- In this recording, Archimandrite Athanasios Mytilinaios (1927-2006), answers the question: "Is it a sin to not have a daily schedule?” A: "I would indeed say that it is a sin, my children. Why so? Because simply it is a case of wasting time. When you lack a program, you lose your time and time is precious." He also talks about how cigarettes are harmful and the dogma of “art for art’s sake“.

I was ENSLAVED by cigarretes for many years! I repented and prayed to the Lord over many months to deliver me from this sinful habit, that I need help! Over the last two months I've had ear, nose and throat issues. The most concerning was the throat issue because I smoke. I went to see an ENT specialist 4 days ago. Before he looked at my throat he asked me if I smoked. I said yes. I became very nervous. He then examined my throat and said he did not see anything suspicious or alarming. Glory to God!! *BUT* he then told me I must do something about this smoking now! If I don't bad things could be in my future. He said I cannot cut down, I need to quit cold-turkey. He continued to say he's been doing this for 30 years and seen many fall to mouth and throat cancer from smoking. As I walked out, he said this could be your wake up call. There is no doubt in my mind God enlightened the doctor what to tell me. I will not take God's love and mercy for granted! I walked out of the office, threw away my cigarettes and have not smoked for 4 days. Thank God!! What I thought was not possible, is possible with God! I also prayed to the Saints as well. :)

I could not agree more with this Father. The only way to make progress reliably in anything is to schedule time for it, but if circumstances arise that must be addressed, the schedule can be adjusted. This doesn't seem like a particularly "spiritual" teaching but I think it has great wisdom. The Church services have a regularity but also variation. So it seems that our lives are fruitful when we have regularity but also variation. Thank God for the wisdom of Father Athanasios!
Indeed that is true supported by scriptures. During the time of King Solomon, everything had a schedule from work to worship and in that period Israel was at rest because their heart turned to the Lord God only, followed His Commandments and the leadership hollowed the name of the Lord God in deed until they fell from following God. 1st Kings
As an artist and aspiring amature icongrapher I have often heard the saying "art for art's sake" and never understood it. If art was for its own sake their would be no purpose for it to exist. From this video and my beliefs as a Greek Orthodox, I feel like it should be changed to "art for mankind's sake." After all, artwork like Icons are created for us to pray and venerate not just for their own sake. God bless you all.
I had the ability to program things in my life at one point--that's the way I grew up, w/ a degree of order in the household. When I got married all that went out the window. God help me!

Is the prayer rule for man or man for the prayer rule? If I let the prayer rule serve the man it's going to serve my passions and be subject to my laziness. I'm not disputing the main point being made which is correct, I just don't know how to apply it to this case properly.

He said we definitely need a program, but not a very rigid one. If someone needs urgent help, we don't leave him there and go to pray because of the program.

@@hugomir1604 They are because there is no common logic incorporated in all these preachings at all. No logic, no nature. How can you characterize sth that has no logic and goes against nature?
@Ameretat010 Its the same when I feel hungry and eat as well as when I feel aroused and do sex. All of these are needs of the flesh, so whoever is born human should go to hell just for the his/her human nature and needs. Every human being from the creation of the universe until the last day of the world.
@Ameretat010 Υοu talk like people are robots but the are humans. Who will define how much food can a person eat before being characterised as gluttonous? Is there a gluttonometer? People eat until their body gives the notion through hormones that I am full of energy no stop. But this HORMONAL system is medically proven that does not work well on human beings and that is the reason of people feeling hungry even though they are theoretically full. Hormonal misfunction. I am obsessed as well with my job. Will I go to hell for enjoying my job (any job could be included in that or hobby etc) and discuss about it. I am obsessed and breathe through the day. I deserve to go to hell for this sinful habit of breathing and satisfying the need of my flesh. Sorry, but I cannot take all these things seriously even if I end up in hell like every other normal person on planet earth.
Sin has a definition, if that's what you're looking for. It means to miss the mark, to miss the target.
So, for us, Christians, everything that's keeps us from becoming one with God is a sin.
Although, as an outsider, you are correct. What we are chasing is impossible for any human to achieve alone.
But we are not trying to achieve it with our own powers. We are dust and dirt, in comparison, but we are not alone.
