The reset was actually due to the fact of levels like Pikachu knew basically good electric moves and was a high level that took out a legendary black and white begins taken out by a snivy that someone just got and probably never battled before that's why people think he restarts levels have nothing to do with it but you said game and anime dont really mix. Well Growlithe Pikachu and Eevee all evolve the same way anime and game all evolve by stones. Yes they mention levels it means nothing Pidgey evolves at this level but Slowpoke evolves when a shellder clamps on to Slowpokes tail. In game it's by level up. I'm not even sure how power levels are explained but it's something I will have to look into.

"If being an compassionate trainer is wrong, then he doesn't want to be right."
This sentence perfectly captures Ash's personality and what sets him apart from others. Yeah, his training style has some flaws, but nobody is perfect. Being over emotional is a flaw that many people have.
And hell, this isn't even a big flaw for Ash. The way Ash trains and treats his Pokémon has earned him the respect of Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, Frontier Brains and even Champions. And even trainers who disagree with him like Paul grew to respect him.
His unwavering kindness and compassion has touched countless people and Pokémon. Most trainers would have given up on a disobedient Charizard or a Snivy that didn't have interest in being caught. But not Ash. He kept going and kept trying until his pure heart won them over.
Hell, he's even died in some of the movies protecting others. And that's not even counting the amount of times he's gotten himself injured from helping others, both in the anime and movies. He has never put his own safety over his Pokémon's life. In DP, he was fully willing to go up a giant robot to rescue Pikachu. And in XY, he jumped off of Lumiose Tower with no hesitation and was willing to use himself as a cushion to save Pikachu knowing full well he would die.
While he isn't the only character in the series to do this (Hareta from the Diamond and Pearl Adventures manga does this religiously), it does set him apart from others in the anime.
Some would call it stupidity. Some would call it weakness. Some would even call it cliché. But this is who Ash Ketchum is.

The whole thing with Ash-grenija is pretty much what Ash said to Max, there is a difference between reading about something and then actually experincing it, just like how there is a difference between learning a technique and then mastering it, this is even brought up other anime where even if the main character can learn the technique that doesn't mean they've mastered it. People still need to take this into perspective, imagine if you were able to master a Martial arts just days before a tournament and then went up against someone who had two years of mastering that same martial art.

I feel like a lot of the Ash criticism treats it like Ash exists in a vacuum and the rest of the world is stagnant. A lot of people have called out his Charizard losing to Pyramid King Brandon's Dusclops b/c Charizard has gone toe to toe with legendaries, but so would Brandon's Pokemon since he has the golems. It's like people can't remember that high level trainers have strong Pokemon too.
I also feel like a lot people only see the results of battles (something similar to a lot of sports results) without taking into consideration the rest of a what went on during the battles / tournaments. Ash lost to Tobias, but he was also the one who had the best results against him.

    • @MattCMG
      @MattCMG  5 лет назад +30

That's what I'm sayin! People will just look at the fact that Ash got top 8 or top 4 or runner-up and assume that he lost because of some bullshit, when in reality there are many factors at play in each of those battles. Ash is strong, its just that there are still those that are stronger than him, so he seems weaker.

It's not just a matter of Ash and his competition being stronger than one another. People forget that beating a person does not mean absolute superiority over them: it just means that one person pulled out ahead at that particular clash.
There seems to be this stigma that the protagonist should not lose to people they have beaten even if that person is just as capable of improving as the protagonist.
I think that people aren't used to there being only a few "favorites", "elites", or other strong competitors who don't lose to anyone other than the protagonist, the protagonist's rival, or an extreme antagonist. Rarely in media do I see there a truly even competition where everyone is at the same level such that it can go either way in any battle. In the Pokemon fandom, when a "champions league" is hypothesized, a favorite character such as Red, Cynthia, Edgelord OC Ash, or some other Self-Insert is typically portrayed as being leagues above even the elite.
I do not think I have seen much media in which almost every competitor is on an "even Level" such that a fight can truly go either way.
On a side note, you brought up the criticism that Ash makes many rookie mistakes. The thing is that making common and simple mistakes is a common occurrence in everyday life. I see people make these mistakes in everyday life, be them business men, university professors, or children. Even in the Pokemon community, Poke-tubers make lots of easy or poor judgment mistakes. Lots of people have "bad habits" or behaviors or actions that they may unconsciously default back to under various scenarios, such as stress or confusion.
The thing about Ash is that he is the focus of the show so we see him the most. Ash does not make any more rookie mistakes than anyone else: he is just the one an audience SEES making mistakes. This is something I think a lot of people can actually relate to, especially when working on teams. Some people take a lot of flack for performing poorly as if they are independent of their comrades' mistakes and are sometimes blamed for their comrades making mistakes.

