I had a similar breakthrough many years ago after listening to a Russian dialect tape (look, I said it was many years ago, ok?). I realized that if you take John Lennon's voice, and instead of placing it forward, you put it back in your throat where Russians tend to speak from, boom - you get Ringo. Hours of fun!

It does seem like British English speakers hold their mouths tighter when speaking than American English speakers do. I noticed that sometimes I can watch a person speaking with the sound off and immediately tell if they are British rather than American.
