It might be an interesting side note to point out the liberty the dead took with the chords in the chorus. Haggard played a straight 1-4-5 sequence and the dead stick that C in there which is not even in the key of D but it sounds great. I heard their version long before I heard Merle’s and then wondered why he was playing it wrong!
DAVVY tried DAVVY tried was 30+ face on a pillow now on parole. First thing I remember knowing their was a hippie blowing something on a freight train driving through the night all Toby said was hold on tight (gay cowboy). Toby said don’t cry. Bring it on down to Twinkie town
Awesome, thanks. Can't wait to get this progression saved in my loop pedal. One suggestion would be to mention what key or mode to play in during leads. Would also be helpful to get some of the licks down, in addition to the tabs just a mention "Hey, this intro is basically D major pentatonic in position whatever".
Thanks for the input, Eric. I genuinely appreciate it. That’s how we grow as a community. I’ll work on implementing these things. But as a basic rule of thumb, any Jerry style solo is going to be mixo or pentatonic while also following what chord is being played.
I’ve been a subscriber for awhile now and greatly appreciate your work!!! Can you do Next time you see me??? It sounds very different on different recordings. Just wondering what your take is on it. Thanks. A lot for this channel.
A troubled man went to the doctor. He said: "Doctor, doctor- it hurts when I do 'this'". The wise Doctor said: "Well, then don't do that". I'm glad to hear your next 3 will be Jerry tunes. I never got to hear "So Many Roads" live when Jerry was with us. I did see Further do a kick-ass one on 3/3/10 in Chicago. Meanwhile, I'll be Sitting Here in Limbo waiting for One More Saturday Night in September. You post those Flashback Flix, you get monitized. Beats construction, especially Built to Last. P.S. Delia Delilah tell me how can this be . . . you arrest The Girls for turning tricks, but you're scared of Stagger Lee? How the hell can I arrest him, when he's twice as big as me? I'm a little disappointed David Allen. Regardless, you bite your f'n tongue. YOU ARE NOT A GARBAGE PERSON. There is no intelligence without adaptation. Although a Fuck you may be, you are a very Talented Fuck. There is a phenomenon, where the lies we tell, aren't lies at all. . . They're only the Truths we Hope to happen. Speaking of So Many Roads, I'll be at The Caverns on 8/28/21 for a Keller Williams show. If you would like- We, Us, and Our could have Parking Lot Antics then. . .
PLEASE - Give Merle Haggard his proper credit in the title and header ("by the Grateful Dead") - "Mama Tried is NOT a Grateful Dead tune - much as we all love it...
I gave him his props in the video. But I was teaching the Grateful Dead version. That’s why it’s setup like that. Don’t take offense on his behalf, these are Dead lessons so they’re all going to say that, but I will always give the original performer/ writer a shout out and let folks know where it came from. But it will always say what bands version I’m covering on the By line.
Good stuff. I had to watch 7:55 to 8:02 about twenty times though cause for some reason I wasn't getting it, in the end I decided it was A 7/9, D 7h9 and G 6/7.
Yessir, Mesa Nomad 55. I don’t like it as much as my old Mesa Blue Angel, but it gets the job done. The guitar is a 1982 Aria Pro ii Cardinal Series, with some cosmetic and internal upgrades. I love that guitar. Extremely versatile. And thanks, it’s a bit unintentional. Im experimenting with running direct out from the back of the Mesa into my interface to improve my audio quality and cut down on room noise. So you lose a bit of that natural tone and it sounds a bit “digital”, which I hate. Idk, I’m figuring it out. Thanks for being here.
Thank you Davvy for sharing such a Lovely song. I am so excited we are gonna learn all the dead songs. Your solos are always a treat. So melodic. Wavvy Davvy : D
Just bought a dope, Play Dead, shirt! These videos are great. Love the mix of jokes, history of Garcia/Grateful Dead, and solid guitar teaching. Explaining the leads is super cool, too. 🤙
Thanks for the support, Gavin! You kick ass. I’ve already got a few batched but when I film new ones, I will be adding a segment called “tips and tricks” and give you an idea for a specific solo lick for each song going forward.
Toby & Davvy that excellent! I really liked your explanation in this video about hitting the chord tones on the intro. Y’all got an IG so I can flex this shirt?
Great lesson and love this tune. Need to learn the lead - small steps. Using some info from Stitch for that! Thanks again.
Hell yeah, man! Just keep plucking away!
These are quality lessons. Thank you brother
Thanks for being a part of the family, Jordan!

I’ve seen conflicting things on where the chorus goes d-c-d or d-g-d for the first line and it’s bothering me. Any help?
i can play it fine except i just wish i could strum like that. i'm also curious what effects your using?
Yesterday i went to see you're new speedway boogie so glad I subscribed definitely one of my favorite songs.
Thanks for joining the fam!

Actually davy you have won me over you're not a horrible garbage person and I think I might love you
The tab for the intro is different than what you show us.
I have a statement before I started that I was showing you the way I play it. Not necessarily the way it was done on the recording.
Hi Davvy! Absolutely love your jam. I meant the tab you show on the screen is missing an eleven about half way in I think. Maybe I’m just stoned tho🍓
