy vs Pikachu bit. While I do agree that Pikachu may have been under powered by Zekrom, you forgot the fact that the anime doesn't forget type advantages and disadvantages. So, regardless of whether Pikachu's Electric Type moves work or not, Pikachu still had access to Quick Attack and Iron Tail, two moves that are more effective than Thunderbolt and Volt Tackle are. The only way around this is if the creators made it clear that Pikachu's physical attacks were weakened, too. But, sorry, dude, I can't really see it as any other way than the writers clearly dropped the ball, because that's not what they did. I don't necessarily blame Ash's skills as a Trainer for that loss, after all he made some good calls, only not getting Pikachu to dodge at the end as an oopsie moment.
On top of that, consider the fact that, unless Sceptile's Leaf Blade actually damaged Latios, Pikachu was the only one to cause damage to Latios. This means that Pikachu had a really had time fighting Latios, because he could still keep going, and also keep in mind this is a guy who swept teams with just his Darkrai. This was the first and only time in the league that he had to bring out Latios. Oh, and remember when Pikachu won against Regice? Did any of his Pokemon face that one before Pikachu? At least the next loss against Electivire made sense. Pikachu really didn't have a good track record with the Electabuzz line.
Look, I get what you're trying to say, but you can't say that people are willfully ignoring facts when you have no proof, just because you noticed something and they didn't. Cause these are things you clearly didn't noticed or chose not to acknowledge.
Not really gonna touch on anything else. I think they could've let Ash face Diantha, or at least beat Alain one time before the league, but everyone's saying that, so you get the point. You seem like a swell dude, but it kind of sounded like you were putting words in people's mouths.

The end of the battle with Snivy, as you point out, was Ash's only real "oopsie". He handled things pretty well for the most part and was caught off guard when Pikachu's electric moves didn't work. He couldn't overcome the initial confusion quick enough (he's a little slow, as we know haha) to react to Leaf Tornado.
I think I responded to someone else's comment regarding Regice, and can't remember what I said, but I did acknowledge it, just not in the video. Legendary Pokemon are weird, because sometimes they are treated as truly legendary/unbeatable (like the creation trio, tao trio, Ho-oh, pretty much any box legendaries) while some of the lesser legendaries (like Regice, Latios, Zeraora, Meltan) are treated as just rare Pokemon instead of legendaries.
The Electabuzz line is a good point, and that kind of inconsistency in Pikachu's power is nothing else but faulty writing. I'll certainly concede to that (the anime was never really the epitome of "good writing" to begin with). Simply put, Pikachu is as powerful as the writers need him to be in a given moment. Sometimes he's taking out Regice, others he's losing to Snivy. I believe the intellectual term is "it be like that sometimes".

@@MattCMG Exactly. I know what you mean. It's not necessarily a "Oh Ash is such a bad Trainer!" moment. Or, at least, it shouldn't be. This didn't showcase Ash as a bad Trainer in the least bit. But what it did do was try to make an excuse for Pikachu to lose to a brand new Snivy, and I'm sorry, but no matter what the excuse, it's hard to swallow that after everything Pikachu's been through, that a young Snivy like that can beat him so easily.
Trip himself has always been a bit of a discount Paul to me. He sort of just shows up, does his shtick, and then disappears. No one ever hears, or cares about him again. They really should've waited a bit to capitalize on the greatness that was Paul as a rival. I mean, Trip didn't bring anything new or interesting to the table. Easily the least of all of Ash's rivals.
But I can see your defense of Ash as a Trainer. Honestly, I think people are too hard on him. I understood why, but I never liked it when Misty did it, and I HATED Iris for it. Ash, if nothing else, cares for his Pokemon and is trying his best to make them the best they can be. I honestly think that not evolving may only be a portion of what is slowing him down from reaching his goal. If you really think about it, he's also helping his Pokemon achieve their dreams, too.
Think about it: Butterfree goes to be with the one it loves, Charizard competed with other Charizards to become the best it can be, even Bulbasaur's and Pikachu's refusal to evolve is in a way a dream: they're trying to prove they can be the best without necessarily evolving. Trying to be the best Pikachu and Bulbasaur there are. I could go on and on, but this really shows the type of Trainer Ash is: he embraces the differences of his Pokemon.
Is he perfect? No. But, frankly, he's not offensive, and he's certainly not a bad Trainer. Not anymore anyway. Honestly, Pikachu's the one that's kind of starting to annoy me, and that's more because the writers are just afraid to give him any sort of character aside from "He likes ketchup and he's cute!" Ash, though? At least he's got some kind of personality. Maybe not as much as he used to, but there's still some in there.
Remember when Pikachu was a wimpy little coward? Yeah. Good times... wonder why no one talks about that anymore?
Anyways, thanks for the response! Honestly didn't expect is so quick.

