THE THE, one of the most acclaimed and cherished bands of the last few decades, have announced details of the release of 'Ensoulment', their first studio album of new songs in a quarter century.
THE THE’s new single ‘Cognitive Dissident’ is co-produced by Matt Johnson and Warne Livesey and written by Matt Johnson and Barrie Cadogan, who are joined by other long-standing THE THE stalwarts James Eller (bass), DC Collard (keyboards) and Earl Harvin (drums) plus Gillian Glover (backing vocals). The cover artwork for this single is a previously-unpublished work by Andy Dog.
Johnson says about the subject matter of the new single, “We certainly live in interesting times. The world is becoming more inverted, weird and hallucinogenic by the day.” The video is animated by Craig "Goonzi" Gowans at 12 Inch Media. Soon to be revealed is a stunning music video by long-time THE THE collaborators - director Tim Pope, People Like Us (Vicki Bennett) and Peter Knight.
Encompassing characteristic topics ranging from love & sex, war & politics, life & death - to the meaning of what it is to be human in the 21st century - Ensoulment was written, demoed and mixed at Studio Cinéola in London, the base of THE THE’s main creative force, Matt Johnson. The songs were further refined in rehearsals ahead of a six-day session at Real World Studios near Bath, where Matt was joined by long-standing THE THE members James Eller (bass), DC Collard (keyboards), Earl Harvin (drums), and Barrie Cadogan (lead guitar). The album also marks the return of co-producer and engineer Warne Livesey, who previously worked on landmark THE THE albums Infected (1986) and Mind Bomb (1989). Additional performances include Gillian Glover (backing vocals), Terry Edwards (horns), Sonya Cullingford (fiddle) and Danny Cummings (percussion).

If you are here, I presume you have been touched by Matt Johnson and his music. We're a smallish group as far as "band" fan bases go, but I have to believe that we are a rather heady lot. We knew that the music was never about aural pyrotechnics; instead, it offered a uniquely thoughtful sound created/played/performed by brilliant musicians combined with Mr. Jonhson's incredibly insightful lyrics that seemingly reached into your heart and soul ... and shredded it. Brutally. Beautifully. Lovingly. Humanly. My life was enriched by this man's music from whence I first heard it in the early 1980s (Thank God/Shout Out for the old KLBJ radio in Austin, as well as 120 Minutes on MTV, and the occasional video one would catch from MuchMusic out of Canada) as a young man growing up in San Antonio, Texas. And it still is. See you in Los Angeles.
My first song by the the i ever heard was kingdom of rain and I was hooked and that song is still my favourite by them.
I first heard burning blue soul in 1981 as my neighbour had just bought a copy, been a fan ever since
Helpline operator reeled me in.
Lol, also an old KLBJ listener here, but my first exposure to The The was a copy of Soul Mining that a buddy lent me on cassette. Loved it! I remember trying to convince some guys I was playing with to cover "That Sinking Feeling" (sadly they didn't want to). Actually met Matt Johnson at Superbooth (a synth expo in Berlin) a few years ago when he came through the Dreadbox booth...chatted a bit...really nice guy.
Life is better when The The has new music.
❤
Back with a bang! The most underrated GENIUS of proper music in a league of his own ❤.
I was introduced to The The by a Some Bizarre sampler cassette entitled "If You Can't Please Yourself, You Can't Please Your Soul" and have bought every release since. Always incredible!
The world needs The The!
❤
Born in '76, first contact with his music in '89...a constant mainstay throughout my life ever since! Saw Matt in '93 in Berlin. I am delighted to hear new music by this amazing artist!!! Can't wait for the album to be released...
Matt's voice has just gotten better with age. Dark, gravelly, sexy. This sits up there with his best tracks. I can't stop listening to it. The The has been my favorite artist for over 30 years and I am so excited for new music and a new tour.
One of the few singers from the eighties who sound as good as he used to.
Sounds like a classic The The track. And by classic I mean soulful, dark, restless and totally groovy. Welcome back, Matt!
This is impressive, and that voice....what a talent Matt Johnson is . I'm looking forward to their new album
Great to hear Matt back.
I really find it hard to dislike any the The track. Thanks Matt, thanks for all your hard work and thanks for bringing the The back!