As both a Pokemon fan and a NFL football, I usually call Ash the Phillip Rivers of Pokemon. He has impressive stats, and occasionally those impressive stats get him into the playoffs (i.e. contention for the championship), but he just can't get to the championship. And now that Ash has won the Alola League, it might be better to call him the Aaron Rodgers or the Joe Flacco of the Pokemon world. Yeah, he finally won, but that might be his only win, which is a far shot from Pokemon Master. NFL analogies aside, I appreciate Ash loses just as much as he wins. It makes him more realistic and more relatable. And for one more NFL analogy, it's easy to win multiple consecutive Super Bowls on Madden 20, but it's harder to make the cut to a real NFL team, let alone win a championship.

  • @amarvax3442
    @amarvax3442 5 лет назад +230

He may not be the strongest trainer {Yet}, but he's the ideal and best of us. Out of any character in Pokemon, he treats his Pokemon with care the most. Everyone else either only cares for one Pokemon {Red and his Charizard as seen in the Pokemon Origins anime} or they just want them to get stronger without any focus on their feelings sometimes. Ash represents the best of us. He sees all his Pokemon like friends and family. Every single Pokemon he has or had, he shared a powerful bond with them. No one was excluded. When we play Pokemon from old generations to new generations we only focus on getting those sweet sweet stats to a high amount. Ash isn't like that though. He does want his Pokemon to progress but not in the selfish, almost sorta forceful way that we do it. Why do you think he never mega evolved any of his Pokemon. Mega Evolutions and some of their dex entries for them are brutal, they hurt the Pokemon. I think Ash prefers to make his Pokemon happy, while still achieving incredible things.
No one in the Pokemon world will ever come close to what he stands for. And once he does become a Pokemon Master, he will be THE Pokemon Master. The only one who truly understands all Pokemon.

Red is supposed to represent us the player so it makes sense that origins wasnt as touchy feely or as thought provoking as pokemon the anime. usually is. Red is essentially a self insert for us just like how we play the pokemon games irl. If they ever decided to make an anime based off the adventure manga with a huge budget it'd PROB be the best animated pokemom media ever made.

I agree about most of the things you said aside from the fact that the movies are non cannon, since the show has plenty of evidence against that aside from Mewtwo:
    1. In Johto Ash and Richie found a baby Lugia and Ash told him that he saw one when he traveled in the orange islands
    2. In the Darkrai movie Dawn bought a Lunar wing and later in the series it was shown that she still had it
    3. Diamond and Pearl referenced the fact that Ash has aura powers that was originaly brought up in the Lucario and Mew movie
    4. In Best Wishes N watched the 6 Genesects that appeared in the 16th movie escape from a team plasma lab
Aside from that I do agree that the argument about Ash not catching legendaries is mostly incorrect mainly because most of them are needed to maintain some kind of balance like the legendary birds. I mean imagine if Ash was like "Yes I know that by removing those 3 birds the nature would be thrown into chaos and people are gonna get killed...buuuuut they're strong and rare, I must have them"

Bro i agree completely agree with your argument regarding pikachu's state when facing snivy. Something you could have added to make your argument even stronger was that in in our world even the greatest athletes have major dips and inconsistancies in there performance. Useually athletes train up and plan for a specific event, for example the olympics, and show godly strength and talent, but after the event is over their bodies burn out and have to go to rehab. When I was training for my black belt in karate i showed unbelievable strength, skill and stamina, and could lunge 185 pounds 27 rep max on each leg (27 with left and 27 with right) and could do 81 pushups. After my black belt grading my body was so exhausted from all the crazy training i had to take several months off and my lifting stats plummeted when i got back into it. Most athletes in real life train to peak at a specific event and then they have to take time off and their conditioning goes down. Bodybuilders in magazines don't really look like that in there day to day . There training, (meals and everything) are carefully scheduled and monitored to peak at a very specific event. Since levels don't exist in the anime, pokemon are a lot more like the creatures in your world, being very inconsistent with their strength and stamina changing from day to day or circumstance to circumstance.

@@maggieent3215 But that doesn't make it any less bs from where it was before, you don't need to make power scaling super consistent but you have to at-least make it believable, nobody even with his explanation -Which most people already knew when considering this- think that snivy should have beaten Pikachu. It would be the equiavent of a 15 yr old beating the shit out of 30 yr olds 60% of the time, for a 7yr old to walk up to him, -lets be super generous and assume he could only punch at 20% of usual - and beat the shit out of him, he would still win from experience alone. They could of made Pikachu more sick, as tho he could barely stand and snivy was able to stomp him because of that factor. Not a -Well he coudn't use electric type attacks, so thus he loses. It makes the show feel much less canon and makes people think the previous gen, where a few episodes ago pikachu could atleast stand up to a fucking legendary who could also -assumption being made here-sweep every gym in Unova. It makes you think that this is a reset, because you think what he could do before against SUPER GOOD TRAINERS, and then loses to a guy with practically 0 experience compared to Ash or every trainer ash had just beaten.
The explantion the guy gives above could be valid, if snivy was even SOMEWHAT comparable to pikachu, with even the taddist bit of experience, it would be like if a body builder was exhausted and then a guy who has been malnourished walked up to him and one punched him.