About Pikachu having a character. It's been shown multiple times that Pikachu is a lot like Ash. The both of them having a competitive spirit, both of them are very companionate and go out of their way to help people, and they're both stubborn.
Pikachu from my POV seems to be the more mature and responsible of the two and Pikachu is quick to anger when challenged by someone. Having an inability to back down whenever picked on. The little mouse of course does their best to stay reasonable and calm but they have their limits, especially when its their friends who're targeted. They're also a little shy around those who are affectionate around them and doesn't know how to react most of the time.
Pikachu has also been shown to be a good leader and supporter in varies pokémon shorts and interactions with other pokémon. They're also a great caretaker of young pokémon, best shown with their actions around Misty's Togepi. Just like Ash, Pikachu also have their more "whoops" moments from time to time.
So overall, Pikachu is WAY more than just "cute and loves ketchup."

@@golork3267 That's fair, but notice that the anime doesn't really like to delve into any of Pikachu's flaws. It honestly feels like he doesn't really have any. Sure, Pikachu makes mistakes, but Pikachu seems to be the one who determines what the anime wants the audience to perceive as right or wrong.
On top of that, whenever Pikachu does do something perceived as "wrong" when another Pokemon did it, all the characters have to suddenly change their minds when Pikachu does it, suddenly switching sides.
Example? Piplup was making fun of Mamoswine, and Dawn scolded him for it. Pikachu (albeit trying to hold himself back) does the exact same thing, and suddenly Mamoswine's wrong for being mad.
Now, I get it. In that case, Mamoswine is the bigger Pokemon. Of course Dawn would come to their aid, but you see where I'm getting at? They're afraid of making Pikachu in the wrong. And this has been a thing with the anime from the start, though at least then Pikachu was an adorable little coward with a bit of attitude.
Although that is some character, you can't tell me there's a surplus there, can you? Notice how there only seems to be one flaw with Pikachu's character, and even then, it always seems to be anyone else's fault it occurs but Pikachu's. That's what I'm getting at. Pikachu's character, at the very least, is nothing special. He's just a blank canvas for the audience to paint their perfect Pokemon partner over. Nothing more.

The context is irrelevant to the fact that the tonal inconsistancies and lack of continuity when it comes to Ash's competance as a trainer make the Pokemon Anime unbearable to watch for a lot of people. What use is investing in a character if their arc completely resets with each season?
This is made more aggregious by the fact that despite how certain seasons are meant to be 'soft reboots', in mentions of Ash's origins, the Anime and Ash himself explicitly still say he's from Pallet Town. The show wants to keep the continuity that he's been on all of these adventures throughout every region starting from Pallet Town, and yet continually loses that experience every time he goes to a new region.
Also, your criticism of people who complain about how "A Pokemon's level should be X, why are they losing" kind of misses the point of the complaint. It's not that people want or expect there to be written levels in the Anime for each Pokemon (though that could create an interesting plot element where a Pokemon can be listed as a lower level than the opponent but still come out with the win through being more skilled, ex. Dragon Ball Z), it's the need for consistency.
What the fuck is the use of rules in the show when characters are constantly breaking those rules? Pikachu electrocuting Swellow to give him "Armor", or Hawlucha breaking Trick Room with an X Scissor are things that piss people off because they are not consistent with the logic of the games OR the show. Pokemon's Magic system is fucking meaningless in the Anime.

