Thank you for this memory. When Katrina hit, I was going through chemotherapy for breast cancer. I survived Katrina and breast cancer and I’m here today to say there’s no better place to live then St. Bernard Parish. Stay safe everyone.
❤️❤️❤️🙏🏽
Thank you for sharing that, it made my day. ❤️❤️❤️
Awwww this is amazing ♥️💪
"We'll have a Chalmatian Plantation... where our population can roam... In our new location, our whole aggregation, will love our plantation home..."
Glad you're okay. Some of my fave people are Chalmatians. God Bless. ;)
Heck yeah girly 🥊🦋🖤 #strongwomen
Now this is a real community of good, hard-working, industrious Americans. You make us proud.
I begged my parents to leave but they wanted to stay. I told them they would be swimming, but they refused. I stayed with them at chalmette high and went to rescue my neighbor and saw many dead bodies floating. I was in a 10’flatboat with a friend and fence boards as paddles. We got my neighbor though. Sad days.
St bernard is a special place bc of the wonderful people. ❤❤❤
Im from Arkansas and spent almost 3yrs in Louisiana helping with clean up, i lived on 23 south behind an elderly lady named miss Kay a then 90+ yo woman who was absolutely the nicest lady ive ever met, we worked in St bernard parish on the levees and with local cleanup, ive got to say as nice as the people were i still call La my second home, i hauled seafood for yrs b4 katrina so i didnt have to think twice about basically moving i got to st bernard parish right after the water had dropped and was amazed to see the water level lines at roof level,, so was interesting to see what it looked like b4 hand, i hope u all in the parish are recovered ur lifes as best u can,, ✌❤
it is hard to put hurricane katrina into words. but i think looking back on what happened gives us a view of the true st bernard spirit. i was there as a firefighter and still to this day can not really tell others what it was like during the storm. its like a 30 second preview of a action movie. but what i saw after the storm defined us as a people. kind, helpful, caring and loving. thanks for the memory of this day!
Your a true hero. So sorry any of you had to experience what you did.
Thank You for being one of them kind persons! Sadly not everyone was kind and caring.
It wasn't Katrina that did this to St. Bernard Parish. It was the failed levees of the Corps of Engineers. There was very little wind damage. The damage from the flooding from failed levees was the whole problem. Make no mistake. :(
Exactly
Yes !!
What happened in St. Bernard is precisely what the opponents of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO, or the Ship Channel) were afraid would happen. The levee system of that thing was obliterated when the eye of that storm passed right over St. Bernard Parish.
Don't blame the corps of engineers. The corps of engineers didn't build a huge city in the middle of a bowl, surrounded by water.
I mean christ , it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that disaster coming.
Hurricanes have been tearing shit up on the gulf coast since the Gulf Coast came to exist.. hell almost all of it was completely under water centuries ago.
There was a reason they had to build the levees to begin with . The damned bowl flooded everytime it rained within a hundred miles..
But they just kept filling and filling the bowl full of money and people and assets.. the corps of engineers aren't anything but ants where nature is concerned.
The failure come not only from the evacuation effort.. but most of all the totally botched government response
@@TheRealSwampOperator you are obviously uninformed about St Bernard Parish, the focus of my comment. The back levees “protecting” the area from the ill-conceived Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet (MRGO) were built from soil on the swamp side and the waterway was allowed to expand far beyond its original designed width. To prove its culpability, it was subsequently decommissioned and closed off, allowing the land to recover and the waterway to shrink back.
I was born and raised in st Bernard
There's no place like Chalmette ❤😢
St.Bernard was my hometown I had moved away before katrina. But My family still lived there. They evacuate to my home. I'll never forget seeing the first images of St.Bernard on TV my sister and I both broke down crying she lost everything her home was in Arabi. And my entire family lost everything. I finally went to see my beloved parish or Da Parish as we called it. And I drove to my childhood home. I stepped out and nearly fell to the ground. Couldn't believe the devastation... Seemed like a war zone. It still makes my heart sink seeing the devastion all these years later! God bless , from a true Challmation
Thank you for giving our lives back in St. Bernard. Thank you for your help and hard work y' all did for families of St. Bernard Parish. God bless y'all.
