I was just looking back on your 2016 aloe bonsai video. At the end of the video you created a collage of pictures to show how you wanted your bonsai to look. I can actually see those pictures taking shape now!
I've often kept aloe but often got rid of the lager woody ones in favour of a couple of pups but since last summer I have been treating one as you describe and it's starting to look rather interesting, THANKYOU. I've watched lots of your videos and love them. Xx so here I go!!
yeah, agree with many of the others; your Aloe bonsai R.O.C.K.S. . . . awesome! Think 20 years, or so, from now; Thanks for educating viewers & subscribers through the risks you take to create these lovely beauties, & you have several. Peace!!
@@TheBonsaiZone i guess you're right; it's challenging to imagine this Aloe bonsai in 20 yrs.; However, the imagination is so greatly influenced by our dreams & visualizations & thus far your own visuals/dreams have materialized several creative beauties - very unique ones - it seems likely the Aloe will be outstanding . . . we can already see the "tree" emerging. Possibly the 'leaves' will grow smaller(??) And it has to flower sometime(??) . . . Your own patience with the creativity is great to see & is therapeutic also. Thanks again!
Neither did I until I was sent those pictures and videos by a Joshua from South Africa! Here is the playlist and you can see his Aloe in the first video... ruclips.net/p/PLQouTWwmTQox3TDcMc5DXCCH-BoS2oN8G
Your aloe sure looks healthy! Every time I go in my side yard and see the aloes planted there I think of The Bonsai Zone. The Vietnam style Ficus microcarpa looked 'sharp' after you trimmed it. Good work! I would like to see the aerial roots wrapping around the pillar instead of in a large clump beneath the pot.
he nigel have you considered to make a aloe arborescens bonsai its also known as tree aloe. i have seen some very nice pictures where the stem of this aloe looked similar to a yucca tree
It's amazing how simply reducing the branches (on the ficus) back to points that show more movement instantly gives the impression of age. Nice job, I hope to get that skill one day. Also where do you get the watering nozzle for the 2 liter bottles? It seems to work very well.
Do you see the foliage reducing in time Nigel? Must admit I was sceptical when I first saw your earlier aloe vids, but that is looking very interesting 👍👏
The cap was sent to me by Mandy in Australia. You can buy them on line now, just google "bottle cap watering top" or you can drill small holes in the existing cap. www.reddit.com/r/gardening/comments/21l8cy/bottle_caps_that_turn_a_water_bottle_into_a/
You may have covered this in old videos for the aloe, but to grow the Aloe as a bonsai, what kind of substrate did you use? I see that there are blends for different type of trees, whether evergreen type, or conifer type, or maybe even a tropical type. Since Aloe is a succulent, which kind would you recommend?
I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. I sift the soil to remove the fine particles and dust. I fertilize with a very small amount of water soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer. I mist the Aloe twice a day and only water it when the soil has almost completely dried out.
I feed with a small pinch of 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer in my 2 liter watering bottle or can. I fertilize every time I water. This is about every 2 to 3 days on average with the Aloe, if the sun is shining. On cloudy days no watering is required. I mist the Aloe at least twice a day. The feed I use is Plant Prod 20-20-20 with micro nutrients. www.plantprod.com/product/plant-prod-20-20-20-classic/
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone great video. I love how the aloe it coming on. Thinking I might turn my ficus into one. Would that be classed as an accent? You’ve got so many atypical bonsai which I love seeing. With your temple style ficus, I’m looking forward to see how you’ll maintain those roots coming through the bottom of the pot after a root prune. I’m sure I’ve seen you repot it before but can’t remember. My guess is that you’d just let them rebuild?
I could not get to work on my aloe, the old growth just kept dying back although very strong growth and nice roots. Pruning it and letting it produce new branches doesn't work either, they simply fall off and start over again.
Interesting, I'll see how these branches react, they may do the same? I did have good success with the middle vertical shoot, hopefully the others will follow.
So you do or can eat these Aloe vera meat? how old is the bonsai? greetz from the netherlands. I started bonsai still not know how seed can come out haha
Your Aloe Vera Bonsai looks awesome,
Mr. Nigel.
Thank you, it has come a long way!
I’m amazed by the growth of this aloe. It’s so beautiful for such a young and unique planting.
Thank you, it has grown a lot in 3 years, I can't wait to see it in the future!
That white pot looks really good, and has a nice contrast with the green of the leaves and the brown/dark grey of the trunks
Thank you, yes I like the pot with the Aloe, I was so glad to find a nice one!
Both looking good again and boy, have those roots fattened up underneath 😊they're going strong. Off to part 2 👍😊💖
Yes, I think the Aloe roots are slowly filling up that new larger pot. I noticed that I need to water it a little more often these days!
Nigel, I fully appreciate your Blackbird T-Shirt! Just when I thought you couldn't get any cooler!

