George's face after his dip in the canal was priceless, where is your ball? he looks puzzled as its in his mouth lol. He could have his own set of childrens story books.. lol
I met Country House Gent a few days ago on my local stretch, Leigh branch of the L&L canal. No ice or snow here at the moment but our fair share of rain. All the very best for the New Year and may the weather gods be with you.
32 degrees here ..... Dealing with the heat is a little unpleasant, not as bad as the cold though. Kayakers are probably training for the Devizies to Westminster canoe race held over the Easter weekend (about 130 miles in 2 days)
Your very laid back style, coupled with determination to deal with problems and then move on is very impressive.'Perseverance' is aptly named! Have a very Happy New Year.
Enjoying your vldeos, helps me not miss the UK so much even if it is -19C outside. Happy New year to the three of you, may the new year may Bounty-ful.
We're trying to limit the Bounties in this fresh new year! Which is why it's ironic that my father in law have us an emergency cache of Curly Wurly... there's more chocolate than coal in the boat! Happy New Year! M
Happy New Year Jo and Michael, you are indeed having fun with your winter weather. I liked Jo's footage when walking over the Braunston tunnel. It's NYE here today and I would give you a report on Sydney's New Years Eve fireworks tonight, but we will be nice and warm in bed asleep, it's a bit cold today and the sun is playing hide and seek with the clouds! I missed the move to Hillmorton so will go back and have a look. Cheers Guys!
Looks as if you need a 50-60 litre backpack, with full back system and hip belt, to make your grocery shopping easier. I only have a 400 metre walk to my local supermarket, but I use my backpack as a weeks supplies can easily be 20-30 lbs.
We actually have a big backpack, takes about 45 liters fully loaded... problem isn't carrying capacity, it's the mass of all those pickles and chocolate! Happy New Years! M
Michael: One thing, I will ask is why not use a Kitchen Rudder, which would provide much better control especially in tight spaces. Yes I know you have a Bow thruster.
Happy New Year from Canada. Have enjoyed your channel very much. While sitting out a blizzard here I reminisced about summer on the canal watching your vids.
The foggy countryside scenes were like watching a beautiful living oil painting. Beautiful. I keep finding myself unsubscribed. Must be something I do as I switch between watching you on the Apple TV, the iPad, the iPhone and I discover it on the laptop when I go to comment. Anyway all is well hand happy sailing into the New Year.
It is nice to see Jo's eyes again. What you need, plus more coal, is a bushel of tennis balls. Perhaps you could open a Patreon account for George? Grooming, tennis balls, tennis balls, and flea stuff will all add up. Maybe his own floating leash and boat hook, so he is easier to pull out of the water? Thanks for a heartwarming family video. God bless
Heh, we usually have a surplus of balls because of donations from people who meet him along the way. We’ve started buying him Chuckit balls made of rubber so he’s not wearing out his teeth, and that might be worth a Patreon some day! M
You seem to be buying a lot of thing`ys for you boat lately, never mind hope things pick up for you. Thank you for the vlog. Hope you had a nice Christmas, have a happy new year.
Just little things, there's always little maintenance issues and things that go missing mysteriously! It's way better than when we were first going and it was £1000 here and £1000 there! Happy New Year! M
If similar icebreaking comes up again, an interesting clip might be to show the cleared path left in your wake for a few moments. Ball toss lever thing was interesting. George seems quite content to be wet in winter, so how come the humans aren't? ;)
I've met a couple of people who've had no luck with them, nobody has yet said they're worth the money. We've got external antennas for the WiFi router, which should help if there's ever enough warm days in a row for me to install them! Thanks for cleaning your shits up! M
Hi another great video thanks. At one point you say you both can't leave your boat on it's own to go shopping, just wondering as I'm about to start cruising single handed why is this, dodgy area? weather? leaving the fire going?
Burr! Just wondering did you get to see the little canal section that the CRT reopened to make into a sort of floating museum? It is just past the last of the double locks, Cruising the Cut had shown a video of the CRT openin that up and I was wondering if it was finished.
Ted Gallucci I'll chip in here, if I may. It wasn't a CRT project at Hillmorton but rather a group of local enthusiasts and volunteers ("The Old Mortonians" if I recall correctly). The work is very much unfinished, I think it relies on money and progress from a new local housing development for support and that's still very much ongoing.