I know Pokémon movies are shaky in terms of canonicity, but you know how good of a trainer you are if an ancient guardian of a the sky does what your telling them to do.

I liked the ending of this video. A detail I find notable is the inclusion of a screenshot of pikachu and bulbasaur when you were saying that some pokemon want to prove they are better in their base forme.
I also think Ash is a good role model. He's flawed, but the way he grows and improves himself is a good inspiration for people of all ages, young and old. (except babies, but they shouldn't be watching cartoons/anime for ten year olds yet anyway)
His progression from a trainer who barely understands his pikachu, is cocky without much skill, and cries a bit too much to a trainer who is in sync with his pikachu, is humble but somewhat skillful, and saves his tears for an appropriate time is nice to watch, and a good arc.
Ash's crying not being seen as a bad thing in itself is a good example to have, since boys are sometimes told not to cry when crying is a healthy part of managing and expressing emotions.
I also feel many people underestimate Ash's sheer determination. He has good stamina, and is able to withstand - and walk in a sustained deluge of electricity, especially in serious episodes where stakes are higher. (or withstand a psychic attack like in the Sabrina arc, if I remember right). He consistently refuses to give up on his Pikachu, and this extends to other pokemon (as Matt mentioned in the end). Ash trains *with* his pokemon (ex: as pikachu learns iron tail, he does pushups, and in Alola, he trains with rockruff- in a pretty silly way, but he also takes attacks from litten head on) and also earns trust from Pokemon by protecting them (ex: Professor Sycamore's Garchomp;multiple times when he steps in to shield pokemon or takes a pokemon and rolls out of danger). These traits are useful in battle, esp in a world were bonds with your battling companions have real power.
Also, you read this far, so what do you think of Team Rocket? (Jessie and James' group, not Giovanni's overarching team)

People arne't seeing the journey and its quite disappointing. The whole idea of the show is to demonstrate the adventures he goes through and challenges he faces. Fair enough he gets flakked for not winning any leagues yet, but thats just the same as Sports players, who can be in the high tier league (tennis, soccer, basketball and etc) but never winning the championships. doesn't mean they suck, it just means theres always better players out there, so the same concept would apply to the pokemon world, especially how vast that world is. Just my opinion.
ps: like what matt says, consistently being on the top 8 is pretty impressive itself

Did viewers forget that Mega Sceptile was taken out by a Water Shuriken ? It was FOUR TIMES resistant against water moves being Grass/Dragon HAHAHA True, it was a GIANT Shuriken but the one used on Charizard looked like a freaking Kienzan Disc from Krillin (honestly, I was more upset about that ass pull of a move...there was literally 0 build up to Ash and Greninja using a technique THAT powerful. Even Alain was taken aback by that move and called for Blast Burn out of desperation). Not to mention, Ash-Greninja took a Dragon Call head on (remember Tough Claws too) and damage from another Dragon Claw or Thunderpunch (I can't remember which one). Also, Greninja (game wise anyway) isn't much of a bulk Pokemon so it makes sense why it was knocked out.
I DON'T like the outcome from that battle, but looking back it makes sense.

Ah, I remember when the pt 1 vid was just starting to blow up. This video was great and I wholeheartedly agree with your overall stance on Ash. I do have some things to point out though:
    1. Some people definitely set the bar way too high with what they expect from Pokemon, but I don't think it's fair to expect nothing but mindless action from the show. The Paul rivalry, for one thing, is something I can legitimately respect writing-wise, and I hear SM's done a number of really great emotional episodes as well like the Stoutland death episode. If anything, I respect things like that more as an adult than as a kid where I just wanted to see Pokemon do cool shit in battle.
    2. As much as I agree about how the anime only adapts things that make sense within itself, you have to admit there's a limit to how much they can break the game mechanics before it just gets stupid. Thunder Armor is one, and in general it's subjective how much of that stuff anyone is willing to accept.
    3. I've softened up a bit on the Snivy battle recently, but I can't ever fully accept it. Levels don't exist in the anime, sure, but Snivy was still completely untrained. To be fair though, I guess the anime has never been very consistent with how powerful starters actually are. You have May's Torchic (and even Pikachu himself, tbh) who was a total loser at first, while others like Snivy that feel like they can battle well right off the bat.
    4. Ash-Greninja being less powerful than Charizard is the reason it should've won. From a narrative standpoint, it's about the underdog overcoming impossible odds, and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth to see the show go "nah, it really was impossible." Although I have to agree the saltfest over the Kalos League was pretty hilarious in hindsight LMAO
Excellent vid though, it's awesome to see such an in-depth defense of a show like Pokemon. Some people don't realize how god-awful the anime would be if it were completely loyal to the games lol

How so? I can understand movies 2, 8, and 16, but the Sinnoh Trilogy certainly isn't canon. In the Team Galactic arc in DP where Cyrus steals the Lake Trio and summons Dialga and Palkia, Ash and his friends have no idea who those Pokemon are, yet they've supposedly seen them in the two movies that were out at the time. Doesn't add up. If those movies were canon and they knew about Dialga and Palkia, then why don't they know about them in the series? They can't be a different Dialga and Palkia because there's only one of each.

