I am a Catholic priest and love the study of science, astronomy, and enjoy astrophotography. I've been following your channel from its earliest days. You have helped many people with your videos on astrophotography. I have benefited myself. Thank you.
Regarding the process of getting your baptism record annotated, etc., I'm sad the parish of your baptism didn't handle it well. Your letter to your local Archdiocese was polite and clear, and I am glad that it did get settled to your satisfaction.
Your side-note of abuse cases reveals that the people in the Church are sinners and in need of repentance. All abuse is abhorrent. Period. That needs to be said, an we all agree that those cases need to be adjudicated and the victims given the care they need for healing.
Regarding databases, every Catholic parish has a record of who had been baptized. Those pages may be sent to the (Arch)diocese office of said parish for archival uses in case the parish suffers some kind of incident that destroys the local documents. The Vatican does not have your name in any database, but rather a count of numbers of baptisms per diocese each year. Keeping records is not a bad thing. Locally, these baptism records serve a good use for Catholics who want to show their local parish that they are eligible for other Sacraments such as First Communion, Marriage, etc. So, no worries, the Vatican does not have your name anywhere. The local records are permanent, and you were rightfully told that yours be annotated.
Just so you know, bishops often make frequent trips to Rome for a variety of reasons. For example, every five years, bishops make visits to talk with the Pope and share questions and guidance. Sometimes, they can be told to come for disciplinary action, but those are rarely needed. Mostly, it is part of their role to stay in communion with the bishop of Rome (aka the Pope).
I read the article you referred to and read others from the area during that time. I have not heard or read anything that said the Pope tried to cover up anything. So, some of your comments may be an overgeneralization, but due to the seriousness of the abuse cases, clarity and not insinuation is needed. It is a horrible thing that members of my Church have perpetrated. It demonstrates that all people have the capacity to do bad things, and their leaders are no exception. It also demonstrates that we still have a journey of repentance to God for our sins.
On a different note, are you aware that the Catholic Church has two observatories? One in the Vatican and the other in Tucson, AZ. You might find it interesting: vaticanobservatory.org The goal of the observatories is to further scientific understanding of our universe. Good stuff! Keep looking up!

Yes. Thanks for your response. That’s the one I found. There is no contesting that the Catholic Church has caused tragic harm to the innocent. One is too many. Today, bishops are to take seriously all accusations that are received today and are to be reported to the civil authorities. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have recognized their faults to keep children safe and have since bound themselves and us priests to follow a document called, The Charter for three Protection of Children and Young People. It’s pretty extensive and requires pastors like me to ensure that all staff and volunteers are background checked, attend annual safety training, and are always vigilant for potential bad actors.
Will this completely stop abuse? Not as long as we humans are sinners. But, this side of eternity, this charter goes a long way to help prevent harm. It is more strict than any other institutional document I can think of when it comes to the protection of the innocent. Pope Benedict XVI and again Pope Francis have made the process of investigating and penalizing an accused minister quickly compared to what was reported in the article you read.

@@DylanODonnellDylan, by the way, I'm Orthodox... if you ever wish to see the church I've been baptised in... it's right across the street from a Catholic church, which, in turn, is right next to a Reformed church, and I pray in all of them... admittedly not very often. I can't read the Bible, though... it's too disturbing... one look around and... it just doesn't look good. But we're terrans, and life around here's supposed to suck. There's no point in whining... getting upset at God like you know Him personally (you shouldn't judge someone you don't know), getting upset at the Church as if you wouldn't know it's made of people (yeah, like Soylent Green)... and generally whining about the meaning of your life. You know what the meaning of your life is? Your parents thought they wanted you because they didn't know any better and, in those times, they couldn't have seen what was coming, unless... never mind. That's why you were born, that's why you are here. Suck it up and stop finding things to blame... unless you're fighting the spiritual war... in the front lines!