I see, well thank you for the update. I'm guessing it will take some time before it is finished. I do hope someone does an update at some point because it was an interesting project.
Hi grey mouser, I'm a veggie mate, but I did eat meat ounces and the farmers are great full for people hunting rabbits & wood Pidgin's because they consider them as vermin OK & they taste great.
We used to have fog/smog in the 70s-80s that was really really thick ( we had it a lot worse in earlier years but the clean air acts started to take effect and the early 80s was the last of the really good smogs ) to the point that you couldn't see your feet and if you stretched your arm out your hand was on the edge . So we had been out and on the way back the smog rolled in and dad said to me jump out the van and walk in front so we can find our way ( we had only got about half a mile to go ) I'd walked about 50 foot when I almost walked into a abandoned car in the middle of the road with the doors open , that was the first of 3 times dad ran me over !
Hah! My mom drove over my foot quite a few times, once in a whiteout. I think she thought it was a learning opportunity for me. My worst fog was in Canada; I inched on down the road for quite a while until I completely lost sight of anything, pulled off the road and stopped to wait it out. When it cleared I was in a field, a hundred feet off the road, and looking at a bewildered cow. I hate fog! M
Still there, we moored up and went back to Jo's parents for Christmas, now we're catching up on some work before moving on. Nice town, Rugby, though we're kind of at the edges of it. M
I remember that weather so well, growing up in a town next to the Grand Union canal. Somehow it still looks deceptively enticing on video . . brrrrr !!!!
It does do some additional damage, but so does sitting in the ice while it floes about around you. We try not to move except when it's beef thing, and the bow wave pushed in front of the boat does most of the actual breaking. M
I've thought about it, right up until just after I read an article a while back about someone fishing out a load of old guns and an unexploded grenade... M
Wow, I can see why that would probably be a turn off, but that grenade better on the end of a magnet string than scraping along the bottom of your boat, and of course you could always wait until the next gun amnesty lol X
These were apparently WWII era, probably multiply-amnestied. But I'd still rather have the hull between me and it than some air and a sudden sense of impending doom! M
For US viewers jubilee clip = hose clamp. Many places in the US are a LOT colder than your location. We have been a week with temperatures well below freezing and even colder overnight. We might get to above freezing by another 10 days. I can recall thick fog in the UK where hard to see a few metres ahead. Not fun to be boating in such conditions. Dave.
Oddly enough I found out that a Jubilee clip is a hose clamp with an actual brand name on it. It's like not all photocopiers are Xerox machines! And yeah, quite a record cold snap across much of the States. One might think the climate is changing! M
The last few min.'s of your vid started me laughing, my roommate is a sleep, I thought for sure he'd hear me. I looked thru all your Comments either Brits are to proper or its an American thing. I had to dry my eye's. Looking forward to more vid's , but don't freeze !!!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too. Different brands are of different quality and price. Also, not every marina sells the same ones. Still trying to find the one that suits us best! Jo
Mike: "George, look at you, you're soaking wet!" George: Yeah, so, what's your point? Mike: "Now I've got to dry you off, you disgusting soggy pooch." George: And...? Mike: "I'm just saying...what was that all about?" George: I got the ball didn't I? What duya want, a Descartes quote?
Hasn't so far, knock wood. Now that we've got the fire working it's not particularly cold on the boat, even when it's violently cold outside -- as it is again tonight. The key part is never running out of fuel!! M
Super😊 When was your birthday, Mike? (mine was on the 29th) Please stop playing with your balls near to the canal😑😮😂 Jo is right, that you should do such things in the field😆😅 George would be much happier too😊😁 All love, and best wishes for the new year, Claire and co, Berlin 😙😙😙
mad dogs and kayakyakers LURVE the fog. quite shocked M. you haven't coded a trainlike snow plough to sit on your prow.. all that training for naught ;)
Well, I start by smashing up the bits nearest us with a gaff (a pope with a metal tip), then we just push through with the boat. We don't move unless the ice is very thin (most of that trip it was slightly thicker than a piece of paper, on some places up to a millimeter or two), but when we do the mass of the boat does the work. M
So......12 days in the same place. What do y'all do all day, every day? Besides playing with balls, I mean. Yahtzee? Happy new year from Chestnut, IL where it's currently 7F and headed for -11F tomorrow night.