You need to hear some more of what he's produced - under the name Matt Johnson not The The like the albums 'See without being seen' and 'Burning blue soul' - even for a longtime and devoted fan like me there are some tracks on them that are hard to listen to!
Sits comfortably amongst The The's classics. See you in Toronto.
Matt can still do it. Was there ever a doubt...
Wow that riff, that urgency, those insightful lyrics and those unmistakable TheThe chords...just got my 02 Brixton Academy seats. Looks like it will be the same band as in 2018, which is a very good thing. This has made my day.
This is the best thing The The have done in years.
We Can't Stop What's Coming is awesome, but that was some years ago. 2017.
If the music and lyrics don't get you, the Cognitive Dissident will.
I literally cannot get enough of The The. Not one single bad song in years
TheThe was the soundtrack of my student days and many years thereafter - great to get a new album and this was an awesome cut. Cant wait to hear the album!
Thank you Matt, great to have you back! all the best from Norway!
Matt is pure genius, and his music touches and changes the spirit and soul - eternally. Some of the greatest musical art I have ever known in my lifetime, since 1980. So grateful for a new album!
Bloody brilliant , Welcome back Matt can't wait for the new album,
YEAH!! Finally a new album!! And a great first track!! Good to have you back! I love again..
Love the Bass and the Riff and the downright dirtiness of this track - Can hear Little Barrie's influence on the writing for sure! Made my year hearing this!
the THE are back!
Barrie Cadogan cowritten the song with Matt
Stunning new single. This is the 7th or 8th time I've listened to it today, but the first time seeing the video, and it's all splendid every time. Groove and gravitas, humorous and disconcerting, gentle and concerning, and the end is a sublime dissolution of the before. Bravo.
Cannot wait for the LP and the tour.
This is phenomenal! Chills every time I hear it. Been in awe of Matt and The The since 1980 and my playlists are still filled with their timeless songs. I’m thrilled for this LP to drop, Thank you Matt and everyone who’s made this possible. Will see you on tour. 🤩
Yes yes yes. Sweet Mercy, the world needs this album!! Can't wait
Love it! Great guitar sound 👌 Can't wait for the album!!
Headphones. Loud. Chills down your spine. Matt is back with a bang.
Oh YESSSS I'm on cloud nine... amazing news.... loving the new single...
Top entertainment for bleak times. What The The do best
If this track is any reflection of the album, it is going to be amazing. So happy to hear lyrics that are as poignant as ever. I'm just so absolutely well impressed. And I'm remembering that feeling I used to get on hearing a new album from The The.
Spectacular!
YESSS!! Nothing better than something new from The The! So great to see old friends James Eller smoking that bass riff & DC Collard on keys. This is classic MJ and crew. I'll travel far to see this tour 👍🏽
Love the artwork and looking forward to hearing the album.
Glad I’m still around to hear this. Your friend Grandpa
This is fantastic, and I've played it on repeat for nearly an hour. I am (restrainedly) giddy.
God is back!
He‘ll never be away 💪♾
@@adrianjones5941 although I reckon hes an atheist!
Oh yeah it's been a long time coming
YES!!! Love it ! Can't wait to hear the rest and of course to see THE THE live !
If this track is anything to go by, the album is going to be blinding...welcome back Matt, The wait has been truly worth it...
Great song. Disturbing picture. Coooolll! 💜🖤💜
Andy Doggs work
@@GalaxyGamer_YT665 so it's even cooler that the original album cover artist is doing it now
Oh this is brilliant, really sounds perfect. Getting serious infected vibes, love it.
Nice to see The The is awake and hasn't sold out to the establishments narrative 👍🏻
A lyrical and musical antidote for our now limited free speech and monitored lives (though some of us work for the former and against the latter). Thanks again Matt.
This sounds awesome, as only Matt Johnson can sound! Can't believe he is back with new The The album! 😍
Just the other day at work I was thinking about my CD of 'Dusk' and wondering where Matt has been. Now I know. Very good.
He almost disappeared completely and when he dropped We Can't Stop What's Coming back in 2017 I was completely blown away. He's back again and with a bang.
As usual - brave and brilliant with that slightly uncomfortable vibe indicating that something isn’t quite right with the world. Mr Johnson is back to save music and to wake us all up. Can’t wait for the album - it’s been long overdue 😊👌
Awesome! That signature sound is literally the "music to my ears" that I've been waiting for. Love it!