LMAO. I am 78 years old and share a similar story. One day when I was 40ish, I said out loud at a family get together "I am glad I am not a Catholic anymore," to which the entire room full of my toxic Catholic family said "Oh no! Once a Catholic always a Catholic." This was the last day I had anything to do with my entire Catholic birth family, never saw any of them again. My pursuit of getting "unbaptized" was similar, except I spoke to a Cannon Lawyer, and was also told excommunication was the only way. I said "great what do I gotta do?" He explained "something serious like threaten a Bishop," to which I replied "great give me a name and address," and at that point the Cannon Lawyer hung up. A non-catholic friend of mine heard my story, and found an ex-nun somewhere, who hand created a certificate proclaiming that I was not a Catholic any more. She signed it with her name and title "Ex-Nun." I hung it on my wall as my prized trophy, and feel as though I was "unbaptized" as you put it. Love your story. Now I know I am not the only one on the planet who wanted to be officially declared "not a Catholic." Woooohoooo for you Dylan.

The apostle Thomas went on to become one of the most widely traveled of the Apostles, and a powerful evangelizer- to this day, there are Christians in India with the surname Thomas. He was said to be martyred (driven through with spears or swords, something like that) in India. There are even accounts in the Jesuit missionaries(The Paraguay Reductions) of South America of hearing from the native tribes an old tale of a man named Tome who crossed the continent carrying a cross, who was beaten and had multiple attempts on his life, performing miracles to include raising people from the dead. “Doubting Thomas” was apparently only a temporary phase in his life.

I was not-so-politely asked to leave the United Methodist Church when I was 16 and starting on my journey of self-discovery and questioning about the nature of the universe. Fortunately, I managed to avoid baptism. I think my questioning began when I asked my grandmother why we were Methodists instead of a different church (where all the cool kids went). She told me it was because we lived a block from the UMC and the other church was four blocks away. That was the basis of our whole religious life: geographical convenience.
In 1981, I made a declaration (to myself if no one else) that I was an atheist and I've been one ever since.

Great story, Dylan. Congratulations on achieving your quest to become unbaptized. I was raised in the Southern Baptist Church here in the USA. You may have heard of that denomination. At one time it was the largest Christian denomination in the USA, with more than 15 million members. When my wife (also raised Southern Baptist) and I were married (51 years ago) we both decided to try to remove ourselves from the Southern Baptist membership rolls. After several very unpleasant sessions with ministers of our local churches, we were unsuccessful. We were told that the only way to remove yourself from their membership was to die (and even then it was uncertain). Needless to say, we haven't darkened the door of a Southern Baptist Church since. In fact, we went on to remove our bodies and souls from all churches altogether.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. I love the part of being labeled an apostate. The church needs to stop promoting the bible as being true if they want to continue in any semblance of geniune service to humanity - otherwise the milk has gone sour. I was dumb enough to believe them for many years. It took a very long time, after leaving them, to come up with my own answers to "what was all that?", "who is God?" etc. But I guess that's the price of the admission ticket to life.

This is quite interesting. Here in Germany, your confession is tied to government stuff too (for paying taxes to the church for example). I too was babtized as kid an as such, my records show(ed) that I'm catholic, both in the church and legal documents. As far as I know, here you really just have to go to the local government, formally leave your confession, and you'll get removed. The priest will often contact you to reconsider your decision, so I assume this basically does the same too. Costs a good chunck of money too unfortunately (60€). I did this too a while back and don't regret it either.

So, I have a thought for content-

You could then make an entire video showing me how to use it correctly! From setup to final image processing. I would be willing to pay you for it. I mean, if I owned $8000 in astrophotography gear and paid $1000 to someone like you to show me how to use it correctly, it would be worth every penny.
You then post it on your channel for others to learn. You could explain what things might be needed to complete my rig, and if you have these things, use them during the video to show its proper use.
Anyway, love what you do. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to enhance our lives. 😊

I really enjoyed the video, astro related or not. I was raised with a strict Pentecostal upbringing where it was taught "Bible only, no questions." It was definitely frowned upon, and I was discouraged as a kid when I decided I wanted to be an astronomer when I grew up. Hi, Dylan. I am Catholic and I have no ill will toward you for your decision to unenroll from the Catholic Church. Everyone is given free will as a birthright. I just wanted to let you know there is a need for clarification. Baptism is considered a sacrament no matter what Christian faith you espouse. You are disenrolled from the Catholic faith, but you are not unbaptized. Even now, you have the power to baptize. Every baptized Christian has this power.
The need for Catholic baptism close to birth was started to ensure the child's soul could enter heaven in case of a premature death. The documentation is held within the parish to assure you have the right to the other sacraments of the church. When I was married, I had to request a copy of my baptism records from my old parish.
Someone stated that you cannot get married in the Catholic Church if you marry a non-Catholic. This is not true. You can have a marriage ceremony in the church. You cannot have the marriage in the context of the Mass. My sister is a testament to that. This is out of respect for the non-Catholic family, not as a slight to them.
At any rate, I love your channel. I will continue to watch your great (and entertaining) content. I wish you and your family all the best. Please continue to live a good life.
    Your friend,
    Clarence from Louisiana, USA🖖