    • @kingced741
      @kingced741 5 лет назад +19

My guy half of his point is that the pokemon anime's magic system is different than the the game's power system.
The anime's magic system is literally like a shonen series unlike the games were you choose everything your pokemon can become or do becuase to us the pokemon has no personality it's a literal blank slate with no will on its own and usually a set path to follow once they are captured by us.
This changes in the anime were the pokemon are living breathing creatures that are clearly sintiant life. So it become different we see how the moves are set up like for instance trick room is clearly nothing but a box of physic energy so it naturally can be broken like any other box move in shonen either way x-sissor is a bug type move so there is still consistency. Another thing is as Ash's hawlucua has enough raw physical strength to over power a machamp so a pokemon with powerful physical strength could probably break light screen or something similar
On a real note though if what I was trying to say wasn't clear, that if a pokemon has enough attack or special attack power and if there move has a type advantage against another then there is a higher chance that one pokemon will break or overwhelm the other. another thing that may play into this is the actual battle experience (not exp) as often when fighting the more experienced fighter usslay wins or at least makes the fight closer when dealing with a super newbie who is just extremely powerful.(I'm sure you get the point) As the more experienced trainer will know the right calls or moves to deal with a a wider array of situations and the pokemon itself will know when and where to dodge and the places to hit for the most damage.
This isn't a factor in the games however as they do need to keep their simple turn based battle system with only complex part being the stats and maybe type effectiveness.
Thunder armor and ice aqua are one and the same they are moves coted with another move effectively making on a double typed move and the other an electric typed move. Ice aqua jet is easier to explain as it's just a frozen aqua jet we know combination attacks exist so this is easier. thunder armor however is maybe the move swallow was using at the time coted with thunder bolt making it bassicly a volt tackle but that reason is weak tbh.

Look I’m not ignoring that at the time Pikachu wasn’t at its best. But that battle felt like an equivalent of you’re trying to hurt someone with a nail clipper. The writers were more than capable enough to make Pikachu losing felt less force? Less bs? Like Paul vs Ash first battle had lvl. 100000 Pikachu fought an Eleckid. Pikachu should have had EZ win, but it was a draw. Still, it was a decent fight and also helped showcasing Paul as a strong rival. Not to mention unlike Snivy, Eleckid had some battle experience which is why nobody ever really make fun of it. The battle felt more justified and more satisfied.

Personally I disagree with the whole cake with glass metafor. The way I see it being a fan of ash, which I am, is like being a fan of Goku, you don't watch the character for the end resault, you watch to see how they'll try to improve and there all-round contributes to the series.
Saying that you watch the Pokemon TV series to see ash win a league is like saying you dragon Ball to find out weather or not Goku will be able to defeat the bad guy, everyone who has payed attention to dragon Ball should know by now that no matter what happens even if he loses some battles Goku will win the war, it's not a mystery it's a suspense, it's part of the show, by watching for that you miss the whole point of Goku's character, a friendly if not childish guy who seeks improvement and by virtue of his attitude inspires others to improve.
Like ash, to me it has gotten more obvious as the series went on that Ash's goal to become a Pokemon master....isn't number 1 priority, yeah he wants to get strong but his actions show that he cares much more about experienceing new experiences and writing wrongs, ash is an adventure junkie who really likes helping people. If anything I'd beleave ash at this point is useing his goal of becomeing a Pokemon master as a mean of not growing stagnate, to broaden his horizens so that he may find more adventure and help other people broaden there's.
Being a fan of ash ketchum isn't einstein's definition of insanity, the insanity comes from thoes who look just at the league matches and no more into him, being a fan of ash is finding that adventures spirit, encouraging attitude and desire to keep trying admirable, a Pokemon master is a legand, ash is a hero, legends never die, like a shining statue frozen in time, heroes other the hand always rises like the sun and really Wich is more beautiful, a singal monument or the tales of a hero who effects on the can be seen?

