There is one way if keeping warm whilst on the tiller!! Stand inside on step of backdoors with them closed behind you and have a longer tiller arm on, with the roof hatch slid back almost against you. Ensure your jacket is loose at bottom then as the warmth from within boat flows up and out it travels up through your jacket filling you with warmth!! Lovely vlog once again, omg George is one crazy dog!! Lol. Looking forward to the next, have safe travel and keep warm lol
Good plan except we have a semi trad not a trad so the tiller is a good four foot away from the doors and our arms just aren’t that long! Thanks for watching. Jo
George is always happy and he makes us happy to with his little wagging tail. As for Day Glow Canal Ninja, I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of him! Jo
When I first saw the Fenny Compton "Tunnel" on a map I was curious as it didn't show it. My research indicated that it was as you said indeed a tunnel albeit not far under ground. In 1838 the Oxford Co. bought the land above it and started to open it up so there were 2 tunnels one 300m or so and the other end 400 (they opened up parts of both ends and the centre) by 1840 and it stayed that way until 1865 when it was decided to make it a cut in with the south opened in 1868 and the north in 1870. The cast iron bridge dates back to that time.
Ewwwh, the water looks so viscous, I can feel the cold. And later, there really was ice! I thought the title was just a joke. George's tail is getting a workout. ☺
Hi Michael hope your keeping a track of the miles of tow path Jo and George have walked/hiked ;-) Enjoy your re blacking after all the Icebreaking your going to be doing in our oldest winter for all of known written history :-) Liked the decent into the lock :-) Fresh meat (Pheasant)via George super/supper ;-) Looking forward to next time Cheers Robi "The Viewer" BOA
Hi, hope you are well. I am certainly keeling very fit with all the walking but I think George would just keep going forever. Snow is forecast tonight and while it would be pretty, I am really hoping it doesn’t happen. Jo
great video again Michael you need to help me dig over my allotment on these mildly cold mornings lol that will keep you mobile . once again great video
All the places you go through with the strange names, tells me where some of the non indigenous people came from as we have places here with the similar name.
Landlocked narrowboat is supposedly the result of farmer giving a laborer a place to stay off the canal as the Trust did not like him tied up in the canal for extended periods. I cannot verify this story but I picked it up from another vlog.
Thank you! I actually love the changing seasons. I also like to complain about the cold! Hope you are not to warm with all that lovely summer sunshine. Four years ago i was in Melbourne and couldn’t believe the 44 degree heat. It was unbearable!
Did I her correctly? Something about George and a Pheasant? I think George is suffering from a conditions commonly call Valium Deficiency. But not to mind, I would say with in 15 years he will mellow out. Stay warm.
Yes, he flushed two out of the undergrowth before he was hauled back onto the boat in disgrace. Luckily they both got away and there was no one nearby with a gun not shoot them down. I aware this dog is six months not six years he has so much energy! I won’t hold my breath about the mellowing out though. Thanks for watching. Jo
New challenge... A drinking game based on the word 'George'... Should be fairly well soaked after an average length video. Random stairs looked like an overflow? Kudos to the pair of you braving the cold. Maybe your could do a short video on layering up or what you've found does and doesn't work when taking turns at the tiller? Someone mentioned a zippo hand warmer. Bit of faff but used to have one as a labourer and it worked very well. Might get another one actually! Do an amazon affiliate link if you get one? Congrats on your first ice break. Not quite Titanic grade but smashing non the less. I remember doing that as a teenager and the noise was truly horrific! All the blacking at the front vanished!! It was about half an inch or so think mind. Honestly enjoying your videos so much. Very relaxing for a chap stuck at home on rest. Make more I'll even throw a couple of quid onto Patreon if your up to new challenges. OK I'm off to type my autobiography as obviously I have a lot to say thanks to the new pain killers!!! All the best to the three of you. :-)