Heard this a month ago and liked it but didn't give it another thought, then I wake up this morning with it playing in my head so here I am again!
The right song with the right message putting into words what we have been feeling for a long time now.
Having listened to this on repeat MANY times, and absorbing these brilliant lyrics, all I can say,is if the forthcoming album is as great as this,it will be among the greatest EVER
been listening to your music since the time of cassette tape!
He's not lost it!
Was there ever a doubt. Back in 2017 when he dropped We Can't Stop What's Coming, I said the exact same thing. The man almost gets better with age.
My hubby and me got together because of our mutual love of The The
THETHE are BACK!!
Oh my gosh Matt!!!😭 you, and your music have been in my soul since 1983❤❤Soul Mining is my heart.
I'm SO happy right now! Waited all these years to see you live! I got tickets to the Denver colorado show 8th row!!!
Social commentary that hits you right between the ears as always.....To be both at once instantly recognisable yet not sound dated nearly 20 years later is no small feat.
A fantastic return! Matt sounding brilliant as ever, looking forward to Ally Pally in September
Matt and The The crew never disappoint. A fan since release of Soul Mining, always will be. Helped to get me through mine and the cognitive dissonance all around me. Kudo's once again.
Could have thrown the lyrics up with the animation, Matt's lyrics are legendary as the music. Big Love.
Yessssssssssssss there back!!!
I so dig/love the groove on this - a live tour and new album? Something to (finally) look forward too.
The 7" single three-packs sold REALLY fast. What are the chances you could add a few more for sale? I saw them, went to order, and they were already gone. Please make more!
Great lyrics and song. 1984 is with us unless we resist. Do not comply.
"comply" to what?!
Fantastic !
Love the blinking eye!!!
Great song! And the announcing of a new album + seeing you live in september makes this year the best in ages!! 🎉
Excellent 🎉
SO GOOD to hear your voice again!
I used to moan about the 3 year waits between albums..on behalf of my younger self I unreservedly apologize. I’m giddy with excitement
Waited many years for this! Wonderful.
Warto było tak długo czekać! Dziękuję!
The The lo más grande!!! alguna vez vendrá a Chile?
Great news! Been listening to Mind Bomb recently and it sounds like it was written today. Really looking forward to hearimg this new work.
So true, many years ahead of it's time, nothing has changed in the world. If we've ever been visited by people from another world, they probably thought, no need to take this lot over , they'll wipe each other out , given time.
Simmering, lustful, just what you want from Mat and The The, love it !
LOVE IT.....LEFT IS RIGHT
If you can't change the world. Change yourself.
And if you can't change yourself.... change the world! 😂
Phew! He's back! 🎉
Welcome back, old friend! 🔥
Well, let's just say I'm resonating with these lyrics. James Eller driving it here. Love.
Fantastic Matt!!!
I love The the , yeah! Such good music. If I only had more money
Tour in Tampa? Concert for real
¡ GRUPO ÉPICO !
😎👍🏼
Welcome back Matt!
Better late than never, and it sounds great!👊
Great as ever
Awright! The The is back!
quality track - classic The The
Even though Johnny Marr couldn't do it, his suggestion to Matt to call Barrie Cadogan instead, was genius. Barrie is an awesome guitar player, great choice and a perfect fit.
so Matt did try getting Johnny for the album again? Where'd you get this from
Luckily we know he still writes and sings. Obviously we know he delivers.
Sounds ace Matt! We love you & the band. Hope to see you soon. x
Way too short, but what a tune! Welcome back Matt, just wish Johnny and the old gang were there with you..
They are except Johnny
Matt Johnson inmortal
Beautiful, as always, love your work Matt...
Love it!
❤❤❤
This is brilliant, I've missed The The, Matt Johnson is a genius.
Superb..just superb!!!!
Oh god this voice soothes my soul and I’m so incredibly happy there is more The The happening!!!!! 💙🙏🏼💙🙏🏼
Can't wait for the àlbum. Bring it on. I've got him under my skin where the rain can't get in.
Love it,roll on September
This sounds great!!
Fantastic.. good intro to the album..
Holy crap! What a jam!
Wow. Imagine at that age travel on tour. ,, buzzing. I guess.