@@wikiuser92 I suppose that's true, but that also doesn't explain how they don't know about Dialga and Palkia despite having encountered them before. Same goes for Darkrai, where in the same episode where its revealed that Dawn has the Lunar Wing from Movie 10, none of them know what Darkrai is (at least in the Japanese version, which is the true canon).
We could probably argue that the anime takes place in a universe where the movies didn't happen and the movies are a different continuity entirely, and could explain how Dawn has the Lunar Wing in the anime (meaning she got it through different means in the anime's continuity, as she doesn't mention Alamos Town or anything like that) but doesn't remember Darkrai or the Creation Trio. what does it really even mean to be a Pokemon master? I dont think its about winning battles or catching all the Pokemon. Ash wants nothing more than to befriend and understand all the pokemon in the world, because deep down in his heart he truly loves all Pokemon. There is a great episode early in Sun and Moon series where Ash and Pikachu swim to an uninhabited island off the coast of Melemele and spend the day just running around, seeing all the Pokemon, and trying to befriend them... And even when a group of Alolan Exeggutor don't like him at first, Ash preservers and gives it another shot!! and eventually the Exeggutor realize his good intentions and welcome Ash and Pikachu to come and play with them. Ash doesn't try to catch them or battle them, he just wants to be around them and experience life the way they do. And because of his efforts to befriend the Exeggutor, they are able to help him save the life of a Wimpod later on in the episode.
In my mind, Ash Ketchum arrived at his destination long ago,. He is already a Pokemon Master ...and every day for Ash is just another day in the life of a true Pokemon Master.
Ash just doesn't look at it that way because being a Pokemon master takes work and having that goal in his minds eye keeps him focused....

Tobias used his Darkrai, and ONLY his Darkrai to make his way through the entire Sinnoh Gym Chain, and then, in the League, he only used Darkrai until Ash managed to do what no one expected him to do, actually beat what seemed like an unbeatable foe. He then managed to defeat Tobias' second Pokemon, Latios, which no one in the series is known to have even faced before. Not to mention, after his battle with Ash, only Darkrai was needed to finish the League. Ash managed to honestly beat a Darkrai that no one was known to have beaten, and then managed to bring down a Latios, that he could never of anticipated. Ash may not have Pokemon that can defeat Legendary and Mythical Pokemon single handed, but his strategic plays and choice of Pokemon to use is undeniable. He is already, in his own way, a Pokemon Master.

Matt I really think if ash wins the alola league people will still say he didn't deserve it because of the Hau incident. People want ash to succeed but when he does they say it wasn't earned. This double standard is honestly blasphemous. Also I watched each leagues climax and I think that ash isn't ruthless enough to win a league, he is a good trainer to make the finals(quarter, semi or main final) of the leagues but he lets his emotions get in the way of his potential victory. In conclusion ash is not a bad trainer, people just expect him to win as he is the main protagonists. And the argument that ash is 10 and a 10 year old can't win it all is pretty dumb as in one of the leagues he go his as whooped by a 8 year old in the quarter finals when the 8 year old brought 5 pokémon to a 6 mon battle🤦🏾‍♂️. Tbh people just love to hate on ash.

From watching the VS Hau episode, it was indeed Nanu that was too lazy to even attempt to check Rowlet if he was knocked out resulting in that fake out. He was literally like "Guess that's over". I'm like "... you can't be fucking with us, right?" Also, Rowlet was feeling drowsy during the fight (there's a scene that shows it; watch it again if need to) and I don't think Decidueye's first Sky Attack was fully charged to do even a dent. Look at it. It just charged without completing the full move, while Rowlet's Brave Bird bruised it. The owl probably thought of just resting his eyes and ended up snoozing away as he always does. He is serious, but his sleepiness is just his force of habit.
For Hau, I fully respect him of choosing to continue the battle. He's here to win. Not BS around. I just wish he made a little more appearances, and hopefully see him around a little more after this. When he cried, I don't think it was the frustration of losing but the full respect of his grandfather, Hala, of doing a tremendous job. That gratitude just can't be ignored and Hau couldn't contain his emotions no more. God, I truly wish he was around more throughout the series.

