Hook: #10-16 curved shank
Bead: Any color (optional)

Now, you can't get any easier than that. This fly is my go to for Shad in Nor Cal. I added a tail for my variant. We call it the Wild Turkey. Long story, but the fly works well. Thank you, again.

Oh... you remind me of an idea I had this morning. A series of flies named after classic rock songs. And then... I heard George Thorogood's "I Drink Alone" and it reminded me that we could make some flies called: Old Granddad, the Johnny Walker Red, Jimmy Beam, and of course, the Wild Turkey. :-)

The best thing about these patterns Barbara, is you can tie a dozen in an hour, and fill a nymph box in one evening. And in all kinds of effective colors. :-)
@@SavageFlies I just got a magnifying glass w/led light that I ordered and sat down and tied up one before I had to return to work. I love this magnifying glass light!!! Made it so so easy for these old eyes to see a size 16 Nymph. I tied it with a yellow bead and crystal cactus chenille
@@barbaraemerich1921 I couldn't live without my magnifying flip-downs! Maybe if I was tying big streamers, but for the little bugs, I've got to see it up close. :-)

Oh man, you're talking my language with the Prince Nymph Jim. Probably my all time favorite nymph to fish. Now they take me forever to tie a box full of them, but they do catch the fish. :-)

It’s delayed harvest time here in Georgia. I definitely will put a few of these in my midge box for my next trip to Smith Creek. I agree with your comments on making the body’s thin the thinner flies have produced a lot more fish in my wintertime tail water fishing. Would love to see more midge patterns.
Excellent to hear Tony! I grew up in NW Georgia but have fished a few times in Blue Ridge and near Dahlonega. I've never made it out to Unicoi or Smith Creek. It looks beautiful though. :-)

Fantastic tie Matt. I use this pattern all winter and throughout the spring. It is such a excellent pattern. I was fishing locally on Thanksgiving and this was the pattern that caught all the fish for the day. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome to hear Layton! I had this under a foam hopper one day this summer and I ended up taking the hopper off and going with two nymphs when this guy was getting all the action. :-)

Outstanding Chad; I appreciate it! Feel free to email me anytime you want a personal recommendation. The Stonfo is a great bobbin holder, but I might rank it a little below the Rite. And of course my current favorite right now is the C&F. But I don't usually push that as it's kind of pricey. OH wait... did you get the adjustable tension one from Stonfo? If so, I have one but haven't tried it yet. It's the Stonfo Elite Disc Drag that I've used off and on, that I rank just behind the Rite.

That fly with a red bead, silver chenille, with the natural peacock herl, you have a christmas tree with tinsel.
Ohhh... great call Lee! I think we'll do a streamer for the Christmas fly but I could see a nice looking nymph looking like a Christmas tree. :-)
Simple is great, especially when it works!
Tie this in size 2 or 4 on an easier to use hook (model perfect bend), use a plastic bead & leave out the weighting wire , & this would look pretty nice placed in clear Christmas ornament. Maybe add a fluorescent red or chartreuse hot spot at either or both ends.
That's a great idea. I'm hoping to try making some ornaments this year, but I was thinking I would need to do it with streamers to have something big and flashy enough to be seen more than a foot away. But maybe a big one of these guys would do the trick too. :-)

Neat little fly Matt, and as you said the color combinations are endless. I'm thinking maybe the black band behind the bead might be kind of cool, never can tell what fish are thinking. I really like the idea of the chenille on the spools. Keep the good stuff coming.
Appreciate it Dave! And yeah, the black band might actually be a cool touch. Or... use a red or pink thread and make it a true hot spot. Like you said, who knows what might fool the fish any given day. :-)

Nice tie Matt, that is a great pattern. I made some up last week that were the opposite of what you tied. I used the crystal flash for the body and the peacock hurl for the collar. They worked pretty good as well. Almost caught the cycle.
That sounds like a great day Michael! I've got one I fish that's almost the opposite of this as well. I'll do maybe a pink flashy body, with a herl thorax that's just a bit bigger than the body.
I like this one Matt. I will try with different color a glass bead fluorocarbon leader instead of wire.
Oh yeah William. Get crazy with the beads! I wish I had a purple bead; I think that would look pretty good.
Great wintertime pattern. Excellent presentation as usual. I wonder if it would work underneath the ice. Since ice fishing is on my to do list this year, now so is this fly. Continued blessings my friend.

Hahaha! I've resorted to buying a couple of those big plastic compartmented boxes and just putting a bunch of flies in them and hoping I can remember what they are. :-)
Oh man, and I just filled up my midge box. This pattern is actually very similar to a cased caddis pattern that I tie. Like you said, it's versatile. I've never seen cactus chennile in spools or in a variety pack before. Is that through Hareline? Very cool pattern. Keep up the great work.

Nice one Matt. Reminds me of those caddis larva patterns by George Daniels and Lance Egan that Fly Tyer featured a few years ago. How many carpets did you "pluck" when you heard about antron? I did, tried to match some egg sacks on some bugs that were about to lay them. Looking forward to that carpet dry video. Thanks Matt :o)
Ha! You should have seen me the other day. I went out to the garage where I had some old rugs. And to the rabbit pen where I had some scrap remnants. And even to the corner of my guest bedroom to see if I could pluck some usable fibers. I think I found some for the "Close Carpet" dry fly. But most of my rugs are a boring tan. I need something with a little color! I'm heading out of town for the weekend but hope to get this new pattern tied up next week. :-)
