  • Engineering explained - from mobile phones to the Burj Khalifa (the world's tallest building), computer games and toothpaste to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and aeroplanes.
    The video is intended to attract high school students to the engineering profession, but should entertain anyone interested in engineering. It highlights the importance of maths and science and touches on chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics engineering, mining engineering, and software engineering.
    The animation was made by the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle (www.newcastle.e..., working with illustrator Jeremy Ley (www.jeremyley.com) and creative director Nick Parker from Light Creative (www.lightcreati....

    'Engineer' is pretty much synonymous to 'design', though as a profession it also extends to the people who refine already existing designs and materials. This broad definition is why two Engineers can have very little in common when it comes to the work they do; one Engineer may design aircraft with expertise in physics while another can create new shampoo formulas with expertise in chemistry and biology. Really, an engineer can be anyone that works with materials or designs something... narrowing it down to pretty much any job in existence. Even a garbageman can be called a sanitation engineer.

    We're trying to demystify the engineering profession, particularly for young people. In Australia, and many other countries, we have a shortage of engineers and of people studying maths, science and technology subjects at senior levels. We're hoping this video will help inspire people to study these subjects and consider becoming engineers.

    And I had no idea that's how they built our Burj Khalifa, and yes, our temperature do reach 50 degrees x-x. And I love the way this video was presented, it looks amazing!!
    Now I'm a new freshman to study Sustainable and Renewable energy engineering..It's something that I believe in, but I'm not much of a practical problem solver,, nor am I that interested in computer programming.. does that matter? Any engineers out there to share their university experience and say what are the challenges, advantages, and any piece of advice? Should I even study engineering, or change my major to something else?

      Hey. I myself am an engineer from Russia. Can I give my opinion, which will help you?
      Your choice will depend on several factors. Money is very important. If you have more than $ 30,000 for each year of study and knowledge for admission, choose America and Europe - the best universities (MIT, Stanford ...). If you have almost no money, then the choice is Russia, for example, the best university, Moscow State University is about $ 5,000 (300,000 rubles) per year.
      There are also famous universities in Europe - in Zurich (ETH Zurich), also in Germany and France with their great engineering tradition.
      Alternatives are Asia, China and Singapore. But I can say that there are differences in teaching. If you are not motivated, then no prestigious university like Oxford will ever make you a good specialist.

    Hi MrVman321, Engineering is a really varied profession and your work-life balance will depend greatly on your career choices. Different employers have different employment conditions and work cultures. Also, it will depend on the type of engineering role you move in to - management, consulting, research, field work, public sector, private sector etc. But it's certainly possible to have a successful career in this profession and maintain a happy and healthy personal life.

      Joe Burden all great choices but may I suggest either philosophy or ancient greek language instead of french. both would benefit you greatly in life and in your career goals more so then french ever could , but if french is a life goal of yours and a passion that gives you pleasure then follow your passion.

    • @ColossaLXGamingHD
      @ColossaLXGamingHD 9 лет назад

      Joe Burden You don't really need to worry about your subjects at GCSE really giving you an insight into mechanical engineering. I'm at college studying A-levels and the subjects at college are the ones that matter for uni. Just focus on getting good grades in maths and physics at least and any other sciences but you can also focus on your other subjects. As long as you have the grades to study Maths and physics at college and chemistry if you feel like it. You can even look at mechanical engineering lectures online to give you an idea

    • @UoNFEBE
      @UoNFEBE  9 лет назад +3

      Joe Burden Hi Joe, we're really sorry we didn't reply to your comment sooner, but would strongly encourage you to take a high level maths subject as maths is absolutely fundamental to engineering!

    • @MagpieEpicdude
      @MagpieEpicdude 9 лет назад

      Joe Burden One problem that I've seen through alot of research is that engineers are treated like dirt in the UK... What I suggest you do is you take A levels then get some experience in the UK then ship yourself as quick as possible to a foreign country that cares for its engineers examples include France, Germany and even Saudi Arabia... You would be paid twice as much salary there and the management in most companies is much better than in the UK.
      However thats a long term strategy plan but hey its never too young to plan it all out.. So I suggest one subject you take is GCSE French or German and get it to grade B at least...
