  • The hiker who risked a year in jail to save a baby black bear he encountered on a trail has opened up about his deed, saying he would do it again. Photographer Corey Hancock was hiking a scenic trail in Oregon when he came across a frail 3-month-old baby bear Monday night. "I didn't have a choice, I wouldn't have left it out there," he told Inside Edition. "He seemed to be abandoned and dying. He was hardly moving at first when I walked up on him. I thought he was dead." #InsideEdition

Yeah it was a really messed up story. They found the poor lil thing separated from its herd, wet, cold, shaking, and vulnerable. So they popped it in their car to get it some medical attention. It’s not legal to interact with the wildlife and there’s a chance they can’t be reintroduced to the wild. As far as I understand authorities did not attempt to reunite the poor lil thing with its family, however. They just euthanized it saying “they can’t be reintroduced. Don’t help them, let them die.” Basically they didn’t try to bring it back to its family, and instead of bringing it to a sanctuary where it could live the rest of its days with someone who will shower it with love and let it live with other animals, they decided to kill it as an example. Basically like “don’t interact with them, don’t try to save them, if you do well have to put em down anyway”. They’re ensuring that people don’t interfere with nature by dealing out heavy consequences. Pricks. As if it would have hurt them to let the moose baby be raised with a nice family somewhere...

The bison was euthanized because it was still a newborn, and the place it was taken to was not able to feed/care for it due to not having the supplies. It also could not be moved, due to over 50% of the wild herds testing positive to disease. In the amount of time it would have taken to test the bison calf, get the results back, before then being able to move it to somewhere that had the supplies to tend it, it'd have died.

Then, you’re dead because they didn’t want to bother to put the effort into the next step. When it’s an animal people don’t care to invest time into helping the animal but when it’s a human, they’ll try everything they can.

@@jimanderson7648 a ton of information was left out in this short clip (not blaming inside edition, it doesn’t make much sense to add a whole explanation about a separate event).
      1. Park rangers DID attempt to get the baby to return to a herd in the park but it kept being rejected
      2. It stopped eating
      3. It continued to go back to the road and wanted to go up to cars and people
      4. It couldn’t be taken to a rescue because it’s illegal to transport wild bison outside the park without having them tested and monitored for brucellosis which a) the park just doesn't have the facility or capacity to quarantine, test and monitor the calf and b) takes months
It is rare for animals to be euthanized in national parks and it’s usually only done if there is an injured animal for humane reasons.
