    I heard with great sadness that Hidekazu Yukawa had passed away. While the news is breaking today, he actually passed in June 2021, and the news was kept private. For those who didn't know Hidekazu Yukawa was often called "Mr. Sega" and truly bled blue. While he was most remembered for the Dreamcast ad campaign, he appeared in many Sega CMs, since the early 80s, usually without any reference to who he was. Also as management on CSK, who owned Sega at the time, he was able to coordinate and cross promote Sega with other ventures owned by the parent company. He will be missed and never forgotten.

    I think the reason why people love Segata Sanshiro is that in the west he have over the top silly advertisement mascots like him, but they would never beat up someone for using a rival product. In the west when they would silently discontinue their mascot. With Segata Sanshiro they gave him a proper send off that was both hilarious and emotional.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 лет назад +1

      It’s a good point to make. They had proper send offs

    The fact that the first 3-4 commercials in the Mr. Sega series are used solely to set up the later parts of the story, and essentially serve as TV spots that say “Sega sucks” and that’s pretty much it, shows how much confidence they have in their idea as a whole. You’d NEVER see a brand self deprecate themselves like that almost anywhere else. You gotta respect the lengths they went for the benefits of a story/campaign to tell a complete and honest story.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  5 лет назад

      Yeah I get your point. They really had a long game in mind but in the Saturn era in Japan Sega was actually well liked! Making it all the more funnier. Thanks for watching

    LOVED the Dreamcast. With the VGA adapter all the games looked beautifully clear. Played tons of Phantasy Star Online so I guess I'd have to pick that as my favourite, but there are really so many great games. Sonic Adventure 1&2, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind/Set Radio, Typing of the Dead(!), Soul Calibur, Metropolis Street Racer, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1 & 2, the Tony Hawk Games...and of course, Shenmue 1 & 2.

    I love the self-deprecation, like how they have to hire a boy-band talent (Takizawa Hideaki) to get people to buy Dreamcasts from Mr. Yukawa. Like Yukawa can try a sales pitch and get mocked or doors slammed in his face, then Takizawa does the exact same thing but gets met with enthusiastic response... then Takizawa tricks people into getting Dreamcasts from Yukawa. xD

    I can't process how celebrities age over gaps of time. The 19 year olds when I was 9 are in their golden years. That kind of thing. 55 year old 25 years ago are 80. Just, damn.
    On that note, I cannot wait for the 30 anniversary video for phantasy star 4. I have been counting the months for years ever since seeing his phantasy star 1 30 year anniversary, and going back and watching the series anniversary video, and after a few years his phantasy star 2 video, the 3 video, and the super sweet 35 year anniversary😢. Wild.

    Perhaps this was to help promote the Sales of the Dreamcast around Black Friday Shopping at the time. But knowing that the Dreamcast didn't sell too well in the Western Gaming Market at the time, it may have backfired

    I just love seeing how things went down for the Dreamcast on the other side of the pond. Here it felt so quick, hit hard and vanished before most could even notice what had happened. But for those lucky few who discovered they could be complimented by Spock for raising and conversing with an inquisitive abomination of nature, they more than likely just went back to roller skating and spray painting walls to Dragula. For that sentence alone may the Dreamcast never be forgotten.