So I've carefully analyzed your defense for Ash and I must say that I agree with a lot of what you said about Ash that was good. I will say that a lot of what you said about the Black and White Ash, I don't agree with. Now, before I start, let me point out that I am a huge BW hater, but even then, I tried as hard as I can to not make my analysis biased against the BW series.
First off, (Pikachu vs Latios) vs (Pikachu vs Snivy)
I can understand where you're coming from with your argument about Pikachu and Latios. The power difference was obvious. Latios easily overpowered Pikachu despite Pikachu winning. As for Pikachu and Snivy, Pikachu being under-powered due to not being able to have access to his signature Electric attacks and Trip being a competent beginner trainer are only valid excuses and nothing more. I say valid because Ash's Pikachu did have a handicap placed against him. Now if we take a look at Ash vs Cress's Gym battle, we can clearly see that there was absolutely NO HANDICAP against Pikachu. It was a fair battle against a water-type Panpour and Pikachu lost miserably. Now there are no excuses that Ash/Pikachu defenders can hide behind. Pikachu lost to a Panpour because the BW writers made Ash and poor Pikachu look like hot piles of GARBAGE!
Now, let's go to the Unova League.
The biggest disappointment of the Unova League that almost every Pokemon fan, both BW haters and non-haters alike, can agree on is the fact that Ash failed in the most humiliating way ever! He lost to a brainless idiot! While I will admit that Ash's Pokemon in Unova were mostly pathetic due to it being under-trained and in rotation, at least Ash, despite being worse than he was when he first started, had enough brains at this point to logically win the battle against idiotic Cameron. It was two idiots pitted against each other and Ash was clearly the "smarter" idiot. Yes I do agree that dumb luck with evolving Riolu was a key factor in Cameron's victory, but that was just another way of how the writers trashed an already shamed Ash. Surely the writers could cut Ash a break but no. They had to humiliate him more by making Ash lose to an opponent who would brainlessly send Pokemon out with obvious disadvantages resulting in predictable KOs in Ash's favor and the fact that he thought full battles were 5 on 5. Even an idiotic Ash should've easily creamed that guy! Therefore, saying that Ash was on a slump during the BW is false because the writers for BW made Ash unbearable to watch most of the time.
If none of this made sense to anyone, at least understand the point of my arguments. The BW series is clearly NOT a slump series! The writers, on purpose or not, trashed Ash and stripped away all of his respect as a trainer that he had gained throughout his travels by making him look more like an idiot than when he first started. I could be completely wrong, but after watching this video, it's clear that you're not a BW hater, but at the same time, you don't seem to like it either. It would be nice if you could one day analyze the BW series in comparison to every other series made to this point. Maybe that would appease all the fans both the BW haters and the non-haters.

I address the Latios thing in part 2, so give that a watch when it comes out. A lot of it has to do with how inconsistent Pikachu 's power is in the series.
As for the Unova League, I somewhat disagree. Just because Cameron was a goofball doesn't mean he wasn't good at battling. Ash has always been a goofball like that too (albeit it to a lesser extent), and hes' made it pretty far in every regional tournament he's been in. Cameron obviously had to have some skill to get to where he is. The dude had a fucking Hydreigon, and that doesn't happen by accident. Nowhere does he demonstrate that he's inept, he's just misinformed on a lot of things.
I'm not saying BW *wasn't* bad (I also address this in part 2), as there were many many episodes that I couldn't stand because of how poorly they were written, but I think people severely overblow Ash's stupidity. He's way dumber than he was before don't get me wrong, but he's not as dumb as the BW haters make him out to be. I bet that if there were a clear transition from DP to BW then people would be slightly more accepting of Ash, but there wasn't, so we gotta deal with what we were given.

That Panpour did have mud sport, which weakens electric attacks, and the anime upped it into a move that broke Pikachu's momentum. Plus, gym leaders are strong and skilled trainers who know how to counter weaknesses.

