Can’t wait to see the progress/journey & videos! I have a Sonex I’m almost done building and most of an RV-9 kit in storage. If you want to fly sooner rather than later, you’ve made the right choice. :-) Now you just have to survive the onslaught of people who are going to tell you not to fly a 172 off anything but pavement due to the nose gear/firewall strength. 😝
Well, I don't know a whole lot about airplanes, but I watched this from start to finish. Glen, you're so damn good at putting a video together that grabs and *keeps* your attention. It's almost like you know what you're doing! ;) Cheers, from a Nova Scotian Glen and Friends fan!
As a geek listening to the first video shows us how much potential this channel has. Glen, can we have a mix of technical chat for us av geeks and then some of your secret sauce in explaining things to the noobs.
Yes, it's a completely different world for me, too, and I appreciate having some real-world comparison markers to orient myself. I always hate it when RUclipsrs go "I got this piece of machinery for cheap" without naming an actual price - cheap compared to what? A new computer, a new car, a new house?
Save up for a STOL kit Glen!!! You’ll get off of a sandbar in no time, and the kits are usually pretty cheap. I’m sure you’ll find a AME-S willing to work for dry aged beef and beer too 😂 I went to school originally for it and can vouch that they aren’t too involved of a project, something you could enjoy learning and lending a hand on. Also worth saying, from a couple in our 20s, my partner and I appreciate that you and Julie share so many of your journeys and hobbies on RUclips. We have a really similar set of interests (wanting a northern Canada adventure plane, keg BBQs, and all) and can’t help but look up to you guys as role models. Neither of us have anyone in our lives to look up to in that regard, so the effort of making these videos definitely doesn’t go unappreciated. Thanks for showing us it’s possible, and that it’s something to have fun working towards 😊 Cheers!
My first plane was a 1958 Cessna Skylane, purchased in 1962. I converted the fuselage into a ski carrier and used it to ferry myself and friends from Long Island to Vermont every weekend I could for skiing of course. In 1965, I bought the first of my seven Mooney's and used each of them for business and pleasure. I even had one of them flown to Belgium where I met up with it and then flew all over Europe for a fabulous vacation. There's nothing like flying your own plane. You'll love it.
Congratulations Glen! That’s an awesome deal! I’ve been watching Glen and Friends for a few years and am grateful for the time and energy you and Julie put into your productions. I’m 67 and bought a 172G in 2017 and wish I had done it earlier. It’s a blast! Looking forward to watching your restoration journey and wishing you the best. I hope you plan to fly to Oshkosh some year in the not to distant future . Looking forward to meeting you there if so.
How exciting for you!! My father-in-law trained at the WInnipeg Flying Club in that era. I just checked his logbook(he passed away a few years ago) and it turns out that he logged many hours in your new baby. What a small world! Enjoy!!
No way!!!! Are there any pictures of him in or near or around the plane? I've been trying to find out more info from that era - but it seems the Winnipeg Flying club went down in flames in the early 2000s.
@@GlensHangar It looks like he was getting his instrument endorsement in the summer of 1963 when he was flying MVU. I haven't seen any photos of it but I will keep my eyes open for some. Sadly, he kept very few photos from his youth. I won't have an opportunity to look again for a little while. Enjoy that little baby! I bet she's fun to fly!! One flight has the notation "comm dead". I bet that was fun at night.... He had a very bad stutter so not having a radio might have been a relief.
I feel like a lot of people share exactly this combo. Aviation and food. Me and many of my friends included. I was so excited when I heard about his new channel
I had no idea planes where that "cheap" I was expecting you to say low 6 figures. This is why money shouldn't be crass, as well as makes it harder for companies to lowball certain employees. As you can tell know nothing about aircraft but looking forward to it, especially as both your story telling is excellent and could only dream of camping in such a away.
I could listen to you talk about anything. Something about your delivery is so interesting and relaxing whether it's cooking, history or now aviation. Thank you!

I found this channel thru the chocolate dump cake with browned butter frosting video! Delighted that you purchased the plane. The plane is worth restoring. Quite a few people have bought rvs, trailers vintage homes, etc. to rescue. The journey and learning is worth it.
I am always glad to find another project RUclips series. This should be great. Not a pilot, but, I was in Civil Air Patrol and got my introductory flight lessons while in C.A.P. I have always dreamed of getting my pilot's license.
I admire your decision to talk about the financial specifics. I agree it can seem a bit crass to talk about money, but sometimes that reluctance can be really unhelpful to people trying to understand the hidden costs of a new hobby.
So glad my wife found you guys here too! Loving your cooking channel already for years now! This plane journey is awesome! Going to watch all videos in chronological order 👍🏻
Shared this video with friends of mine who own a plane. They actually found a home in an airport community that they completely rehabbed. It was his dream to be able to store his plane in his garage and taxi from his home to the runway. You remind me of him. Hard working down to earth and realistic.
