Not extremely fast..... but seems PERFECTLY MATCHED for the chassis. It should have come this way from this way from the factory. Oh.... and we installed an LSD, as well. Mission accomplished :)
Was my 1 st Porsche at 22 yrs old Bought it with 90k miles and ran it up to 140 K trouble free .You are right about the handling .When I was 25 ( had to wait for insurance reasons ) went to a 911 3.2 .I always missed to proper handling the then so called inferior 924 had .Suffered in silence in the pub when everyone told me the 911 was better .It wasn’t.In 94 I ditched the 911 and went back to a 968 the CS version .It’s all about the feel and handling balance.
I had a 1977 Porsche 924 in the period 1985-1988 and drove a little over 90,000 Km (approx. 56,000 miles) with it. The car was fantastic and transported me everywhere in Europe. I loved the driving characteristics and I loved the design. At the same time, however, a good friend of mine had a 1979 Porsche 924 Turbo (931). The engine in the 924 Turbo transformed the 924 and the model got the power it deserved. The turbo technology at that time was not the most sophisticated so there was a certain "ketchup" effect (...nothing, nothing and then all the effect at once), but the car was pretty fast and was in practice almost as fast on the Autobahn as the later 944 Turbo (951). The brakes on the 924 Turbo were the same as on the 928 S, but the brakes on the 944 Turbo came from the 928 S4. This meant that with many decelerations from high speeds, the brakes on the 924 Turbo became too hot, while the 944 Turbo did well. I think the whole 924 program had a pretty undeserved reputation for not being a real Porsche. Without 924 we would not have had 944 (which ultimately became 968). I also think the engine in the 924 was quite usable for its time. 125 HP was not bad when the model came on the market (and remember that it only weighed 1080 Kg) and it would be many years before different GTI models got significantly more. The engine was further developed and received first 170 HP, then 177 HP and finally in 1981 210 HP in the 924 Carrera GT (937). In the racing model 924 Carrera GTR (939) the engine developed a full 375 HP.
Don't forget that Porsche still developed the n/a engine for the 924 S (the detuned 944 engine that Porsche had to develop when VW stopped making the 2.0L blocks for the base 924 which Jack refers to in the video) that slotted below the 170 hp 924 turbo that you are referring to. It made about 148 bhp.
@@Jeff_F7 Thanks and the 924 S with a 944 engine of 2479 cm3 I am of course aware. The point, however, was what Porsche did with the original engine of the 1984 cm3 Audi/VW engine.

All fantastic cars
Great video. I had a late model 944 Turbo back in the late 90's which was mildly modified to produce around 300bhp and very quick on boost but very noticeable turbo lag. I currently have a Mini Cooper S GP Works R53 which is supercharged and gives a very different feel to an old style turbo as no lag and quite like the supercharger whine.
@@billmarsh3767 As much as I really like the GPs, it isn't hard to make a normal R53 as quick or even quicker than a GP. Stick on a 17% pulley and an intercooler and the car will outpace a stock GP.
Heavy gearchange is because having the rear transaxle means the synchro's have to synchronise the propshaft speed as well as the intermediate shaft when you make a gearchange. Double de-clutching would help the synchro's, if not speed things up by much!
Oh Yes!! I remember how my 78 924 was and how much fun it was on a slightly twisty road. I love little sports cars and honestly having too much power can ruin the pleasure of driving, at least for me. That said, a supercharged 924 sounds just as good an idea as a supercharged Mk1 Toyota MR2, and they were fantastic little cars!! By the way Jack, if you ever find a supercharged MR2 from the late 80's (87 and 88 I think) that would be a great review, short little "snikt" gear changes, the engine behind you and Toyota reliability. They were fun little cars!! Sorry back to the Porsche, If I had been offered the chance to supercharge my little 924 back in the 80's I would have jumped at the chance!! That's all it needed to be near perfect was about another 20 odd horsepower. Enough to pull up a hill with enough grunt left over to push you into your seat a bit, just that extra to carry you going into a turn on a road of twisty corners, but not enough to unexpectedly spin you off (looking at you 944 turbo and 5.0L Fox body Mustangs). What a great car!! Well done Sir, well done indeed @ Chris Madge!!
