Thanks for watching Everyone! Looks like I've got some work ahead of me before we get this thing flying - nothing big, but right now getting some parts has a long lead time.
I thought you said you were purchasing this aircraft for $20,000.00 was this correct? it seems awfully low priced for such a plane in such very good condition. ??
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking Truly a amazing purchase! I actually enjoyed this entire video, every minute of it actually. I grew up on a private airstrip 35-WI / Barkers Airstrip, Wisconsin, My Father was a A&P mech. and I spent much of my youth from the early 1970's into the mid 80's working with my dad pulling inspection covers, cleaning parts, vacuuming cabins etc, bucking rivets etc. So for me your video was a great trip down memory lane. I was also very impressed by your A&E mech. and how he was so willing to have you present during the pre-purchase inspection, and how he explained everything to you as he did. I found it all very informative and interesting.
There is nothing more interesting to me than watching a competent craftsperson exercising their knowledge/skillset. What a fascinating insight into aviation maintenance. Huge kudos to your inspector for his patience and willingness to talk you (and us!) through the process. He needs his own channel! This was completely engrossing - thanks for the great long edit.
Please don't shy away from long videos on this channel (at least from my perspective) ... this was a fascinating video, and awesome to see the inspection process in such detail.
As a pilot and a budding home cook I’ve watched your cooking videos for a few years. I love that you have moved into aviation content and love the long video! Keep it up Glen! As someone that is looking in the future to buy a share this is super useful!
It's amazing that you could buy a decent, flyable 172 for $20,000 CAD, when the price of a new 172 is $460,000 CAD. Well done! I never saw an AME doing a Cessna inspection before. There is a lot to inspect, but it is reassuring that the inspection is thorough.
I actually watched this from start to finish. Like all technical stuff is fascinating to me. Working on my own bikes, having worked for companies that build machines to produce tires, steam turbines, drying and moisturing surfaces from paper to steel for coating them. Planning on one day building new hifi-speakers.... So, yes: it was fascinating to watch this inspection!
As an AMT that works on regional airliners in the US, I love looking at the simplicity of these older Cessnas. No hydraulics, No turbines, Not too many electrical wires to shoot when troubleshooting, and especially no Lav toilets to service or maintain 😂 These planes look like a dream to work on. I would switch to GA if the money was right.
You never want to lose this A&P...specially if he's an IA. He is very knowledgeable and I say this after watching this only 15 or so minutes...beleive me I know...!
Man, I'm really excited about this channel.... I don't necessarily even care about planes, I'll just watch Glen do anything 😎 PS. The GoPro looks fine to me 😁
Buying an airplane is exciting and scary at the same time. But you’re doing it right. As a 40+ year professional pilot and Piper owner I just love this kind of stuff. Now, Glen - bring it down to Morristown NJ and I’ll treat you to a Hudson River flight followed by a nice Italian dinner - the only legal restaurants here are Italian! 😉
It's amazing how "simplistic" an airplane is, and basically just attaching an engine to a frame with some pulleys to fly! Very cool and amazing to see. Thanks for the inside look!
I'm about to purchase a 1962 172C and I believe a majority of this info will be quite useful! Thanks! I have another week to see how many times I can watch this but this is definitely the best video I come across so far!
I have no use for airplane knowledge in my life. I probably will never have that kind of use, as my life trajectory never has me ending up with this kind of disposable income, but dammit, I'mma nerd and I like your charisma. Long videos of nitty gritty details....I'mma gonna watch this and I'mma gonna watch all these!
Despite being a bit of an avgeek I said "oh 50+ minutes, I'm not going to watch all that." Boy was I wrong. Chris is amazing and his just clear but to the point explanations are fantastic.
Just listening to this video makes me want to come home to Canada. The competence of the inspector and the affect in which it is delivered is so reassuringly Canadian.
Fascinating and fun video!!! I’ve been watching you for years! I’m so incredibly happy for you and this exciting adventure restoring this beautiful plane! I’m so impressed by how great it looked during the inspection. I can already envision what it might look like when you’re done. Well deserved after all the work you do! Congratulations from Massachusetts! 😁
I have absolutely no interest in buying an airplane. But by gum I watched this video in its entirety and found it so interesting. I can’t wait to see where this journey ends. Thanks Glen!!!
Ugh! You warned me! I thought I’d watch a couple chapters, and next thing it’s “see you all soon”. Seriously, this was quite interesting. The process was cool to learn about.
I watched the entirety of this video and it was absolutely fascinating from multiple perspectives. The plane seems to be in phenomenal shape even though I know absolutely nothing about planes. The fact that it's that old, and everything internally looks that good is mind boggling, even with the knowledge that it had been refreshed at some point in its life. Congrats on the purchase Glen, can't wait to see more content on this!
I am in the process of obtaining my A&P and my short term goal is to buy a small airplane. My challenge is to gained experience on pricing Cessnas like yours. This video gave me a very good perspective of what it goes behind when purchase an aircraft.
