yeah. but the soil was basic and fertilizer was basic. they just paid someone. for trellis thats it.
When you go to do your strawberry bed, also put in asparagus, they work well together as the asparagus goes first then Peter out as the strawberries take off, 2 perennial crops in the space of 1. 😊
She never did get to the harvesting stage with asparagus. Great idea. 👍
They can add and mushrooms with strawberries. Maybe Wine Cap Mushrooms (King Stropharia)

We inherited a few raspberry "volunteers" in our backyard from a berry patch that the previous owners had tried to eliminate after they grew tired of doing raspberry jam. Three errant volunteers rapidly grew into parallel 20ft hedge. Thank God they are thornless! The kids crawl between the rows and call it the Unicorn Forest, eating their way from the inside out! Summer memories!

You’re right. Railroad ties were “a thing” in the 70’s. I remember we had them in our yard in Alabama as a child as well
Here in British Columbia also.
It was the precursor to pressure-treated wood.

I love watching Benjamin's face as he looks at things that are being built and even removed. The things he is learning is so awesome as your property emerges into new aspects of your dreams. This will offer him the opportunity to learn early that when you have a dream, you can get it to flourish with dedication and hard work.
I love the look for the stain against the white fence in the background. I think the contrast there will aid in the locating the berries once the plants produce those beautiful sweet fruits. Everything is really shaping up and coming together on your new property. Cannot wait to see what the Hartley will look like with the existing yard. Grew up in Boise in the 70’s and we had railroad ties edging every bed around our entire house! 😂
Born and raised and still here in Boise too! Railroad ties were definitely used here a lot!
We weren’t allowed to use RR ties in our veggie beds at the school I gardened at due to those ties having been sprayed with creosote (thanks soccermom).
My parents had railroad ties too but since they came from the an independent garden center they were not spray with anything. They worked great! My mother loved them.
People used what ever they could get their hands on. With those though I believe that a lot of people didn't realize the danger in them regarding the environment.
I watch a channel in Texas where she bought a property with cactus,bush, rock and developed it. I can't remember the rock name. But she made a raised bed around her house. Then made a raised bed around a grouping of trees and then made one to plant a beautiful tree, dark leaves and flowers, with a bright sweet potatoes vine. Its an amazing gift to be able to look out and see a vision and bring it together like Laura and this lady. I also found it fascinating how her free range chickens would go and dig up the actual sweet potatoes and eat away at them. And the vine came back like a perennial.

Love watching Benjamin. It is truly amazing how much he observes and then puts into practice. He is so focused for his age. I was wondering if you realized that very soon he will most probably surpass yours and Aaron's hopes and dreams of what he will become!!! He is part loving and happy Laura and part analytic and focused Aaron all wrapped into one incredible child!!!

Oh this was such a magical addition to your garden. I can imagine Samantha Grace and Benjamin running around these beds. Playing and collecting fruit. You can't buy this life for your kids one can only create it with love. Some of the best of my childhood memories are collecting fruit and veggies from our garden and playing and climbing trees. You are giving your kids the best life. God bless you guys.

It seems that you are so very healthy and it got me to thinking that this is because of your upbringing, eating from your own gardens (your parents and now yours) and being "in" nature, getting all the goodness from your environment, developing a strong immune system. My grandfather had an easy system for cutting raspberry canes. He would use three different colors of ties. One color for new canes, a second color for year old canes and a third color for two year old canes. Every fall he would cut down the oldest canes leaving 2/3 of the canes for next years crop. Ties can be loosely tied yarn, twist ties from bread wrappers or zip ties. Tie it on the stalk near the bottom where you will be cutting them off, that way you know which stalks to cut off every year. Since most raspberries and blackberries grow on new and one year old stalks this system works great. You will be thinning by one third every year. You can keep track of your year colors in a garden notebook. Be sure and choose bright colors that are easy to see so you can find them at the end of fall.
I love your descriptions on how you’ve done the construction on the raised bed and what materials you’ve used. It makes this more than a video about plants but also how you designed this barren land to make it specific for your needs. I can’t wait to see these crops once they have matured and start producing fruit. Thank you Laura for sharing your personal knowledge and experience with us. I know I speak for everyone when I say , “WE LOVE YOU”.
Our heritage raspberries were always so aggressive and took over any space you gave it!! But boy! Were those berries just the BEST!!! Gorgeous set up! Nice job Eddie and Tricia!! That garden looks so elegant and manicured. The black trimmings add lots of class. I would leave the walkways black rather than planting grass over them. They provide great contrast once the plants show their greenery and would be less work in mowing and edging.
Can't wait to see them grow and watch Benjamin and Aaron harvesting them.

I learn a a lot from you guys BUT the most beneficial thing that has not only enhanced my gardening, but made me excited about going out each morning, is finding beautiful ways to grow. Seeing your new raspberry beds is another shot in the arm for my garden. The black wood is gorgeous out there on the huge area. And you also, explain how to do things on a smaller scale like mine. I now have added flowers to my vegetable garden and consider how the whole thing will look even just bare. This makes it so much more enticing to get out in there and work. Thank you for your over the top gorgeous gardens and beds and structures and pots and watering methods. NO way I can do all that but I learn everytime from you without you ever once acting like yours is gorgeous and so much better than my little attempt. Congrats on combining a warm & friendly welcome into your garden with no uppityness and showing me how to consider the beauty as important also. The best down-to-earth show around while maintaining a Disney World perfection for us to admire.