If I was to have a Porsche I always wanted an 80's 911 or the 6 cylinder 914, but this is really cool! Dad's friends at the local Porsche Club who drive the GTR-500-RS-S Compensators would be so jealous! However, for the time being I will have to be content to refer to my 2008 Mazda 3 (humorously) as "The Mazdaratti." I still watch the commercials on your channel as promised but may take a brief take to refill the bourbon. Great video today and I hope you have great success, Jack. Hope you are well otherwise! Bret
Loved the video, really enjoyed the indepth information about the car. One correction, the whining sound will be from the supercharger intake pulses, not the belt. Only gilmer belts will whine, but this car looks to have a multi-V belt driving the charger
enjoyed the video, Ive always loved the 928 and would be interested in your review or a stock or modified version. Also, SAAB specifically a review of one of their more racy versions like my 9-5 Aero
Never driven one but, always liked them. The type of thing which dosen't shout out. There are a load of cars which could be made better with a little more power, nothing crazy and this is just one example of that, the supercharger brings the pwerband changes and extra power needed. If you have a car with 750hp, don't mean it it 5x's better than somethig with 150hp. No matter the car, there are only certain speeds your going to get away with and with smaller/narrower tyres, 150hp is more than enough to get you into trouble and have fun in some cars.
Not the van engine thing again!? I'm not going to do my usual full history of that engine but it didn't start off in an Audi either. Great film as usual
Cool car. IMO, the modern equivalents are the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ brothers (followed by the Mazda MX-5 Miata, but that's not a direct matchup). Like the 86 / BRZ, nobody expected the 924 to be lust-worthy, or even fast, but the people who bought them had _fun_ .
Love the variation in content on the channel - really works for me….as an aside I saw you out in the sprite this morning when I was out jogging - lovely morning for it and the car looked and sounded great…although I think you may have a brake light out…! 😬
The engine is a Mercedes design originally for the DKW in 1.7 form 1st gen 100 C1 1968 when Mercedes had a Stake in DKW. Mercedes decided to sell to VAG and the basic architecture was used in Audis and VWs. Even the smaller engines golfs and polos used a similar Mercedes DNA. This includes the 5cylinders. The 1976 2.0 is a robust motor 115hp in 100 carburetor form. Did you know in the US the AMC Gremlins had the same basic 2.0 fitted no doubt smog strangled. Whilst not specifically designed for vans or the VW LT it was used. Its a rough sounding motor. But compared to a 2.0 pinto the camshaft lobes are wider than the Pinto cam lobes and load spread on the cam follower much better as well as oil feed. Valve adjustment is by adjustable wedge. I found a load of dealer manuals for my Audi C2 100 its the oldest in the UK.
My late fathers friend bought a new 924 Turbo in the late 80's.My dad liked it an went a Porsche dealership. They had a red 924 Carrera GT for sale.Dad was talking to the salesman whilst my brother sat in a new Gold 911 3.3 Turbo.Dad bought the 911.Imagine how much a 924 Carrera GT is worth now.lol
I’d love to see kit cars with interesting engines, a curiosity of mine has been the 6 cylinder Triumph Rocket motorcycle engine going into small lightweight cars Minis, Spitfires and Kit Cars.
Had a friend who bought a 924 and his girlfriend was bragging he had a Porsche. We tried not to mock but were so ready to burst her bubble. You should try the 924 turbo amd compare the handling and power, brakes etc.Very interesting 🤔
Brilliant car- had one for 4 years. Seeing as the original Porsche was based on VW mechanicals why not do it again? Plenty of other sports car makers used off the shelf mechanics from other makers. I replaced the 924 with a couple of 911s which were brilliant, 'of course' but not good enough 'for the money' compared to a 924.
It might not have one, early 924 Turbos didn't have an intercooler either, and with the M45 only running 5psi, that isn't much boost. My Mini Cooper S is running about 17PSI from that same supercharger so at 5 it isn't generating much heat.
That stretch of road must be very congested. It seems as if a lot of car bloggers use it. I recognise the right hand bend with the badly patched surface in the middle and the left hand bend with the uphill after it. Do you all have coffee at Harry Metcalf’s place every day?
Another good review Jack. I'm glad you mentioned about the transaxle and gear change in these cars because it just shows how a correctly designed transaxle driveline should work. The Alfa transaxle driveline by comparison is an absolute disaster. Porsche used a single conventional flywheel and clutch arrangement on the back of the crank driving a shaft through a torque tube to the transaxle. The Alfa lashup used 2 flywheels, the engine flywheel driving through a high speed (engine rpm) shaft with rubber donuts at either end with the rear flywheel containing a bellhousing and clutch! Hillman Imps used rubber donuts and they were a disaster, even with 40hp. Now imagine a shaft running at 6000rpm underneath your feet trying to transmit 160 hp, held together with donuts...! m.ruclips.net/video/wazZTont8v8/видео.html. Not dangerous at all...!!!
The irony with the 924 is it would probably be massively more appreciated and likely more valuable if it had been a VW. Can almost hear everyone saying "oh it's basically a Porsche..."

@@billmarsh3767 As much as I really like the GPs, it isn't hard to make a normal R53 as quick or even quicker than a GP. Stick on a 17% pulley and an intercooler and the car will outpace a stock GP.
