Shug, I just returned from a nice week in the Boundary Waters and took delivery of my new Amok hammock. I've been a hammock camper for a couple decades, and have thoroughly enjoyed your insight and inspiration over the years. But you can imagine the thrill I got just now when I opened the Amok promotional item that came with the hammock, a sturdy deck of plastic playing cards WITH YOUR FACE AS THE JOKERS!!! Wooo buddy! Perfect -- The jester as the joker! What an unexpected delightful treat! You have made it on the international hammock celebrity list, clearly. The well deserved honor. All secure in sector 7!
Shug-thank you for getting me into hammocking over 10 years ago! I am gonna turn 70 in two weeks and still putting the miles on out here in the PNW. I am still in trail runners, no hot spots or blisters, even with 15 mile days. Shoutout to Altra!

Tried this new way of tying. I'm a 63 year old man, who gets the nice heal hotspots from new boots. Just bought new boots. Been using this new tying method, and so far I am impressed. Can definitely tell the difference.
Thanks for that tip, here's one in return....apply castor oil to your feet, especially your toes. I buy the cheaper topical castor oil such as the Spring Valley brand (instead of the more expensive oral types.) I hike in wet areas and no matter what brand of boot I wear, my feet get wet. Had the same issue you described until I started using castor oil. I'm close to your age and -have- had cadaver feet as well. :)
Tried Solomons loved them, but they hurt my arches and had to give them up. Thanks for the ladder stunt. Haven't seen it in a while. Thanks for the laughs. Best medicine ever.
Love the Lowa's , bought them for bowhunting many years ago and have been thru several pairs. Got a pair I wear daily in the winter. Never tried them on a long backpack trip. wasnt sure how they would dry over night. Love you videos Shug!
Spot on with the lacing pattern I do something similar. Rather than the double knot try using the 'surgeons knot'. Do an extra turn on the first twist before the bow. This helps the lace stay in place whilst the bow is tied. Then do an extra crossover twist with the bow. (threading the bow through twice). This locks the bow so no second knot is necessary. It stays put but is easier to pull to undo when wet. I always wipe the bottom of the sock with my hand to clear any debris that might be stuck to the sock and when putting my foot in the sock I kick the floor with the heel of the boot to seat it back in the boot before lacing.
Great Old School tutorial. Love it ! I’m 66 as well but my daughter gave me a pair of Merrell trail runners a couple of years ago and I haven’t looked back. My feet don’t feel like they have bricks tied to them at the end of the day
Another great video. You’re right about old feet. They can’t take the beating they used to. Good tip on heal lock. And finally, yes, I was thinking about that “power” line behind you but figured you had the distance worked out..or you were stupid 😊.
I used the Renegades on a day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back out. My Merrills ripped out on me a week before the trip so I bought the Lowa Renegades and wore them around the house for a few days. I went to bottom of the canyon and back out and those things felt like they had been broke in for months. I was worried that they wouldn't hold up very well but they lasted me for about 1.5 years of moderate use before they started coming apart. I was pleased with them. I meed to get another pair! Thanks for the tips on tying!
From a big feller that tends to wander a lot, if you have time and are in the St. Cloud area swing through The Boot Shack. Kevin and his family are extremely knowledgeable on foot fit. You may be surprised after a visit with them. My feet rarely bother me since I figured out what my actual foot fitment was compared to what I thought. As for a stiffer light wander boot the kenetrek has been my mileage boot. They have warm to cold weather versions that breathe well. They will make the wallet pucker but IMO worth it.
I'm doing the same lacing technique and it really helps indeed! I've got very "long" big toes and choosing hiking boots is a nightmare. I'm wearing now Zamberlan 1996 Vioz Lux boots. Comfort wise, they fit like gloves to me, but with my long toes, it was difficult choosing a size: they either fit perfectly (while walking or climbing, but while going downward my big toes were touching the inside of the boot), or with half a size up (what I choose) they are slightly too loose, and I get minimal heel slippage. This lacing technique really helped. Having a good and proper hiking sock really helped too. But my #1 solution for preventing hot spots is simply using small pieces of Leukotape P straping tape on my heels where the hot spots are usually forming. It does wonders! No more hot spots! NEVER! And that tape will stick to you heel no matter what!
I love Leukotape. Use it a lot. Two strips down my achilles and under my heel. Also use it to hold band aids on my fingers and hands. Tough stuff. Always always carry some with me on trips. Gonna have to look upon those boots. Second time mentioned in the comments.
@@shugemery The Zamberlan are full leather and have an EXTREMELY rigid sole. They are heavy tho. They are quality-made, but the price reflect this. I'm not saying that they are better than anything else tho. Aside for the small heel slip, they fitted me so perfectly the first time I've tried them I was like I wasn't wearing anything! It is weird walking at first with those rigid soles, but when on uneven terrain, you always feel like you have a secure grip since the sole isn't flexing much. Most of the time it is useful, other timeit can be a bit annoying I reckon.

