@@synth4ever I like it. I hadn't seen one since the early 90s in a studio. Never really heard it's sound until now in your video. I'll consider buying Behringer's version when it comes out.
Perfect demo- and if you’ve noticed an increased view count recently, that’s likely from me. My 6 month old daughter is mesmerized by your demo. Between this and Switched-On Brandenburgs, she can be snapped out of the most ear splitting crying fits as soon as we turn it on. For that alone, her father and I are so grateful to you!
Joie Hinton used this as his favorite synth on much of Ozric Tentacles discography and live gigs. It is responsible for most of the bubbles/spirals/fizzles/quacks/squiggles and other LFO/resonance effects you hear laced incesaantly throughout their music. Fascinating to see it up close. Cool video.
I bought one of these back in 1987 at a pawn shop in Hollywood for $145. Didn’t really know what I had at the time. I traded it in 1993 for a darkroom enlarger. Stupid stupid stupid. Man I wish I had it now. This along with my ARP 2500 sequencer cabinet… which I sold for $400 in 1995.
An absolute monster. All the original System-100 vibes in a more playable and portable form factor. Strangely ignored piece of synth history given how AGGRESSIVE it can be. Huge sounding.
Beautiful synth and demo (as usual). The "Green Synth" era of Roland was one of my favorites. BTW, congratulations on your inclusion in the epic documentary "Land of the Rising Sound" by Alex Ball. A great tribute to Roland.
Thanks David, I was honored to contribute to Alex's documentary. Certainly the SH-5 and other "green synths" from that era have a unique sound and tone which to this day has yet to be reproduced IMO. They are amazing instruments.
Way back in the 1970s, a friend who worked at a music store (I had bought a Rhodes Stage 88 from him) would get new synths in and loan them to me for a weekend to fool with and let him know what I thought of them. I loved this one, had a really great time with it. Wish I could've afforded to buy it at the time. Still have the Rhodes 'though.
That's super cool you had a friend that would let you try all those synths! The SH-5 is indeed a lot of fun and full of character. Nice that you still have your Rhodes at least!

That is awesome!!! Behringer recently announced that they're beginning to ship the MS-5, their version of the SH-5. That's rather exciting news because the pricing for the new MS-5 will be about 1/10 of what these Roland SH-5 beasts are going for now on the used synth market.
This is an incredible mono synth. I really wish I could get one but I already have 3 mono synths. I can't justify it. You make this one sound so good though
Thanks Luke. It is very versatile for sure and has such a unique sound. They are getting quite pricey these days though... if you like it, would you ever sell some monos to make room for an SH-5 in the future?
@@synth4ever it's tempting but no. I have 3 that cover what I need from mono synths. It's the poly synths that I now am looking to add. The SH-5 is a very nice synth though. If I was starting again it would be high on my list.
Just found a teaser video of Behringer Ms-5 and thought I´d check out the original, for comparison 😄 OMG, what a difference! Your demo shows the true character of this wonderful beast. Thank you
First synth we ever had. 1976 maybe? Very kewl sounds, but fairly useless in a live setting other than making sweeps and deep hits. I think it had a ring modulator as I recalled making some obscenely ridiculous sounds. 🤣
Just heard the MS-5, gawd it sounds like dogshit. Praise the lord you have an OG unit that shows what it should really sound like. This has a little nice bottom end which I like, thanks for your work, even though I am a little late to the party??
This is a great instrument. Why present so many meaningless noises? The overuse of resonance shows it is electronic- but that cuts the options short. Make music, not noise!
I enjoy different types of sounds and seeing what a synth can do outside of traditional bread and butter sounds. A square and sawtooth lead or bass is pretty standard.

Here checking out the sounds after Behringer's announcement of remaking this synth.
How do you like it?

me too. I hope Behri keep the form factor, its as good as the sound - amazing
Me too
@@woodster909 the picture I saw looked a little like the poly d form factor

lol... glad my demo helps! Must be those analog sound waves... :)

This was my first synth, bought in 1977, thanks for sharing your great demo. One of the few I regret selling.

Thanks David. It is certainly beastly in size and sound. The System 100 is also incredible and very versatile. Love this era of early Roland gear.
SH-5 is very cool. Full fat sound from the 70s Rolands for sure!
Indeed :) You also got to play one in your documentary, what do you like best about it?

I really like the retrofuturistic aesthetics of this synth. And the sound of it, of course.
Me and my dad are watching this and happy to see it has a good home! Great demo
Thanks dude, the SH-5 is pretty killer and was definitely worth the trip! :) Say hi to your dad and hope you are both staying safe.

It will be interesting to hear comparisons to the original!
I have so many classic monosynths, more than I need but I'd still love to find one of these at a reasonable price! Nice demo!
Thanks! They are out there but pricey these days. It's a great monosynth.
@@synth4ever too pricey, like nearly $5k is just too much for one, great synth but not worth that much!
This is like the System 100's brother. So similar, but some different features. Same raw, 70s Roland sound!
Yes, SH-5 and System 100 are very similar in tone! Both fantastic.
Great demo - it's a very capable synth, and also very aggressive :-)
Wonderful synth
incredible
Agreed
Deadly sounds
very HAWKWIND
Must admit.... never seen or heard of a SH-5 lol :-D sounds quite lush... every day is a skool day eh?

Great synth...
Absolutely!
Lovely phatt aggressive sounding analogue synth.
Absolutely, huge oscillators and awesome filters.
At the beginning of your video,I thought I was listening to Dick Hyman and his album Minatour, pretty awesome sounds!!!!
Thank you! :)
Must've been used on Radioactivty?
Alphabet with colors.. art. Voice boxing is easy. Gods say more than we do.
Great demo! Love the sounds coming out of that thing...
SH-5 can put out so many different tones and textures, its a lot of fun.
Alot of guys made serious coin 40+ yrs ago with one of these and a Revox RTR. Paying top $$$ for this now is just pointless.

. . . ... Hourargh !!
Anybody here going to pick up the MS-5?
Sonically, I can see where Roland went with this....;-)
Dunno...
This demo makes it sound like it can only do weird blips and blobs sounds.
do not underestimate the dark side of the force

Yes, there is a ring mod on board... lots of metallic sounds are possible!
This thing sounds awfully lot like the Commodore 64 SID music chip
Maybe it was an inspiration for the C64? :)

Thanks for watching. Nothing beats an original!
nothing sounds like it. I hope the Behringer version can get this sound out of it.
With nearly 50 years of oscillator drift and aging components, I believe there will be some differences.

No chance. :)