Remember everyone that goes to jail is not a bad person
I live in London (U. K). We watched with horror when this occured. This film was a true education. God bless you all. 🙏🏻❤️
From Birmingham.UK.
It was heartbreaking to watch on the news as it all unfolded. Feeling bad & sad for not being able to do anything.
They were left to d*e. The NOLA gov has a lot to answer for.
X.
Most emotional and genuine documentary I’ve seen in all my years of still watching videos about Katrina ... to me this is and will always be the most devastating hurricane I’ve seen in my years of living to see grown men crying lets you know this was very painful 💔😢... Mississippi and Alabama was hit bad as well my heart goes out to ALL the people in every place 😢❤️ and the song at the end 😔
The Worst Part Is That Homes Are Still Destroyed After 15 Years
Banks won't finance rebuilding in many effected areas .
@@v.dargain1678 It's a big risk for the banks. Most of the people wouldn't be able to repay any loan.
What a beautiful ring. That story sent me to tears.
About ST RITA'S NURSING HOME. I knew someone that worked as an LPN & what this man said is a DAMN LIE!
The Director and Owner went AGAINST families AND their evacuation plan! They lied to families that they were being evacuated, & told the nurses that refused to stay they were cowards, the state would make sure these nurses licenses would be stripped from them and they would NEVER work again!
Thank GOD she left! This nurse was very special to me as she was my only SISTER.
Unfortunately, we lost her 1 year later to a massive heart attack brought on by the stress of Katrina & taking care of her injured husband.
Losing her hurts my soul.
But at least she died swiftly and didn't suffer or drown like all the elderly in St Ritas.
🥺🥺
😭😭
Sad but true. Lies and politics are horrible
Thank you for this! I grew up in St. Bernard and my siblings still live there. Amazing people!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I lived there till Katrina i miss it and I live going back when im in town I was young when it hit
Why did you leave???
it still is sad at some places, they never recovered from Katrina..😥
I think the entire southern part of Louisiana still recovering from hurricane Katrina .
We lived in jackson ms at the time and we felt it that far away. We sat glued to the TV watching this devastation. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I’m so sad for all the loss. This is a great documentary. I don’t think I knew all of this.
I lived in Waveland, Ms when Katrina hit MS . The next day was my birthday and my son turn 1 years old on sep 13 , it was a terrible my son was very sick no doctor no hospital and thanks to a volunteer nurse took my son to Liberty MS rescued us until my son get well and moved to Georgia.
Appreciate what Noralyn Blalock and family did for us!!!!
So sorry for your losses, may God bless America
They did not have that kind of Help for others like that
This is a very deep documentary...
Extremely deep 😔💔
Miss My people, love yall!!!!
When grown men start crying u know its was Something serious
MY BELOVED ST.BERNARD, IM HEARTBROKEN OVER HURRICANE KATRINA, DESTROYING ALL OUR LIVES AND ANCESTERS, COMMUNITY, THAT WAS PASS DOWN FROM GENERATIONS♥️❤️😞 THANK YOU TO ALL THE BRAVE HERO'S WHO TOOK CARE OF ALL THE PEOPLE♥️❤️ GOD BLESS MY ST.BERNARD, AND BRING BACK OUT HERTIRAGE ❤️♥️ BORN AND RAISED, ST.BERNARD LADY AND THERE'S NO OTHER PLACE LIKE (""HOME"")♥️❤️🥰
Even though I do not live in Louisiana, I can definitely relate to what Katrina Did to this Nation. A little over 15 years later, and some places never recovered from the wrath of this Violent storm. Heres a quote that I kinda thought of:
"Just Because a name is gone, doesn't mean the memories go with it" referring to the retirement of Katrina. Though thoughts are still in the memories of many in New Orleans.
Why this came up in my RUclips feed i don't know but im gald i was able to see this video. Very tastefully done in honor of very emotional moments.
