Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega Saturn vs Xbox Series S) Real Hardware Comparison

- A side-by-side comparison between the Sega Saturn and Xbox Series S using the game Virtua Fighter 2.
Note: The Xbox Series S is running Virtua Fighter 2 from the Xbox 360 through backward compatibility.
It's really annoying having to justify myself here, but...
Comparisons are not about fairness or unfairness. The purpose of this video is not to belittle the Saturn version-quite the opposite. The reason the video title says Xbox Series S instead of Xbox 360 is that my video titles always refer to the hardware running the games, not the software versions.
If I wanted to, I could run Virtua Fighter 2 on Xbox 360 hardware, and in that case, the video would be called Sega Saturn vs Xbox 360. But the game is running on an Xbox Series S, so I cannot title the video Sega Saturn vs Xbox 360 because when Virtua Fighter 2 runs on an Xbox 360, it runs at 720p, whereas on an Xbox Series S, it runs at 1440p.
My intention is not to deceive anyone. That’s why, instead of starting the video with the game’s intro, I show the Xbox Series S interface, which, when launching an Xbox 360 game through backward compatibility, displays the Xbox 360 logo.
Therefore, the video title is correct! And yes, it's the Xbox 360 version. However, many Xbox 360 games run better on Xbox One or Xbox Series, whether through higher resolution, more stable FPS, faster loading times, or improved textures.
Understand that playing an Xbox 360 game on an actual Xbox 360 is not the same as playing an Xbox 360 game on an Xbox One or Xbox Series.
My videos are about the hardware running the games and how the software behaves on that hardware. So please understand that I will always title my videos based on the hardware, not the software, okay?
And once again, comparisons are not about fairness or unfairness. The video is not meant to ridicule the Saturn version-quite the opposite. If you can’t see that, the problem is not on my end.
The Saturn version is amazing. The fact that it's technically inferior doesn’t mean anything, since the Saturn itself is technically inferior to the Xbox. However, the goal of the video is to show that despite sacrifices like switching 3D backgrounds to 2D, the Saturn version is still very close to the arcade original.
We’re talking about a 1995 version on a 1994 console, ported from an arcade board released in 1993 that cost around $15,000. Can you grasp that? Can you comprehend porting a game from $15,000 hardware to a $300 console? If you can’t, then that’s your problem, so don’t create an issue where there isn’t one!
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with comparing the Sega Saturn to the Xbox Series S.
Well said.
I don't think there was anything other than plaudits at the time of Virtua Fighter 2's release on the Saturn, it was a tremendous feat of programming.
Unfortunately, those that were never of that generation to experience Virtua Fighter 2 drop on arcades or console for the first time, can't really fully grasp or appreciate what jaw breaking innovation and technology this was, because they have been spoiled with pretty 3D as standard.
The game has clearly aged now, but it still looks, sounds and plays better than alot of today's fighters, tech for tech.
Boundaries stopped being pushed as soon as SEGA had to bow out of the arcade and console space.
But......Virtua Fighter is on its way back and I really hope it lives up to expectations and that SEGA have a resurgence off the back of it.
Gaming really does need a reset and a return to quality and innovation that was always a mantra of SEGA back then.

Is there really that much pushback. I was 100% expecting to see a model 2 binary recompile on Xbox vs a Saturn port from the 90s, and all the quality differences inherent therein.
Great job, I appreciate the micro-pauses to keep the animation, texturing, and modeling directly comparable side-by-side.
Saturn is the real winner for having that miracle port in the mid 90s
If the Saturn games/ports had the quality of Virtua Fighter 2 on the Saturn, maybe the future would have been different.
@@vcdecide well, Virtua Cop 1 and 2, Dead or Alive, Last Bronx, and to a lesser extent, Fighting Vipers, are all around the same level, talking about Model 2 ports.
Arcade games were losing steam by this point, it was great to have them, but what gamers were really looking for were deeper games like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and that ton of JRPGs that PS1 got.
