    Intense, profound: what I like about Kissin is that he never use his virtuosity and huge technical skills for the sake of it From his playing you can tell how deep he analyzes each pieace that he plays so that every execution is an experience, a story to tell.

    This is a wonderful performance of this piece. My personal opinion - I liked him better than the other pianists. Everybody has a different opinion and I think it is worng to argue, because we still all know that we can't play as great as he can, and even if we CAN, why bother critisize? Everybody knows he's talented and that he's a world famous pianist. A few wrong notes are nothing, nobody can play this piece PERFECTLY... Thank-You Kissin for such a wonderful performance! :-)

    Pure genius. I have only listened to a few versions and liked Gould the best. I must say I like Kissin just as much. Kissin has his reasons for everything, and I love an artist who can convince me that his works. there are mistakes because he is an artist who takes the chances. He plays this like the virtuoso that Beethoven was. I am satisfied that Beethoven would have been pleased.

    Beethoven never assigned an Opus number as he didnt think of this piece very highly. Yet here it is and it's magnificent in its own right . No it doesnt have the brilliance and inventiveness of the Diabelli variations but its a testament to Beethoven's genius that he considered it a"lesser" work.

    @magnetiktrax do not pity me. I just can discern, it's not like I assume that "oh, that is sooo difficult, and since i cannot understand whether he's playing insightfully, he has to be a genius". No, i know if it's just skill, or if there's more than that. But like i've said elsewhere: this video is rather an exception for him. It's a good one.

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 12 лет назад

    @magnetiktrax and please, give me an example in which Kissin demonstrated he was actually introducing something new into our perception of music. Please, it should be easy, genius does that all the time. Have you ever seen at the discovery channel 'freaks' (sorry for the expression) performing complex tasks, but not being geniuses?

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 13 лет назад

    @gospelkeys07 i dont think critics get jealous. i think they simply dont agree with the way he plays, some based on personal taste, some in musical arguments. For example, I think kissin is a machine. curiously, this video is perhaps the only one in which he appears insightful, it's very good, perhaps because of the technical nature of the piece.

  • @luke9o

  • @Spiciu
    @Spiciu 14 лет назад

    These are not op.32 variations . The composition did not get an opus number . Therefore it is called WoO80 - Werke ohne Opuszahl 80 . That means : Works without an opus number 80 . These are " 32 Variations in C minor on an original theme " And my opinion is that the piano player plays it TOO FAST trying to prove his technical skills . Forgetting that the MUSICAL skills are more important . A good example about how this piece should be played is Oli Mustonen from Finland . He is awsome !

  • @Kevinatmiis
    @Kevinatmiis 14 лет назад

    @EMPERORMIKI - Who - in your estimation is better? I am sure your list is no longer than 2-5 pianists long. Kissin is a wonderful pianist with a unique style. I can't see how he merits your criticism.

  • @fiandrhi
    @fiandrhi 14 лет назад

    @pianolistenerk I don't know. I hope people don't criticize him for that reason, but the criticism, which can be awfully stark and absolute, strikes me as over the top. I think part of it is that he was so hyped, especially in the 90s, that people resent that, like truculent children doing the opposite of what they're told to. It's a shame that such irrelevant considerations need enter into our listening. To me, he's always someone worth listening to, an immense talent and a hard worker.

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 12 лет назад

    @magnetiktrax no, in fact there are thousands of kids at conservatories that can. Go to Julliard and see how unique it is what Kissin does. You should know by now that Kissin is a marketing product. Please, give me ONE SINGLE example in which Kissin demonstrated an unprecedented insight into music. We could do that with Gould and Richter, but Kissin??

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 13 лет назад

    @gospelkeys07 with lang i would say he a virtuoso, great fingers, but with no inner life at all, a boy that has only played the piano, but who has no other interests in life: doesnt read books, doesnt like movies, doesnt have a girl, doesnt write about anything, has no particular opinions about anything. like a cognitive scientist i read somewhere said: that impressive technique is what stands in the way between the listener and an empty life.

