I'm from Toronto and am a recovering addict. Just to let everyone know there are many resources to turn your life around regardless of your situation. One thing that needs to be recognized is mental health among homeless people and drug addicts. Many of them do not believe they have it in them to turn their lives around but I know first hand that there are food banks, free meals, detox centres, governement funded rehabs and sober living houses and appartments as well as employment essentials programs. And on welfare and disability you can get furniture start ups around 900 dollars, basic dental and medical coverage for medication... The list goes on. Canada is among some of the top countries as far as rehabilitation for drug and alcohol addictions. I don't believe these people in active addiction or alcoholism choose this life. I believe they fail to find the courage in themselves to create a new life. Many suffer from post traumatic stress disorder or some kind of mental health issues as well as diseases aquired from daily drug use and lifestyle like Hepatitis or Hiv. It's an ongoing problem but be happy you voted Liberal because things are swinging in the right direction as far as funding for these rehabs and institutions.
This guy lives on Wellesley. Decent guy. He works at temp agency. Hard worker.
Really great video!
This has to be one of the best examples of a man simply trying to get by. The system needs to lend out a helping hand. Another gem by maketreks. Keep doing what you're doing!
As always, keep up the good work.
Song is Boadicea by Enya (original), not The Fugees!
Very intelligent too
I'm a homeless visual journalist in Northern California. Homeless providers love to quote that it costs local municipalities $40k a year to care for a homeless person. That would get you a handful of corner apartments where I currently report out of:-)
you are absoulutely right.
Hey guys if you don't mind me pointing out, the link to your facebook page in the video description is broken, for me at least. Keep up the great work!
thats a great idea. i think the only problem with that is the NIMBY philosophy that most people practice, and defeating that is going to be difficult. very interesting indeed
I like the idea of tax credits, the property owner would have to be creative about it to cut down on the negative PR. Have a mandatory drug screening policy, stipulations in the clause if the tenant is unruley and not with the program, anything the fellow residents at ease. But it's a great point, when you keep the poor and unsuccessful wrangled together like a cast like system, what should we expect but more of the same.
This gentleamn makes great points...Specially the one if you took 1 homeless person an gave them an apartment in the sorrounding buildings that they are building..We recently had half a billion dollrs to give away on POWERBALL...But we dont have for the homelss...I magine all the people in america ...Just took S1 an donated it..For a homeless person
There's a lot of Steven's out here on the streets. When your addicted to drugs with a support network and home your under the radar. On the streets your life is laid bare.
correction: that would be the first link, the second link is working fine
Homeless people have such good beards.
Policymakers don't seem to look at the long term or complete picture. They see only this years finances. Giving money to get homeless people off the street and treatment programs to help them drop their dependencies works to reduce overall crime. The savings outweigh the costs but you have to look 5 years down the line.
Selfish people complain about spending taxes this way, but they fail to see it's actually in their best interest.
I'm judging the video by the words the homeless man used. Can you imagine being a 40+ yr old man saying that one reason he doesn't feel like getting a job is because he lives in a housing complex with other bums who don't want to work...this is something an 18 yr old might say.
I don't think he needs help. He wants everything handed down to him.
I get upset because most poeple automatically assume that homeless people drink heavily and do drugs. Not all of them do. I have met a few who I helped out because they didn't
This could never work. People that work also do crimes as well, just on a different level. Rich and poor...crime exists just as much. Get a job, live your life by minding your own business...and avoid the crime.
I have a disability (paraplegia) since i was 19 Im now 32 and have to get out of bed every morning to go to work like everyone else. This guy chooses to live this way and has no idea about struggle and determination. FEEL SORRY for me common!!!!!!
Depends why you are homeless. Here in Vancouver their are a lot of homeless people that are mentally handicapped. We need to get them the help they need as a society. If you 'Can't find a job', or your a junkie, I don't think the tax payers should take care of those homeless people. I work 45 hours a week at a job that any able bodied person can do, why can't they? Start at the bottom and work your way up. Stop looking for handouts. The less we give the more they get.
I about blew my coffee laughing at his comment "Where they going to get ambition living with broke people?" Ummmm....Maybe they should NOT be looking outward but INWARD at their own failures and realize THEY are their own problem.
Sometimes there’s no ambition left. That’s just the reality
What is the song?
The Fugees - Ready or Not
Obama also created a mandatory healthcare program that business owners like myself will have to layoff some people to afford it. I am a small business with no healthcare coverage because its to costly now i have to get it or pay a fine. Healthcare needed an overhaul but not like this now two to three more families may be put in this predicament
You gotta shuffle up those memes. This is a good idea. But it doesn't sufficiently address addiction treatment.
There are homeless people in Sweden.
ya know
He needs clean conscience, it can't be that he's responsible for what his life looks like, can it?
The Fugees - Ready Or Not
A Message from Toronto's Underprivileged : our first video here is a message from Toronto's underprivileged
People are like he wants everything for himself well ya that's because he probably hasn't had anything for himself ever!!! Poor guy!!!
not trying to be mean but its his fault he is on the streets.
You didn't understand me, that's what I was saying too ;)
if you have never been poor or homeless be quiet shame on you for judging no one is god tomorrow could be your day
Obama created the Hardest Hit Fund resource where struggling homeowners could turn for help! Tell your friends and family to take advantage of the program. More information at Help Share The Word . org
;(
and for the guy that is a paraplgic shame on you tomorrow you could wake up expecting to have a job but you find out that you have been replaced with someone who doesnt have your issues how you pay fo rent etc soon you would be right beside him in soup kitchen
I'm sorry, but that's just rubbish. I've had pathological neighbours my whole life and they're very social, so I've heard millions of conversations between poor people. One thing they all have in common: belief that they're better than the rest and that everything should be given to them. I even once met a homeless man who was disgusted that some people believe he should get a job!
There's always some job out there. So just quit whining and get your shit together.
I'm not sure what video you watched but this guy sounds like another typical 'victim status' personality type. He says he doesn't want to work if all the bums around him don't work? Huh...what the hell does that have to do with anything. You need to work to save money and get away from all those bums. He says welfare isn't enough money. Of course not, he isn't doing anything productive with his life to make a decent living. This bum has no solutions except MORE MORE MORE GIMME!
Maybe you have earned everything you have, but as this man said, you don't know what he has been through. Everyone is different, just because you are getting along with life and doing just fine, doesn't mean everything is going to. He could of had really bad problems growing up, and just had a messed up life which put him in a hole. When you are homeless and have a problem, who's going to hire you? Nobody. Learn to be more open minded and caring, instead of being ignorant.
You seem to have taken this video way too literally and did not understand what he was saying. This is unfortunate. Open your mind sir.
hahaha
He sure does have a lot of excuses.