Wow this is crazy. I hadn't seen this before. I actually saw my uncle and a cousin in this video. And my old neighbor Joey Difatta. Great guy. So sad to see it all put together like this.
St B has the best people and will always have a place in my heart. I moved away but still think of my peepz everyday!
Heartbreaking and heartwarming. What a wonderful community ❤
I'm so sorry about each and every single human life lost along with pets, houses, business, loss of security, jobs, school. It truly was a major tragedy the biggest natural disaster in the US. My family goes to New Orleans and vicinity 2 to 3 times a year just to show appreciation, we love your culture and people.
My beloved hometown I pray thry never see this again.
God bless EACH AND EVERY ONE OF U 🙏🙏🙏🙏TRULY
This broke my heart and I’m sorry thank happen to y’all
My parents lived in a double directly behind the Home Depot on Judge Perez. They were not going to evacuate. Everyone in our immediate & extended family kept calling them insisting, demanding and downright getting very angry with there refusal to leave. They finally gave in. It took 18 hours to get to Panama City Florida where my husband's family live.
Then FEMA set us up at the Boardwalk on the beach. We were there for 1 month.
When we took my Dad to Chalmette to see his house, my husband and I had to hold on tight to him because the swamp mud was 1 ft thick and slimy. When Dad walked through the front door he broke. He cried so hard he didn't make a sound. Then his screams came belting out, over and over "Oh NO! Oh My God, NO"!!
EVERYTHING WAS DESTROYED!
Then he saw his mattress which was still shoved up into the attic rafters. He turned to us and started crying out "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm so sorry. Please forgive me!"
I didn't understand why he was saying this and then he said, "We gave you such a hard time when you were just wanting us to be safe. THANK YOU FOR SAVING OUR LIVES! We would have drowned. Oh, that would have destroyed you all!"
He was 79 & Mom was 77 when hurricane katrina destroyed our beloved Chalmette, Arabi, New Orleans and all it's suburbs.
My sister died a year later from the stress of losing her home, having to constantly move to keep employed, being in a major car accident where her husband was paralysed and caring for him. All while they lost their benefits because of reasons beyond their control. Her husband succumbed to his quadriplegic paralysis 1 year after she died.
I, like MANY affected by the losses of the storm, suffered debilitating depression for 10 years. After many many years of therapy I have risen above and out into the sun again.
But hurricane season still sends me into severe bouts of anxiety and PTSD.
I had to stay for hurricane Ida. NO hotel would accept my 4 dogs. 2 to a room max was EVERY ONE of their replies.
I even offered to rent 2 rooms. ALL the hotels refused my offer stating "Due to their past experience of more than 2 pets ending up alone in one room while people stayed in the other room we cannot allow it."
Next time I will pack us all in our 2 vehicles, get out of harms way & just live in our vehicles until it is safe to return.
I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE
I'm so sorry you went through that.
I'm from the UK, & luckily never been through something like that.
I actually cant think of the words to say. What you all went through was horrendous.
Sending love. Xxx.
I am so sorry you had to go through this. Please come up north to Massachusetts if this hurricane season turns bad. We're in Greenfield and we'd welcome you.
This literally gave me chills. I’m glad they decided to leave. So many didn’t leave and or couldn’t and the local govt didn’t provide transportation out of there. Glad they made it out 🙏🏾
And I’m so sorry for your loss 🙏🏾
I’m so so sorry that you had to go through all you did. I live in Illinois. I watched everything unfold on the tv. I said many rosaries.
Hello! I’m a 6th grade science teacher and I’m creating a video for my class about Hurricane Katrina. May I use short clips from this video?
Was just there last week. My father in law is from there. It’s a very beautiful place had great Po-boys at Rocky & Carlo’s.