I use the surgeons knot thing and it works great, even when I lace the boot fairly loosely. I had always laced my shoes tight but in my dotage I found looser was better, but that ended up allowing a lot of movement. By staying loose until tying tight at the surgeons knot it steadied up my foot while still allowing loose in the toes. I am going to try the detour to the top hook like you showed. Hi Shug! I spend more time with footwear decisions these days. As you point out, the older we get the more needy the feet become.
Too true. I feel the same with pillows and good britches.
Toenails, why do we have em? I kinda like my toes without em 🤣🤣🤣 Great video!
Mucho appreciato....
I hear you my feet have changed and hurt every other time I go out and I'm 71
All of me has changed!!
Shug
Thanks for stopping by!
Shrub
Fun stop by.....
I recently bought my first pair of trail runners and after a few day hikes I decided I need a stiff soul.
I could feel the small rocks and it just made my feet hurt and took something out of me.
I can't abide by feeling those rocks on the bottom of my feet either. Still wear sandals hiking?
@@shugemery Not in a few years but I'm getting my hiking legs back. Maybe next summer.
If you made a video about waffles, I’d still watch it!
I do love a Waffle House waffle when I get down South~~!!
At 2:42 so you say you took a whole 1 point higher in size? Is it to accommodate the thicker socks?
Not really. The sock helps fill the void. Really for more overall foot room.
I saw that ladder come out at the end and thought ... oh no ... might have guessed this is how it would all end...
Sometimes I use the ladder as hot is intended to be used...
Slug! For a second you looked like Klaus from Life Aquatic With Steve Zizu. Hope the feet hold up. Delaminating feet suxs. I will give up toenails for a prehensile tail. Would be the much handier of the two.
Funny....I've heard that before~
I agree foot problems can ruin a hike, take care of those feet.
Ain’t no fun when the dogs are whiny!
🙃

Off topic...Is Hickory ok, any news??

Well played good Sir....

It is a phone line.....no electrical.

Thankee....
can safely skip to 3:30 for the lacing tip
Actually 4:00 to get too lacing. Be safe. Safety first. Safely skip....
Lets talk socks please❤🧦 firm shank🤣
Yes. I has some on this but cut it out as it does for sure need it's own video....
@@shugemeryim thinking cotton wool cashmere silk...
@@lindamon5101 Merino wool nice. Possum down warm but shred in boots easily. Cotton OK. Cashmere never tried. Silk.....Wonder.
I've tied my boots like that for awhile, it's become second nature. I also undo the lacing the boots come with and go for 'army' style lace, crossing inside with vertical through the eyelets on the outside.

Righto~ You are on point
Feet of a corps. oh man thats so true. I went with insoles custom made for my feet and boot. Amazing the difference it made . It was expensive with the boots and insoles but i'm not crippled. Man you had more than trench foot, has you feet come back at all ? Take care of yourself will ya ! I want more PULK and frozen butt hang videos please.
My feet came back but the nails will fall off from time to time after a trip. Maybe not though with these boots. I'll need snowyWinter to provide pulk videos. Soon enough.....
No nails Shug 2024!
Been black-nailing since 1017 now!!!

It’s true!
I'm wearing 12s now, up from 10 1/2 years ago. More comfy, but gotta admit, when i look down, I always think "they look like clown shoes." Hey, sorry, that was poor taste! But I never, ever leave the house without moleskin. Last in, first out of the 1st aid bag.
Clown shoes turn the corner before you do~~