Eek! Now that's cold! We while away the time; I work on my never ending computer projects and Jo edits. George, well he mainly tries to convince us to provide either biscuits or ball throws! M
Hai there ice breakers hahaha, OOOHHHH and that poor dog hahahahahaha Got some prep now? for the next freze over. twixes bounty's etc etc Greetings from Holland,, Kitty
I wonder if way back in episode 1 Jo had a clue that she would be hiking all over Great Britain. It does seem like she never spends time actually riding on the boat. NEW WEIGHT LOSS PLAN!!! Just get a Narrowboat and a George!
Well you are clearly hardy and determined.😂 Judging by the resupply of bags of coal spread over the roof - you are in a coal consumption situation? Just for academic interest what are the solar panels doing at this time of year AND how many hours are you having to run the engine to charge the batteries?
We're definitely consuming coal, it's the only way to stay reliably warm! The solar is still helping, but the simple fact is we've been so overcast it's not by much. We're running the engine about every 3 days, right now. Thankfully with the Lithiums it's not for long, except on the days I forget to unplug my computer once it's charged! M
The background at 6:18 looks like an Impressionist painting. Fantastic mood! Really cool to see all the fog, actually.
I have such happy memories of Braunston so I'm loving this video.
Glad you like it! Braunston is lovely! M
I very rarely laugh out loud when watching something by myself. But, dripping wet George, still holding his ball, had me in kinks!
He's a character! M
Right cool video ! Thanks for posting. 👍👍👍🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks
This is an amazing way to live. I had no idea England had this canal system. I’m so glad to have this series to follow.
Welcome aboard! It’s a pretty great way of life and there are lots of us making vlogs too!
Short but sweet....
George's face after his dip in the canal was priceless, where is your ball? he looks puzzled as its in his mouth lol. He could have his own set of childrens story books.. lol
I've been thinking about doing a series, if I could just get him to wear costumes! M
Oh boy how did you dry and warm George after his swim, you made ME shiver!!!
Thorough toweling and a place by the fire! M
Great to watch your VLOGS from the comfort of home, even though I am getting withdrawal symptoms until back on the boat again!
I already get goose bumps from watching. :-)
It was pretty cold! Jo
I’m astounded by the amount of walking Jo does.
So am I, but she swears she prefers it. Her Mum does a lot of walking too, so maybe it's genetic! M
Thank you. Viewing from lockdown apartment in UAE- making one feeling homesick.
Lockdown is so hard. I hope you’re doing ok.
What a grand place for Christmas! Jo has the advantage of walking the towpath while the boat is cruising! Justification for extra candy! ;)
This is vet true! Jo
Glad you got through the cold weather. And i hope you all had a lovely Christmas.Keep the Vlogs coming...Thank you...xx
Thanks for watching. It’s a barmy 9 degrees today but I’m sure we’ll get more cold soon. Jo
Another good video.. You two ( sorry, three) make me smile. My boat's in Northwich, so please wave if you ever come past.
Will try to!! M
I met Country House Gent a few days ago on my local stretch, Leigh branch of the L&L canal. No ice or snow here at the moment but our fair share of rain. All the very best for the New Year and may the weather gods be with you.
It’s all part of the fun! Kevin is great, did you stop for a chat? Bet all that rain makes for a muddy tow path! Jo
32 degrees here ..... Dealing with the heat is a little unpleasant, not as bad as the cold though.
Kayakers are probably training for the Devizies to Westminster canoe race held over the Easter weekend (about 130 miles in 2 days)
The things you learn never existed! M
Lovely with all that snow. We are constantly mud-hopping. No frost, much rain....
It was lovely while it lasted. The towpath is all mud now! 😂
What a beautiful video! Thank you so very much for sharing! Happy New Year to you all.
Glad you liked it! Happy New Year! M
Your very laid back style, coupled with determination to deal with problems and then move on is very impressive.'Perseverance' is aptly named! Have a very Happy New Year.
Thank you! And Happy New Year! M
George is such a good boy, please give him a scratch for me :)
Will do! M
Hello there, enjoyable veiwing n Very interesting good camera work
Thank you for sharing your video cheers take care see you soon
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! M
Enjoying your vldeos, helps me not miss the UK so much even if it is -19C outside. Happy New year to the three of you, may the new year may Bounty-ful.

Got to luv that dog he his one cool dude.happy new yr to you all.