As a believer in Jesus Christ I understand the frustrations of man-made dogmatic religion. Jesus himself was irritated by the formalist self-righteous state of Judaism. I have no doubt the audacity of the Roman Catholic church in its formulaic practices as well as other 'christian' religions have strayed toward that same dogmatism.
Baptism of children is somehow thought as a stop-gap pre-saving device as if Jesus is going to look up in heavens database and reject anyone including children who die. When Christ went to John the Baptist he was an adult and made the choice of freewill acknowledging the significance. Baptism should be a choice in your heart between you and Jesus, not between you and some religion as a gateway to services from the religion. Following Christ isn't some club membership to pull out when convenient either.
If we're not in a mental place to want a relationship with Christ no amount of baptism as a child is going to cover our asses. If you need proof like Thomas required, it's between Christ and you, not between some religion's dogma and you. Having attended and been a member of various churches I understand your desire to distance yourself from what you perceive is their benefitting from your inclusion in the rolls. I still love a lot of people who I attended with, and we share belief in Christ, but I see modern churched religions as very different from faith in Christ which is a personal decision.
I see the glory of the creator when I look up and away from the man-made world that resides on top of the creation below my feet. We may send satellites up into the space, and temporarily blind seeing the skies with light pollution, but a simple trip to a dark site and can look up in awe and know life is meaningless in the scheme of the creators plan. We all are star stuff into which God breathed his spirit, so we can look up with more than just logic. I'm no Vulcan, I'm human with the emotions given to mankind, to be amazed and to have wonder to explore and glorify the creator in his creation.

The flaws of humans exist regardless on any religion anyone follows. That being said, religions can be a positive addition in that they can provide a common value structure leading to personal growth and positive relationships in communities. When virtue is subjective, you can end up with a sort of moral anarchy, even though religion is no guarantee of moral behavior. Religions unified people. It was the best we had for a long time. Now, with the death of God, we have to find our own way to maintain some sort of internal and societal harmony. Without the fear of God, or any sort of self-control, oh boy are we fucked.

Thank God you were not a Muslim as the penalty for apostasy is death. Joking apart, whilst I can see the logic of the unbaptism move, this video did not shed any light on whether you were simply not trusting the institution (which has flaws similar and in some cases worse than other institutions) or the actual message. I see these as two totally different things as the Catholic church has done some abhorrent actions which go diametrically opposite to the message it purports to support. Having said that, I still feel that the Christian message remains very valid. It must also be borne in mind that modern science arose within the influence of the Christian tradition esp during the 15 to the early 20th centuries (in spite of the opposition from the Catholic church). A side note...the Catholic church has also had elements in it that have done and continue to do an enormous amount of good work with many unprivelidged sectors of different societies so it would be incorrect to lump everybody in the same basket. But like you, I am generally not impressed by how certain aspects of this institution were or are currently handled. By the way I love the star stuff aspect of your channel and keep up the excellent work.

I was the valedictorian of my Hebrew School. But even then, I knew it was all steaming piles of bullshit. I was just a very good student.
What tipped me off was Genesis 18:20-33. This is the story of Abraham bargaining with god. It goes something like this:
G: I'm gonna destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
A: But would you really destroy the good with the wicked? What if there are 50 good people there? (A really has to remind G that this is bad?)
G: Nah, bruh. If there are 50, I won't destroy them.
And A proceeds to haggle with G over the number. A gets G all the way down to 10.
Why not push G down to 4, or, if you don't count Lot's Wife as good, then 3?
I'm sorry, but when G says a thing, that is the thing. You either accept this or go straight to hell, do not pass go, do not collect $200, not even $200AUD. The terms are non-negotiable. You don't haggle with god.
And, after further contemplation, I rejected the whole thing. Glad I did.