What if Ash is already a Pokémon Master?
He's one of the few persons who has met legendary Pokémon (canon or not, still seems like something for him that might happen) and the legendaries nearly always speak to him, the telepathy.
Every movie, he meets and befriends a legendary, or mythical.
Not many trainers seem to be close in the same way as Ash with Pokémon. He seems a bit more understanding and willing to know more in my opinion. Infact, his friends and other persons are inspired by his determination and attitude and try to get better as well, learning from him. That's more personality wise, than Pokémon, but Ash has a good influence and others notice, people and Pokémon.
Pokémon Master doesn't sound like, "beat a league to become a master". Sounds more like either a literal master who's a Pokémon, explains the first movie with Mewtwo's plan about being a Pokémon Master.
    OR
A person who is very knowledgeable and experienced in Pokémon livelihood, habbits, moods and Pokémon overall.
Ash is a Master...but one from his passion and relationships with Pokémon.

The part about how most wild pokemon want to remain where they are and some choose to join a trainer is implied in the games, where the wild pokemon you encounter want to challenge you and/or become stronger under a trainer. It makes the whole aspect of catching wild animals and pitching them in battles less inhumane.

I was hoping you'd compare the Pokémon League to Victory Road, and how Ash stacks up there.
People tend to complain how the anime's Pokémom League isn't just "Elite 4+Champion", and they act like Ash losing without facing them is horrible.
But really, all Victory Road is in the games is a cave. Just another cave, like any other that you've presumably traveled through during your journey. Strong trainers and Pokémon with the same goal of reaching E4 as you are in the cave. But battling them isn't a requirement. You can avoid them and just travel through the cave. AND if you underprepared, no biggie because you can just leave to stock up on items and come back without issue. If all Ash had to do to reach the Elite 4 was travel through a cave full of strong trainers he MIGHT need to battle, he'd probably have reached Diantha in Kalos no problem.
The Pokémon League is a straight-up tournament that forces you to repeatedly battle other trainers of similar to superior levels of strength to your own. You can't just back out of the battles, and if you underprepared... Well, too bad, because you should have done extra strategizing ahead of time, and even if you did, it's not guaranteed because all other trainers might be just as prepared as you with stronger Pokémon.
Framed like that, no wonder Ash hasn't won a single League yet. He's forced to battle trainers with the same level of prep, ambition, and Pokémon as he does, and so even the slightest lapse in judgement or disadvantage in battle is going to make or break both sides of the battle.

Also lets face it... its not at all hard to become a champion in the games. If you commit to it you can become champion in just a few weeks. And all you have to do is sit on your ass and spam full restores.
Its more realistic in the anime. The leagues are better compared to VGC tournaments. And while I have no experience in those, I have heard they are immensely difficult.
What I like about the anime is how they portray the Champions and Elite 4. Theyre not AI opponents who are programmed to be difficult but not too difficult. They're real people with years of experience under their belts. Lets take Cynthia and Flint for example, in the episodes where they're introduced they battled Paul and Ash, both of which who have been in multiple regional tournaments prior to the battle. And they *crushed* them. With barely any effort. That's an good indicator about what its takes to become a Champion/Elite 4 member.

I love how people still complain about Mega Charizard X beating Ash-Greninja, but nobody talks about Ash's Charizard beating Gary's Golem and Blastoise.
I get it, people are nostalgic towards Ash's Charizard. But hating Alain for something Ash did on a bigger scale numerous times is beyond childish.
"But Ash-Greninja was beating Diantha's Mega Gardevoir."
If you watched the *context,* you would know that Diantha's main goal throughout the entire fight was to satisfy her curiosity about what made Ash's Greninja so special. Even when Mega Evolved, you can tell she's holding back and Ash was playing very aggressively.
And if that still doesn't convince you, this very same incomplete Ash-Greninja lost to Wulfric's Avalugg, not even a Mega Evolution. Ash had to master Ash-Greninja just to beat a Gym Leader.
Alain, on the other hand, had way better feats than anything Ash has done in Kalos. He battled on even ground with two Elite Four members and even beat one of them, he battled 9 Megas in a row, went toe to toe with Steven's Mega Metagross before Lysandre interrupted, and even helped subdue 50% Zygarde.
The power gap was established so damn well, and yet people still grasp at straws even 3 years later.
"Oh, Alain's Mega Bracelet was harnessing Mega Evolution energy."
That energy was for Lysandre. Nothing even implied that it powered up Charizard.
    "Charizard took more damage!"
So? Ash has won plenty of battles where his Pokémon took more hits. Why is this different?
I swear, this is almost as bad as the shipping wars in the RWBY community.

