This performance in my opinion is better than the EMI studio recording years later.I have listened this variation performed by over 500 pianists. Gilels is the BEST of all.
I heard him playing 1969 and it was stupendous. Hear he bangs and plays dispirited. You didn't hear me-I own this piece because was coached by Karl Schnabel

I really love the serious and in a certain sense dramatic way he plays Beethoven! I don't know how many hundreds times I heard this already but it's always an experience. Every single time!

Мария Юдина играла тоже превосходно , и также в вживую , но , несмотря на то , что я россиянка , стоит послушать Гленна Гульда , он играл эти вариации блестяще , ни с чем не сравнить
@@elenakadlecik6665 , ну так, может, и не стоит сравнивать? Замечательно, что есть разные интерпретации, было бы невероятно скучно, если бы был один-единственный, хоть и идеальный вариант.
Гульда обязательно послушаю, очень люблю.
Он многое делает совершенно неповторимым - например, 3-х голосную ля минорную инвенцию или гайдновскую сонату Ми-b мажор. Послушала после него великого Рихтера - хорошо, правильно, но после Гульда скучно. )))
Ещё, для меня, Анатолий Ведерников, Александр Гольденвейзер, Мария Юдина.

this is it. Grasping by the heart. Passionate at times, then reflective, as are these variations.
I have that version. And I share his option, it's really the best version by far of this piece!!!
When I heard this piece for the 1st time, it was Gilels, I thought how crazy is Beethoven? 32 variations in such short time. Something must be wrong with this crazy WoO

there's an even more hair-raising live version from Gilels from 1969, I like that one best. He really owns this piece, I haven't heard anyone else who comes close.

La versión de Gilels tiene partes bien logradas y otras no tanto, está un poco desbalanceada...

Certainly a highly virtuosic approach that may -- or may not -- have been fully intended by Beethoven (We'll never know, of course! ;-) but it's artististic and sensitive where sensitivity is needed, and it certainly holds our attention. One of those cases, however, where it becomes a bit too tempting to value speed over authenticity. An approach like this to any of the great Viennese classicists always prompts me to think "Just because you CAN, doesn't necessarily mean you SHOULD, does it?"
Pianism as exemplified by Russians in the last century seems always to want interpret "Allegro" as "Presto"and "Vivace" as "Prestissimo Possible." I, personally, believe it has had a deleterious effect on ARTISTRY among too many of the more prominent entrants into International Competitions, which more and more came to resemble HORSE RACES as the influence of such as Horowitz, and Richter set in.
Useless to argue authenticity if Beethoven's intent is unknown (as you admit in your post). Say you don't like this version and that you prefer another; that's all right. But trying to posit some objective standard of artistry because of your subjective evaluation of virtuosity smacks of hubris.

Gilels en cuanto a Beethoven no tiene ni la comprensión ni la sensibilidad necesarias, su Beethoven no se compara con el de Arrau.. Beethoven fue un compositor clásico-romántico, con un complejo mundo interior que reflejaba en su música y el cual sólo Arrau muestra en toda su dimensión.
No olvide que Arrau no sólo se formó en la escuela romántica alemana, sino que provenía de la casta beethoveniana.

En general buena interpretación.. pero .... no tiene nada que ver con el espíritu que anima esta obra. Algo desequilibrada y descontrolada la encontré, como "Arrebatos de Gilels sobre una obra de Beethoven" podría haberse titulado esta interpretación.
Emil Gilels es uno de mis pianistas favoritos , pero como la mayoría, frecuentemente se deja llevar por sus impulsos emocionales y no puede sobreponerse al carácter más introspectivo de la obra. De 1 a 10 => 7
El mejor para esta bella obra: Arrau.

i love his hammerklavier too and i hate to see that fantastic third movement ruined by a bunch of spitters who had the privilege of being there.

Listening now after 1969 Gilels performance in Odessa disappointment. Like George Czifra , Boris Bloch. Myself had great success, some say that I reinvented this piece. I think, I owned it. Gilels so pedestrian. Sorry!
i am sorry i played this piece on my digital piano with this video opened in order to play the piece simultaneously but this video has pitch problem it sounds bad both my piano and video plays together