  • @sirdelrio

    @darquoy total agree. Your observation articulates one sad fact about Kissin: that he is told the artifice, but CANNOT make the music come alive, he has no soul on which to mirror the greatness of the pieces. A piano monkey.

    I agree. Every great recording by every great pianist of every piece on youtube receives a stream of insults and complaints about "wrong notes" etc. But I would like to see a single one of these people as distinguished as a pianist, or play the very piece better.
    I read a lot of "I'm better" from people on youtube.
    I only think. "Oh really? Maybe you are, how about you prove it?"

  • @illulinchi
    @illulinchi 13 лет назад

    I like Horowitz's perfomance most actually ..
    And I sure things Kissin has a strange way to move his fingers o.O
    I know it's all about personal opinion and there are no such things as right and wrong in interpretation .. but I think it's to slow.
    Since Beethoven wrote Allegretto for the theme, but no one can play it because it would be too fast for most of the other variations. But I think it should be faster than what he does.

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 12 лет назад

    @magnetiktrax oh, yes i do too. but also i do not like people glorifying someone who is not what they say. i demand justice. he's not a genius, as simple as that. he's a savant. and having great fingers is never enough to satisfy my aesthetic needs. I need something else: gould, richter, horowitz, rubinstein, tureck, anyone of those, but not the freak.

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 12 лет назад

    @Randomicity912 and it's curious to see how you proceed, cause even if granting that I blundered huge in a comment, which i could sustain i didn't in front of your 'lecturers' and even some disagreeing teachers (to give you a sense that it's perhaps an idiosincracy of mine to say ONLY major and minor are modes), even if i had blundered, that doesn't render the rest of my commentaries about music wrong. That's a nice expression of your objectivity and research spirit.

    @EMPERORMIKI Ahhh yes - and who could forget about the famous Dr. Fussberg!

  • @maddorox
    @maddorox 14 лет назад

    @Spiciu technically there is never a way a piece "SHOULD" be interpreted in... as that is all owing to others preferences... i do agree this is a bit too fast... but by no means is he forgetting musical aspects of this piece... some may play this intimately he on the other hand plays it slightly more dramatically compared with others...if your saying beethoven variations WoO80 should be played like "Oli Mustonen's" then it would be pointless having any pianists playing this piece apart from him.

  • @EMPERORMIKI
    @EMPERORMIKI 14 лет назад

    @Kevinatmiis Well you should not mock people it is not nice. I mention his strange appearance because I am concerned-it is clear that this young guy is trying really hard and may end up like Schumann (not so much the mental illness but crippling his hands in an effort to be the best pianist of the day). I think he'd be perfectly suited for a clerk job like at a hotel and his over ambition may make that impossible! He really should consider alternatives because his playing really is subpar.

  • @magnetiktrax

    @sirdelrio You're quite keen on your little buzz-phrases aren't you. :-D There are few people on earth who could even memorise a piece like this, never mind play it so well. Those that can are geniuses, regardless of what you think.

  • @sirdelrio
    @sirdelrio 12 лет назад

    @magnetiktrax Genius is not about skill. The very definition according to cognitive science is "someone who transforms its field, who introduces changes and new visions and ideas, with remarkable skill, intelligence, and personal vission". Kissin has only the skill. Again, search for the savant syndrome.

    @Randomicity912 I claim to be??? Do you want to see my diploma? hehehe OMG. I knew it: KISSIN, right? LOL. And yes, I'm not the only one to think Kissin is not that great. And regarding the ONLY two minor scales, that's kind of a strawman: you said i didn't know what a melodic minor scale was, and I named the melodic and harmonic, you assumed I didn't know the rest.

More like an okay Chopin performance-all my piano teachers are from Poland and they agree with me. @Kevinatmiis I would say that the version Dave Brubeck did is superior to this lukewarm performance. Also doesn't this pianist just look a little weird like there is some ailment he is not disclosing that if affecting him? Like slight down syndrome or some other crippling disease. And my undergrad harmony teacher Dr. Fussberg actually made a recording that is also superior to this-so your assertion that there are only 5 pianists who are better is sadly misinformed