Thanks for this memory of Katrina it still lives within me and have a hard time when i think about if my family if they made it and god the grace of God they was alright
Nothing like home, and home sweet home from now on, and always
I LIVED IT,AND KNOW, ITS SOMETHING THATS WITH YOU ALWAYS,I AND MY DAUGHTER WAS RESCUED OFF MY ROOF,WHAT A SIGHT
I did not experience the event cause I live in Nebraska. But I'll never forget the day my boots hit the ground on September 1st. I've been involved with disaster relief, search and rescue, triage and incident command since 2001. The things I experienced in New Orleans in '05 have stuck with me for sure. I bounced around a lot down there in the 4 weeks I assisted so I'm unsure of the triage location but one of the first victims I encountered was a very distraught 9 year old little girl who was totally separated from her family and absolutely terrified. For 2 days she would not leave my side and every move I made she thought I was going to leave her alone. We were able to reunite her with her 15 year old sister. It was very bittersweet because she also found out they had lost both of their parents. At a different triage location 3 days later I happened to cross paths with an uncle of theirs and were able to reunite them that day. Broke my own rule of not letting my emotions into my mission of service and I pray those kids are doing well today. I have not been there either before or after the disaster and I truly hope the people of the city are doing well today. God bless
I understand what u went through because I was a volunteer for the Red Cross and was at the Superdome. I've seen things that will hunt me for the rest of my life.
Yes! Same. Its an absolute shame the lack of help and how it effected so many.
If you are watching this now, please know that Hurricane Ida's impact has been no less devastating, it just hit areas that are less 'popular'.
As one fireman told me 5 weeks ago, 'we learned NOTHING from Katrina. We didn't plan better, we didn't have resources planned/available any better, and we didn't inform our future on any current natural disaster. We plan for everything to be 'ideal'.''
Human nature 'rolls' with what is already extant. We're no better off now, because our leaders learned NOTHING from past experience.
Do not rely on the government to protect or save you. That is not their objective.
Optics is what rules... what people 'believe' counts for more than 'what is the case.'
Look out for your neighbours. They will look out for you. That's the best you can hope for.
It was horrific. God bless you all
My parents lived on Chalona Dr., all the way at the end, 2nd to last house on the street next to the 40 Arpent Canal and Bayou Bienvenue levee.
They had 15 -20 feet of water come through and wipe out that area.
Total devestation of both structure and ones heart and soul.
A great community gone.
Living below sea level. Not a good idea.
MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN WITH THAT STATE I LIVE IN NEW YORK BUT I FELT SOO BAD MY BODY AND SOUL WAS THEIR. I HOPE ALL OF YOU ARE DOING GOOD AND LIVEN BETTER THEN EVER!!!! MY PREYS ARE STILL WITH EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU THEN AND FOREVER!!!! GOD BLESS😍😁
God bless 🙏 🙌
The Mothers ring story got me 🥲🥲🥲 God is soooo good amen 🙏🏾

you get knocked down.....you get back up..
Praying for the ppl here and everywhere this nasty ida will hit🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
This was a good documentary but, there was really no need for the overly dramatic music. Good lord.
Nice to see this piece. No doubt areas of the city were devastated, but few reported much on this, not as if all were millionaires.
MY DAUGHTER,THEMAN MY FIANCEE AND THANKS TO NOLAN, FOR BUSTED MY ROOF TO GET US ON TOP, WHAT I SEE IS JUST PARTLY, AND YES ST, BERNARD WAS THE BEST PLACE TO RAISE YOUR FAMILY, THE BEST, AND BEAUTIFUL FISHING AND FAIRS ALWAYS, JUST THE GREAT PLACE SO SAFE, BUT SHE GAVE US A DIRECT HIT, I WANTED TO STAY, UM 😪
I felt sorry for the person from the hurricane centre who had to call the Sheriff & tell him what they did, what a shitty thing to have to tell someone,no wonder they couldn't sleep.
😔🙏
That was me on my roof
now 16 years after louisiana still getting hit just before this video laura hit near lake camron and the this year on august 29 2021 hurricane ida hit the same place katrina did
I was just in New Orleans and had it from a local which was brought up by Spike Lee in a documentary some years ago. The Levy was blown up on purpose ro save the French Quarter which has high tourism. The Nineth Ward and St Bernrnad Parrish is only about 4 miles from the French Quarter.
a whole other scene and lvibe compared to how New Orleans was treated
Yeah for obvious reasons
So you all moved back to an area which will absolutely FLOOD again.