I agree, I think Ash's progress as a trainer had been natural, maybe except for being in Unova which I agree can be chalked up as having a "bad season". He's probably one of the more realistic shonen anime characters out there, not needing to win a tournament in order to "save the world" which seems to be a pitfall for many of others. He isn't the best trainer out there, but that's why he's relatable. He just an ordinary Joe, who somehow gets himself into extraordinary situations. He however cares for his Pokemon so much and supports them win or lose. I will agree that the ways he loses these leagues are a bit off, having to introduce new characters with no buildup. That's why Alain was special, because he at least had his own miniseries to see his journey. I see Ash as probably one of the most realistic "sportsmen" in animation and it's like a reality show where the cast doesn't always have a happy ending.
That being said, I disagree that he necessarily have to lose in order for the anime to continue. I'll make a bold prediction -- he'll beat Guzma in the finals and lose to Royal Mask in the exhibition, with maybe Guzma unleashing an Ultra Beast that will have the Ultra Guardians do their final mission (maybe even have Dia return, maybe with Mohn being trapped in the Ultra Ruins with him and all that). As you said, his story arcs don't typically end when he loses in the league. Beating Gary, Paul and losing to Alain were closures, with him losing in the next match being a prequel to the next region. His story has been mostly connected with the Pokemon School and especially Kukui, so it makes so much sense to end his Alola arc by competing against him.
Him facing Royal Mask/Kukui in the exhibition could be a teaser to having a Champions League be possible in the future. Have Royal Mask be like an Elite Four member, with Ash just losing in the first hurdle. Even if he wins the league, him losing the next match immediately after shows a definitive statement that winning just 1 league doesn't make you a Pokemon Master. Also, him winning may be a good reason for the next series, where trainers apparently have sponsors, so what better to sponsor but the first champion of a region? Maybe have Leon be a companion and be Ash's mentor as a more experienced champion. Be "Gloria" be the one trying to get badges this time (or even join Ash in collecting them), kinda have Ash be a mentor like how he did with May. If people feel winning the Alola League is cheap then maybe winning the Galar League may prove he isn't a "one league wonder".
That beings said you could also make him lose after he wins a league. Just because you win one, doesn't mean you'll win the next. Have him lose semifinals in Gen 9 as a shock, having to face the toughest competitor in the draw. Same with Gen 10, maybe have him lose in the final this time. I doubt Ash would care as long as he felt he did his best on them. Then come Gen 11, BAM, have him win the league again and have him face the Elite Four and make him to lose to the Champion. Gen 12 may be the best time to end the anime IMO, and have him finally beat the Champion too. Then have a miniarc after that where Ash does have to do something in order to save the world, something that finally connects him to Ho-Oh, meet his previous companions, and maybe see Arceus or something.

Holy shit, an intelligent comment for once!
In regards to the Alola League, from what we've seen so far its looking like you might be right. Ash might actually win this one, but he won't be the champion because he'll lose to the Masked Royale.
I agree that there's ways for him to win leagues and still continue traveling, but in terms of the actual narrative of the show, they can't have him win one league then lose horribly the next. He has to get consistently better (which is why him doing worse in the Unova League pissed so many people off) in order for the story and his whole arc to make sense. If he were to win, say, the Galar League and face off against the elite 4, then he'd have to lose to them at some point, which is why I'm predicting that from the Alola League onwards, there's gonna continue to be some kind of twist for the Pokemon Leagues that will prevent Ash from becoming the champion, while still allowing him to win leagues.

The Galar anime will be all about Gyms and Leagues, so it makes sense for him to win this one, to be ready for then Galar comes. Maybe Alola sponsors him with their new League or something. And who knows what's up with Leon, maybe he cheated or something.

