Regardless of politics or war, Soldiers will ALWAYS put on a brave face and demeanour in front of civvies, for civvies have NO IDEA what they have been through....
This film hurts my heart.. and this very song finishes me off.! I had a lovely grandfather who was a WW1 veteran and served throughout the conflict, he never spoke of it and would not answer my questions and it was only his cronies who told me about him, on the QT.! He died in 1975, aged 85.. and I miss him still. So often in my thoughts. The pal of my childhood and youth. Happy days. WF
My grandpa was same age as yours, served in that war, but died in 1955 at age 65. I wished I could have met him. But I did meet his 2 years younger brother at a family reunion in 1964, but I was a little shaver then. I remember he looked a lot like Grandpa's pictures.
Yo the starship troopers level of Satire "we'll have you back the front in no time" live it I got to check this shit out honestly it's in my movie to do list
"Don't worry, we'll soon have you back at the front." That is probably the worst thing they could possibly hear. Imagine going through literal shot and shell, nearly being killed, getting taken all that way back home to be treated, all whilst still in pain, only to be told that once your well your off to do it again.
Whenever I watch this scene I think of the sergeant. He's probably old enough to have served in the 2nd world war, and his dad the first. I think his orders were an imitation of things he heard himself, not just pretending like actors now.
So was my father, 2nd Battalion in Burma! I've visited Durham Cathedral many times and love it. Dad died 17th December; I was with him. Miss him very much.
Isn’t the entire main entrance a memorial to WW1? Or is it another war? Edit: Yes just looked up. The main entrance was rebuilt in 1922 with a ‘victory arch’ as a memorial to WW1. “ The main pedestrian entrance, the Victory Arch (known as Exit 5), was designed by Scott and is a memorial to company staff who were killed during the war. Upon opening, it marked 585 employees who had been killed in World War I. It was flanked by two sculptures featuring Roman goddesses; "1914" with Bellona in armour with a sword and torch, and "1918" showing Pax, the goddess of Peace sitting on Earth”
@@xr6lad Thank you Mr Lad, you are correct. That entrance from the street is not used by most people now, but I do remember I used to pass through it at night when I would be walking as a young student from night school. Best wishes, Robert Wilson
One of the very rare clips from this unique and wonderful film ( on RUclips) where viewers ARE allowed to comment WHY? For most of it's existence, it has been suppressed and NOT promoted . Perhaps the warmongers get worried by the truth
Lyrics: Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, And smile, smile, smile, While you've a lucifer to light your fag, Smile, boys, that's the style. What's the use of worrying? It never was worth while, so Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, And smile, smile, smile.
Well, not quite to me, but I'm thinking Virginia. 😆 I was a field rep for an international company based in Bradford, UK, for 18 years. The U.S. headquarters was in Suffolk, Virginia. And when I flew there for a meeting or training, I'd have to fly into Norfolk, Virginia airport and rent a car. It still amazes me how the New World mirrors the Old World, and here I thought they wanted to get away from all of that and start new.🤷♂️
My great great granda turned his back for one second on his friend and turned around after hearing a bang to see him decapitated, still trying to fit a cigarette in his mouth
Olivia Adamson I think you mean WW2? The last soldiers are long gone from WW1. Even if you were born in 1900 and were only 18 in 1918, you’d be 118 now.
To be fair, the British PM lost a son, over 20 MPs died in WW1, the soon-to-become King George VI was at Jutland and Churchill even went to fight at the front.
@@darrenkewley3879 yes but WW1 above all other wars was a war of mans hubris between royal children wanting to play army. So much death for such a stupid reason. In my opinion at least. Though it did mark the end of an era in human culture and society. The monarchy was dead after WW1. And lets not forget Churchill resigned in disgrace after Gallipoli.
My father served in WW2. He didn't like to speak of it. he's gone now, miss him loads
He, wouldn't the brave, never do, Dear lord, we will remember them

Nah its ok. Now they learned the bosses patterns they'll do better. WW1 was basically the darksouls of trench warfare.
It was almost make you want to ‘fake it’s or slap someone that said that.
Now every time I get seriously hurt I think of this scene.
Does this occur frequently? O.o
Funny how it still effect us to this day

Thanks for making this visual on RUclips it stands for respect and enjoyable entertainment
Seeing the camera pass the line of soldiers reminded me of the England football team before a game. 😁
My father was in the Durham light infantry WWI proud to be British if you get the opportunity visit Durham cathedral 💞💞

I like how that one soldier has a pickelhaube as a trophy.
Waterloo Station took many hundreds of thousands of servicemen to the front and returning from the front in the Great War.

It's on Netflix now, that's where I saw it.
I can't seem to find it. Is it not on US Netflix?
Maybe not, I have UK Netflix :/ Sorry.
What is this film called
Charlie Fillingham "Oh What A Lovely War!"
Lyrics:
Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag,
And smile, smile, smile,
While you've a lucifer to light your fag,
Smile, boys, that's the style.
What's the use of worrying?
It never was worth while, so
Pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag,
And smile, smile, smile.
Don't worry, we'll soon have you back at the front - I bet that cheered him no end(!)
Just a bit too short. This clip is missing some lines I still recall after many years. "Hooray! Mafeking's been relieved!" "I'll have you Burgess!"
As they form up you can see the PTSD on every face. No therapy for them though.
No “PTSD” there
They’re all hard men and didn’t grow up playing PlayStation
True. And they called it "shell shock" back then.
High suicide rates after every war, even today.
The one War Film that should be shown every year....😑
Grab yourself a laser lad and serve your queen

The people singing this sound like that they have a tinge of the Norfolk/Suffolk accent; to me at least.

Is it me is there a West Country tone to the singing in this one?

Why is it you can’t even get this movie as a digital download for purchase. Suspicious because it’s anti-war?
Thanks my great granddad was in this war and got shot in the arm and he’s still alive today also he sang both of these ( bless my granddad )
second world war you mean, and respect to your grandfather
