    Heads up! I ended up with some damage to the frame of my bike from this motor install. Check out the video here ruclips.net/video/QaQcH8AxEdQ/видео.html for details and how to prevent it from happening to you

      I'm late replying late but this is still the best installation for this install. Though not typical, this install video is the most comprehensive on RUclips. Thanks.

    After 4 TSDZ2 installations I’ve learned that the position of the speed sensor magnet relative to the sensor can have a drastic effect on how the motor runs. If your motor is running funny and the display is showing odd numbers fiddle with the magnet, and don’t be afraid to vary it’s placement quite a bit.

    Omg this video helped me with a UPP battery not fitting the water bottle mount holes on a felt bike. Didn’t even think of drilling through the mount but it was easy and now super secure.

    Thanks for the video. I followed along and did the same for my 2012 yuba mundo. Though I bought the bafang bbshd instead. Followed your instructions to the letter including the battery install..was exactly as you did (drill hole etc). . The 12" speed sensor extension was definitely required. The 68mm bottom bracket on the yuba is a perfect fit for the bafang kit that I got. Did not install any spacers, just the rubber pad on top of the motor. I did not upgrade the brakes yet, confused on which adapters I need for the 180mm setup. I ordered from Luna here in the US and bought the 52v battery. The newer style computer works for 52v setups. The bike is a bit ridiculously fast now. I think I scared the family a bit. Did this install just two days ago. Let's see how it holds up! Thanks for the video!!

    Thank you so much for this video!! I just did the same upgrade myself thanks to you!
    For others, instead of a rubber floor mat to avoid the frame damage he showed on the other video, I cut an older phone's TPU case into strips that I then superglued together. Then just put it between the motor and frame. So far it seems to work well!

    Just to clarify a few things for your install. If you cannot use the top clamp to prevent the motor from rotating, you may be able to use an aircraft clamp for your frame diameter & bolt that to your motor. You can see it in place in this video from about 55 secs - 1:40 on a trike. Also I believe the 2 ports on the under side of your display are for E brake levers if you install a throttle.

    No problems with motor rotation? I thought the frame clamp was a critical part of such an install. I've a friend who has done the same on her mundo and the install involved sinking a rivnut into the frame tube behind the bottom bracket and a small 90° bracket such that it's all secured.

    If there were room to flip the motor inside the frame of the bike, would the system work? I would feel much better if the motor case was not hanging down. I want to install one on a peddle forward bicycle and it appears that it may fit that way - any thoughts?

  • @conrom4039
    @conrom4039 4 года назад

    Hey you mention that this is now your winter bike! Do you mind sharing how do you protect it from the weather? Did you put anything on the cable joints?

    • @saulb77
      @saulb77  4 года назад

      I replace components, often. I've heard "Rust Cure Formula 3000" works pretty good, so I'm going to give that a try on some of the nuts and bolts and areas on the frame that are starting to rust. Electrical Tape on the cable joints is all. I just buy regular KMC 6/7/8 speed chains from MEC 3 at a time and build a couple long ones using a chain breaker and quick links and replace it often (at least once or twice through the winter). Replaced the rear derailleur this summer. The wheels are due for a full replacement set (rusted bad and stripped the axle while trying to get the bolt off), which I'll buy direct from Yuba (yubabikes.com/product-category/parts/). This isn't a bike that holds up to winter very well, it's just a cheap bike (Compared to our Tern GSD) that's inherited the duty lol. Steel / Cheap components..

    Hi Saul. Just wondering how you are finding this motor with the yuba Mundo. Does it have enough power? I carry round two kids - is it powerful enough for this?

    • @saulb77
      @saulb77  5 лет назад +2

      Yes, it has plenty enough power. We've recently purchased a new Tern GSD that comes with the Bosch Performance CX motor. In terms of power output, the Tongsheng TSDZ2B is very comparable. We haul two kids as well on both bikes. The Mundo is now our winter bike.

    Since you tried other OEM torque sensing ebikes, what would be your verdict on tsdz2 compared to bosch. Pros and cons, and how much different they really are.