I've been in a full glass panel 172. As impressive as it was I love the simplicity your's has. The interior also. I'm not a pilot and I'm not knowledgeable about much. I do come from a family with a huge a aviation background. I've been fascinated with airplanes for almost half a century. Particularly the Pietenpol. I discovered the 172 a few years ago and got hooked on the idea of having one. I've decided it's time to make things happen. It's not going to be fast but I've got to start somewhere and research seems where to. Love the channel and the content, thanks for sharing. You're filling a serious gap in information on RUclips.
I love the fact that you want to "camp" with the aircraft. I am jealous, because I can only afford to camp in a caravan. Hope you enjoy every low and slow trip.
Took my flying lessons in a Cessna 172 ,in 1973 at the fort Richardson Alaska and if I had money,I’d like a carbon cub, but this plane would be wonderful
Great price. I jumped on to check prices when you suggested and the cheapest 172 listed was $220,000 Australian. Yes, that is the correct number of zeros. Clearly the market has shifted somewhat since you bought your plane. Really good find and looking forward to settling in to watch this playlist.
Wow, that's so much cheaper than I would have guessed! Only a little more than I spent on the used car I bought back in February of this year. I'm really interested in hearing more about the financial side of fixing this thing up!
Holy Crap Glen. Just when I thought you couldn't surprise me any more, you show yet another talent. I'm a commercial pilot flying medevac out of Lancaster, PA. Love your videos and I'm excited to watch these now too. Please keep up the great work!!
Just floored me on that price! I've had a passing interest and small knowledge of planes like this for a while... I live in interior Alaska, its part of the culture, more or less depending on how many pilots you know or what your hobbies are... I digress... My best guess(without looking at anything on the internet) was its a ~$60K plane.. in USD. I was thinking $60k reasonable, and you were gonna say around $40k for a steal.. WOW. I ever find a flyable 172B for $16k and I'm liable to sell everything I have to, to get it... Hell, even for an Unflyable(complete) plane. From everything we can see here, it is a seriously Solid craft, Extremely good find regaurdless of the price, thats just a HUGE bonus! Congratulations Glen! Looking forward to following this project. :)
Cheapest 172 I found on Trade-A-Plane was $35k and needed a little TLC, but at least had ADS-B Out. Cheapest 182 I found was $74.5k, but had 2000 hours on the airframe, a slick paint job, but most importantly, no ADS-B. I did see a Cessna t-50 from 1943 for only $10k. Certainly needed some work, certainly needs updated avionics and ADS-B, but Holy crimeny... For a pre-war warbird (technically...) that's pretty awesome! If I had the money for a plane at all... I'd be all over that!
I have been watching your cooking channel for many years, and I still watch pretty much every single video you make. Can't wait to get to know about you from a different perspective!
If the pre-buy works out, you've made a great choice. I bought a 1957 172 a year ago and have the same mission you have. I've been very happy with the 0-300. The plane is light, takes off quickly and lands short. Enjoy!
Pilot here as well, fly for DHL and can’t wait to see how this channel evolves. Love his cooking channel and now this… Bonus!! Combine his love of cooking and cinematography with airplanes and that could make for some amazing videos! Would love to see maybe some tales on the $100 hamburger, it’s a pilot thing, or flying to remote places in the Yukon and cooking over an open fire… literally the sky’s the limit! (Pun intended! 😂 )
I love this, and I'm excited to see how everything goes for you! I hope that interior is able to find a good, new home (and you're able to get a bit of money back for your overhaul budget), because it looks great. I love the color!
Yay! Hello, Glen, on YOUR NEW channel! I ALWAYS watch, 'Glen and Friends', but don't ever comment... Just had to say, 'hello', and tell you how excited I am to see where you fly with this! Ha! - Mark P.
I didn't know you were into aviation! Cooking and aircraft renovations are the main stuff I watch on RUclips😁 When I heard "Hello friends," I knew it sounded familiar.
What a great deal! I like your idea of the extended baggage and no back seats. I have quite a but of time in a 172 with the 180hp Superhawk conversion. That will make this the perfect plane for what you are wanting it to do. Looking forward to the videos ahead!
i got my 172, 1959 model, for 18K cad, and after 2 years working on it, no oil leaks , remove old radios, soundproofing all around and just sold it last year for 36k, now i have a 182P for 60k in parts, soon to be finish ... good luck
This is an amazing deal! Upgrading to a glass panel, LED landing lights, hi power strobes, gap seals, etc, new interior, and you'll have a better-than-new plane at a very great price point.
