When I was in music class in the first year of high school the teacher demonstrated all the instruments to us, to choose the next day. When it came to me I said I wanted to play the tuba. When the teacher said he would give me one to have at home for the school term, because they were so big, I was surprised. I said no, I want to play that (making a swirly motion in front of me) thing. Oh, you mean the French horn. I was pretty bad, after switching to trumpet for a few years, I was much better coming back to French horn. Part of the problem was that the second horn for high school was a pretty poor instrument compared to the horn used by the higher grade player. One day a substitute teacher got me to get the better horn out, and I was way better. Oh by the way, someone who did give up playing in the Berlin philharmonic was flutist James Galway.
Maybe, for me as a German it's not easy to tell, but what amazes me is how good she pronounced the few German words she spoke. "Mucksmäuschenstill" is really a challenge for a native English speaker, but she mastered it brilliantly. She might even be able to correctly pronounce "Streichholzschächtelchen" which so far no other British person was able to do.