    • @saulb77
      @saulb77  5 лет назад +3

      I had intended on doing a full review and touch on those points, but never had the time.
      I'd say the TSDZ2B is a good little motor overall, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their existing bike. Such as was the case here.
      The TSDZ2B torque sensing compared to the Bosch I found to feel quite different although they put out similar amounts of torque. The Bosch system measures the amount of torque you are applying to the pedals then provides an amount of assist proportional to that. The Tongsheng seems to be more of either it's on or it's off. It senses when you are applying torque, and it gives you the additional power. The Bosch system also seems to like a higher cadence whereas the Tongsheng doesn't care. For example one time I was climbing a very steep hill, so I was pedaling pretty hard. I started to get tired and slowed my pedaling and lessened the amount of torque I was applying to the pedals, yet I didn't slow down. The Tongsheng motor still kept giving me the max amount of assist. I realized that working harder was pointless.
      The display and assist level settings aren't nearly as refined as the Bosch. At times, the middle two assist levels didn't seem to make any difference, or the top two settings wouldn't seem to make any difference. This was probably due to battery charge I'd guessed. The battery level on the display was also a matter of fully charged or almost dead. This was likely due to it being a 52V battery.
      So short version, it's not nearly as refined as a purpose built and fully integrated system from Bosch or one of the other popular brands.
      It's done the job for us nicely though and has been used almost daily year round since I originally posted this video a couple years ago. At some point this summer I'm probably going to open up the motor and see about cleaning it out and putting in some fresh grease because it sounds pretty rough. Winter riding here is pretty tough on bikes! No issues with the battery, Biktrix does a good job with those!
      We're looking at purchasing a new bike for summer riding only. The Tern GSD S00 is the likely candidate! This bike will end up being the dedicated winter beater.

    Have you done any pros and cons updates since you’ve installed this?

    • @a46xyonix
      @a46xyonix Год назад

      No, never really got around to it aside from responses to questions in the comments below. We still use this bike as a dedicated winter, and the motor is still running strong. I had pulled the side cover off at one point and put some fresh grease in there. Frankly, it's holding up better than the bike is (steel frame mundo). Pro was that it was a great way to add e-assist to a pretty heavy cargo bike, which made riding it a LOT more enjoyable. Con's were none at all, aside that I would say a dedicated purpose built e-bike I think is a better way to go, especially now - A lot has progressed in the 5 years since I did this conversion. In fact, the store I bought this conversion kit from (Biktrix) no longer sell e-bike conversion kits and only sell complete e-bikes.

    How did you fit the rear disc brake? Did you use Shimano 180mm adapters along with 180mm rotors or did you need to do something creative?

      I actually just used the tektro ones that came with the Yuba Mundo disc brake upgrade that I originally bought (and didn't like). So yeah, Shimano 180mm adapters should work just fine. Nothing creative at all. Didn't even have to shorten the hydraulic line, was a perfect fit stock.

    Any follow up? I’m going back and forth between this and the bafang kits and would like to know how much you like the feel of the torque sensor. The trade off is raw power, but on a cargo bike (mine is a kona minute) I’m not sure it’s worth the poor feel of a two magnet speed sensor.

      The cold weather has kept the bike in the garage more than I wanted but the bbshd has performed well since my install in October of 2018. I definitely feel the torque sensor as you free pedal. The family loves using the bike though. Its been a huge hit with the neighbors..kids and even the elementary school. That thing is so fast now.. Scary fast. Thanks to Saul for posting this video. Gave me the courage to do the whole thing.

    Hi! How hard do you have to peddle in the turbo setting to get maximum power assistance? Is it above the "sweating threshold"?

    • @saulb77
      @saulb77  6 лет назад

      Not very hard. I've noticed that this motor responds to a far lower cadence than the Bosch for example. I realized this once when I was climbing a very steep hill. I was peddling very hard, until I started to get tired. Once I tired out and slowed my peddling down I noticed that I didn't slow down at all. After that I relaxed and peddled lightly and let the motor do the work. It handled the hill with ease. Its polar opposite to my Bosch ebike. The Bosch motor really wants the higher cadence and balances the amount of power it provides to your torque and cadence. This motor just doesn't care, it puts out the full amount of torque at a low cadence and once it reaches it, it doesn't matter if you pedal harder. It's a powerful little motor and it moves this Yuba Mundo with ease up pretty steep hills, with kids and cargo.