And I am pretty sure, as much as I hate to say this, had she known what she would be facing she would have come prepared and with that sort of battling mindset. What I would say is, if peak level Ash(in terms of battling), that is Kalos Ash earns more experience in Bond Phenomenon with his Greninja and by experience I mean become more powerful in that form (by battling strong trainers on a regular basis) and not just master it enough to control it, then yeah Ash is like 2-3% behind Alain(who himself has beaten an E4 member and put up a good fight against another) or worst case scenario 5% behind him in terms of power level. So yeah, our boy Ash at his peak level(the maximum we have seen so far) is better than many seem to think and there's nothing that suggests that he will never surpass that level in the future. He didn't really get hit by that Sky Attack, so why would lowering Decidueye's Attack matter? Rowlet obviously avoided the attack (once with his cloak, again with his feather clone). The announcer mentioned Rowlet using "the art of substitution" and I suspect Ash simply didn't notice the difference at the time. If people are getting that upset over a show that's always gonna be aimed at kids then they seriously need to rethink their life choices. Having said that I can understand a few complaints. I don't think it's setting your standards too high to want Ash to win and him winning doesn't end his story. Him winning a league, or anyone winning a league, isn't the endgame of it all. There's still plenty more gyms and leagues out there and plenty more trainers with different pokemon. Ash can win a league and the anime can still continue. Cause really all he's winning is first place against a bunch of other trainers. He's not winning against an elite 4 member or even a champion, who are way more powerful than your average trainer. And he can still lose to an elite four member if he takes the champion league, showing he still has a ways to go. I mean trip battled alder and he lost after like one attack. So I think Ash can still win a league and it not be the endgame for him. Plus, after being with Ash for all these years, it would honestly be nice to see our boy win for once. But it's most definitely true that Ash cares about his pokemon, he doesn't force them to do anything they don't want to, and that actually makes him a better trainer than most.

If there's one thing I need to disagree on, it's the mention of the movies not being canon, and I know you're not the only person to think this. Others have pointed out that a few have been called back to in the main series, which proves they're canon; and not just those few. Filler episodes in the Pokemon anime work differently than in an anime adapted from the original source material, such as an ongoing manga - in the latter, it's done to space out episodes from chapters until there's considerable distance between the two to continue adapting them. As you've said, the Pokemon anime only truly adapts the world the games are based in and work around that; the anime follows it's own story, the filler episodes are part of that story just treated with less importance, the movies are considered filler and are therefore still canon (and also because the anime is just one large commercial, they're mainly made for marketing the legendaries, I'm assuming so as not to ruin the flow of the main series. Side note, +100 respect for Ash for helping save the world multiple times).
I was glad to see a part 2 pop up in my recommended and while I've been mad at the Kalos finals since it aired, you've given me a different perspective of it, which I appreciate. I will say that the way it was handled, and how hyped up it was both in and out of universe, made it all the more obnoxious that it happened; seriously, that random trainer he battled that held him up for his first battle in the league should've just not existed. I understand it's presented in a way to show this trainer that Ash deserved to be at the league, but I still hate that it was also presented to continue the hype that Ash *will* win the league, which didn't happen. That'll always be a huge gripe I have with the Kalos league.
All that said, thank you for this video! Ash is one of my all-time favorite characters and it's always nice to see people defend him. I'm sort of hoping for his win in SM, but if it doesn't happen then that's fine too. Even if he does win, people will still find a way to complain about it, which is bullshit lol.

*Some* of the movies are canon, most aren't, and even with the ones that are there are still inconsistencies in the anime that point towards them being non-canon or happening in a different continuity all together.
I think people would be way more accepting of the Kalos League loss if they hadn't hyped it up that way. They never explicitly hyped it up as a win for Ash, but people saw what they wanted to see from the promo material.

    • @shinypkmnfan13
      @shinypkmnfan13 5 лет назад +1

@@MattCMG It doesn't make sense to deem some movies as canon and others not, the inconsistencies can be chalked up to the writing. You can't just pick and choose because of some slight discrepancies; that's like saying Sun & Moon isn't canon because Ash wasn't able to lift a log like he could in that one AG episode. At the very least, you would have to choose between one of the Victini movies as your personal canon for the series. Like, I understand why people will say they aren't canon, because in the grand scheme of Ash's story as a whole, they're pretty insignificant, but they didn't just not happen because of some errors in the writing - that's just how the entire anime tends to be, the writing has never been perfect. Movies 20 & 21 are definitely not canon, however, because they happen in an alternative retelling of his journey.