Good to hear, i hope it continues to look even better over the upcoming years!
Nice video Nigel ! Here in South of France those Aloe plants (A. arborescens I believe) are in full bloom right now
It must be a nice sight, the only thing blooming here are snowmen!

I love your aloe vera bonsai, definitely one I'd like to make.
Thank you Joshua, I hope you give it a try, they are a very interesting plant!
How big was yours when you started it?
I had no idea aloe could be pruned like that! ... welp now i know plans for my aloe hehe
I'm really liking the Aloe, I can only imagine what it will look like in several years time!
It looks great! I’ve never seen an Aloe Vera Bonsai.
Thanks Jourell, I think I've created a monster! It's getting larger every year!
I had never think that an aloe can be a good bonsai, thanks

I really want to get a Quiver tree going as a bonsai, I'll have to wait until I get the greenhouse done so I have room!
Foist
Very nice FOIST!
Gro Bonsai, you are Foist today, congratulations!
Quick draw foister!
😄 My thumb was in exactly the right place when the notification popped up 🤘
I have to say that after a year in USA My Ficuses in Poland get nice and bushy a lot of prouning. All of them survived :) Have a nice day!
Good to hear, someone took good care of them!
The aloe vera looks just like your hair Nigel! 😂😍
It does! Lol.
My first ever plant was a aloe from my brother, yours looks magnificent Nigel!
Thank you Andrew, the Aloe is growing really well!
Cool update! Thanks!

You can get them on line or you can drill fine holes in a bottle top, both work well! I think they are sold in 6 packs.

Yes, the leaf size is definitely reducing, I have one in a larger pot and the leaves are at least twice as big! Thanks!
Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone awesome, it’s looking cool
Wonderful, as always :)
Thank you Marysol, the Aloe is getting large!
Looking good ! Did they ever put on some growth since the last time you worked on them.
Yes, they have been doing well, the Aloe loves the sunshine and grows really fast on sunny days!
i've read where the gel is good for propergating harmone,,,(sp)

Yes, you can eat the fleshy part inside, and it is good. the Aloe is 3 1/2 years old now!
🌳✂️👍
Hello Jan!
What is the mix of your soil at this current?
I am using 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface. Local ingredients that seem to work well.
I think this is Aloe arborescens...
Thanks!
@@TheBonsaiZone Ever thought of Aloe ramosissima or dichotoma? Not enough work to do?
Good morning Nigel, could you please upload the files to Thingiverse for the Vietnam Style Pot :o)
My hard drive crashed and I lost the 3D printing models. I will be re modelling one for the future, stay tuned for more.
I still don't think that is a tree!
Maybe not, but I like it!
Your hair is a bonsai? 🤔
As a matter of fact it is. He's mentioned that he uses the clip and grow method.
I love Nigels hair ( please excuse me, Mrs Saunders!) ...the first thing i thought seeing this was, ' this tree is Nigels Spirit Bonsai!'
@@dk2614 amazing
It's styled to match my Aloe bonsai!
