That Thomson looks good actually 😁 Forwards and back looks clean for the top cap.

I'm doing my first bike build and your videos are really helpful. I also have the same headset as you and I was wondering how you work out how many of the shims you will need?

Hey! I hope your building up something cool. I think I used 2 shims. The amount will depends on a multitude of factors but what you want to achieve is the rubber seal on the top cap to to just lightly touch the top headset cup without inducing any drag. That way it’ll stop water and muck getting to the bearing but keep your steering nice and free. The best way to figure it out is through trial and error so start with one, see how it feels and add more it’s it’s dragging.

@@MozOnBikes Thanks so much for your help. I'm building up a Pipedream Sirius. I was going to go for the Moxie, which is a little more aggressive but I already have a more aggressive full suss. I'm loving the process of building the bike up as you learn so much.

Great video! At 2:00 you mention you had worked out that you needed 2 of the 3 shims to have perfect adjustment. How did you determine that? I'm about to install a fork with this exact same headset and am not sure how to figure out how many shims to use.

I just assembled it with 0 to start off with and kept adding shims looking/feeling by turning the bars to see if the seal to of the top cap was dragging.

Hi ! Is the head tube of the bike frame a non tapered or tapered one ?
I’m trying to find a headset for my 2004 Specialized Stumpjumper Pro FSR M4 which is a non tapered and it’s difficult to find a good non tapered fork . I saw your video and wanted to ask for help .
I also saw this Nukeproof Neutron Headsets . I don’t know which size to pick . I hope for your advice . Thanks !

The head tube of the BFe is non tapered, but it’s a much newer is44 standard that still allows the use of a 1.5 to a 1.125 normal tapered fork.
Yeah trying to get hold of a good non tapered fork is going to be tricky, thing have moved on quite a bit since 2004.
I can’t identify the headset you need from a distance, there are far too many slightly different options out there for different standards that have come and gone. If I were you I would look on the Cane Creek website, it’s very useful for identifying the headset you are going to need and they have a really good database of frames.

@@MozOnBikes thanks for the reply . I would try on look for on Cane creek .
I hope you make a video about how to choose a mix and match headsets for those who are looking for somethinglike this just like me .
It would be very helpful I’m pretty sure about that . About How to measure the head tube and choose the right size or something like that . I couldn’t find a video about that on youtube .
I’m sure , a lot of us , just like me , are searching for this kind of stuff .
Thanks for uploading your adventure about your bike project ! You have +1 subscriber :)

Yeah that could be a good idea for a video! How to identify what headset you need…Might have to think about how to cover off all the different kind of options there are out there.
Cheers for the sub dude 🤙
The project bike is going well, in fact last last Wednesday it was just about finished and I took it out for the first time this weekend. Got a lot of editing to get done and out there in the coming few weeks!