Cool, and often soaking wet! M
Happy New Year Jo and Michael, you are indeed having fun with your winter weather. I liked Jo's footage when walking over the Braunston tunnel. We'd report on the fireworks in Rugby, except it's sopping wet and we'll probably be in bed as well! M
Happy New Years, too!

Cell phone coverage wasn't a problem when I was there in summer 1978.
Haha, I imagine it wasn’t! 😀
Another great video, Happy New Year to you both ( and the dog ).
Thank you! Happy New Year to you too! M
Brrrr...looks pretty cold to me! We have had a bit of snow and ice, but nothing like you guys. Glad you were finally able to move. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you too! Jo
Happy New Year from Canada. Have enjoyed your channel very much. While sitting out a blizzard here I reminisced about summer on the canal watching your vids.
Happy New Year to you too! I am longing for spring time! Thanks for watching. Jo

Thank you. Happy New Year to you too! Jo
There you are in the snow and it's 80° here in SoCal, go inside and get warm😎
Show off! 😉! We lived in LA doe the whole of 2016 and I have to admit that the only think I miss is the sun! Jo
If similar icebreaking comes up again, an interesting clip might be to show the cleared path left in your wake for a few moments. Ball toss lever thing was interesting. George seems quite content to be wet in winter, so how come the humans aren't? ;)
Cause the humans lack a built-in fur coat! Famous for it! M
Yes George looks so miserable soaking wet in the middle of winter, sure he does!!
Beautiful, love the snowy foggy shots.
Oh, how long was the walk to the store? Sheesh, BBQ George is starting to sound appetizing.
I've met a couple of people who've had no luck with them, nobody has yet said they're worth the money. We've got external antennas for the WiFi router, which should help if there's ever enough warm days in a row for me to install them! Thanks for cleaning your shits up! M
Most welcome. Bad form to leave that stuff where children can use it as ammunition.
Or baboons! Plus George might be peckish! M
Can't remember if I ever showed you my Jack. Volume UP is helpful, if not: ruclips.net/video/RVlyjjUS7Yw/видео.html
Hi another great video thanks. At one point you say you both can't leave your boat on it's own to go shopping, just wondering as I'm about to start cruising single handed why is this, dodgy area? weather? leaving the fire going?
It is fine to leave the boat, not a dodgy area at all. We just don’t leave the dog and we couldn’t take him to Tesco! Jo
Burr! Just wondering did you get to see the little canal section that the CRT reopened to make into a sort of floating museum? It is just past the last of the double locks, Cruising the Cut had shown a video of the CRT openin that up and I was wondering if it was finished.

We didn’t even notice if I’m honest, the sun was about to go down and we were keen to push onto a mooringN sorry! Jo
I see, well thank you for the update. I'm guessing it will take some time before it is finished. I do hope someone does an update at some point because it was an interesting project.

Are you still at rugby I lived there for many years until I moved 4 years ago to cheshire hope you have a good cruise stay safe
Still there, we moored up and went back to Jo's parents for Christmas, now we're catching up on some work before moving on. Nice town, Rugby, though we're kind of at the edges of it. M
I remember that weather so well, growing up in a town next to the Grand Union canal. Somehow it still looks deceptively enticing on video . . brrrrr !!!!
We still had a great day cruising despite the fog! Not complaining and it didn’t take long to warm up! Jo
Hi, does cruising through the ice wear the blacking off the hull?
It does do some additional damage, but so does sitting in the ice while it floes about around you. We try not to move except when it's beef thing, and the bow wave pushed in front of the boat does most of the actual breaking. M
Hi, Just wondered while you are moored up, do you ever go magnet fishing? One person found 13 windlasses near the lock gates and a chimney.!

We'll try not to! ;-) M
Glad to see you managed to get the essentials from Daventry....Wine Gums :)
Sugar addiction is a serious thing! Jo
To be honest, I'm not really a sugar person. I don't generally eat cakes, desserts or chocolate, but I do love wine gums and midget gems :)
Cake, chocolate, soda, sweets, I love it all! Hmmm, I feel a New Years resolution coming on! Jo
To be fair, you do use up a lot of energy walking George along the towpath!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Noticed different types of coal delivered, any reason for that and which type/ brand do you prefer?
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you too. Different brands are of different quality and price. Also, not every marina sells the same ones. Still trying to find the one that suits us best! Jo
Don't worry. You're not alone. I call them Runny Babbits too! I don't know why though.......