They were a thing in the 70s in Atlanta. I used them around a pool as a retaining wall with roses planted at the top of the wall. Was pretty back in the day.
I’m putting in raspberries and this video really helped me decide how, thank you for all you do, I have learned so much from you & Aaron and Benjamin is so cute wanting to help and learn gardening.

Raspberry garden set up looks stunning Laura! You are such an inspiration for us. All the comments make me feel as if I am living in 70s as we use railroad ties in our garden 😬 when we started our garden in backyard, it seem to be a good way to partition the garden area and it definitely kept bermuda grass away from my flower beds. As much as I like the natural colored wood stains, I LOVE the black!!
And I considered using railroad ties for a garden project and was told by the guy at the lumberyard that it wasn't a very good idea, because of the treatment used on those.. Hadn't really given it much thought prior.. So I decided on something different, just for the peace of mind..
If she starts complaining about hard water stains on the black stain, my head'll explode, lol.

I guess they're banking on them growing so big that you won't really see the staining.. But since they have drip, the only staining would be on the lower parts, if they do any more manual watering.
@@Bamboo4U2 Eh, they have drip in place so hard water stains won't be an issue. Dust/wind damage over time will definitely be an issue though! LOL

Yeah, they treat those railroad ties with Creosote. Bad stuff.
Railroad ties were the wood pallets of the late 70's early 80's. Cheap or free and multi functional. They're still everywhere at my parents house 😂😂

Using old railroad ties for landscaping projects such as retaining walls, garden edging, and raised garden beds was once very common practice, and it was even regarded as a good environmental strategy. As old railroad lines became repurposed as hiking and biking trails, repurposing the huge railroad ties in landscape work seemed like a good way to use the wood.
But most railroad ties are soaked with creosote to give them longevity, and in your landscape, they pose a health hazard as the chemical gradually leaches into the soil. As with many outmoded practices we learned from our grandparents or parents (like spraying dandelions with herbicide), we now understand that railroad ties are an environmental danger.
The Dangers of Creosote
The main issue with railroad ties is the presence of creosote. Although an effective preservative against decay and insect damage, the substance has been banned for residential use due to its toxicity. Creosote is an oily by-product of the distillation of coal tar. Creosote treatment of railroad ties allows long-term preservation of the wood, which must obviously stand up to heavy pressure and harsh weather conditions.
Is there a good similar substitute that has the same look?
@@greenpalmTX you can always try recycled redwood fencing by laminating them together. Redwood resists pest and rot and can be dyed.
Former owner of our house had used very old railroad ties to line our driveway. When we noticed that termites flying out in the spring from them we had them taken away by a disposal company!

Our retaining wall is/was RxR ties, I say was and is because it is rotting and falling down, so now we have a huge job to get it fixed :(
One of the biggest battles in my yard, can't afford to hire help and can't do it all alone... its really overwhelming to me.
I removed the RxR ties that I could but there are lots left, the pieces that are left I can not remove alone, and there is a stump in the way of removing more and setting up the new bricks.
I don't want to make the wall move forward either because that will mess with my raised bed veggie garden :(
I really wish the original owner had not used RxR ties to make this wall, all those years ago....

Very excited to see the strawberry patch you mentioned come together. A friend of mine has a raise circular bed in her front yard 10ft diameter and has strawberries in it- it is the most glorious spot in her garden. Strawberries aren’t a super showy crop but the production! You could go out every single day to harvest there and still go in with a basket full of strawberries. I’m sure you’re excited not only for the food production but for all the memories you’re going to build with Benjamin and Samantha. I’m sure Benjamin will soon claim the strawberry beds as his garden😂

As with all of your projects, I love this! The raspberry beds look fabulous, and the black just adds to their beauty. Raspberries are my favorite. I can see Benjamin rooting through the brambles to sneak his berries much like he does strawberries.
I have the best memories when it comes to raspberries! I used to spend a lot of time in my mom's patch just snacking away 😁 I definitely have my own patch and boy, are they a vigorous plant to grow!! I always give my rogue canes away in the springtime. It feels like a nice tradition trying to spread the joy of gardening! 😁 Excited for you! Our house in Iowa had railroad ties around all the beds when we moved in.
They are rotting and we've been replacing them with concrete block walls. I am so glad we don't need to run irrigation lines!

They did a beautiful job on those beds, always loved as a child having blackberry patches and even as an adult looked forward to picking my dads blackberry bushes clean in Central Point Oregon, definitely want to add some Marionberrys as well..

I’m a 90’s kid and I remember my Mom using railroad ties in the garden:). I love how aesthetically pleasing these raspberry beds are! I want to start a raspberry patch now:)
Thanks for the walk down memory lane. My parents house in NY had railroad ties in the landscaping, and a huge patch of raspberries where we had to find creative ways to reach the berries in the middle. 😊

Laura, I have a section of my raised bed garden planted with raspberries. We decided to put sheet metal down deeper than the raised bed wood in order to deter the plants from growing into the lawn. The metal extends up about an inch above the soil level so we can grow dahlias and green beans around the adjacent corner. Good luck. My kids love them, it is an all you can eat buffet in the fall. :)

This looks amazing, Laura! Could you (or any of your viewers!) speak to painted/stained materials when planting organically? I get so confused about people who say paints leach into the soil from painted lumber, etc. is it anything you take into consideration when creating planting beds like this one? I personally love those raspberry beds and would love to do something similar but haven’t due to this issue alone. Thank you! Love your channel!
