  • From 1991, our profile of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter. The young African American boxer was on his way to a world title fight. But before that he became involved in a miscarriage of justice. In 1966, in Patterson, New Jersey he became a victim of racism and framed for murder. Carter might have spent his entire life in prison, except for an idealistic band of Canadians who decided to take up his cause. Hana Gartner profiles Carter and chronicles the struggle to clear his name.

The film and this documentary makes me believe it was seriously some cosmic-connection going on. I mean just knowing a group of people from another country...just stumbles upon meeting a child, who will later pick up a book and be so inspired by it (same person who was illiterate) and decided to send that one letter that would spark a relationship that would later PROVE Rubin Carter's innocence where he may have died in prison for a crime he didn't commit. That is undeniably beautiful right there.

+Mark Hazleton Cosmic connection? No, it is Divine Intervention from GOD, don't you SEE? GOD always has a purpose & his judgement comes upon the wicked, & justice & freedom is given to GOD'S CHILDREN; and it is just like GOD said unto us that, The wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just! GOD puts certain people in our lives as an extraordinary reminder of his LOVE FOR US through others, just like he puts us in other people's lives as a reminder of his LOVE FOR THEM! No, look at the way he talked in the 60s about getting guns and shooting cops. Lok at the way he writes in his autobiography about wanting to shoot anyone who crossed him. Look at the way he beat up and hospitalized a woman who was helping support him when on bail. Carter in the 60's was a violent psychopath and the evidence placed him at the scene of the Lafayette Bar murders, a revenge killing following the murder of his friend Eddie Rawls stepfather in another bar earlier that evening.

Lesra Martin was right to move to Toronto, Canada, with these Canadian folks, whom were willing to take him in and help him get a better education in hopes of fulfilling his dreams. And that happened. In just two years, he learned how to read and write, he had the courage to visit the man whose book inspired him deeply, Rubin Hurricane Carter [in prison], and was able to fulfill his potential by going to university at the University of Toronto and some other good schools across Canada, like Dalhousie University. He worked as a Crown prosecutor and then a lawyer in civil cases.
Had he stayed in Bushwick, in Brooklyn, the worst thing he would have expected was doing time in prison, like the notorious drug kingpin Frank Lucas, though it could've been decades. But thankfully, that did not happen. His trip across the border was what changed everything [and it did!]I hope that many of us could learn from this remarkable experience, whether we live in Canada or the United States.

I have a theory..........when the cops stopped the car with Carter, Artis, and a dude named John "Bucks" Royster the first time, they let them go. When they came around the second time, it was only Carter and Artis. John "Bucks" Royster came out of the car. My theory is that IF Carter did do it, then Carter and JOHN ROYSTER did it, and Carter was like "Why tf do I have to sit in the prison cell, and he is free?!" And "When he testified in 1967, Royster slumped in the witness chair and the judge asked him how many drinks he had downed before coming to court that morning." So he basically dumbed himself down so he doesn't get himself in trouble.

I firstly heart Bob Dylan's song "Hurricane" not realising it was based on a true event. Year's laters I found and brought this DVD from a 2nd hand shop called "Hurricane". Bob Dylan's song was the theme song, the story shown in this movie was unbelievable. Great out come to a real life story.

Awesome boxer!! No one could ague that. For years I was all about Carter's criminal innocence. Then I wised up. Dug deep... real, real deep.. for a long, long time. Gobbled up every piece of information from both sides of the issue. In the end the evidence against Carter is SO INCREDIBLY strong and SO VERY obvious. If all anyone cares to dig out of this story is the cultural politics and fluff of Hollywood, and come away with an opinion of innocence, that's entirely up to them. For those of us who have taken the time and diligence to seek and piece the elements, Carter was not only a murderer, but CLEARLY a murderer, and by virtue of that is was he alone who destroyed his own boxing career. No judge, and no jury, ever found him innocent. He was released after serving 20 years of his sentence only on the chance basis of one judge's opinion, and that opinion was not formed because of innocence, but of mere trial technicality. Fact.