I like it but I do feel like there is a gap where battle experience means something in the world of pokemon as a bridge for levels in the game.
It is well known a pokemon straight out of an egg cannot battle due to a weak body which implies the growth of ones body.
This is further shown in a number of episodes throughout the series with some pokemon being bigger or just having particularly high 'stats'.
In all of the travels that ash has had he has always kept pikachu who should be his most experienced and grown pokemon. I do not think that pikachu should be an unstoppable juggernaut but it seems clear to me that he should be much stronger than what is shown.
Lots of people nitpick pokemon and then blow up problems to be far too big.
I like to think I am not alone in the thoughts that even if pikachu isn't some max level crazy beast, that he should at least be the example of a truly exceptional pikachu.
Even early on it is noted that ash's pikachu is stronger than the normal so think of it as natural max special attack ivs or in other words strong genetics.
If you take both of these together than you paint a picture of a pikachu that should be much stronger but not to the point of winning everything and you know that ash as a trainer wouldn't rely on pikachu in that way unless he had no choice because he wants to be a pokemon master and thus needs to train his other pokemon when he gets the chance.
Personally I feel they could buff pikachu a fair bit and still keep pokemon as a decent show because of the character that ash has.
It would be so satisfying to see ash use pikachu as a kind of way to show what can happen when you really work at training a pokemon from the ground up.

The Alola league is definitely an interesting topic. Alola is not a battle focused region. Most people don't have more than a single pokemon or two, with the only person to have a full team is Lusamine. And with it being an open invite, only 151 people joined. A lot of people have complained about this, but I don't feel like it's a problem. It makes sense when you look at Alola as a whole for it to have to be open invite in order to gain attention for the league. It's definitely the league I want Ash to win in, but at the same time, I'm ok and expecting that he won't. I don't know.

Just because Ash hasn't won a league yet doesn't make him a bad trainer. Coming in the top 16 in Kanto was quite an achievement for his first try. I think this is another point where people correlate with the games too much. Not everybody is going to win a league. That's just the truth. Think of it like the Olympics. There are plenty of athletes competing who don't win a gold medal throughout their whole career. Does that make them a bad athlete? Of course not. Just participating is absolute proof of their abilities. I believe the same can be said for Pokemon. Not every trainer will reach the Pokemon league in a world like the Pokemon anime and to get to the Pokemon league shows that Ash is one of the best.
As for the levels, I agree that they just don't exist in the anime. Yes it was mentioned in an early episode but lots of other things have been seen and mentioned in early episodes which have never been mentioned since. Take real world animals for example. They were referenced in some early episodes but have never been mentioned since. Or Ash using thunderbolt on a Rhydon's horn. The continuity of the anime series is a mess especially when it come to the Indigo League series.

The pokemon league almost certainly has a way to regulate and change a pokemon's level, and it would make perfect sense for Ash to set pikachu back down to level 5 for every new region, to be on the right power level for it and get better as a trainer, not necessarily have the pokemon be so good in comparison that he never gets any better.
Also, for the levels thing, there have been things that were retconned, like those real-world animals. Those were officially retconned, we've never heard about the levels since, so while the levels might be gone, they very likely aren't because they haven't been officially retconned.

@@terryhines2847 Seeing as the video was referring to trainers just ordering their Pokemon to evolving and Sabrina didn't issue any verbal orders to her Abra, it would only count if Sabrina was using telepathy to give Abra the order without the audience hearing it. Any other usage of Sabrina's psychic powers to get her Abra to evolve wouldn't count as order, which was what was being referred to by the question. While that might be used as evidence that a trainer could force their Pokemon to evolve if they had psychic powers, this video is about defending Ash; so they aren't really relevant and should only be brought up if you want to nitpick.
Also on the topic of ordering a Pokemon to evolve, Pokemon are under no obligation to obey anything their trainer says, including evolving. Ash's Charizard is infamous for being disobedient and Misty's Psyduck and Jesse's Wobbuffet both ignore their trainers' repeatedly expressed desire for them to remain in their Poke Balls unless specifically called for. As such, even if Sabrina did (telepathically) order her Abra to evolve, her desire for it to evolve would be one out of several factors that would go into Abra deciding whether or not it evolved and only did so because it wanted to, which was the point that he was trying to make. Even if you still insist that Sabrina did telepathically order her Abra to evolve and that it does count as a trainer ordering her Pokemon to evolve and the Pokemon then evolving still counts as answering the question, even though it was Abra's decision that mattered and not Sabrina's order, it would still be nitpicking, given the context of the question.
You are entirely free to nitpick if you want to. It just wouldn't do much to sway people against the argument as a whole.