Omg. How did I only find this channel now!! Iv been watching glen and friends for years now thought I had a love of cooking but think it’s just a love of glen 😂 and how well you make your videos. I am so keen to watch this. Gonna sit up all night and catch up!! Can I get a clear prop for glen. 👌👌
Whaaaaat! Screaming deal. Jealous. I’d have to consider that deal if I can across it. Knowing the AME that last scope then engine too. What a blessing, enjoy!!!
Great video #2 on all involved with plane ownershipTook lessons and flew a couple of solo cross countries in San Francisco Bay Area (out of Hayward Executive and Palo Alto airports) in ‘91. A house got in the way (purchased not hit) of continuing and the rental 152’s were usually thrashed. If you fly into SF area, Hayward Exec is a nice place to land. Flight following around here is like listening to an auctioneer! Will continue on watching. Thanks
I have a fear of heights but am absolutely in awe of flying and hopefully can muster up some courage to learn how to fly a plane like this. Looking forward to being on this journey with you, captain!
I'm in no way shape or form an aircraft enthusiast, but I'm excited to see this come together! I googled for pictures of this model polished with some painted accents and you're spot on, gonna look fantastic!
That's an insane deal. Unheard of nowadays quite frankly. Can't wait to see how this goes! One of my favourite RUclips personalities and my favourite interest colliding, and all in my province too (until the travels begin).
Hi Glen just started watching your vlog and as an owner of a 172M, I'm looking forward to watching your progress. If I may throw in my two cents, I think you might have grossly under estimated your upgrading costs. Unless you have an A&P who is doing the work for free(or very cheaply), you are doing the work and he'll sign it off, I think you'll find things are going to be much more expensive than you predicted. You mentioned a glass cockpit, new interior, not to mention any unforeseen repairs, I think you might be surprised. I don't mean to rain on your parade, but just giving you another OPINION. Good luck on your project. PS. I looked into an 036 to replace my current 032, and I'm sure your looking at somewhere in the 35k plus neighborhood.
You make some good points - but I've got it covered. We did an extensive pre-buy inspection and plotted out what was needed now, what was needed in a 2 year time frame and what would be great upgrades if the budget allowed. From that we've plotted out what I can do myself, what I can do myself under supervision, and what Chris (my AME) has to do. Since Chris is a longtime family friend who is probably more excited than me at the prospect of doing some of these upgrades, he's on board at a great rate. I just have to work my schedule around his, which is why some stuff will be done 'out of order' or 'in the wrong order' to those who do this for a living The engine upgrade is a 70K+ that will wait a few years to happen... probably never happening, which is fine because the engine is low hours and checks out fine. But the glass cockpit will happen, and again I've worked out a great deal with a supplier that will surprisingly get it into the plane within the budget. I'll be doing a lot of grunt work myself, really getting my hands dirty and learning a lot about this plane.
Just found your site and I’m completely supportive of this endeavor! You laid out your objectives and described perfectly how this aircraft, assuming a good pre buy, would fulfill you and your wife’s objectives. Stay the course and don’t pay any attention to the naysayers. Live your dream and I’ll live mine vicariously through yours. Can’t wait to see how this endeavor plays out. Thanks for sharing.
Great airplane choice one of my favorites. A 180 hp engine will make it a climber, and if I remember correctly, the fastback is a slightly faster aircraft. Good luck, I’ll be watching.
Just had this channel recommended to me by RUclips, so I'm about 1 year behind and catching up, but that was a great deal you got for what you want to do. Looking forward to watching all the other episodes. I have always been interested in building a Zenair CH 801 SD as a utility aircraft, but your way appears to be a better way to go.
Well done. My first airplane was a 1958 Cessna 172 - loved the mechanical flaps and difficult to stall. I got my license in 1976 and the 172 a year later. Looking forward to your videos on this project.
I'm very impressed Glen. Unless there is a serious problem, you would be a fool to walk away. For the short field stuff, you may want to look at getting micro vortex generators installed.
My used to have a Cessna 182RG, former state police plane. I do miss that plane. I still have the aviation bug from that plane, just not the aviation money. Someday I will hopefully be able to get a plane.
A dual Garmin G5 paired with a GTN 750 and ADS-B compliant XPDR would clean that panel up nicely. The O-300 will be nice and smooth! I've wrenched on a bunch of similar birds. Looks like you snagged a decent project!
Of COURSE you’re a pilot. Absolutely astounding my friend. I’ll hopefully be a pilot one day in the future as well. Gotta save up the money for flight school and all that.
So excited for this channel! I'm a 31 year old with dreams of being a pilot. Maybe this will help give me the push to just go ahead and chase my dreams. Congrats Glen and Julie! What a great adventure this will be :)
I’m really excited for you about this new adventure you’re undertaking! I’ll definitely be following along (long time subscriber of your cooking channel)
Hi Glen, Love the format of this video series! I'm a 51 year old newbie and am planning on getting my PPL in the new year (I'm already a paramotor pilot). Loved that you shared the inspection part. Keep it up and looking forward to the new videos in November.