We wouldn’t be sober for long that is for sure. We are loving the winter cruising it is so quiet and really beautiful when the sun is out despite the cold. Not sure our blacking can take too much icebreaking especially if it gets any thicker than that. Glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. Thanks so much for watching.
That’s a hoot 45m later I’m able to type this after removing my dindin from the iPad Thankfuly I didn’t take a swig of beer b4 the b-roll about the old mattress sounding squeaky toy :D
I was laughing at the 4 minutes of bloopers at the end that you weren't sure you could "specifically make" Michael. Your missing mystery tunnel musings at the start of the video must of tempted Jo to include them at the end too :)
Alright how cold is it? Perhaps you might like to explore military surplus or stores for polypropylene beanies and longies or silk. Good to -40F or C. Called really cold, doubt if thin sheet of ice on canals has put you there, it's 0* or 3*C. It generally has kept me relatively happy in extreme cold with 8 feet of ice on lakes and rivers.Wool socks only. If your digits or parts are cold try "HotHands" brand Toe, back, and hand warmers, I did buy in UK once, it was an ASDA/Walmart.
Minimal List 6* C is what 42* F, downright toasty, might be time to lose cotton, and invest in wool hiking socks, warm boots, and perhaps toasty polypropylene or silks. Either that or I just get nervous at -20 to -40 C/F.
finally caught up to the latest video, love watching you guys having fun. George seems to be enjoying his life aboard and the wildlife! lol what camera do you guys use to do your videos? keep up the good work.. some motorcycle heated gloves would keep your tiller hand warm Michael :-)
Thanks for the tip! We mainly just film in the iPhone 6 and a GoPro for the time-lapses. They seem to do the job but are not great in low light when we are inside the boat. Thanks for the support! Jo
As i am sure you have heard on the news, it is getting very cold with snow this weekend so wrap up warn, also i would be careful letting your dog go into fields as farmer can shoot your dog if it is on their land and bothering any animals by law. merry vlogmas :)
Yeah we have heard that, George is not interested in livestock only birds but a farmer with a gun would not know that. We do try to be careful and his recall is pretty good but when he has the sent it all goes out the window. Thanks for the warning though. The temperature is definitely dripping now. It was quite pleasant this morning but there is a bite out there now! It’s still pretty warm on board thank goodness. Jo
hi all and George if i came to were you was born I would be two hot its how and were we were all born I was born in Birmingham in 1965 so I am used to cold weather go round in t shirts and shorts I love are winters hate are summers to hot I love your vlogs waiting for your next A E trip I have gave you new its MR bump if you don't no what that ask your lovely wife keep up your great vlogs
Handwarmers? Use Zippo or similar. Here's a quick review of what I use, including the cheap chinese ones.. You can get lighter fuel in the pound shop, funnily it costs £1 a can. g4isj.blogspot.co.uk/2016/01/handwarmers.html I'm guessing you are now sitting in about 6" of snow...
Fun video as always but im sorry to say the music volume is set to high so i have to turn down the volume and then i cant hear the vocal. I would appreciate it if you turn down the music to the background. I also would like to see the litle helper take a swim again :D. keep making videos i like them so mutch. Greetings from Holland,, Kitty.
I do turn the music down, clearly not enough this time. Will try better on the next vlog. When George is in the water I am usually too busy calling him to get out to point a camera at him and to be honest he has finally realised that it it now a bit too cold to take a swim. Jo
That has to be the happiest dog ever!
We hope so! Apart from when he is sulking when we have hidden his tennis ball! Jo
Napton is great, I love the village store and post office. I also love the pub! Thanks for the update.
Wish we could have stayed longer! Jo
been there ! done that ! several times !. you are right, good place wel worth a visit.
+dugsey Yep! M

