    Regarding "natural selection" - most of the orchids we buy have undergone artificial (i.e., human) selection, often over many generations. First, orchids were collected from the wild and transported - only some survived. Then the survivors are crossed - only those which made fertile seed continued their DNA forward. Then those seeds are sown with artificial methods (flasks, etc.) Only the seedlings that survive that make it to the compots. Then the plants that survive the compots in the growing environment (greenhouse) can be sold. Repeat for several generations. What we end up with are plants that are well adapted for human cultivation in human created environments. This is most evident in the commercial phals, but also commercial cymbidiums and hobbyist Cattleyas. Like with so many plants we grow (such as the "orange", a fruit whose origin is long lost in the vast history of horticulture), orchids for humans are a human creation.
    So yes, just taking a species from the wild and expecting it to grow easily in our care is often a formula for disaster. This is why some species are challenges for beginners - because they have not undergone many generations of human selection, and thus are not adapted to our environments.

      And sometimes, the same selection can make some orchids oddly difficult to grow for people who are good with other, more "demanding" orchids!

    YESSS !! I see Neo I click in half a sec ahaha
    I am hooked on Neos since I smelled 2 of mine in bloom last summer !!! Never smelled anything better I think!
    The minimarus are so darn cute ^^
    And speaking of nature, some people forget that there's a reason why most orchids have thousands of seeds, because in nature it's not all smooth and most of the seeds, if they sprout, will die sadly, only a few survive.

    What a wonderful haul. I like going through the orchid hobby through you on your journey. You are wonderful and amazing passing on the tips and tricks that you have learned and still learning in growing orchids. Yes there are some differences between your place where you live and my place but through you I can still find which orchids will work and which will not. Thank you for your mentoring and I still love going through your older videos as there are still some tricks and tips there.

    Oooohhhhh..... they are sooo cute! Thank you for sharing Danny! 6 months ago I didn’t have any orchids, and never thought I would either. When my neighbor passed away (an avid houseplant lady) her adult children gave me a few of her plants. Well one of them was a phal, (the other orchid has an above the dirt bulb and I haven’t figured it out yet)so I took to the internet to figure out how to care for it and found you! In 6 months I now own 7 orchids(Christmas time $1 clearance orchids got me! 😜) I am happy to say thanks to your help the orchid I received from my neighbor is getting ready to bloom!!! So thank you Danny! ❤️❤️❤️🌸🌸🌸

    Lovely Neos - I'm very jealous! I only have one Neofinetia falcata, and would get more if not for the cost. I think you are right about cool-downs initiating flowers.. Mine has flowered consistently every spring for years - it sits in Cattleya light, and gets a chill on the windowsill during the winter. It takes a bit of a break at this time and stops growing for a bit, and when the root tips start growing again in the late winter, that's when it usually it starts to mature a flower spike for me. Sometimes the tip of the spike will show up MONTHS before, but does not elongate/grow until spring. Good luck with yours! Looking forward to updates.

And by the way, flower spikes can start to grow very quickly, but blooming just for next season. They are doing this! Anyway, good good luck!

    Really fun! I understand the Nishidimiyako will eventually morph into the Manazuru. Eventually, when the Nishi produces new fans, those new fans will be the Manazuru variety. The Manazuru's variegation pattern will be the reverse of the Nishi. There are other varieties that are only produced this way as well (hence the price). Good luck, those look really fun!

    • @fuukiran1
      @fuukiran1 4 года назад

      Nishidemiyako has the ability to produce a variety of different mutations, Manazuru being just one, these mutations can either have different types of longitudinal variegation but also shorter leaves and even leaves which are more upright for example the variety Ginsekai. If I am not mistaken, there are about 5 or 6 varieties that have mutated from Nishidemiyako.

    I have a falcata, Lou Sneary, and Baby Angel. I find that the pure falcatas are more finicky than the hybrids (Im on my second falcata lol). I also just got my second japonica, my first one died from a dry LECA top layer. I think I'm going to grow my japonica in pure moss since I find it easier to control the moisture in moss than any other medium.
    * in regards to backcrossing, my Baby Angel looks like a larger falcata with pink tips on the sepals. The only rhynchostylis trait it shows is the root texture. but its an easy grower.

    Hi Danny idk what happend to my phals, I placed them in rain and water got on the leaves I let them dry but the next day they had circular indents in the leaves where the water droplets were and they were newly formed leaves, do u think it's rot? Cuz the indents r mushy and it made a whole leaf limpy and mushy. I decided to cut the leaf into living tissue and placed cinnamon onto the wound what do u think?

    • @twobluestripes
      @twobluestripes 4 года назад +1

      Nigel Lau was it cold? I recently made half a leaf go limpy because I forgot I put a phal outside and it stayed there overnight when it was less than 40 degrees F. That’s too cold for an orchid! I know mushy spots can be a sign of cold damage sometimes.

    Hey Dani! I don't know if you do video requests, but I was curious what your opinion is on orchid viruses. I've had to discard several plants recently that came from sellers with virus, especially cattleyas, and it is discouraging to throw away money when viruses seem to be SO COMMON. I'd love to see a video discussion on orchid virus - just how concerned should we be when we suspect an orchid is infected, is it a reasonable expectations that we can keep a "clean" collection, what kind of etiquette should we follow when we receive plants from growers that are infected (is this something we should expect to some extent with large scale operations, or is there onus on producers to sell healthy plants?) Would love to hear your feedback! Thanks for the videos, I love them! Have been following and enjoying for years!

      Hi, I actually have some videos from a million years ago lol but hope they help ruclips.net/video/JIOZkI7cY4I/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/17msMReSMDQ/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/BQbNBSzHe1A/видео.html viruses can be ugly, but I don't find they spread so easily (with the exception of the orchid fleck virus on some orchids). Sterilize tools and keep your orchids as free of pests as possible and things should be ok. Viruses spread through direct sap contact only 😉