I agree with most of what you said, but there are somethings I think you got wrong:
When people say Ash always get reseted they don't mean literally. There are indeed people who think BW or SM are reboots simply because they dislike these series, but the common complaint is that Ash always acts like he's a rookie again, literally forgetting the basics.
That being said, it also isn't true. Ash didn't act like a rookie in Hoenn, Sinnoh, Kalos or even Alola. There's a infamous scene people always mention where he throws a pokeball at a Treecko without weakening it first, and has to be reminded by May. I rewatched this scene, and I even went after a sub version of it...and he doesn't forget it. He gets too excited because, as he says it himself, he wanted to get a Treecko ever since he saw one at Birch's lab. He throws the pokeball without thinking and May points out how he was the one who taught her that in a previous episode. It's a joke and also a way to prevent him from catching the Treecko early on, as that's the climax of the episode.
The only time Ash does forget the basics is in Unova, where he does the same with a Deerling and Iris points out his mistake, accusing him of being a rookie. He just agrees and tries to weaken the Deerling. The whole scene is presented as him being rookieish and needing to relearn the basics, while the Hoenn one was just a joke about him getting too excited at the moment and acting without thinking for a second.
And I disagree about Pikachu. I don't think he(outside of BW)gets reseted either, nor that his strength varies. He IS Ash's strongest pokemon, maybe weaker than only Greninja, and his strenght is consistent. The thing is that, as you pointed out many times, the anime isn't like the games.
Pikachu is strong, but he can lose depending on the situation. That's why he lost against Viola's Surskit with the Ice Field strategy, or the Bellsprout in the Kanto League(which had a unique fighting style that could only be countered by Muk). You're right that, in serious battles, he will be stronger though. There's also no HP bar indicating how many hits he can take, so not only does that mean he can last alot if determined, that also means he can go down with little depending on the circumstances. People also point out his battle against Taillow in Hoenn to show he was reseted, but if you actually pay attention to it, Pikachu is never portrayed as weaker or in the same level as Taillow. Taillow is a wild pokemon that, while being good at battling, doesn't have much experience, especially because it never had a trainer. Pikachu, at that point, was obviously way stronger than it, but it refused to go down despite taking many electric attacks because of how sttuborn it was. That's the whole reason Ash catches it, as, as Brock points out, it would eventually get seriously hurt if they didn't stop the battle, but it refused to give up. People say Pikachu was reseted because "It's a lv 100 Pikachu not being able to take down a lv 5 wild Taillow even using electric attacks", but since the anime isn't the games, that's possible. Taillow doesn't have a HP bar, if it refuses to give up, it won't fall. It wouldn't have been accurate if Pikachu was portrayed as weaker or on the same level as Taillow, but that isn't the case. Another moment is when Pikachu "loses" to a wild Grubbin at the beginning of SM, when he just got hit badly because Lillie ended up getting in the way, and had to be taken to a Pokemon Center. Just some episodes later, this same Pikachu takes down Hala's Hariyama. Hala is a extremelly strong trainer in the anime, the mentor of strong trainers such as Kukui and Guzma, and he sends out Hariyama, his strongest pokemon, after realizing how strong Ash actually was during their battle, and Ash beats him, in episode 10, with Pikachu.
Just like Ash, the only time Pikachu was actually reseted was in Unova. Yes, he was tired from the Zekrom thing, but the exhaustion didn't affect him that much. There's also only one occasion where Ash gets distracted, and Pikachu should've been able to take more. The problem with that battle wasn't Pikachu losing to a "lv 5 Snivy", it was how badly it was written. If they had put more emphasis on how tired Pikachu was, or had more instances where Pikachu gets hit badly because the situation distracts Ash, it would've made alot more sense. They could've even just not literally said this was "Snivy's first battle". We've seen pokemon who have some battle experience without trainers, Ash's own Snivy in this series is like that. If they hadn't said that, we could've assumed this was the case, but they made sure to make it as clear as possible that Ash was losing to a rookie without much justification, so it just doesn't make much sense.
And the worst part is that, even when Ash battles Trip again, he still loses. Yes, he has some experience by that point, but definitelly not as much as Ash, specially with no handicaps. If you compare it to Paul, he had as much experience as Ash, and even then they tied on their first battle, and even though Paul won the other ones, they had justification, and Ash still did well. Their 6x6 battle, where Paul beats Ash 4x0, is one where Paul brings his old pokemon, where Ash only uses his new unnevolved ones, and still does better than he almost always does against Trip.
People do exaggerate a bit with how bad Ash is in BW, but he did indeed get dumbed down quite a bit. In the battle against Elesa he doesn't take anything into account, bringing in a Ground type without considering she migth have a counter for that, brings in Snivy and forgets her gender, and has to be helped by Pikachu. The way he beats Elesa's Tynamo is actually smart, and one of the best moments from BW Ash, but he is a rookie almost all the other times. He is consistently portrayed as a worse trainer than he should be, needing 6 pokemon to beat 3 in the last GYM, and getting a worse ranking in the League. Compare this to XY or SM, where he easily masters Z Moves, beats Nanu's 3 pokemon with only Lycanroc, and breezes through the Leagues reaching the finals. Even before, he had always progressed in the Leagues, even in Hoenn where he got the Top 8 again, he lost to the guy who beat the League unlike in Johto, and he didn't even do that in Unova.
There's a difference between Ash being dumb and being unorthodox. There's nothing wrong with him bringing a unexpected pokemon to a battle because he has a plan, or because he thinks that's the best choice and figures something out along the way. He used Pikachu against Hapu because he knew he was the best choice as she was stronger than most of his pokemon at the time, and most of them even had the disavantage. He didn't have a specific plan but was able to hold his own for a while until he figured something out and quickly ended the battle.
I don't think Unova can be defended or explained logically, they just wanted to make a soft reboot like in the games and emulate the first gen of the anime and this was just one of the many things they did to achieve that. It just doesn't work aswell as in the games because there's continuity being broken.
There's another problem with the "Releases all of his pokemon" argument you didn't point out: Releasing doesn't, most of the time, work like in the games. The only pokemon he ever properly released were Butterfree and Lapras, Butterfree because he wanted to go with his girlfriend, and Lapras because it wanted to be with it's family, he even meets Lapras again in a episode in Johto and doesn't capture it again or something.
Pidgeot wasn't released, he was left with the other Pidgeys and Pidgeottos to help defend them. We may not have seen it in 20 years, and may never see it again, but in universe, Ash WILL get it back someday, when the other Pidgeys and Pidgeottos are good enough to defend themselves.
Goodra was only left in the swamp instead of Oak's lab so it could protect it's friends, but he is still Ash's pokemon. He can recall it anytime and has done so in the Kalos League. He just won't stay with Ash's other pokemon normally.
And Greninja was just asked by Zygarde to help with the Team Flare thing, it's a temporary thing and, even if we never see it, Ash will definetly get it back someday. Greninja was only released because it reached the same status as Ash's Pikachu, a pokemon he can't get rid of. But they didn't want to have it be with Ash everytime like Pikachu for many reasons, but it wouldn't make sense for him to just leave him with Oak after everything that happened, it would be like leaving Pikachu. So they just made up a reason for it to not be with Ash or Oak, but they can get it back anytime if they want.
Poipole is hard to say, it didn't have a specific reason to leave nor a promisse to come back, and it also wanted to be with Ash, but was needed at it's home. It's not impossible for it to comeback someday. This is different from Butterfree and Lapras who left because they wanted to be with their families, and while they're still friends with Ash, they're cleary not his pokemon anymore.
Also, Greninja was indeed as strong as Charizard, Ash just lost. I even remember there being a post credits scene in that episode where Ash and Alain have a Arm Wrestling match to illustrate how they're equal in strenght. Ash just lost that one battle.