When it happens again consider yourselves to be at fault.
I remember FEMA took like 30 days or something to help the black people they were on rooftops begging sleeping eating gathered survivors and warriors the us has always did them dirty as fuck
Did them dirty?? They were told to evacuate in the beginning!! They were lucky as hell to get rescued at all !!
Wow. Thank you for understanding the amount of poverty and lack of access to a means that prevented people from evacuating. You may now crawl back into your hole.
FEMA also asked for emergency funds and powers before going in and were granted emergency powers and funding by W Bush and never gave it back let's not forget that either. I remember us saying FEMA has Failed in their mission. Isn't that what they are there for was federal emergency management? They couldn't manage shit when Katrina hit and the insufficient levees broke! Then they piled everyone in the SuperDome for soooo long with unliveable conditions while FEMA took forever saying they need more time and money. Really FEMA? People were literally pooping on the floor everywhere in the Superdome. Fuck FEMA. And Fuck W Bush.
@@kevindubose6964 if you live on a fix income and it's the 29th of the month what money do you got to LEAVE?!? when ALL you know is NOLA?!? You waiting and hoping for the 1st to come to have some money because your probably DEAD BROKE.. idk just a thought..
@@kevindubose6964 the video told you why. Who do you think you are?
Wow, the fact that the statue of Mother Mary and the ring on the angel statue didn't get destroyed or lost while everything else is a wreck, is just an obvious sign from God.
I hate this time in my life and the memories from it. I also hate NOLA. I drove through the storm after evacuating my family. I was a Corpman in the US Coast Guard and was supposed to be excited about the birth of my 2nd child. Instead, I got recalled and found myself praying I was going to survive to see my family again. The chaos, the violence and lawlessness, the absolute collapse of civilization, the level of destruction....I will never set foot in NOLA ever again. That city should have been written off as destroyed and left abandoned.
MOVE! and do NOT move back!
Not to be that guy but didn't the female trailers give many ppl cancer since the government cut corners
When he sead we will recover I think they should of never rebuilt its going to happen again rebuilding that city after all they went threw is stupid if i lived their I wouldn't go building million $ BISNESS Y WOULD A BANK EVER TAKE CHANCE ON LENDING to build in the wake of that horrible disaster you can't live in city on coast below sea level
🙏🙏🙏 Prayer for all those who still have nightmares and are trying to cope day to day. Time has passed but you still relive it as if it just happened. I pray that the Power of God heal you from all emotional wounds and instability. In Jesus name. Jesus came to set the captive free and if you accept Jesus Christ His power if grater than any tormenting spirit of memory recall.
May American be blessed again and again turn from there wicked ways, Amen and Amen Emmanuel Yeshua Yeweh
That damn eye just exploded
I felt so helpless here in ne Texas, bc u knew how far it was to NO . BUT WHAT WERE YOU GONNA DO WHEN YOU GET THERE... SUCH A HELPLESS FEELING
And wasn't the Cajun navy born out of Katrinas devastation?
There was no way the nfl would strip the saints SB trophy for Bountys and other cheating ways. Seem like they cheating them out of another or so SB appearance. Damn Refs .GOD BLESS YAW
They played happy inspirational music over that guy saying there werent any black people ☠️☠️☠️
So what?
Protected from everything but water born and raised in violet
25:50 look at the size of that hot blake man walking in the crowd wow
People go to jail for parking tickets
I guess I'm a "conspiracy theorist", but I think they intentionally blew up the levees 🤷🏻♀️
Why would you think that let alone say it?
Seriously to what purpose would that serve. That way of thinking is an insult to everyone who suffered this tragic event.😢
And who are they and for what purpose? I've never heard anything so ridiculous 😢
Continue to repent of your sins and except Jesus Christ as ur lord and savior repent 🙏
No
And now Joe has ruin everything again!
It was obviously an extremely traumatizing experience considering all these men are doing everything they can to choke back tears.
