As a full time professional artist and Bookbinder, my absolute favorite paper is Saunders Waterford. I make my own line of luxury Hardbound goatskin leather watercolor sketchbooks with all of the choices of the professional artist grade 100% cotton papers. I buy most of my paper in rolls when available, and bulk imperial sheet orders if rolls aren't available. It's hard to find the rolls of Saunders Waterford in America too. I actually buy my Saunders Waterford rolls from a bookbinding company named " Talas ". They carry Saunders complete range of papers, in rolls and Imperial sheets. The Arches rolls come in 45" x 10 yards and are much cheaper than the Saunders rolls. Since I use Saunders from my Artwork, and for Binding... I buy alot lol. The Saunders rolls are twice the price of Arches, but their rolls are MUCH larger! The Saunders rolls are 68" wide and 11 yards long... plus they usually have a extra foot or 2 after the 11 yards, so some rolls are close to 12 yards long! Saunders rolls are also packaged much better, the box it comes in is Cleary marked " acid free cardboard " and the roll is completely wrapped in a static free polyethylene uncoated plastic. Arches rolls are in a box, but I can't find anywhere that their box is acid free like Saunders is, and the rolls just sit bare inside the box. I do like Arches, but they always have sizing issues... some spots are overly sized and you get these white dots that show up all over the place, after your paint has dried. I like Fabriano's soft press and their handmade series of papers ( very exspensive )... but I don't like their other papers. All in all, Saunders is a far superior paper in every way! And I see people that have been raving about Winsor and Newton watercolor paper, up until recently. That's because Saunders Waterford's mill was making Winsor and Newton's paper, but have recently stopped... so Winsor and Newton's paper has completely changed over night, that because Saunders isn't making it anymore... its a different mill that makes their paper now. alot of people are very dissatisfied by this sudden change, because its completely different now. Buy Saunders Waterford paper, if you loved the old winsor paper. Saunders Waterford also makes amazing paper for Printmaking. I hand marble my own paper for end pages and wrapping things. If any of you have never tried Saunders Waterford, because it is more exspensive, or because it's less talked about... iam telling you, try it out and you will fall in love with it. Saunders is the best Watercolor paper, by leaps and bounds over Arches and Fabriano. Rolls are far much cheaper than those pads and blocks, pads and blocks are a complete rip-off. Hope you have a good one

I have been painting for many years (on and off), after taking a workshop with the famed American watercolorist Tony Couch. Your explanation of the paper is the best I have ever heard. Even though I knew about weights, finishes and sizes, your honest review of brands was very helpful. This is the first time I heard about Fabriano using more glue, and some brands of the same weight not staying wet as long because of this. Thanks ever so much for sharing your talents with the world. You are an excellent example of how one person can make a positive difference to the lives of so many.

Oh Wow!!! Many, many thanks for your knowledge, and experienced wisdom. I started watercolors many years ago, but moved to photography profession forgetting about the power of watercolor. And now after pandemic I started once again to love it and was looking for good quality education on this artistry. Back in time, I used to join a local watercolor association of artists and remembered the importance of using the best water color paper and many artists the invited to share their technique. What a treat! I've always used Arches paper but now, looking forward to try the Waterford. I also want to say that knowing you did a Masters, and kept searching to understand the medium and what works for you, made my journey more ease to understand issues I was having with the paper, after returning to practice on the medium. Truly Grateful for your mastership, You are a true master!!!

Interesting point....I tried Moulin du Roy paper and would get single sheets at Hobby Lobby when they stocked it. I also like Lanaquarelle. Thank you so much! Looking forward to the next one on brushes.
