      Still have. One title surpassed them all (& was so ahead of the time... "Soul Calibur"). To this day, it can hang & bang with several gaming systems & fight engines: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter & Killer Instinct.. The Combo system, of Soul Calibur, is still a work of art.

    All things considered, I feel things worked out about as well as they could for both companies. I'm still not convinced it was the right decision to pull the Dreamcast when they did, but they are still in business, so who knows.

    Great video! Imagine the possibilities that could have resulted by Microsoft buying Sega.

    Bill Gates felt Sega did not have enough muscle to take out Sony. This is where Microsoft did a Sega of the 90s whom rejected pairing up with Sony. Microsoft still cannot compete with Sony in the console war and it is not even close, had Microsoft paired up with Sega for a dreamcast 2, they could have easily had success in the Japanese market and would have had so many quality exclusives today that they may have even taken out Sony, but this was not meant to be. Bill Gates made a bad decision.

    I felt SEGA made a comeback with the Dreamcast and supported it with great games and tried to get what 3rd party support it could. Having Capcom releasing so many games on it was proof of that. Unfortunately, many 3rd parties were still needed. Konami and EA, anyone? The inclusion of a DVD player also could have been a game-changer for the DC. I didn't have a DVD player until I got a PS2 and I already had the DC so I may have passed on the PS2 if the DC had one.
    But I can see that a lot of people were burned with the 32X and even the Sega CD, which was a great add on but not supported properly. I did eventually get a Sega CD years after it was discontinued but the small collection of games I have for it consist of mostly Japanese games and the few better US games. Deciding to focus on FMV games really hurt its potential. I totally passed on 32X and to this day I see no reason to ever get it or collect its games. Saturn was and still is an amazing system but one that mainly appealed to the hardcore gamer with its amazing 2D games with so many only being available in Japan. So, yeah, these failures and setbacks definitely affected the DC's success.
    I see the original XBox as what the DC should have been in terms of hardware.

      But the Dreamcast hardware was fantastic and a lot of the games on both systems look better on the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast power was totally underrated.

    Fantastic work man and very informative. There are so many great SEGA games that need a series reboot but the more time that goes by the more of a pipe dream it becomes. I still feel so fortunate that we got a Jet Grind and Panzer Dragoon game on the XBOX. Keep up the good work, we will be binge watching your vids over the weekend :)

    Microsoft buying Sega and then ultimately probably closing all their studios and losing the Sega name entirely wouldn't have saved them. I'm pretty confident if Microsoft had bought Sega, the name Sega would be all but dead aside from on perhaps Sonic games. It would be like what happened with Hudson and Konami. Microsoft is pure cancer just like EA and I'm glad Sega was smart enough to not be bought or merged with Microsoft.

    • @HistoricNerd
      @HistoricNerd  5 лет назад +1

      That was why I choose the statement saved the Dreamcast. I have to agree with you there about Microsoft most likely just keeping Sega as a name and gutting the rest.

  • @rkraiem100

    WOW that was interesting!!! I never knew any of this!!! Now I'm curious to see if there are any references to this in the Hyperdimension Neptunia games, specifically in rebirth 3 since that game reference this period of gaming history

    • @HistoricNerd
      @HistoricNerd  5 лет назад

      I'll actually have to look into that.

    • @rkraiem100
      @rkraiem100 5 лет назад

      @@HistoricNerd Neptunia is a series about video game consoles in the form of anime girls fighting the "console wars" over the land of "gamindustri" and occasionally fighting the personified form of game piracy known as Arfoire (reference to the R4 DS chip). The series is filled with so many video game and anime references that it would be literally impossible to point them all out (I know this cus I tried to cover them all in a YT series). The plot of the main trilogy is basically an adaptation of actual video game history with some tweaks to make the story more interesting.
      Rebirth 1 is a sort of hypothetical of "what if Sega was able to recover after the Dreamcast". Rebirth 2 centers around the arguments and debate of game piracy and its effects on the industry (legit the characters ACTUALLY debate the villain on the morality and effects of piracy at one point in the game which was super interesting). Rebirth 3 is basically a 1 for 1 adaptation of video game history from 1985 to the early 2000s and is my personal favorite of the series (Its incredibly faithful and covers everything from the major stuff to the obscure stuff!!!). There is also VII which covers a lot of issues and complaints with the current video game industry. There are also like 10 spinoff games all of which reference something but they usually reference anime rather than video games.

    It would have made no difference, Sony had won its audience and sold people an idea, that their new machine was going to be able to do things it could not and also had a DVD drive, I literally had shop assistants telling me to not buy anything for Dreamcqast and just wait and buy a PS2 when it was going to be released. The Dreamcast was fine the way it was, People that owned a PS1 naturally wanted to stay brand loyal.

    I still prefer what came to be. Having Sega remain independent. Microsoft ruins practically everything it touches. No different from EA, Activision, Ubisoft, or SquareEnix.
    Dreamcast didn't die because of piracy. PS2 was just as easy to pirate for a small fee, and it went on to sell the most units of any system to date, as well as millions and millions of games. Dreamcast died because of their unwarranted fear of the "piracy boogeyman", comically limiting the disc space with a proprietary format, Sega's arrogance in believing they didn't need third party support, and that absolutely god awful controller. One of the worst controllers ever.
    The design was bad enough, with 1 analog stick, and the cable coming out of the bottom. I mean, the Dualshock was out for a few years before Dreamcast, and for some reason, they still insisted on going with one analog stick. Baffling.
    Then you have the plastic, which was just terrible. The devouring of batteries on a monthly basis. Sharp edges and narrow grips. Just a total head scratcher on whoever designed that controller.
    I had a Dreamcast myself, and chose to sell it while it was still worth something, than "pirate free games" for it. It was a dead system walking, on borrowed time.

    Feminism killed Sega. Night Trap and blood in Mortal Kombat. That was Sega's identity. A console for edgy teens. Made the Genesis a hit. But then feminists did what they always do, and what they continue to do today, and they attacked Sega, killing the potential of the Sega CD and FMVs. Then the Saturn came around looking like a battered husband pushing out kids games. Meanwhile, what was happening on PS1? What should've happened on Sega CD. Resident Evil. Silent Hill. FFVII which was a hit because it's a game made for kids and older gamers. Sega just became another 3DO or Jaguar, meaning nothing but ports of games from failing computers of the time, mostly Amiga and Atari ST, as well as arcade games. In other words, nothing new. Gamers were looking to the future, Sega was giving you ports of the past. Ports of games at least a year old. Nothing new. Sega lost it's edge and being sued non-stop by feminists is what did it. Horror and mature themes was the future. Horror games and games like Warcraft. If Sega were allowed to be themselves and make the Sega CD and 32X a hit with more mature games, we probably would've got WoW in '95 with the name Phantasy Star or Shining Force or Lunar. All games made in the past two decades I could easily see showing up on the Dreamcast, but Sega were too afraid to take risks.
