Giant Marina Spider Poop a Problem?? How About Raccoons?

- When I shared our move to a new-to-us marina and the fact that we'll be in a covered boat slip, there were a number of folks who suggested that spider poop or duck weed would be a problem. This video shows that we've seen it all and more over the past 25+++ years of boating, having stayed in number of marinas during that time.
Bottom line is that we are happy with the move and aren't worried about spiders ;-)
For a look at all of the projects I've done (continue to do) on this beautiful Sea Ray Sundancer, as well as on our previous boats, have a look at nearly 100 projects in my 'How I Did It - Boat Repairs And Upgrades' playlist, here; • How I Did It - Boat Re...
Be sure to check out our 'Summer Cruise 2022' series, as we cruised for 5-1/2 weeks through much of Ontario, Canada's lovely 240 mile/386 km Trent Severn Waterway and even reaching the Rideau Canal for a few days! Full playlist can be found here; • Summer 2022 Cruise
I hope you'll also follow along with my Blog (boatingwithboo...) for lots more boating content from our past 25 years of loving this incredible boating lifestyle!

That step in the slip looks useful.
It is. And we'll have one in our permanent summer slip as well 👍
Lefroy sprayed for spiders last year and it helped. They did virtually nothing about the goose crap which was literally everywhere. Luckily, my slip has a plastic cover over it, so there is very little crap from the swallows, but the squawking can get a bit to much, but not for long. @@BoatingWithBoogaboo
We use Talstar p on the hard parts of the dock. They also make a fish friendly product called eco via EC. But the talstar p kills spiders within seconds and it lasts the entire season for us in Tennessee
I'd prefer to not have to kill them, they're doing their job in controlling mosquitos and other bothersome insects...
I recorded a raccoon at our marina climbing the electrical boxes and eating the big spiders right off their web!
I can believe that!
Boating still makes it all worth it. Life is good!
Absolutely! A few critters - when we're around before we showed up - isn't gonna deter us from the lifestyle we love 😃
Now I'm really curious about the beams and how they work to haul boats out. I hope you get a chance to film that. We don't have marinas here with covered docks, and all boats get hauled, so this is really intriguing to me. 😎
It's actually a really simple process, made easier with a few block and tackle setups. I'm looking forward to sharing it with you.
Thanks Paul for sharing the video. You seem to have a very positive attitude about the new marina as well as the upcoming 2024 season! By the way, it was nice to hear Anchor Girl voicing her feelings during the "Spider and Goose Shit" segment...😎
Cheers to you both!! 🥤🍺
Anchor Girl got a chuckle out of that, for sure 😂
Thanks Paul. Pests on boats is an important topic that doesn't get much RUclips coverage. I keep my boat on Lake Erie and live on it during the Summer months. I try to clean up bird and spider poop daily because it gets much harder to remove when it ages. I tolerate spiders on the boat for most of June and July, but reach my breaking point in August and go on a rampage with a flashlight and fly swatter after dark, when the spiders all come out.
The first time we were at Henry's Fish Restaurant on gorgeous Georgian Bay, the fellow on the boat beside us emptied an entire can of bug spray on the outside of his vessel. I guess he had enough of them by that point as well 😁
I will never complain about the dirty water at my marina again. And those damn spiders sure love boating too.
Dirty water at your marina? How so?
My marina is at the mouth of the Spanish river and there is lots of sediment and tannin in the water.
It leaves a scum on the boat pretty fast. The rest of the north channel is as clear as tap water but our marina the water is brown.
But that’s the only complaint really.
@ampegor Same conditions along pretty much all of the Trent Severn Waterway, except Lake Simcoe, which has crystal clear water. Except for the weeds 😉
Awesome video boogaboo is getting ready for boating season next year can't wait!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Can't wait!
As you said, it's all about trade offs. And you've already seen it all! You'll adapt.
All good 😊
I'm in a covered slip marina on the Ohio River and for a bit I was in the slip closest to the bank. Huge mistake. I had a whole family of Canada Goose living on the dock and they took over my swim platform. It was a fight every time we went down to the boat. We left a broom at the top of the ramp to shoo them away. They were tough, they didn't care about dogs, cats, falcons, people, they'd even chase the mower. We'd put the cover on every time and still had to power wash every week. They are mostly gone this year, but I moved my slip anyway. Now the problem is a low river and silt... and time. Not enough time to boat.
