Dude you just became my favorite RUclips Channel. The purist yuppie heads spending their day trader money to buy Jerry’s full rig have become quite annoying. Dude you are a true hero, thanks for going so in depth on the settings. Everyone tells me to use RUKIND but somehow they have dudes on their telling people to crank the bass on their power amp. Either way, this was a huge help, thanks man, keep truckin!

The singular aspect of Jerry’s sound that has impacted me over decades is how his guitar seems to pierce directly into the center of the hippocampus in my brain through my ears. Maybe it’s just my internal wiring or the recording engineer’s skills, but your tone comes dangerously close to doing that. Cheers.

Never apologize to anyone about your sound. You're an artist. Any artist worth his shit will listen to everyone and take what they want or can use. The good ones borrow but the great ones steal. I would consider it a major accomplishment if I could play exactly like Jerry. If I was a painter and everyone said I painted like Da Vinci I wouldn't be apologizing. You're not studying Jerry's sound because you want to sound just like him you're studying him to learn how he did what he did. It's like studying with a great chef. What you're learning is the basic tools that all chefs need to know. What you said about Jerry's sound being unforgiving is so true. That's the thing about playing a really clean sound style of guitar. You hear every note. So technique becomes critical. I figured this out the first time I played a Tele through a clean Fender Twin when I was a young punk. I remember to this day that moment that I realized if I was going to play with a clean sound there would be no place to hide and my chops would have to be spot on. Your timing has to be right on. You also learn how to tune a f**king guitar precisely which a lot of players really can't do. You learn how to hear what you're playing while you're playing it. Jerry is a great guy to study. He was a endless source of crazy improvisation. I don't think he ever played a song the same way twice. I never really understood how great he was until I listened to him for 20 or 30 years. He was that deep. But now that I understand what he was doing I am endlessly entertained and blown away by what he played. Don't let the negative comments get to you. You are one of those rare people on RUclips who is actually in a "working" band and I bet 90% of the guys who comment have never once been out of their mom's basement and played on a stage in front of a paying audience.

Great stuff brother! I can't help but want to sound as much like Jerry as I can at times cause it just makes me feel good and if people listening smile and dig the tones then I say let's go for it!
Totally understand your point on this, kind of like when Bill Monroe told Grisman and Jerry to play his music then go out and create their own music which they did of course, being Dawg and Dead.
    Keep on keepin' on!!!

I know you’ve got a new rig now, but I like the compressor after the Q, because the Q is a responsive effect, and when you put compression first it kind of weakens the dynamic range of the effect. It also helps to control the volume of the Q a little better this way too.
However if you want something to go before the Q for more volume I would suggest an EQ, as they tend not to get in the way like a compressor does.
That’s just my opinion though. I’ve tried both, and I’d say compressor after is much better.

For any tone I use a McIntosh c22 preamp and bridge two McIntosh 240 amps from 1966 ( according to McIntosh sticker)
I place a lexicon cp1 for just up front set up and use a old mixer to interface .
I then send a signal to a Gibson amp from 1959 and another Line into Music man hybrid tube and solid state .
The preamp on the mixer end is a old peavey preamp and I use a Old rack peavey for various reverbs
Nobody wanted the old peavey gear so got those for maybe 10 bucks
All said your guitar playing is exceptional and you are nailing it
Seldom impressed but ya good work.

What delay do you recommend? Love all your videos. I've played on and off for 30 years and these inspired me to pick it back up. Stomp pedals so much easier to use. I friend gave me a new line 6 helix and I can't figure it out. Too complicated, more time goes into playing with equipment rather than actual playing.

    • @TobyDavvy

I found a tuner/looper combo pedal for cheap and I like the demo vids I've seen of it but would it be dumb to run a the tuner at the end of my signal chain?

    • @TobyDavvy

I'm gonna try to set this up on my Boss Katana. It should have all the components... compressor, auto-wah, reverb, etc.
Maybe it doesn't make a different for you, but I run my looper in my FX loop. This way I can record a loop on one channel and then play lead over top on a different channel. The other reason I do this is because I don't have any other pedals so all my boost, mod, fx, delay, reverb, etc is coming from the amp. If I were to run it in front of my amp then any changes I make to my effects would effectively change the loop.

    • @TobyDavvy
