"So now, I'm holding this pain" One of (if not) the most iconic lines. Particularly painful given they should have gotten their first win with this song but were denied by apparently shady business. InSomnia continue to fight for a first win. Their Korean fanbase is growing so hopefully next comeback (if they time it right).
Deja Vu is nothing short of a masterpiece. It is a beautiful, fragile ballad that kicks your teeth down your throat in the chorus. It is extra difficult to sort out, because it tells the story from two perspectives. You know how even evil people think they are the good guys? This is reflected here. One perspective is Yoohyeon's, who gets corrupted right in the beginning. She thinks JiU is bad (does not want to share power) and backstabs her and kills, imprisons or banishes the other members so that she can rule alone. The other perspective is reality, where we can see JiU be kind to Yoohyeon, but she gets killed for it. It's not exactly a Deja Vu per definition, but I believe this is a commentary on the different perspectives people can have about the same event.
You should listen to their 1st full album The Tree Of Language, they really showed their diversity with a lot of different genres in it. Definitely album of all time for me
Deja Vu is actually a stand-alone that they did for the video game King’s Raid! The three-part story you’re thinking of is the Dystopia Trilogy which is Scream, Boca, and Odd Eye. Siyeon and Dami actually did do other songs for King’s Raid tho! Siyeon’s is a cover of Blind Days and Dami’s was a rap collab with two guys from Happyface’s other groups D1CE and Classmate called Not A Dream. Dreamcatcher’s Japanese song Eclipse is also the second opening theme for the King’s Raid anime.
After Deja Vu, Dreamcatcher came back with their successful Dystopia Trilogy. It starts with Scream, them continues to Boca and ends with Odd Eye. These songs have a Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil and See No Evil format and they are about the evils of the cyber world. Cyber bullying, gossip, lies, fake news and hatred that lead Humanity to Dystopia. The music and the MVs are truly amazing.
Deja Vu is a collaboration with a fantasy based mobile game and the game story centered around themes of faith, sacrifice, corruption and betrayal (a very simplified explanation which the game story is more complex). In the MV, it is their take on the game story themes and the use of the meaning of Deja Vu (i.e. the feeling that you have already experienced something, even when in reality you never have) to tell the story. Basically, there are two main character which is Yoohyeon (the antagonist) which is shown at the start of the MV, and she convert Jiu's (the protagonist) throne; indicated at the start where she sat on the throne and the darkness enveloping her. The usage of Deja Vu is through the various mirrored scenes where Yoohyeon see herself as the "victim"; on the first sword scene, Jiu is in black pointing the sword at her while she is wearing a normal dress lying on the floor. Also, shown in the scenes where she is in the coffin, and Jiu is pointing the sword at her still. However, playing to the theme of Deja Vu, this never happen and the reality is that the opposite happen where in the second sword scene, despite Jiu (n the pretty pink dress) knowing of her betrayal and desire for the throne, throw down her sword, forgive her and walk away instead of finishing her off. However, Yoohyeon (now in black) pick up the sword and backstab her (which shows Jiu is the actual one in the coffin) and got rid of the rest of the members with only her remaining on the throne. The thing is that a lot of the symbolism is not cannon and although Dreamtcher does provide some liners in interviews etc. on what the overall MV and song is about, the rest is up to fans to speculate and I guess (pun intended) this is the fun part as music lyrics or the scenes can have different meaning to everyone.
First listen without pauses as you're doing now is definitely the best & most enjoying to watch, as for the second listen/watch I'm sure anything is fine, whether It's rewatching the MV & talking about stuff or watching a lyrics video etc. Also Deja Vu, best title in my opinion along with Scream ^^
when you talk album of the year, it's meaningless without hearing dreamcatcher's albums \:D/ believe it or not, many of their b-sides are better than their title tracks. a lot of their music is stuff you wouldn't hear in kpop, or anywhere for that matter. and the best part, many of their b-sides have 'special clip' videos! deja vu is just a stand alone mv, made for a game. however the theme as I mentioned before is a recurring one. in short, it's about overcoming life's hardships that seemingly repeat over and over, hence the deja vu part, in pursuit of ones dreams. dreamcatcher songs are not about love so when you see a pronoun, it's actually referring to a dream or goal. another recurring theme in dreamcatcher's discography is sacrifice and how it's necessary to move forward. in a number of mvs, jiu has sacrificed herself and the lyrics go from "I've fallen now" to "I'm saved now". going back to their history, minx was sacrificed so dreamcatcher could be born and the butterflies in dreamcatcher's mvs are metaphors for the metamorphosis. your reaction format is good, no need to change anything!
Thanks!! Yeah I'm a Once thru and thru but DC is definitely getting higher on my list! I gotta take a day or two and just listen to all the bsides cuz I agree that some of the b sides for groups are better than the title track! And thanks for the feedback! :)
I love dreamcatxher because they're always giving fans self made videos shot on like, their own iPhone, I love it! ie: Poison Love, Break The Wall, Sahara
Deja Vu is about a memory so agonizing and painful you can't let it go or move on. Like dealing with the memory, the music starts soft beautiful and reflective then plunges into hard driving agony as you relive the memory, cycling between those two states, deja vu. The video is more related to the plot of the video game they were collaborating with- betrayal of those closest. So you get the Last Supper imagery and everybody pulling swords on everybody. Yoohyeon is always getting her members killed in m/v's ESPECIALLY JIU so they stick with the experts. More related shenannigans to decipher in their R.O.S.E. Blue m/v for a different video game.
I love how the delusions are actually very identifiable in the video. In the initial scene where JiU is in black & holding a sword on Yoohyeon there is lots of slivers of wood falling around them, but no actual damage to the room. Any time you see JiU with a sword to Yoohyeon, there is no one around, or no actual destruction. But in the reality, there is destruction everywhere and the others slowly disappearing after mourning JiU's death. Yoohyeon's corruption is causing her to see herself as the victim and the others against her. When she is alone, there is only a wasteland of destruction surrounding her & her alone.
BEcause too! I feel like after Déjà-Vu, Dreamcatcher did more mature and badass concept. Between Scream's chorus, Boca's rap, the whole Odd Eye song, and the bridge and rap part of BEcause is just something else
Late but since you asked it in this video; I think it's great just watching an MV first without (or with minimal) pausing, and then watching it a second time with more pausing and more detailed commentary. Live reactions when someone is first watching something are great; but when they pause a lot during their first reaction, I sometimes feel like they're not properly taking in the song as a whole, if that makes sense? Having said that, I've been enjoying your reactions, so keep it up.
Nice review. Deja vu is a collaboration for mobile game kings's raid, ballad + rock, yeah punchy chorus I enjoy and like your format of reaction like kulture study channel dont change 😇 keep it up the great work just watch it at first listen and feel the flow of the music and for the second listen you can freely pause and give your thoughts and analysis to them 🤣
I saw your reaction and analysis well. Personally, it's one of DREAMCATCHER's favorite songs. Dejavu. How to listen to DREAMCATCHER's music. 1. Just listen to the music. 2. Listen to it while looking at the lyrics. 3. Listen to it while watching the music video. 4. Find the hidden meaning of the music video. It's too much to do all of this at once. DREAMCATCHER's music video and the content in the music video are so fun.
This is really great feedback thanks!! I've kinda of thought of doing something like this, watching it at least 4 times and just editing a lot more in the "2nd viewing".

This was one of their best songs and the song where they were 'robbed' (controversial) of a music show win.