    • @NikiYKN
      @NikiYKN 5 лет назад +2

In the games Ash isn't that strong, not because he's weaker than Red or anything, but because most of his strategies don't apply or translate well into the games. But in the anime, where they work, he is strong. I would even say he isn't just above average, he is one of the best. Throughout Kalos he was extremelly strong, barely lost any battle before the whole Ash Greninja thing, and was a mentor/inspiration to most people around him. He easily reached the finals of the League and only lost to the only trainer that matched his strength after barely winning, the same trainer who had beaten Elite Fours and matched Champions in the past. Ash himself had matched a Champion earlier, he's cleary at the Elite Four Level. Even in SM, where people say he has "reseted like in BW" just because he's more comedic, he's just as strong. He didn't lose a single pokemon to a Kahuna, is considered superior and a inspiration to most of his rivals and friends, got to the finals of the League without much difficulty, and easily mastered Z Moves to the point of getting his own. The only reason Ash doesn't beat a League is because he can't, not because the anime will end if he does or something, but because they have to keep the Status Quo. Ash has to be in the same rankings, doing the same GYM Challenge, so he can always market the GYM Leaders of the new Generation, instead of going into bigger things. He's cleary above the League Challenge.

I will say that I think that people are upset over Pidgeot because Pidgeot was released as soon as it evolved. Which... is sad. I still agree with your points in this video, though.
I do find myself agreeing with most of the things your saying in this episode, but I will say that a lot of the issues, again, especially with the Snivy battle, stems from a lack of explanation in the writing department. Nothing was stopping Ash from realizing Pikachu's strength was weakened from the Zekrom attack too, but he did nothing to indicate that. Pokemon isn't exactly hush hush about their information.
However, if it's because they expect us to already know how Pikachu's electricity and energy work by now, I understand. And your explanation of this situation cleared things up in a way the anime should've done.
I still stand by my statement that comparing Ash's fight with Gary's Electivire, and Trip's Snivy, both rather similar situations, it's easy to see why the latter is hard to swallow. That being said, I've agreed with your main point from the start: I like Ash. He's a good Trainer, and I'd dare even say that he was a good Trainer from the start. He wasn't necessarily a good battler from the start, but he was always a good Trainer. His patience with Pikachu is proof.
With the exception of people not listening to your arguments previously (which, I certainly did, I just had some issue with the Snivy one), I think everything in this video was spot on, and I don't have anything to say against it. Good on you, dude! :3

I will say that the reason why people are frustrated is because they can see that the only reason the anime still exists is because Pokemon wants to make as much money as possible. They want the anime to end on a high note, but if all the anime cares about is to make a quick buck... hate to say it, but I'm worried that it won't end on a high note as well. But that's nothing to say on your arguments. That's more me being the Devil's advocate and try to understand the POV of the frustrated fans.
I'll also say that the fact that Rowlet won against Decidueye was a first, I believe. Has any of Ash's other Pokemon, a Basic form of three levels (something Pikachu can't do, btw, since he only has Raichu) beaten the highest level of their evolutionary line? Regardless of how Rowlet won, I think that's a bigger stepping stone to Ash's growth than it's given credit.