Glen, I am disabled and unfortunately that has kept me from pursuing a pilot's license. However, I love flying. Although my aviation knowledge is very limited I have found this entire video fascinating! I have enjoyed your cooking videos for years and I am really looking forward to future videos on this channel also.
Just before your AME started disassembling the plane, you said, “And so, uh... here we go... for... pullin’ it apart.” But I could tell what you were THINKING was, “I really, REALLY hope this plane passes inspection.” I LOVE subtext in a scene. But this was real life, which makes it even JUICIER!
I watched the entire thing... when you got to the part about asking if you should buy it or not I thought it was only about half way through! Great video!
A side project for you Glen, put a lapel mic on that guy and have him go through a pre-purchase inspection on some other plane and you add some graphics to highlight what he's looking for and maybe throw an image of 'good' vs. 'bad' at the items in question. Your friend the AME gets an excellent promotional video for his work and you've got another side job to generate money for your airplane hobby. Or use your 9 hours of video and do that, but having him mic'ed would be best because he was putting an awful lot of great information out there, but it was very hard to hear/understand because he was just getting picked up by your area microphone. [And if you can document enough of the work like this, hey; it becomes a business expense- at least here in the States.]
Excellent channel Glen! This is what the internet should be, real insight and useful information without the clickbaiting or the fake reality tv drama. Keep it up!!! I just wish I could find as good a deal on an airplane. Also, while talking money might seem crass, it is very useful to know actual costs so thanks for that as well.
This is one of the most interesting informative videos I have ever watched, considering you have edited 8 hours down to 1 the continuity was brilliant.
Looks like she’s been hangar kept most of her life. I’m kind of in the camp of preserving such a find as is, as much as possible. I like the simple paint scheme. A lot of people like that old 6 cylinder. If I found a 1960ish VW bug in that shape I maybe would convert it to 12 volts. I am envious Glen. I’ll keep watching!
Absolutely in love with this channel already! You're already so enjoyable to watch regardless what what you do Glen plus this is about airplanes, my absolute favorite thing in the world. I couldn't ask for more :D
I have been watching your cooking show for years. When you open with “Hi Freinds” I feel like a friend. I find it is interesting to see what my You Tube Friend’s do besides what I see on the main channel. I am a plane guy who got his A+P in the states and took flying lessons. I used my knowledge to restore classic cars and never did complete my flight lessons. Congrats.
Oh how i love long YT videos!! short ones are ok but as somebody who watches a lot of YT videos it can feel a lot like A.D.D. TV (attention deficit disorder television!!) the longer the better for me and i'm not a flyer or tinkerer of things mechanical but if the subject matter is made interesting by nice people with a good personality, it could be an in depth talk about paint drying but id still watch it : ) THank you Glen for starting this journey and taking us along for the ride!!
i bought a 172 that had been sitting for 18 years. 1967H with a constant speed prop and 180hp lyc. Had to replace the prop hub due to a bad serial. Flown it all over the states in the past 5 years and its a blast
Glen enjoy the journey! Just sold my 172D (N2754U) back in March after 20 years of ownership. O-360, Constant speed prop. & Bush STOL conversion amongst other goodies! Lots of great adventures & trips! Great that your getting your hands dirty, I did the same. Again enjoy this wonderful time of your life!!!
This is fascinating and easily watching it all. Great to see and hear a mechanic who is so knowledgeable and experienced. Looking forward to seeing more
No knowledge about this but certainly interesting. Never realized you actual took the plane apart for old plane inspections... Not done on vehicles but I suppose the greater the investment etc...
G'day and greetings from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 that was a bit of a thing this morning I build one of these 172 it was RV and had a 8' wing span you don't see many of these, great plane glad I found you on the RUclips regards John
Chris is awesome. Great work with the GoPro regardless of obvious "pitter patter' challenges. It stands to reason a very thorough inspection, prebuy or preflight, is required as you're taking a metal box into the air; which in turn could fail and plummet to the earth at your or others detriment. Like the meat slicer ad, safety first.
Yes, this has lbeen a very through annual . You are blessed to haavew this IA and of course, the aircraft.... I'll take all you've got for $16,000 a piece !!! Best of luck with the plane ! I'll keep watching. Last Question... does he do NAvions...? Lol !

What drew you to planes and flying, Glen? Any good stories or philosophy? I'd love to hear about it in future episodes.

Glen, as a retired engineer, I found the video absolutely fascinating. I’ve watched twice already. Thanks for the content and keep up the good work!
An hour of in depth aircraft goodness. Love hearing Chris talk about this stuff.
Great video. I'm also so happy your mechanic was happy to have you record and he took the time to talk things through.
It’s a pleasure to watch a professional at work. He’s an A&P mechanic that I certainly would trust to inspect and work on a plane of mine too.
This is so unbelievable juicy and jam-packed full of information.

Yeah i'll take my $25000 cad 172B and an ipad with foreflight thank you. Better useful load than a 172 SP anyway
I know nothing about planes, but still found this very interesting. So excited for you Glen!