Despite what happened in the anime, this video is still very relevant IMO. Especially, the part after you said "I don't him to." Now that Ash did win the Alola League, whether ANYONE likes it or not, the Pokemon Anime will never be the same as ever. I think Ash's Alola victory was the writer's commitment for the next Gen 8 anime(which I think will feature Ash as the protagonist). Your prediction of Alola League was based on past instances and it will be logical if that was the case if they were to continue with Sun and Moon Style or go back to the Old Style. Ash winning here is DEFINITELY effect the direction of the next Pokemon anime.
Although I have to say, as someone who was genuinely suspicious of the SM anime but coming to like it, I'm very sad that after Pokemon Sun and Moon ends, it will be marked as the sandbag for everyone to go back to backlash at. With Ash's Victory, the attention to the Pokemon Anime has rises to heights never seen before. Almost ALL of the people are ones who came ONLY for League, being exposed to the SM Style for first time. League deviated from the norm most likely to fit the atmosphere of the SM Anime, being the first thing the world is exposed to, it's just as bad or even worst than the first Sun and Moon PV reveal 3 years ago. Everyone(including SM viewers and me) will move on to Galar and to never came back to SM(I probably will), despite for being the ONLY series to break the conventional repetitive nature of the decade long series(NOT talking about the League here), presented something ONLY SM have shown to do.

I see your point, but in my opinion, ash still is a worse than average trainer. Also the explanation of ash's pikachu is true but it doesn't make ash any better. If he was a good trainer, his teams, skill, movesets and everything else would be on a much higher level. Also please, yes the ash hater know that pikachu lost to snivy because it wasn't at it's full power, but it still should have won. I am not saying that the quick attack should have OHKOed the thing, yes they could make the battle look intense, but it still doesn't make any sense

It was like watching an athlete who's been training for years and who has competed and beaten professionals lose to someone who literally just bought a pair of cleets the other day and started training . Besides only pikachu's electric type moves were handicapped. His other moves were working fine. So ash defenders should stop trying to make it look like zekrom stole all of pikachu's power or something

If Ash is worse than the average trainer, then that would mean all the trainers he defeated along with the gym leaders can only be called, trash. Moroever, a pokemon just doesn't learn a move by leveling up in the anime. The pokemon needs to learn or accidentaly do something that will result in the pokemon learning it. It is like you're saying, an athlete who became a runner up in an international tournament is worse than an average athlete.
Though I agree with the notion that Pikachu losing to Snivy is quite ludicrous. That was some shitty writing.

Gonna do the same thing I'm doing to all the other comments about this topic:
The pokemon league almost certainly has a way to regulate and change a pokemon's level, and it would make perfect sense for Ash to set pikachu back down to level 5 for every new region, to be on the right power level for it and get better as a trainer, not necessarily have the pokemon be so good in comparison that he never gets any better.

@@nothingsuspicioushere.6379 Yup. That's how it is. Actually, BW is the stain of the pokemon anime. It should have gone from Sinnoh to Kalos. That would have been a more natural flow. I think it plays a part. It doesn’t justify the loss entirely, but it is one reason.
Plus, people can get unlucky at the worst times. Riolu evolving into Lucario was such an example. Evolution has turned battles around for Ash, so why wouldn’t it work for others?
Also, right when the Unova League was starting, Cameron arrived late for registration. However, the Nurse Joy decided to register him anyway after Cameron begged her to let him join. *That* part bothered me. If Nurse Joy didn’t cave in, Ash wouldn’t have lost to Cameron. Though I’m not sure if Ash begged on Cameron’s behalf...
Still, had that happened, Ash could’ve at least fought Virgil (the Eevee trainer). Even if Ash lost, the loss would’ve been against someone strong and competent.

