  • Panasonic G7/G70 and GX80/GX85 are both great cameras that are relatively cheap and deliver good videos and still images. Although they are pretty much the same in terms of image quality, they are quite different in their features. In this Video I compare the G7 and the GX80 after owning each for over a year now.

    Nice video. I just picked up the gx85. It was pretty much a perfectly featured camera for my needs. The ibis is so good, and combined with the 4k ability, at this price point, is almost criminal. I think it is one of the best buys in photography right now.

    I owned in the past both.. first the G7 and after a while the GX80..
    G7 the only complain was no stabilization, every video was shaky..but i preferred the ergonomics much more.
    Gx80 was not right at my hands and that's why i sold it.. but in terms of specs i think it's the best budget 4k camera for video/photos in the market.

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  6 лет назад +3

      Yes, I probably forgot to mention the AF/MF switch that is also a plus for the G7 ergonomics wise.

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 6 лет назад +4

    The big plus for the G7 for me is the increased number of physical controls, including a drive mode dial at the top and a number of extra Fn buttons. The big drawback is the shutter and sensor. The sensor you covered in the video but the shutter is not only noticeably louder but must be switched to Auto or Electronic shutter in order to avoid shutter shock at certain commonly-used shutter speeds and with most lenses. The Auto function is very good actually and almost always chooses the best shutter for the circumstances, apart perhaps when there is a fast moving object passing through the frame

      Hello, they should not be very different in terms of image quality. G85 has the same sensor as GX80, without low pass filter, so maybe it is a bit sharper, but not by much. The biggest difference is the IBIS. It's such a good feature an the newer Panasonic cameras that the G7 is missing!

    Nice video! Is the g7 small enough to fit an a jacket pocket for street photography? And also, how does the battery life of the gx80 compare to the g7?

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  6 лет назад

      G7 is already quite bigger than the GX80. For bigger pockets in a jacket it may fit, but I would prefer GX80 for that. Paired with a pancake it is a compact package. Batterylife on GX80 is a bit worse than G7 but since you can charge the GX80 via USB, the GX80 lasts longer if you charge it on the go. I put it on charge every time I am in the car during trips.

    Nice comparison! Do you have any opinion on the video quality of the GX85 when shot in 1080 rather than 4K? Thanks!

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  6 лет назад

      Thank you! 4k vs 1080 is a big difference, but 4k downscaled to 1080 is a bit cleaner than recorded in 1080. And you can crop and still have good quality. For longer recordings you have to be aware of the huge amount of storage space that 4k needs. If I don't need to deliver 4k or don't want to crop in post, I shoot in 1080.

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  6 лет назад

      What speedbooster do you have? I think with some you can't control aperture in camera and others can. On Metabones you can change to in camera aperture control by pressing the aperture lever on the speedbooster.

    • @kalleankaa7536
      @kalleankaa7536 4 года назад

      Hmm.
      Im using the sigma art lens 18-35 mm with a viltrox ef-m2ii. And my aperture from te camera works fine.
      But if i toggle the aperture control on the speedboooster i lose aperture control in body.
      Turning off and on fixed it.

      I got the 14-140 with the G7. GX80 was body only. The 14-140mm is very versatile, but of course you have to make some compromises in image quality. Inn good light conditions it produces good results, but indoors and in low light situations you need faster lenses, preferably around F1.7. Also 14mm was often not wide enough for me especially with the additional crop in 4k on G7 and GX80. If I had to choose again, I would rather take a 12-60 as an allrounder.

    Your GX80 has two interesting lenses, one the 20 mil (which I have), and the other, I believe the Laowa 7.5 mil (which I am considering). Have you used a particular technique with the 20 to overcome the focus hunting issue when shooting video, and also, how do you rate the 7.5 mil for street video work? Thanks Tea for the clip. You provide the most useful info with the least amount of facial expressions LOL.

    • @TeaJayPhotography
      @TeaJayPhotography  6 лет назад +2

      The 20mm is kind of love and hate. It's super sharp and compact but af is slow and for comfortable manual focusing it is too small and has focus by wire, which i don't like for MF. I will replace it with a 25mm sooner or later, but don't know which one yet. The LAOWA is great for video. The field of view is huge but you have to be aware of the camera movements or you will get some serious warping effect. When walking you should use a gimbal or steadycam.