@@bizarroeddie1 I agree that arcade games were losing ground to cinematic games; however, arcade fighting games were at their peak. The problem was that Sega's fighting games for the Saturn didn't offer the same kind of cinematic content that Namco's games did on the PlayStation, such as CG character endings, tons of unlockable characters, extra modes, and other features that extended the lifespan of the games compared to their arcade versions.
Take Sega Rally on the Saturn, for example. It's a great conversion, but having only three tracks and two cars is too little for a home version.
And although the Saturn didn't have any game on the level of Metal Gear Solid, it had Deep Fear, which was on par with Resident Evil 2, as well as several heavyweight JRPGs like Sakura Wars 1 and 2, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, and many others that were exclusive to Japan, which explains the console's success in Japan along with the fighting games.
@@vcdecide Eh, even then, the only real example of what you're talking about is Tekken. Most other namco arcade ports were direct and had the same modes as the Arcade ports coming from Sega Saturn. Sega's ultimate issue was more company mismanagement. during the 16 bit era, they spent too much time trying to rush new technology to the consumer market to get ahead of Nintendo, instead of JUST focusing on the Genesis. Then they put out the Saturn, which was insanely expensive at the time, and Sony undercut it with the $299 PSX. It was also easier to develop on, and more optimized for 3D games which was the trend the gaming market was moving towards. (which is ironic that Sega didn't develop the Saturn with this mind, since 100% of it's arcades at this time...were 3D)
Yeah and there is something magical about running a game in the console it was ment to be runned, rather than emulating that game in a machine 100 or 1000 times faster
That Saturn port never ceases to amaze me... Incredible job!
That saturn conversion still amazes me....one of the best fighting games ever too.Full screen Full speed at a time when Pal releases were generally letterboxed and considerably slower than their NTSC conterparts.Sega's finest hour on the Saturn by a mile.
I remember playing VF2 on the Sega Saturn at home after seeing the game at the arcades was so incredible!
No matter how much time has passed, this game will always hold a special place in my youth. I had the privelege of playing this when it came out in the arcades, then on Saturn. I haven't played the XBOX version but this video has convinced me that I need this game, alongside the new games that released. I'm so looking forward to the new Virtua Fighter and I'm so happy that a new generation is showing love and appreciation for this series. I feel like the series never truly got the flowers it deserves so I hope members of Team AM2 are inspired and proud of what they created. Thank you for this trip down memory lane.
I love how the textures look on the Saturn.
I'm struck by how spot on the character animations are, and how fluid the Saturn version looks. I was absolutely blown away by this in the arcades when it came out, and was so grateful to be playing such a faithful home port on my Saturn not a year or so later (along with Sega Rally). Still glad to have one parked in my games/media room to this day.
Xbox is arcade-perfect, not washed out and with some lower-resolution textures like PS2, so Xbox wins, but Saturn port obviously looks great and for the time it was an absolute knockout.
Sega worked wonders back in the day. Virtua Fighter 2 still looks amazing on Saturn. Brilliant port of a much more powerful arcade game!
Saturn version was the peak of that time, in terms of arcade ports to home systems.
Virtua Fighter 2 on the Sega Saturn was awesome looking very close to the infinitely more Arcade original on many accounts.
It used VDP2 very well for the floor and background graphics.
Shortly after came the Mega Drive version and after that I went right back to playing the Sega Saturn version.
Really shows just how close and good the Saturn game got when it had no right to be
I was playing the Saturn version 30 years ago and it was an absolute beast of a port. What AM2 pulled off was nothing short of amazing. It's great to be able to play the game on a modern Xbox too for those who never experienced it.
High resolution !
You can't truly appreciate the Saturn port unless you were alive and there in time. To see the most graphically impressive game at the arcade, at home was amazing. The only thing I could compare this to for people nowadays too young to be alive during the time is the "we have mcdonalds at home" meme, but you ACTUALLY have a McDonalds in your home.
