I still get chill bumps watching this tournament. That's winning your first title means. $23,000 and going to the T of C. I have never that crowd erupt the way they did. It's raw emotion. LOVE IT !!
what an enjoyable show to watch. really hard to root for one over another in every round, especially the final.how can you NOT root for the top seed in this one? im 6’5”, same as Mr. Tapp and modeled my approach to his in my prime…and his.
Really, the Contreras -Tapp title match was one of the greatest of all time. I watched it live 36 years ago in another lifetime, and reviewing it today, as late as the 8th frame, I wondered, "did Contreras really win the match" as I remembered. Indeed, he did. A total classic, a day in the sun for Toby Contreras. Tremendous. But, but whatever happened to Toby Contreras? He would be about 61 now- did he never ever again make the top 5? This was a match in time, a slice of bowling history, a great feel good moment for Contreras, and all the fans.
@@lawdog43494 this year he moved into the PBA SR National Tour Director role upon John Weber's retirement. Toby is still as good a person as they come and does a great job.
For sure. I had even felt sorry for Tapp until he walked off before the match had ended. Poor sportsmanship. Especially given that earlier, after he'd rolled a strike to win his match against Soper, he said aloud "Goon night Irene!" He could dish it out, but he couldn't take it.
Seems odd that Tapp would leave the pair before the match was over. Contreras still needed two pins to win. Moreover, he should’ve congratulated Toby on his win while still on the air.
Nelson should have corrected himself after misidentifying the pin action on Contreras's unusual pickup of the 2-7-8. It was obvious the ball carried the 8 on first view. When the slow motion replay confirmed it he missed a great chance to point out the interesting fact that the 8 took out the 7, not vice versa.
This is when you had to make a good shot. Today because of the crybaby's on the tour you can miss by 5 boards and still hit the pocket. The PBA has really gone down the toilet.
The PBA? How about the USBC? The entire game is a travesty compared to pre-1990. High women's league average this year 250; high men's league average 256. It is not unusual to see more 300 games bowled in one USBC National tournament than in the first 70 years combined. It's not the bowlers' fault. This is because the governing bodies of bowling have allowed it to happen. The game has lost its integrity. Talented bowling balls, walled up conditions, live pins have all made the game too easy. When I started bowling, a lane was 60 feet. I would venture to say that lane conditions are so easy today that, in effect, a lane is virtually 30-40 feet long. In other words, your target is that much closer and that much easier to hit.
Bowling centers were in competition to set up the best/easiest shot. I agree this allowed marginal bowlers to score. Thus the integrity and skill of the game was ruined
Too bad Contrares didn't go on to be a big star; the fans would've loved him, and he would've been great for the game. Charlie Tapp was a true "Debbie Downer," showing no class by walking off without congratulating this kid. Without his lucky Brooklyn strike in the 9th, it wouldn't have been close. He deserved to lose.
I think that Tapp congratulated him when they were showing Toby's parents. I seriously doubt that he would have just walked away without doing it but he did leave quickly.
@@dirklerxstpratt2112 FYI to everyone, the camera missed the handshake. Toby and I are very good friends. In fact, I talked with his parents and sister afterwards in spite of being totally PO'd.
Probably my favorite PBA show. I mean, how can you not love Toby C. in this show. Incredible.
Soper with that spinner ball...when we was dialed in, he'd throw Xs all damn day. Just a solid bowler.
Forty years later, Toby serves as the Greater Kansas City MO USBC Association Manager.

This is amazing I bowl with Toby Contreras on Thursday mornings. He’s Ana amazing guy and an even amazing bowler

Love how Charlie Tapp tried to distract him on the last ball by going up and taking his ball off the rack before he threw. LOL

This was toby’s *only* championship round appearance.
Toby is still in the PBA. He is a regional director.

Man what an ending to the title match. You can tell Tapp was pissed as hell.

1:13:02 This was fun to watch. The entire game was good. 53:55 The ABC bowling crew did it right back then.
1983 Aqua Fest Mr Gatti's is on youtube now

Contreras Wins!
Thomas McCarrick asshole
Nice yellow color scheme of the equipment. Too bad they didn't keep it that way for the following year.
Seems odd that Tapp would leave the pair before the match was over. Contreras still needed two pins to win. Moreover, he should’ve congratulated Toby on his win while still on the air.
I think they shook hands while they were showing Tobys' parents

He makes this kind of mistake regularly - never corrects himself. He obviously doesn't really see what occurred.

Loved watching Tapp lose after he said Goodnight Irene in his match against Soper.
Definitely a pud move.
54:40 A pro with zero 300 games. Wow. Now there are several guys with over 100
Charlie Crapp was bowling this day....jeesh. what a knob.
i miss the elegance of bowling that, in my view, disappeared with the new tech. they should outlaw the new tech
Two handed bowling is sick. Nobody thought people would do that when the rule book was written.
This was the ONLY championship round appearance in Toby’s career.
Toby Contreras did bowl amazingly well in his first telecast as he threw some clutch strikes in the 10th frame to win the Ac Delco Classic
Andrew Phillips asshole
Douglas Harris asshole
Dalton dick ass hat
Hello TROLL of PBA Andrew Phillips !!!!
I like KABC-7.
the semi final and title matches were exciting and very close
Andrew Phillips Mark Roth and Earl Anthony have bowled some exciting matches
George N. Pappas and Ernie Schlegel have bowled some awesome matches
Call me weird but I kind of wanted to see the commercials in their entirety🙃
I like the Ford commercials.
"Sit there & wait, throw the damn ball!" Very pissed off at 40:23.
😆 And then Chris immediately jumping in with, "OK..."
The 4-6-10 is made about 7% of the time by pba bowlers.
This includes the times when they don’t “go for it.”
“Watch the action of the two-pin…” err, I mean 8-pin

Charlie Crapp, if you will

Charlie should of stuck around and shook hands at the end.
I think they shook while they were showing Tobys' parents, then Charlie skedaddled
He couldn't get out of there fast enough. If I was in his bowling shoes, I wouldn't be able to get out of there fast enough either!
Butch Soper can you say helmet hair
33:59
33:59
Good final. PBA needs to BAN chewing gum. So uncouth and annoying.
Jerk move by Tapp. WTF happened to Contreras?
Did Big Ern McCracken lose the title match? What a loser. Don't shake his hand at the end. Did a grab n go. LMAO 🤣🤣
Just because you didn't see, doesn't mean it didn't happen. I think it occurred when they were showing Toby's parents.
Attention:
Spoilers have been posted below by two
pillow biters, Andrew Phillips and Thomas McCarrick
Thomas Mccarrick needs to be used as a speedbump
Tapp the walk off.
I think he congratulated him when they were showing Toby's parents. It was obviously very quick since Tapp wanted to get out of there ASAP.
