Yeah, as has been pointed out, Kay didn't actually write those lyrics, but he is, however, very proud to count himself and the band as hard rock and heavy metal pioneers. Because that is the genre he has always, and rightly so, considered Steppenwolf belonging to.

While I was waiting for the bus to go home last week an elderly, grizzled, tired, and disheveled looking gentleman approached me, and asked if I had $.60 for bus fare (senior fare.) I did, so I gave it to him. He sat down on the bench next to me, leaned back, and closed his eyes.
After a moment he said, "Will you do one more thing for an old man?"
    "Sure," I replied.
"Will you play 'Born to be Wild' for me?"
"By Steppenwolf?" I asked in surprise.
    "Yes, ma'am, that's the one."
So, I pulled up Spotify, and played it for him.
I dunno why, but it made me so happy. :)

By the way, your description of him and the encounter was very well written.

Great song by a very early hard rock group. A dear late fiend of mine was an Army Ranger LRRP during the Vietnam war. After he was back in civilian life and this song and others like it came on the radio he would tell us the helicopter crews ferrying his group into the back country would have Steppenwolf blaring inside the helicopter with everyone on high alert. It was subtle but we could see him stiffen up a bit when recounting that experience.

I have always been convinced this song is where the term "heavy metal" came from. "Heavy metal thunder, and the feelin' that I'm under". This is from 1968 and 1970 has often been referred to as "The Birth of Heavy Metal"!!?? So they needed a term and Steppenwolf had already used it.

John Kay, the one with the long hair and the mustache in the pictures, LOL, wrote and sang this classic with a lot of style. This song is where the phrase "Heavy Metal" was first used in a song, so that makes it historically significant. Speaking of riding motorcycles, this song was also used as the title music over the credits in the movie Easy Rider, which is exactly the scenario you were describing, except the boys in the movie were going from LA Ca. to NOLA. You need to see the movie "EASY RIDER" TONIGHT!!!

The organist on this track is Goldie McJohn. Before confounding Steppenwolf he was a member of a Canadian band called the Mynah Birds which also included pre-fame Rick James and Neil Young. They recorded one album for Motown which was never released after someone at the label learned that Ricky James was really James Johnson and wanted for going AWOL from the navy to avoid being sent to Vietnam. After prison, James became a session player in LA and eventually resigned with Motown in the late 70’s. Neil Young would join Buffalo Spring and later Crosby Stills Nash & Young.

It's called Coddiwomple {English slang word} ~ (v.) to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination. You should give it a try once. It's a leap of faith worth taking. You are absolutely right about this song being about motorcycles and a wild time tearing up the highway. It was the main theme to the movie Easy Rider that starred Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper (and featured Jack Nicholson) tripping on their choppers. The line “heavy metal thunder” originally referred to the roar of the motorcycle, but then came to be associated with the sound of guitar-driven hard rock bands.

I was in junior high....there was a motorcycle gang movie and this was the theme song. Our parents disapproved, of course. My brother did end up joining a motorcycle gang. I wasn't allowed to see the movie, but the song was frequent on the radio. 💜

The Movie "Easy Rider" and this song in particular, was responsible for me "changing my life". Sort of like one of those sliding door moments. I watched the movie, listened to the music, then sold my AJS 500 and purchased a Triumph 750 Bonnie. Things were forever different after that. Cheers.

This was the song that coined the term 'Heavy Metal' for the first time, and was made famous in the film 'Easy Rider.'... Oh, and it's "I like smokin' lightning." If you don't know what that is, look it up -- not allowed to explain it on YT...