Love these videos, they must take so much work to put tighter! I’m always especially nostalgic for the Saturn stuff 😊
Even though I’m a Tekken fan, I’ve always loved Virtua Fighter 2. Of course the Xbox will have the horsepower to easily run the game (better than) arcade perfect. But the Saturn version is also a very impressive port.
Loved VF2, Daytona and Fighting Vipers on the Saturn, but owning and replaying them on my Series X is bliss. Just wish VF 1 and Virtua Racing were on Xbox too, having these all in one place would be great.
It's incredible how the 2D sprite, scaling and rotation capabilities of Saturn can create such an outstanding illusion of a 3d environment. Next level skills 👌
It's used to even more impressive effect in Last Bronx. To the point where some of the backgrounds look straight up 3d rendered.
@@markauer8662 Last Bronx actually fooled me at first. I knew VF2, FV and FMM used 2D backgrounds, but LB had me thinking “how tf did they keep the background polys from the Model 2?”
I think these are the most graphically impressive games of the entire generation. N64 had some great effects and games that used them well, but there really wasn’t anything high-res, 60fps and as arcade-accurate as these AM2 Saturn fighting games. Yes FV and FMM weren’t high-res but made up for it with more lighting.
Love the Saturn. What a pity it didn't succeed.
We love your videos. Please keep up the great work.
Saturn is a beast, why isnt Sega not making a Fighting collection is beyond me
The arcade mirror against the conversion. XBOX360 doesn't even heat up with this, but Saturn holds its ground really well, making great use of its hardware to provide an accurate arcade experience. Saturn wins because the effort made in the conversion produced a game really close to the original in a hardware clearly inferior
Saturn is just impressive as hell.
Great Sega Saturn game !
I Dream with Virtua Fighter 3 for Sega Saturn😢😢😢
I didn't like my last comment but I needed to point this out. Wearing earphones its unbelievable that the Saturn a console from 1994 has crisp and clear sound quality. Which is amazing in comparison to a modern console from 2020 like the Xbox Series S. With this videos I feel that Sega Saturn has in the most part superior sound design to some of its rivals.
Such a beautiful BGM!!!!!So Great!
The saturns intro 🔥🔥
The Saturn port is amazing for its time, but I wonder if a version with dynamic lights and 3d backgrounds - especially that amazing bridge stage would be feasible while keeping hi-res mode and constant 60fps. Let us hope some skilled rom hacker can do that someday.
I'd say probably not - the Model 2 was chucking around a lot of polygons to make those backgrounds happen while the Saturn version had VDP2 doing its best to rotate a flat image for the background. Still an amazing port though.
I'm still amazed at how close the Saturn port was to the original. AM2 did an excellent job.
I really like how both versions look
it is incredible that the absense of illumination and goroud shading makes saturn character meshes better than the flat shated characters (with illumination and shadows) of 360 port
The Xbox version is Arcade perfect. The Saturn version is a superb conversion for the home console technology of the time. I have a Saturn and an Xbox and played Virtua fighter to death as a kid. I also have the Saturn version today and play it. It’s great
Sega Saturn holding up well against current gen hardware crazy to see.
An interesting comparison could be Tekken 3 and Virtua Fighter 2 real time intros.
I don't like the disrespect tekken fans gave Virtua fighter 6 when they got announced at the evil but the thing is though is that they don't got to like the game but you got to remember if it wasn't for Virtua fighter tekken and wouldn't even exist
Bons tempos.
The character voices are hideous on the Saturn version, but the music is closer to the arcade than the partially-botched VF1 tunes....
Am I imagining things, or does the Saturn version have better textures than the PS2 Sega Ages port?
yeah, the 2nd screen is the Xbox 360 port Virtua Fighter 2, but the arcade which is harder than the Saturn version
aguardando o próximo vídeo com Daytona USA
Obviously, the Series X is running the ARCADE VERSION 😂
Best version is XBOX360 2.1
I still keep my disc with Saturn's VF2 🎉
Take a bowl SEGA & the Saturn, in the right hands it is more than capable.