Cause they run everywhere! And Babbitt! Great minds! M
Mike: "George, look at you, you're soaking wet!"
George: Yeah, so, what's your point?
Mike: "Now I've got to dry you off, you disgusting soggy pooch."
George: And...?
Mike: "I'm just saying...what was that all about?"
George: I got the ball didn't I? What duya want, a Descartes quote?
Haha, sound about right. Although I’m sure George would add ‘I’m bloody freezing’ at then end! Jo
I expect you're right, Jo; afterall you do know him better than me ;)
Anyway, Happy New Year to you both, best wishes for 2018.
Thanks from all of us, and Happy New Years! M
Braunston is so nice. How long did it take you to dry George? He must have been frozen. Happy new year, best wishes for 2018.
About ten minutes to towel, and an hour near the stove for good measure. He actually seemed to love it, the nut. Happy New Year to you as well! M
Does it ever get so cold that you need to leave the boat?
Hasn't so far, knock wood. Now that we've got the fire working it's not particularly cold on the boat, even when it's violently cold outside -- as it is again tonight. The key part is never running out of fuel!! M
Super😊
When was your birthday, Mike?
(mine was on the 29th)
Please stop playing with your balls near to the canal😑😮😂
Jo is right, that you should do such things in the field😆😅
George would be much happier too😊😁
All love, and best wishes for the new year,
Claire and co, Berlin 😙😙😙
The 16th, I'm a mid-month birthday boy. Who doesn't play with balls. Though he does throw them! Happy Birthday, and Happy New Years! M
Claire Papadatos you don't know me but my B day is the 29th also. Live in the U. S.
Sorry, mine was on the 29th😊
Do you need to have positioning lights (red and green) on a narrowboat?
Esther Kalkbrenner No. There’s no point, on a 20’ wide body of water. You do need a white running light at the bow at night.
You do need them on rivers.
And you can't travel at night in the canals.
Andreas Duess but not all narrowboats cruise on canals only. You would need them on rivers for sure
We have them for the rivers! Jo
Bloody machine😁
Ahh, autocorrect ... the bane of my existence! M
mad dogs and kayakyakers LURVE the fog.
quite shocked M. you haven't coded a trainlike snow plough to sit on your prow.. all that training for naught ;)
I've coded one lots in my mind, it's welding the damn thing that's beyond me! M
how do you break ice on a canal?
Hai there ice breakers hahaha, OOOHHHH and that poor dog hahahahahaha
Got some prep now?
for the next freze over.
twixes bounty's etc etc
Greetings from Holland,, Kitty
We're well stocked! Jo's dad got us emergency rations for Christmas! M
aahw great so next freze over you both and de dog wil be fine :D
Michael, we all agree, making Jo and George walk all the way is not nice. just joking
Cool videos, I like the video style and narration too. American and a Brit?
Americanadian and a Brit, yep! M
I wonder if way back in episode 1 Jo had a clue that she would be hiking all over Great Britain. It does seem like she never spends time actually riding on the boat. NEW WEIGHT LOSS PLAN!!! Just get a Narrowboat and a George!
She's a natural walker! Takes after her Mum! M
Well you are clearly hardy and determined.😂 Judging by the resupply of bags of coal spread over the roof - you are in a coal consumption situation? Just for academic interest what are the solar panels doing at this time of year AND how many hours are you having to run the engine to charge the batteries?

why could only one of you leave the boat to go shopping?
George doesn't like being left alone, and he prefers being home and dry to sitting with me outside a Tescos! M
Headlines: Crazy American/Canadian, chasing sheep, while looking for King George and talking about playing with balls...
Technically I wasn't so much chasing sheep as terrorizing them! ;-) Happy New Years! M
Bunny wabbits= dinner mate.
....first step on the path to rustling sheep :)
Vegetarian! I'd be freeing them!! M
Do not know what your problem is guys - George does not seem to mind George being wet :0
He didn’t mind full he started shivering! Jo
Came out much cleaner though! Jo
28th! !!!!!!!
Age showing? ;-)
My mother's was the 28th she made it to 88 yr's. Like your vid's I'm from the U.S. stay warm you two!!!!
Thanks! We're working on it! M
Who's fault is it George? Physics Dad....
Haha!