I once was half owner of a Piper PA28. My advice to you is to take the absolute worst estimate of cost of ownership... and multiply by 10! Every time mechanics looked at the plane they found at least $5K of stuff that needed to be fixed. Often a lot more.
I saw that video about you and an aiplane (used to see you in cooking)...so I subscribe... as I am a former civilian S&R (Search and Rescue) in Quebec... we made S&R with 172 very often as they are reliable and easy to maintain.
This just popped up as a suggested video for me. I was a little surprised as I don't watch aviation videos normally. Then I spotted the channel name - I'm here from your cooking channel and I'm subscribing. This sounds like a great project and I wish you well.
Subscribed! I'm so happy to discover another aviation project to follow, and from a friendly Canuck to boot. Maybe you'll make it down to OSH in 2022? Folks who follow you like me can seek you out to say hi (along with Steve from FlightChops)! Oh, and Glen - I almost forgot to mention that my dad owned a 1955 C180 for years that he had stripped down to bare polished metal. I have right seat time and some photos too. Just beware that it is very labor-intensive to go that route, not just to get it down to bare aluminum, but to keep it clean and shiny.
Oh man! I am so excited for you! I did not know that you’re a pilot! Very cool. I look forward to seeing this come together. Hope you make a few videos as well once you and Jules are up and flying. I’d love to see Northern Ontario and the rest of the adventures from the sky! Plus the boots on the ground perspective. Good campfire cooking. Fishing maybe. Either way, this is very cool and fun. 😀
Thanks for watching Everyone! Regular uploads on this channel won't start until November - but I was just so excited to share this first video!
This is great! I got to my last 15 hours for my license, and ran out of money due to life. I shall live vicariously through you. :)
Thanks, Glen!

Oh my, what a bird. I hope the walk through works out, she seems beautiful.
Go for it! As long as it passes your pre-purchase inspection. It’s a great bargain for $20k. Can’t wait to see more content.
I love this, and I'm excited to see how everything goes for you! I hope that interior is able to find a good, new home (and you're able to get a bit of money back for your overhaul budget), because it looks great. I love the color!
Here's hoping the pre-purchase inspection doesn't hold any nasty surprises. Best of luck Glen, looking forward to yours and Julie's adventures! 👍
YESS!!!! my fav cooking show is now a plane show! haha.. I have a 64 172E.. but its sat since 1989.
What a great deal! I like your idea of the extended baggage and no back seats. I have quite a but of time in a 172 with the 180hp Superhawk conversion. That will make this the perfect plane for what you are wanting it to do. Looking forward to the videos ahead!
i got my 172, 1959 model, for 18K cad, and after 2 years working on it, no oil leaks , remove old radios, soundproofing all around and just sold it last year for 36k, now i have a 182P for 60k in parts, soon to be finish ... good luck
I wish you and your wife all the luck in the world on this new endeavor.
This is not the crossover I was expecting, but this is exciting. What a deal (assuming there's nothing wonky in the pre-buy). Good luck!
I just have to work my schedule around his, which is why some stuff will be done 'out of order' or 'in the wrong order' to those who do this for a living
The engine upgrade is a 70K+ that will wait a few years to happen... probably never happening, which is fine because the engine is low hours and checks out fine.
WAIT! you're the rootbeer guy! I KNEW I saw you somewhere haha. Congrats on the plane and I cant wait to follow this build!
This is awesome glen. I know nothing about planes but excited to follow along. Congrats!(hopefully)
Looking forward to this, especially the trips you'll share with us in the future.
Love your cooking channel and was both surprised and looking forward to this one. Already loving what I see here.
honestly can't wait for this series.. thanks Glen for providing this content and I'm excited for plane info and to see the oncoming adventures
This channel is going to make me a bit homesick for flying having grown up with a Cessna.
Glen this is absolutely my dream. Thank you for the inspiration!
Working on the PPL! Well, the medical for now haha.
I'm SO excited for this series!! I love the way you present things!!
Awesome video Glen. Can't wait to come along
How did I miss that this man cooks AND flies? I'm gonna love following this project! Couldn't subscribe fast enough
Thanks for the heads up on subbing!
Winnipeg for the win. tha ks for the great series
The trips you will take! Oh my 💚🌞
Looks like an interesting project. Hope it goes better than expected. 🛩
Congratulations! I'm looking forward to future installments. Thank you for sharing.
Grateful for you to have found a nice cheap plane to share with us.
After you stated the price, I literally gave u a round of applause man! I'm so jealous. Yet, I'm sold.. Subscribed! lol