The one thing i take away from this whole thing is that there is a lot of hypocrisy on the part of the director of the Pokemon anime. They have stated in the past that if Ash was to win any of the leagues he would no longer be an interesting character and his story would be finished. However this statement is severely flawed when you consider that even if Ash did win he would still need to take on the Elite 4 and the Champion. When Dragon Ball transitioned to Z no one was expecting the revelation of Goku to be part of an ancient warrior race to be part of the same continuity as the previous series, but yet Akira Toryiama allowed Goku's story to evolve while letting the status quo stay intact. Dragon Ball is or if not just as big of a franchise as Pokemon is when it comes to the anime, so i fail to see this statement of Ash being less interesting holds up when Dragon Ball manages to do the same thing but keep us invested in Goku as a character. Not to mention like you said the anime has gone on to mention that winning a league doesn't automatically make him a Pokemon Master and the titles of Pokemon Master and Champion are completely different from each other.

ash actually had it a lot harder than the game protagonists.
If you think back, Ash had to deal with obstacles and interruptions that the game protagonists never had to deal with, which hindered his training.
Charizard not listening even after Ash had the Earth Badge, Team Rocket never going away and always interrupting his battles, he never got the broken EXP Share that made the gen 6 and 7 games so brain-dead easy, having to always stop to help the character-of-the-day with some side-quest, stuff like that.
He spent so much time making OTHER characters dreams come true, he never got to pursuit his own.

Actually, winning the Pokemon league in the anime is like winning a real-life tournament. It's not like you will automatically become a world champion, and it is also the case with how Pokemon league works in the anime. You need to battle the champion first and then if you win, you will finally be considered a champion. If you win the Pokemon league, you're just a winner, and you get a throphy and other rewards in the anime, as simple as that.
Edit: Okay, I know Ash won the Alola league and all, and he automatically becomes Alola's first ever Pokemon Champion, and that leads to another point I wanna say here: You can also choose if you want to continue your journey instead of sticking with your job as a Pokemon Champion, just like how Ash chose to continue his journey after winning the Orange Island league and the Battle Frontier.

I'm speaking as someone who before this week only saw Pokemon as a kid and then once marathoned every episode up to the point were Ash gave the GS ball to someone (I forgot who since it was half a decade ago) & then stuck to playing games: In 1st gen, Ash was under a mile thick plot armor + the writers still didn't know what to do with levels (the pokemon school episode comes to mind where one kid was citing at what levels pidgey line evolves) and some of the more memorable moments from back then were the ''pity badges'' sine more people will remember Ash using sprinkles with Brock or saving Erica's gym from fire than if he battled them using type advantages.
That said, in anime Ash's strength is thinking outside the box, something you can't do in the games (seriously baby me was so confused when playing gen 1... ) and there instead of 'learning by level up', moves are learned by pokemon figuring out how to do them (watching sun & moon reminded me of Johto anime episode where Ash was training with his Cyndaquil to teach it a new move & little me was confused why didn't he just level-grind it to get to appropriate level for it to learn it...) so Ash being so resourceful is good in anime but would be bad in games so no wonder people who casually watch anime & only get invested when trying to defeat that annoying gym leader or member of elite 4 will be predisposed to equate the anime and the games, especially because "they're both called pokemon"
that said I have about 30 more episodes in season 21 to watch so see ya

ash is a loser...it's not about the evolutions but rather the experience he has gained throughout his journey...he can't come out on top when it really matters...

Well that is because he always gets formatted or reset nearly every season with the possible exception of Kalos. Had he retained all the knowledge and EXP he gained from the previous seasons he would have been OP and possibly won each generation after a certain point.

@@mistresskixen6142 the only region where he lost his experience was unova in all other series he was just improved, that's why he was getting closed to win the league everytime and finally become champion and beat his most strongest opponent with his strongest pokemon.
