They really managed to capture this alone, low fidelity, gut-wrenching secondhand embarrassment atmosphere. Great job, seems like you still can do this without people noticing who you are which surprises me :D
@@joshsnyder4868 Indeed it has :D I have lot of experience of cruise ships between Sweden - Finland and there is unfortunately lot of people depicted in this video. Can't deny that I wouldn't have been such a character in one of those hahah
This really reminds me of a book called: Bowling Alone by Robert D Putnam. It's strange to see those concepts at work and essentially in overdrive at this point in time. Notice how nobody even looks at him, because they don't want to be associated with someone that has less social capital than they do. The man that is speaking with his girlfriend is so uncomfortable, because he doesn't want to put off his date by interacting with someone who is alone and thereby associating himself with loneliness. He may have a fear of looking lonely and confusing that for showing empathy for Cherdleys. IMO this was one of the hardest watches for me and to think it lasted only 8 minutes it makes me wonder what has happened to us as a species where we cannot pay attention to a man that is clearly lonely and has been convinced he needs to take medication in order to be "normal". Where have we gone as a society to believe that if we empathize or even associate with people who have less social capital are essentially "nobodies" - it's as if they don't exist and I think that's truly what we fear. It's the nothingness of having no social capital. Obviously Cherdleys has many people who love him for his work and the smile he puts on people's faces, but I think this video left a mark on me and made me realize how shallow we all truly are. Thank you Cherdleys for this poignant piece and I love you for it!
Social ineptness was and is a weakness. Those that cannot contribute will always be left behind. His desperation also makes him less attractive and approachable.
Commenting for the algorithm. Ive been subscribed for a long time, i usually dont comment, but this one deserves it. Might be my favorite video from you, it showcases your skill as a filmmaker, to let a story breathe, and reveal itself through context clues and interaction with others. Plus the cringe is not only hilarious/sad, it reveals more about the character than meets the eye. Superb
Holy shit what a well told story! And the 2000s digital camera look gave it such a personal rawness. I love all your sketches but it’s very rare to feel this many conflicting emotions while watching a youtube video, this was more than just comedy. I’m glad I stumbled upon this masterpiece and I’d love to see more cinematic storytelling like this from you
This reminds me of your earlier work as the green shirted glasses boy-Cherds. That character sure has brightened some dark days for me, as this one does as well.
I have been following you for a while because I am an x mormon and I find your humor incredible. This video felt very real and left me with goosebumps from head to toe. This reminded me of David Foster Wallace. And I remember he wrote a piece on cruises so it had that kind of a vibe. Furthermore, I will tell you. I can relate to you fully because I have drowned my brain with lsd mushrooms and copious amounts of mdma. I also grew up in extreme child abuse. I consider myself a nihilist and the humor you present is top notch. i would love to be your friend.
Well directed story, it felt real. Dad and cringe, why don’t wet have empathy for people who are cringe? Cringe people are still people who deserve empathy
I've been to music festivals by myself, and I had a good time (I didn't cling to people, I didn't talk to anyone, and the cutest interaction was that the people dancing under the stage next to me looked friendly). But when I recall the events when I was without company (which was almost always) and it's like I'm looking at myself from the side (like at that guy), it becomes sad.
Better than the vast majority of short films entered into film festivals! A tragic-comedy, with really astounding acting; the mise en scène, weird pixelation and strange colouring added to the vibe. Couldn't take my eyes off it. Congratulations 👏

This is one of the best things cherdleys have made love it and the serious yet funny tone of it is amazing also must point out the sound design was good would love to see a sequel