I noticed that on one of your other vlogs!! Never mind!! Keep that wood burner stocked up it gonna be a cold one tonight!!!
Love your videos :-)
Made me cold watching this! Stay safe and warm....enjoyed your video!
Made us cold filming it. Bit milder to day but apparently the big freeze is on the way! Jo
Happy George and return of the Canal Ninja! :)
George is always happy and he makes us happy to with his little wagging tail. As for Day Glow Canal Ninja, I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of him! Jo
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS YOUR DOG IS REALLY NICE
Thank you! And yes he is! 😀 Jo

Yep, quite an interesting story of a tunnel that isn’t. M
1. The STTNG reference was excellent. 2. I’d be interested to head the story of the landlocked boat as well!
Great video 👍
Thank you 👍🏻
Thank you for getting cold so we can look at the beautiful countryside lol
Haha, you’re welcome! It was really glorious up there, especially the first day when the sun was shining. Thanks for watching. Jo
Ewwwh, the water looks so viscous, I can feel the cold. And later, there really was ice! I thought the title was just a joke. George's tail is getting a workout. ☺
Not click bait this time. We really were ice breaking all be it through very thin ice. Jo

+wsatnutter Actually the videos are all Jo's work, and she deserves all the credit! I'm just He Who Talks! But thanks! M
Minimal List well done Jo
Enjoyed that as usual.👍Figure you are going to yearn for 6 degrees centigrade over the next few days.😳
Yes! It is currently freezing outside! Managing to keep warm inside though!
All the places you go through with the strange names, tells me where some of the non indigenous people came from as we have places here with the similar name.
Yep, whole lot of English placenames all over North America! M
George!!!!
Landlocked narrowboat is supposedly the result of farmer giving a laborer a place to stay off the canal as the Trust did not like him tied up in the canal for extended periods. I cannot verify this story but I picked it up from another vlog.
We've heard a few different versions of the story now. Rather curious which one it is. M
Michael, you look like Claude Reigns in the Invisible Man!
+Ken Stickles Well, that's going back a few years! I was going for The Shadow, but I'll take the Invisible Man! M
Summer here in Australia. I wish I was there because I love the cold. Travel Safe.
Thank you! I actually love the changing seasons. I also like to complain about the cold! Hope you are not to warm with all that lovely summer sunshine. Four years ago i was in Melbourne and couldn’t believe the 44 degree heat. It was unbearable!
Michael, I think the reason the hand warmer isn't working is because its a tea bag!
Right! As a non-tea drinker he does get a bit confused! Jo
Sealskinz mittens and socks might help ^^
Came here from Mooring the Cut to catch the ice breaking.
Heh! Enjoy! M

As you no doubt can tell I love George. I think a play day with him would be just wonderful. .
Save diesel! Get George to tow the boat!
It’s not a bad idea!
Thumb too cold to switch off the bloopers. Love it! You’ve been through thicker ice since, though.
True that! We had no idea what was in front of us! M

have a look at zippo hand warmers
Thanks for the tip! Jo
I'm a biker and if always got a petrol hand warmer with me , it lasts for about 6+ hours on about 2 teaspoons of Zippo fuel .
Another + for the zippo hand warmers. I have got 12hrs of HOT use from them.
That’s a hoot 45m later I’m able to type this after removing my dindin from the iPad Thankfuly I didn’t take a swig of beer b4 the b-roll about the old mattress sounding squeaky toy :D
Gotta be careful drinking during the bloopers! M
Did you ever come across the story of the landlocked boat?
No, unfortunately not. Would love to know but I guess it maybe as boring as trying to avoid the licence fee! Jo

Don't change a thing !!! #itspartofyourcharm

Currently 6 degrees but we are due a freeze tonight. Snow is forecasted for the weekend which could make life interesting. Eek! Jo

A demolished tunnel is said to be daylighted.
Hah, never heard that term for it, thanks! M

I don't think I'd do so well with the place names, lock numbers and descriptives. I'd need notes!
happy happy George, wonder why us people never get that happy? Could we be guilty of over complicating things?
George is happy with a tennis ball, a full stomach and a bit of exercise! Luckily he gets that everyday! It makes us happy to watch him play! Jo
Hope you have baked some potatoes in the cast iron thing you have, now when you found oute how to warmth the camin enough! BarbroSweden
No we haven’t tried. Will give it another go soon! JO
I was just thinking you could do with a pair of electrical motorcycle gloves and socks there 12 volt
+thumpergman I like that idea, but it'd need to be warm enough for me to run some 12v feeds to drive them! M
So Michael! do you have an address we can all send squeaky toys to for "The George" ? :)
Haha! Unfortunately we have no address. Poor George will just have to miss out on those annoying squeaky toys! Jo
If you could harness George's energy, there would be no need for solar panels!
Or an engine for that matter! Jo
As i am sure you have heard on the news, it is getting very cold with snow this weekend so wrap up warn, also i would be careful letting your dog go into fields as farmer can shoot your dog if it is on their land and bothering any animals by law. merry vlogmas :)

I defy you to break any further ice without hearing the words to Ice Ice Baby in your head.
Well we won’t be able to now! Thanks for that! Jo
Minimal List ain't I terrible? (Ice ice baby)
I don’t know about when we do our next ice breaking but it is in my head now! 😂
lol, well after you move on from Ice Ice Baby, maybe you two can stop. Collaborate. And listen. ;)
Handwarmers? Use Zippo or similar. Here's a quick review of what I use, including the cheap chinese ones..
You can get lighter fuel in the pound shop, funnily it costs £1 a can.

Thanks, a couple of people have recommended them. Yep, there sure is a lot of snow around today! Jo

ooh hahahaha im sorie did not want to complain about your video's. I like your work and i keep watching. Greetings to you and M and G :))
Feedback is good! How else would we improve! 👍🏻
ooh cool then we call it feedback hahaha
