IIRC from 1985-1991 ABC handled about half the regular schedule, with ESPN taking over for most of the summer tour and NBC handling the rest. I think it might be in part because ESPN also held the rights to what then the Ladies Professional Bowlers Tour (now the PWBA) and Senior Tour (now PBA50), so Denny Schreiber (sic?), who was ESPN's point man for bowling at the time, had no shortage of gigs. Regardless, this as during the era when the PBA Tour was still worth watching. The shootout match format (which thankfully only lasted a couple of years) near the end of the 1990s was the end of the Tour's golden era in my overrated opinion.
@journeymanproject1756 1985 was the first year ESPN did bowling coverage. They typically had the LPBT/PWBA events Wednesday nights, then when they had their slate of PBA events; those were Saturday nights. NBC did the fall events from 84-91 (Earl Anthony & Jay Randolph). The shootout was stupid because it took a spot away for a guy to make TV. The golden pins were tolerable
This was the final ABC Sports PBA broadcast for 1990. The ABC Sports PBA Tour series finale would occur nearly seven years later, in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

@irishpogi
I didn't realize that ABC coverage of bowling went into the early summer events. I had thought they usually stopped in the spring.