Ya, those geese were a big problem at our last marina as well. Poop constantly on the grass and docks - especially the ones that didn't see a lot of traffic each week.
Hope your family had a great Thanksgiving today.
Well, our thanksgiving weekend was a full one, for sure.
Don't tell anyone, but we just might be seeing a brand new crewmember joining Boogaboo next season 😉🐈
Boats and spiders kinda go together.
Ya. Wouldn't be the same without them 🕷️😁
The staff there clean spiders off the dock boxes and power outlets as a daily job.
Excellent 👌 Another feature to look forward to next season!
So far, we're impressed with how neat the entire location is, with nothing out of place. Those qualities are important to us and a good part of why we moved there.
Bring on the '24 season!
I have been dealing with birds, bird poop and spider at my covered slip marina for two years now. I noticed they like to perch on the rail, and poop on the hull sides, so I tried these:
"Bird Deterrent for Boats, That's for The Birds"
Amazon link is not working in a comment. It's fishing line and a clip that keeps them off the rails. They are working, but the fly overs still drop on the boat.
I have been using these traps to catch bugs, spiders and such ion the cockpit, with success:
"Pest Glue Trap by Catchmaster - 36 Boards Pre-Baited, Ready to Use Indoors. Rodent Mouse Rat Insect Sticky Adhesive Simple Easy Simple Non-Toxic - Made in the USA"
Super sticky/tacky, caught 2 birds unfortunately, but helping with the bugs in the cockpit.
It's a never ending challenge and frustration though. I was slipped at a marina once where beavers would do bird sacrifices on the swim platform, looked like a scene from a horror movie.
Oh wow, it sounds like you are dealing with a lot of creatures.
I ain’t afraid of no spiders…lol. Also the marina sprays for spiders in the spring, so we are good.
Gonna have to start practicing some Jim Stafford for next summer 🎸😁
Haulout already started in Starport....
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo you name the song and I’ll play it.
Hello Paul about the Bird Poop I bought Plastic Owl from Canadian tire hang it above my boat and the issue was gone.
I think I recall seeing one of those at our summer slip location. We shall see how it works! 🐦⬛💩😁
Don't worry about your geese. They're in North Alabama on the Tennessee River with me right now. I put dryer sheets in the bimini flaps where the frame is. Dirt daubers were there but no spiders.
Dirt daubers. Never heard that term, but Google tells me they're just another name for wasps 🐝
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo nah, they are a wasp, but they make their nest out of mud. So you end up opening a Bimini or look in a corner and they will have left a big clump of mud sometimes the size of a lemon. Then the clump falls and gets dirt everywhere. I hope for you that they don't live up north. The only good thing is they do not have stingers. We call them mud daubers.
Heck no with the spiders 🙈😂
Spiders are our friends. Without them, we'd be overridden with lots more mosquitoes and other biting bugs.
at our previous marina, we had mammalian squatters on our boat. my husband would have to go there first to clean out the mess they’d leave, especially the rotting dead fish. we discovered it was a raccoon. that was fun to deal with😮
We also had mink in the outer docks who are known to leave carcasses of their kills lying around. Rotting crayfish doesn't smell very good in the hot summer sun 😩
Well I do have a question. What is the square hole in the round access plate in the side of the radar arch in the cockpit? alarm sensor? camera?
I had to ask our surveyor the same thing when we were purchasing the boat. Remember, we bought this thing sight unseen and relied on his eyes for questions like this (check the end screen link to my playlist for more on that adventure in case you've missed it).
To answer your question, they (one on each side of the radar arch) are simple toggle switches that had been used to shut off the speakers immediately below them. Those were bypassed when the stereo was upgraded by the folks we purchased the boat from.
Paul, do you have a video of engine winterizing?
That's coming up this week 👍
Hey everybody, make sure to subscribe, like and watch it twice! Happy thanksgiving!
I'll 2nd that! Thanks 😁
We had some aquatic growth during the summer months that produced cyanide. Some people took their dogs along a shoreline and the dogs would swim. Some ate some of the weeds and died.
That's sad. I think the feared blue-green algae is highly toxic as well.
Put up an owl
I've also heard that a fake snake works as well...
Those things are huge lol i
They sure can be! Those Dock Spiders can actually catch fish 😳
@@BoatingWithBoogaboo I dock in St. Clair shores Michigan and we have smaller spiders and a few snakes