I you wasn’t born in the 80s you can’t comprehend how impressive this port was at its time - hell it’s impressive today!
I have the 360 one its great & the fighting viper ..too i think 🤔
I like the look of the Saturn version better.
Vida longa ao sega Saturn❤❤❤
On xbox is the arcade version
Is the Saturn version professionell deinterlaced to 50/60p, it look not like that, because the game is running in interlace mode?
The Xbox Series S (Xbox 360 backward compatible) version is really the model 2 arcade emulated. So it’s Saturn vs. arcade bumped up in resolution. The Saturn version is a miracle to look anywhere near as good as the arcade. I wish the Daytona USA port was this faithful. I have heard that AM2 was planning a high-res 60fps port for Daytona, but got pulled to other projects (such as VF2) and never finished optimizing it for the tricky Saturn hardware.😢
I think ps3 has that version with the blue background apart from that it's a good arcade port
The VF2 port for the Saturn isn't bad... But it definitely shows that Sega's machine wasn't as powerful as they claimed, since even though it was a game from the company itself, they couldn't offer a port 100% faithful to the original. And don't even mention the horrible VF1 port, which was even worse, full of glitches... The Model 2 was definitely on another level. 🤣😂😅👍
Saturn version is still very good!
Funny how on the intro in the Saturn version *yes, that version* the polygons start to break away just for a little Saturn fun touch in case you started to forget reality....
I do like the texture work on the Saturn port.
Why did you set the 360 to 2.1 and not the Saturn aswell?
Does it really matter for the purpose of the video?
Xbox serie s its a best, like arcade model 2 , but version sega Saturn was beatifull color RGB, man i miss analogue visual, 😅
I wonder which one is superior.....thank goodness because now I *well hopefully* will fiiiinally find my answer.....
I mean, you have an option to play it on modern platform, which is the xbox platform🙂
Saturn version of VF2 was far from arcade perfect, yet people call Dreamcast's VF3tb bad port. Weird.
Because the Saturn did an amazing job with incredibly weaker hardware. Meanwhile the Dreamcast was capable of higher polygon counts than the Model 3 and had was more powerful hardware, yet the textures were lower resolutions, background details were missing and characters had noticeably less polygons than the arcade.
@@Aki_Lesbrinco The term has nothing to do with system power, arcade perfect means the port is exactly the same as original and in this case VF3tb was A LOT closer.
Saturn's remastered cd music destroys the xbox arcade music...dont know why xbox didn't include remasted auido option
I don’t get it. How is it on the 360? As far as I know it was only ever on Saturn
No, there were ports for PC, Sega Genesis, PS2, PS3, X360 and iOS.
Brutal xbox!!
I understand the nostalgia towards the Saturn port but it's time to move on. Can't stand those washed out colors anymore so Xbox wins for me
PC version was ported later and looked better than Saturn one.
@foveon3x but not much better
@ Shading and character models looked much better.
I have the PC Port of this from Expert Software, along with Virtua Fighter PC (VF Remix) and I'd say it is superior to the XBone.
lol, no. The PC version is a port of the Saturn version with 2D backgrounds
@@rob4222 PC version is superior to Saturn port - it has more detailed character models and shading like orginal arcade. Plus it can benefit from texture filtering. Backgrounds are 2D in both versions. Only arcade had 3d backgrounds.
Saturn close to the arcade version ? Are you delusional ? do you hear yourself ?....the x series s easily trumps the saturn without breaking the slightest sweat.
@@Final_Fantasy_7 can you hear YOURSELF ? The Saturn uses hardware from 1994! 🙄
@Fatal1ty_v2_UK and virtua fighter 2 uses hardware from 1993 do hear yourself ?

Saturn = loser
Xbox = winner 🏆