Another interesting car jack keep up these reviews I like em
Heavy gearchange is because having the rear transaxle means the synchro's have to synchronise the propshaft speed as well as the intermediate shaft when you make a gearchange. Double de-clutching would help the synchro's, if not speed things up by much!
I would be changing the gearbox oil to synthetic, made a world of difference on my 944.
Really enjoyable vid Jack, keep it up 👍
Had the big brother 928 s2 manual
Great car……. Thought the 924 was a bit weedy😂..but the charger makes the difference 👌🏼all great handlers.
The Eaton-M45 was also used by Magnusson on their 'Magna-Charger' for the Honda GL1500C Valkyrie 6 cylinder motorcycle.
Bret
Nice work Chris
R52 sounds 🎉🎉
Loved the video, really enjoyed the indepth information about the car.
One correction, the whining sound will be from the supercharger intake pulses, not the belt. Only gilmer belts will whine, but this car looks to have a multi-V belt driving the charger
Interesting, thank you!!
enjoyed the video, Ive always loved the 928 and would be interested in your review or a stock or modified version. Also, SAAB specifically a review of one of their more racy versions like my 9-5 Aero
I agree about the Saab - goes like a stabbed rat when you hit the loud pedal!
Do want to buy a Saab soon!
@@nekite1 3rd gear and we are gone!
Love this car!
Great video, I've never quite got the 924, but this is an interesting car.
My father had a 77' Martini and Rossi edition, which was beautiful, even though slow.
The owner seems to know what he's talking about, no bragging, oh it's got 250 bhp, it definitely sounds like it's supercharged Jack.
Hello Jack love the review videos too 😀 😊
The 924 Turbo was a superb thing back in the day. They're a bit expensive now though. This is a decent alternative.
Love the variation in content on the channel - really works for me….as an aside I saw you out in the sprite this morning when I was out jogging - lovely morning for it and the car looked and sounded great…although I think you may have a brake light out…! 😬
Ha!! Yes that’s right, need to fix it for the Mot!
Cool car 👍
Ha! Awesome Jack
I’d love to see kit cars with interesting engines, a curiosity of mine has been the 6 cylinder Triumph Rocket motorcycle engine going into small lightweight cars Minis, Spitfires and Kit Cars.
Damn you Jack.......Back on Ebay searching for 924s....!
I knew someone that had one of these lemons. He called it a "Push" instead of Porshe because it was always breaking down.
I want one of these 924's!
Good video,
Had a friend who bought a 924 and his girlfriend was bragging he had a Porsche. We tried not to mock but were so ready to burst her bubble. You should try the 924 turbo amd compare the handling and power, brakes etc.Very interesting 🤔
loved the 924, ive owned 5 of them but sadly in the end they all ended up in the junk yard because you cant find new parts for them
Is there a full build description looking to modify mine
love to see you try and get into my Fiji Green BMW Z3...now THAT is quirky ! 😃
Hello Jack nice video
Who is the guy in Romania who made this? do you have the contact info for either this owner or the creator of this kit?
Brilliant car- had one for 4 years. Seeing as the original Porsche was based on VW mechanicals why not do it again? Plenty of other sports car makers used off the shelf mechanics from other makers. I replaced the 924 with a couple of 911s which were brilliant, 'of course' but not good enough 'for the money' compared to a 924.
I beg your pardon what about the 931 aka the 924 Turbo I'm just asking because I own one🤔🧐
Cool car! Would be even better if it was painted in it's original orange
The black is the original color, engine bay was painted when he did the engine ready for having the whole car done later!!
Thought I was watching Harry's Garage for a minute! Is that not one of his favourite test roads!? :)
He lives nearby.
Is the steering heavy? I have a 924 turbo with 177hp which is really fun to drive.
Heavy by modern standards but perfect for me
Always wondered if you could put a vr6 in one of these?
Eaton
Where was the intercooler mounted? Also any idea of cost of kit? Brilliant job and brilliant presentation!
It might not have one, early 924 Turbos didn't have an intercooler either, and with the M45 only running 5psi, that isn't much boost.
My Mini Cooper S is running about 17PSI from that same supercharger so at 5 it isn't generating much heat.
@@MrManBuzz your right. I just Googled the Romanian guy who developed it and no intercooler and very low boost
That’s right, no intercooler. But it’s something he’s working on for a future upgrade.
Cool where do we get the supercharger kit from ? ☝👍👍🏿👍🏼
That stretch of road must be very congested. It seems as if a lot of car bloggers use it. I recognise the right hand bend with the badly patched surface in the middle and the left hand bend with the uphill after it. Do you all have coffee at Harry Metcalf’s place every day?
I wish! I live very close to the road. I’ve seen him drive past but never met him.
Give this 924 a Carrera GT kit and it'd really be something special.
Whats the estimated hp? 150chp?
